Low- and intermediate-mass stars evolve through the asymptotic giant branch (AGB), when an efficient mass-loss process removes a significant fraction of their initial mass. A substantial increase in the mass-loss rate at the end of the AGB is observed for at least some stars for unknown reasons. This creates post-AGB objects that are completely enshrouded in thick dusty envelopes and might be associated with binary interactions. We observed the $J=2-1$ line of $^{13}$CO, C$^{17}$O, and C$^{18}$O with the Atacama Large Millimeter / submillimeter Array (ALMA) towards six obscured post-AGB stars (four C-rich and two O-rich sources) to constrain the properties of their circumstellar envelopes, recent mass-loss histories, and initial mass of the central stars. Based on the inferred $^{17}$O/$^{18}$O isotopic ratios, we find all stars to have relatively low initial masses ($< 2~M_\odot$) contrary to suggestions in the literature of higher masses for some sources. We infer a mass for HD~187885 $\sim 1.15~M_\odot$, which is relatively low for a carbon star. For all but one source (GLMP~950), we observe kinematic components with velocities $\gtrsim 30$~km~s$^{-1}$, which are faster than typical AGB wind expansion velocities. For most sources, these higher-velocity outflows display point-symmetric morphologies. The case of Hen~3-1475 is particularly spectacular, with the high-velocity molecular outflow interleaved with the high-velocity outflow of ionised gas observed at optical wavelengths. Based on the size of the emission regions of the slow components of the outflows, we derive typical kinematic ages associated with the C$^{18}$O~$J=2-1$ emission $\lesssim 1500$~years and obtain relatively high associated mass-loss rates ($\gtrsim10^{-4}~M_\odot~{\rm yr}^{-1}$). We analyse continuum and molecular emission, observed with ALMA, from the dust-enshrouded intermediate-mass AGB star OH 30.1 -0.7. We find a secondary peak in the continuum maps, "feature B", separated by 4.6" from the AGB star, which corresponds to a projected separation of $1.8 \times 10^4$ au, placing a lower limit on the physical separation. This feature is most likely composed of cold dust and is likely to be ejecta associated with the AGB star, though we cannot rule out that it is a background object. The molecular emission we detect includes lines of CO, SiS, CS, SO$_2$, NS, NaCl, and KCl. We find that the NS emission is off centre and arranged along an axis perpendicular to the direction of feature B, indicative of a UV-emitting binary companion (e.g. a G-type main sequence star or hotter), perhaps on an eccentric orbit, contributing to its formation. However, the NaCl and KCl emission constrain the nature of that companion to not be hotter than a late B-type main sequence star. We find relatively warm emission arising from the inner wind and detect several vibrationally excited lines of SiS (3 = 1), NaCl (up to 3 = 4) and KCl (up to 3 = 2), and emission from low energy levels in the mid to outer envelope, as traced by SO$_2$. The CO emission is abruptly truncated around 3.5" or 14,000 au from the continuum peak, suggesting that mass loss at a high rate may have commenced as little as 2800 years ago., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The transport of energy through convection is important during many stages of stellar evolution, and is best studied in our Sun or giant evolved stars. Features that are attributed to convection are found on the surface of massive red supergiant stars. Also for lower mass evolved stars, indications of convection are found, but convective timescales and sizes remain poorly constrained. Models indicate that convective motions are crucial for the production of strong winds that return the products of stellar nucleosynthesis into the interstellar medium. Here we report a series of reconstructed interferometric images of the surface of the evolved giant star R Doradus. The images reveal a stellar disc with prominent small scale features that provide the structure and motions of convection on the stellar surface. We find that the dominant structure size of the features on the stellar disc is $0.72\pm0.05$ astronomical units (au). We measure the velocity of the surface motions to vary between $-18$ and $+20$ km s$^{-1}$, which means the convective timescale is approximately one month. Our purpose is to study the effect of binary companions located within the first 10 stellar radii from the primary AGB star. In this work, we target the mass-losing carbon star V Hydrae (V Hya), looking for signatures of its companion in the dust forming region of the atmosphere. The star was observed in the L- and N-bands with the VLTI/MATISSE instrument at low spectral resolution. We reconstructed images of V Hya's photosphere and surroundings using the two bands and compared our interferometric observables with VLTI/MIDI and VISIR archival data. To constrain the dust properties, we used DUSTY to model the spectral energy distribution. The star is dominated by dust emission in the L- and N- bands. The VISIR image confirms the presence of a large-scale dusty circumstellar envelope surrounding V Hya. The MATISSE reconstructed images show asymmetric and elongated structures in both infrared bands. In the L-band, we detected an elongated shape of approximately 15 mas, likely to be of photospheric origin. In the N-band, we found a 20 mas extension North-East from the star, and perpendicular to the L-band elongated axis. The position angle and the size of the N-band extension match the prediction of the companion position at MATISSE epoch. By comparing MATISSE N-band with MIDI data, we deduce that the elongation axis in the N-band has rotated since the previous interferometric measurements 13 years ago, supporting the idea that the particle enhancement is related to the dusty clump moving along with the companion. The MATISSE images unveil the presence of a dust enhancement at the companion position, opening new doors for further analysis on the binary interaction with an AGB component., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Aims. We aim to resolve the spatial and kinematic sub-structures in five detached-shell sources to provide detailed constraints for hydrodynamic models that describe the formation and evolution of the shells. Methods. We use observations of the 12 CO (1-0) emission towards five carbon-AGB stars with ALMA. The data have angular resolutions of 0.3 arcsec to 1arcsec and a velocity resolution of 0.3 km/s . This enables us to quantify spatial and kinematic structures in the shells. Results. The observed emission is separated into two distinct components: a more coherent, bright outer shell and a more filamentary, fainter inner shell. The kinematic information shows that the inner sub-shells move at a higher velocity relative to the outer sub-shells. The observed sub-structures confirm the predictions from hydrodynamical models. However, the models do not predict a double-shell structure, and the CO emission likely only traces the inner and outer edges of the shell, implying a lack of CO in the middle layers of the detached shell. Previous estimates of the masses and temperatures are consistent with originating mainly from the brighter subshell, but the total shell masses are likely lower limits. Conclusions. The observed spatial and kinematical splittings of the shells appear consistent with results from hydrodynamical models, provided the CO emission does not trace the H2 density distribution in the shell but rather traces the edges of the shells. It is therefore not possible to constrain the total shell mass based on the CO observations alone. The mass loss experienced on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) at the end of the lives of low- and intermediate-mass stars is widely accepted to rely on radiation pressure acting on dust grains formed in the extended AGB atmospheres. The interaction of convection, stellar pulsation, and heating and cooling processes cause the density, velocity and temperature distributions in the inner regions of the envelope to be complex, making the dust-formation process difficult to calculate. Hence, characterising the extended atmospheres and inner outflow empirically is paramount to advance our understanding of the dust-formation and wind-driving processes. To this end, we observe the AGB star R Dor using ALMA and modelled the $^{12}$CO $v=0, J=2-1$, $v=1, J=2-1$ and $3-2$ and $^{13}$CO $v=0, J=3-2$ lines using the 3D radiative transfer code LIME up to a distance of $\sim 4$ times the radius of the star at sub-mm wavelengths. We find a complex velocity field with structure down to scales at least equal to the resolution of the observations. The observed maps are well reproduced assuming spherical symmetry for the gas temperature and density distributions. We find the radial profiles of these two quantities to be very steep close to the star and shallower for radii larger than $\sim 1.6$ times the stellar sub-mm radius. This change is consistent with the transition between extended atmosphere and outflow. We constrain the standard deviation of the stochastic velocity distribution in the large-scale outflow to be $\lesssim 0.4$ km/s. We observe two emission blobs in the CO $v=0, J=2-1$ line and find their gas densities and radial velocities to be substantially larger than those of the surrounding gas. Monitoring the evolution of these blobs will lead to a better understanding of the role of these structures in the mass-loss process of R Dor.

The dusty winds of cool evolved stars are a major contributor of the newly synthesised material enriching the Galaxy and future generations of stars. However, the details of the physics and chemistry behind dust formation and wind launching have yet to be pinpointed. Recent spatially resolved observations show the importance of gaining a more comprehensive view of the circumstellar chemistry, but a comparative study of the intricate interplay between chemistry and physics is still difficult because observational details such as frequencies and angular resolutions are rarely comparable. Aiming to overcome these deficiencies, ATOMIUM is an ALMA Large Programme to study the physics and chemistry of the circumstellar envelopes of a diverse set of oxygen-rich evolved stars under homogeneous observing conditions at three angular resolutions between ~0.02"-1.4". Here we summarize the molecular inventory of these sources, and the correlations between stellar parameters and molecular content. Seventeen oxygen-rich or S-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and red supergiant (RSG) stars have been observed in several tunings with ALMA Band 6, targeting a range of molecules to probe the circumstellar envelope and especially the chemistry of dust formation close to the star. We systematically assigned the molecular carriers of the spectral lines and measured their spectroscopic parameters and the angular extent of the emission of each line from integrated intensity maps. Across the ATOMIUM sample, we detect 291 transitions of 24 different molecules and their isotopologues. This includes several first detections in oxygen-rich AGB/RSG stars: PO v=1, SO2 v1=1 and v2=2, and several high energy H2O transitions. Water and the hydroxyl radical are major constituents of the envelope of O-rich late-type stars. Transitions involving energy levels that are highly excited have been observed in both H$_2$O and OH. These and more recently discovered transitions can now be observed at a high sensitivity and angular resolution with the ALMA Array. Spectra and maps of H$_2$O and OH observed with an angular resolution of 20 to $\sim$200 mas were obtained at two epochs with the ALMA array. Observations with the Compact Array were also used to check for time variability of water transitions. Radiative transfer models of water were revisited to characterize masing conditions and up-to-date chemical models were used for comparison with our observations. Ten rotational transitions of H$_2$O with energies up to 9000 K were observed in various vibrational states. All but one are new detections in space, and from these we have derived accurate rest frequencies. Hyperfine split $\Lambda$-doubling transitions in v = 0, J = 27/2 and 29/2 levels of the $^2\Pi_{3/2}$ state and, $J = 33/2$ and 35/2 of the $^2\Pi_{1/2}$ state of OH with excitation energies up to 8900 K were also observed. Four of these transitions are new detections in space. Combining our measurements with earlier observations of OH, the v = 0 and v = 1 $\Lambda$-doubling frequencies have been improved. Our H$_2$O maps show compact emission and extensions up to twelve stellar radii or more. The 268.149 GHz emission line of water in the v$_2$ = 2 state is time variable, tends to be masing with dominant radiative pumping, and is widely excited. The widespread but weaker 262.898 GHz water line in v$_2$ = 1 also shows signs of maser emission. Emission and absorption of both H$_2$O and OH reveal an infall of matter and complex kinematics influenced by binarity. Aims. Through the ATOMIUM project, based on an ALMA large program, we aim to present a consistent view of a sample of 17 nearby cool evolved stars (Aymptotic Giant Branch and red supergiant stars). Methods. Here we present VLT/SPHERE-ZIMPOL polarimetric maps obtained in the visible of 14 out of the 17 ATOMIUM sources. They were obtained contemporaneously with the ALMA high spatial resolution data. To help interpret the polarized signal, we produced synthetic maps of light scattering by dust, through 3D radiative transfer simulations with the RADMC3D code. Results. The degree of linear polarization (DoLP) observed by ZIMPOL spreads across several optical filters. We infer that it primarily probes dust located just outside of the point spread function, and in or near the plane of the sky, with a total optical depth close to unity in the line of sight, representing only a fraction of the total circumstellar dust. The maximum DoLP ranges from 0.03-0.38 depending on the source, fractions that can be reproduced by our 3D pilot models for grains composed of common dust species. The spatial structure of the DoLP shows a diverse set of shapes. Only for three sources do we note a correlation between the ALMA CO and SiO lines, which trace the gas density, and the DoLP, which traces the dust. Conclusion. The clumpiness of the DoLP and the lack of a consistent correlation between the gas and the dust location show that, in the inner circumstellar environment (CSE), dust formation occurs at very specific sites. This has potential consequences for the derived mass-loss rates and dust-to-gas ratio in the inner region of the CSE. Except for $\pi^1$~Gru and perhaps GY Aql, we do not detect interactions between the circumstellar wind and the hypothesized companions that shape the wind at larger scales. 12CO and 13CO lines, as well as a mm-wave continuum, have been observed for a sample of 22 OH/IR stars in directions within 2 degrees of the Galactic Centre. Photometry data have been gathered from the literature to construct SEDs and to determine pulsational variability. Radiative transfer models have been used to interpret the data. All stars in the sample were detected in at least one CO line, and 8 objects were detected in 324 GHz continuum. Based on luminosity criteria, the sample is divided into 17 objects that most likely lie within the inner Galactic Bulge, and 5 objects that are most likely foreground objects. The median luminosity of the inner-Galactic-Bulge objects, 5600 Lsun, corresponds to an initial mass in the range 1.2-1.6 Msun, indicating that these OH/IR stars descend from solar-type stars. The objects in this sub-sample are further divided into two classes based on their SED characteristics: 11 objects have SEDs that are well matched by models invoking dust envelopes extending from a few stellar radii and outwards, while 6 objects are better modelled as having detached dust envelopes with inner radii in the range 200-600 au and warmer central stars. The former objects have periodic variability, while the latter objects are predominantly non-periodic. The median gas-mass-loss rate, gas terminal expansion velocity, gas-to-dust mass ratio, and circumstellar 12CO/13CO abundance ratio have been estimated to be 2x10{-5} Msun/yr, 18 km/s, 200 (excluding the sources with detached dust envelopes, which show markedly lower gas-to-dust ratios), and 5, respectively, for the inner-Galactic-Bulge objects. The inner-Galactic-Bulge OH/IR stars studied here constitute an excellent sample of equidistant objects for the purpose of understanding the evolution of the mass-loss-rate characteristics at the tip of the AGB., Comment: 32 pages, 17 figures

We aim to constrain the dust mass and grain sizes in the interaction regions between the stellar winds and the ISM around asymptotic giant branch stars. By describing the dust in these regions, we aim to shed light on the role of low mass evolved stars in the origin of dust in galaxies. We use images in the far-infrared at 70 micron and 160 micron to derive dust temperatures and dust masses in the wind-ISM interaction regions around a sample of carbon-rich and oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. The dust temperature and mass are determined in two ways. First directly from the data using the ratio of the measured fluxes and assuming opacities for dust with a constant grain size of 0.1 micron. We then perform 3D dust-radiative transfer models spatially constrained by the observations to consistently calculate the temperature and mass. For the radiative transfer models each model contains one constant grain size, which is varied between 0.01 micron to 5.0 micron. We find that the observed dust mass in the wind-ISM interaction regions is consistent with mass accumulated from the stellar winds. For the carbon-rich sources adding the spatial constraints in the radiative transfer models results in preferentially larger grain sizes (approx. 2 micron). For the oxygen-rich sources the spatial constraints result in too high temperatures in the models, making it impossible to fit the observed far-infrared ratio irrespective of the grain size used, indicating a more complex interplay of grain properties and the stellar radiation field. The results have implications for how likely it is for the grains to survive the transition into the ISM, and the properties of dust particles that later act as seeds for grain growth in the ISM. The nucleosynthesis production of fluorine (F) is still a matter of debate. Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are one of the main candidates for F production. However, their contribution to the total F budget is not fully known due to the lack of observations. In this paper, we report the detection of AlF line emission, one of the two main carriers of F in the gas-phase in the outflow of evolved stars, towards five nearby oxygen-rich AGB stars, $o$ Ceti, R Leo, IK Tau, R Dor, and W Hya. From spatially resolved observations, we estimated the AlF emitting region with a radius $\sim11R_{\star}$ for $o$ Ceti and $\sim9R_{\star}$ for R Leo. From population diagram analysis, we report the AlF column densities of $\sim 5.8\times10^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $\sim 3\times10^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$ for $o$ Ceti and R Leo, respectively, within these regions. For $o$ Ceti, we used the C$^{18}$O ($v=0$, $J=3-2$) observations to estimate the H$_2$ column density of the emitting region. We found a fractional abundance of $f_{\rm AlF/H_2}\sim(2.5\pm1.7)\times10^{-8}$. This gives a lower limit on the F budget in $o$ Ceti and is compatible with the solar F budget $f_{\rm F/H_2}=(5\pm2)\times10^{-8}$. For R Leo, a fractional abundance $f_{\rm AlF/H_2}=(1.2\pm0.5)\times10^{-8}$ is estimated. For other sources, we cannot precisely determine the emitting region based on the available data. Assuming an emitting region with a radius of $\sim 11R_{\star}$ and the rotational temperatures derived for $o$ Ceti and R Leo, we crudely approximated the AlF column density to be $\sim(1.2-1.5)\times10^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$ in W Hya, $\sim(2.5-3.0)\times10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ in R Dor, and $\sim(0.6-1.0)\times10^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$ in IK Tau. These result in fractional abundances within a range of $f_{\rm AlF/H_2}\sim(0.1-4)\times10^{-8}$ in W Hya, R Dor, and IK Tau., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

This overview paper presents ATOMIUM, a Large Programme in Cycle 6 with the Atacama Large Millimeter-submillimeter Array (ALMA). The goal of ATOMIUM is to understand the dynamics and the gas phase and dust formation chemistry in the winds of evolved asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and red supergiant (RSG) stars. A more general aim is to identify chemical processes applicable to other astrophysical environments. 17 oxygen-rich AGB and RSG stars spanning a range in (circum)stellar parameters and evolutionary phases were observed in a homogeneous observing strategy allowing for an unambiguous comparison. Data were obtained between 213.83 and 269.71 GHz at high (0.025-0.050 arcsec), medium (0.13-0.24 arcsec), and low (about 1 arcsec) angular resolution. The sensitivity per 1.3 km/s channel was 1.5-5 mJy/beam. 13 molecules were designated as primary molecules in the survey: CO, SiO, AlO, AlOH, TiO, TiO2, HCN, SO, SO2, SiS, CS, H2O, and NaCl. The scientific motivation, survey design, sample properties, data reduction, and an overview of the data products are described; and we highlight one scientific result - the wind kinematics of the ATOMIUM sources. The ATOMIUM sources often have a slow wind acceleration, and a fraction of the gas reaches a velocity which can be up to a factor of two times larger than previously reported terminal velocities assuming isotropic expansion, and the wind kinematic profiles establish that the radial velocity described by the momentum equation for a spherical wind structure cannot capture the complexity of the velocity field. In 15 sources, some molecular transitions other than 12CO v=0 J=2-1 reach a higher outflow velocity, with a spatial emission zone that is often greater than 30 stellar radii, but much less than the extent of CO. Binary interaction with a (sub)stellar companion might (partly) explain the non-monotonic behaviour of the projected velocity field.

Observation of CO emission around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars is the primary method to determine gas mass-loss rates. While radiative transfer models have shown that molecular levels of CO can become mildly inverted, causing maser emission, CO maser emission has yet to be confirmed observationally. High-resolution observations of the CO emission around AGB stars now have the brightness temperature sensitivity to detect possible weak CO maser emission. We used high angular resolution observations taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to observe the small-scale structure of CO $J=3-2$ emission around the oxygen-rich AGB star W Hya. We find CO maser emission amplifying the stellar continuum with an optical depth $\tau\approx-0.55$. The maser predominantly amplifies the limb of the star because CO $J=3-2$ absorption from the extended stellar atmosphere is strongest towards the centre of the star. The CO maser velocity corresponds to a previously observed variable component of high-frequency H$_2$O masers and with the OH maser that was identified as the amplified stellar image. This implies that the maser originates beyond the acceleration region and constrains the velocity profile since we find the population inversion primarily in the inner circumstellar envelope. We find that inversion can be explained by the radiation field at 4.6 $\mu$m and that the existence of CO maser emission is consistent with the estimated mass-loss rates for W Hya. However, the pumping mechanism requires a complex interplay between absorption and emission lines in the extended atmosphere. Excess from dust in the circumstellar envelope of W Hya is not sufficient to contribute significantly to the required radiation field at 4.6 $\mu$m. S-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are thought to be intermediates in the evolution of oxygen- to carbon-rich AGB stars. The chemical compositions of their circumstellar envelopes are also intermediate, but have not been studied in as much detail as their carbon- and oxygen-rich counterparts. We aim to determine the abundances of AlCl and AlF from rotational lines, which have been observed for the first time towards an S-type AGB star, W Aql. In combination with models based on PACS observations, we aim to update our chemical kinetics network based on these results. We analyse ALMA observations towards W Aql of AlCl in the ground and first two vibrationally excited states and AlF in the ground vibrational state. Using radiative transfer models, we determine the abundances and spatial abundance distributions of Al$^{35}$Cl, Al$^{37}$Cl, and AlF. We also model HCl and HF emission and compare these models to PACS spectra to constrain the abundances of these species. AlCl is found in clumps very close to the star, with emission confined within 0.1$^{\prime\prime}$ of the star. AlF emission is more extended, with faint emission extending 0.2$^{\prime\prime}$ to 0.6$^{\prime\prime}$ from the continuum peak. We find peak abundances, relative to H$_2$, of $1.7\times 10^{-7}$ for Al$^{35}$Cl, $7\times 10^{-8}$ for Al$^{37}$Cl and $1\times 10^{-7}$ for AlF. From the PACS spectra, we find abundances of $9.7\times 10^{-8}$ and $\leq 10^{-8}$, relative to H$_2$, for HCl and HF, respectively. The AlF abundance exceeds the solar F abundance, indicating that fluorine synthesised in the AGB star has already been dredged up to the surface of the star and ejected into the circumstellar envelope. From our analysis of chemical reactions in the wind, we conclude that AlF may participate in the dust formation process, but we cannot fully explain the rapid depletion of AlCl seen in the wind., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We aim to constrain the sizes of the CO circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) of 16 S-type stars, along with an additional 7 and 4 CSEs of C-type and M-type AGB stars, respectively. We map the emission from the CO J=2-1 and 3-2 lines observed with the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) and its total power (TP) antennas, and fit with a Gaussian distribution in the uv- and image planes for ACA-only and TP observations, respectively. The major axis of the fitted Gaussian for the CO(2-1) line data gives a first estimate of the size of the CO-line-emitting CSE. We investigate possible signs of deviation from spherical symmetry by analysing the line profiles, the results from visibility fitting, and by investigating the deconvolved images. The sizes of the CO-line-emitting CSEs of low-mass-loss-rate (low-MLR) S-stars fall between the sizes of the CSEs of C-stars, which are larger, and those of M-stars, which are smaller, as expected because of the differences in their respective CO abundances. The sizes of the low-MLR S-type stars show no dependence on circumstellar density, while a steeper density dependence is observed at high MLR. Furthermore, our results show that the CO CSEs of most of the S-stars in our sample are consistent with a spherically symmetric and smooth outflow. The CO envelope sizes obtained in this paper will be used to constrain detailed radiative transfer modelling to directly determine more accurate MLR estimates for the stars in our sample. For several of our sources that present signs of deviation from spherical symmetry, further high-resolution observations would be necessary to investigate the nature of, and the physical processes behind, these asymmetrical structures. Interactions between AGB stars and a secondary in a close orbit are one possible explanation of why some AGB stars develop into aspherical planetary nebulae. This study uses millimeter observations of the continuum and SiO maser emission in several symbiotic Miras looking for evidence of an interaction between the two stars. New JVLA observations at ~45 mas resolution are analyzed, imaging continuum and SiO masers. Two of the three targets were detected and accurately registered continuum and line images were derived. No clear evidence of an interaction was found between components B and A in Mira. R Aqr has a well known jet arising from the secondary star. The jet may be disturbing the circumstellar envelop of the AGB star or possibly just nearly aligned with it., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

We report the detection of two lines at millimetre wavelengths towards the immediate surroundings of the post-giant and most likely post-common-envelope star HD101584 using high-angular-resolution ALMA observations. The circumstellar environment of this object is rich in different molecular species, but we find no viable identifications in terms of molecular lines. We aim to determine whether or not these lines can be attributed to the Rydberg transitions -- X30alpha and X26alpha -- of neutral atoms of elements heavier than carbon. A simple model in strict local thermodynamic equilibrium for a warm-gas environment of the moderate-temperature star (T_eff about 8500 K) was constructed to corroborate our findings. A geometrically thin, disc-like geometry seen face-on was chosen and a distance of 1 kpc. The observed flux densities of the lines and the continuum at 232 and 354 GHz can be reproduced using 10^(-3) M_sun of gas at a temperature of about 2800 K and a hydrogen density of about 10^(12) cm(-3), assuming solar abundances for the elements. The gas lies within a distance of about 5 au from the star (assuming a distance of 1 kpc). The ionisation fraction is low, about 3x10^(-5). The origin of such a region is not clear, but it may be related to a common-envelope-evolution phase. With these conditions, the line emissions are dominated by Rydberg transitions within the stable isotopes of Mg. A turbulent velocity field in the range 5.5 - 7.5 km s^(-1) is required to fit the Gaussian line shapes. An upper limit to the average magnetic field in the line-emitting region of 1G is set using the Zeeman effect in these lines. We speculate that Rydberg transitions of heavy elements may be an interesting probe for the close-in environments of other moderate-temperature objects like AGB stars, red supergiants, yellow hypergiants, and binaries of various types., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

Binary interactions dominate the evolution of massive stars, but their role is less clear for low- and intermediate-mass stars. The evolution of a spherical wind from an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star into a nonspherical planetary nebula (PN) could be due to binary interactions. We observed a sample of AGB stars with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and found that their winds exhibit distinct nonspherical geometries with morphological similarities to planetary nebulae (PNe). We infer that the same physics shapes both AGB winds and PNe; additionally, the morphology and AGB mass-loss rate are correlated. These characteristics can be explained by binary interaction. Context: The observed orbital characteristics of post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) and post-red giant branch (post-RGB) binaries are not understood. We suspect that the missing ingredients to explain them probably lie in the continuous interaction of the central binary with its circumstellar environment. Aims: We aim at studying the circumbinary material in these complex systems by investigating the connection between the innermost and large-scale structures. Methods: We perform high-angular resolution observations in the near-infrared continuum of HD101584, which has a complex structure as seen at millimeter wavelengths with a disk-like morphology and a bipolar outflow due to an episode of strong binary interaction. To account for the complexity of the target we first perform an image reconstruction and use this result to fit a geometrical model to extract the morphological and thermal features of the environment. Results: The image reveals an unexpected double-ring structure. We interpret the inner ring to be produced by emission from dust located in the plane of the disk and the outer ring to be produced by emission from dust that is located 1.6[D/1kpc] au above the disk plane. The inner ring diameter (3.94[D/1kpc] au), and temperature (T=1540$\pm$10K) are compatible with the dust sublimation front of the disk. The origin of the out-of-plane ring (with a diameter of 7.39[D/1kpc] au and a temperature of 1014$\pm10$K) could be due to episodic ejection or a dust condensation front in the outflow. Conclusion: The observed outer ring is possibly linked with the blue-shifted side of the large scale outflow seen by ALMA and is tracing its launching location to the central star. Such observations give morphological constraints on the ejection mechanism. This is the first publication of the DEATHSTAR project. The goal of the project is to reduce the uncertainties of observational estimates of mass-loss rates from Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. Line emission from 12CO J=2-1 and 3-2 were mapped using the ACA. In this initial analysis, the emission distribution was fit to a Gaussian distribution in the uv-plane. Detailed radiative transfer analysis will be presented in the future. The axes of the best-fit Gaussian at the line center of the 12CO J=2-1 emission gives a first indication of the size of the emitting region. Furthermore, the fitting results, such as the major and minor axis, center position, and the goodness of fit across both lines, constrain the symmetry of the emission distribution. We find that the CO envelope sizes are, in general, larger for C-type than for M-type AGB stars, which is expected if the CO/H2 ratio is larger in C-type stars. Furthermore, a relation between the 12CO J=2-1 size and circumstellar density is shown that, while in broad agreement with photodissociation calculations, reveals large scatter and systematic differences between the stellar types. The majority of the sources have CO envelopes that are consistent with a spherically symmetric, smooth outflow. For about a third of the sources, indications of strong asymmetries are found. This is consistent with previous interferometric investigations of northern sources. Smaller scale asymmetries are found in a larger fraction of sources. These results for CO envelope radii and shapes can be used to constrain detailed radiative transfer modeling of the same stars so as to determine mass-loss rates that are independent of photodissociation models. Isotopologue line intensity ratios of circumstellar molecules have been widely used to trace the photospheric elemental isotopic ratios of evolved stars. However, depending on the molecular species and the physical conditions of the environment, the circumstellar isotopologue ratio may deviate considerably from the stellar atmospheric value. In this paper, we aim to examine how the CO and HCN abundance ratios vary radially due to chemical reactions in the outflows of AGB stars and the effect of excitation and optical depth on the resulting line intensity ratios. We find that the circumstellar 12CO/13CO can deviate from its atmospheric value by up to 25-94% and 6-60% for C- and O-type CSEs, respectively. We show that variations of the intensity of the ISRF and the gas kinetic temperature can significantly influence the CO isotopologue ratio in the outer CSEs. On the contrary, the H12CN/H13CN ratio is stable for all tested mass-loss rates. The RT modeling shows that the integrated line intensity ratio of CO of different rotational transitions varies significantly for stars with intermediate mass-loss rates due to combined chemical and excitation effects. In contrast, the excitation conditions for the both HCN isotopologues are the same. We demonstrate the importance of using the isotopologue abundance profiles from chemical models as inputs to RT models in the interpretation of isotopologue observations. Previous studies of CO isotopologue ratios are based on multi-transition data for individual sources and it is difficult to estimate the errors in the reported values due to assumptions that are not entirely correct according to this study. If anything, previous studies may have overestimated the circumstellar 12CO/13CO abundance ratio. The use of the HCN as a tracer of C isotope ratios is affected by fewer complicating problems, provided one accounts corrections for high optical depths., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

Stars with initial masses between $\sim0.8$ and 8~$M_\odot$ present copious mass loss during the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) at the end of their lives. The accepted mass-loss mechanism requires radiation pressure acting on dust grains that form in the extended AGB stellar atmospheres. The details of this process are not yet well understood, however. Using the extreme-adaptive-optics imager and polarimeter SPHERE/ZIMPOL, we observed light polarised by grains around W\,Hya, SW\,Vir, and R\,Crt, which have mass-loss rates between 10$^{-7}$ and 10$^{-6}~M_\odot~{\rm yr^{-1}}$. We find the distribution of dust to be asymmetric around the three targets. A biconical morphology is seen for R Crt, with a position angle that is very similar to those inferred from interferometric observations of maser emission and of mid-infrared continuum emission. The cause of the biconical outflow cannot be directly inferred from the ZIMPOL data. The dust grains polarise light more efficiently at 0.65~$\mu$m for R\,Crt and SW\,Vir and at 0.82~$\mu$m for W\,Hya. This indicates that at the time of the observations, the grains around SW\,Vir and R\,Crt had sizes $< 0.1~\mu$m, while those around W\,Hya were larger, with sizes $\gtrsim 0.1~\mu$m. The asymmetric distribution of dust around R\,Crt makes the interpretation more uncertain for this star, however. We find that polarised light is produced already from within the visible photosphere of W~Hya, which we reproduce using models with an inner dust shell that is optically thick to scattering. The radial profile of the polarised light observed around W\,Hya reveal a steep dust density profile. We find the wind-acceleration region of W\,Hya to extend to at least $\sim 7~R_\star$, in agreement with theoretical predictions of acceleration up to $\sim 12~R_\star$., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

Unambiguous and complete determination of the Fermi surface is a primary step in understanding the electronic properties of topical metals and semi-metals, but only in a relatively few cases has this goal been realized. In this work, we present a systematic high-field quantum oscillation study up to 35 T on ZrSiS, a textbook example of a nodal-line semimetal with only linearly dispersive bands crossing the Fermi energy. The topology of the Fermi surface is determined with unprecedented precision and all pockets are identified by comparing the measured angle dependence of the quantum oscillations to density functional theory calculations. Comparison of the Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen oscillations at low temperatures and analysis of the respective Dingle plots reveal the presence of significantly enhanced scattering on the electron pocket. Above a threshold field that is aligned along the c-axis of the crystal, the specific cage-like Fermi surface of ZrSiS allows for electron-hole tunneling to occur across finite gaps in momentum space leading to quantum oscillations with a complex frequency spectrum. Additional high-frequency quantum oscillations signify magnetic breakdown orbits that encircle the entire Dirac nodal loop. We suggest that the persistence of quantum oscillations in the resistivity to high temperatures is caused by Stark interference between orbits of nearly equal masses., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

The phase diagram of the filled skutterudite CeOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ has been mapped in fields $H$ of up to 60 T and temperatures $T$ down to 0.5 K using resistivity, magnetostriction, and MHz conductivity. The valence transition separating the semimetallic, low-$H$, low-$T$, $\cal{L}$ phase from the metallic high-$H$, high-$T$ $\cal{H}$ phase exhibits a very unusual, wedge-shaped phase boundary, with a non-monotonic gradient alternating between positive and negative. This is quite different from the text-book "elliptical" phase boundary usually followed by valence transitions. Analysis of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations within the $\cal{H}$ phase reveals an effective mass that increases as $H$ drops toward the $\cal{H-L}$ phase boundary, suggesting proximity to a quantum-critical point. The associated magnetic fluctuations may be responsible for the anomalous $H,T$ dependence of the valence transition at high $H$, whereas the low$-H$, high$-T$ portion of the phase boundary may rather be associated with the proximity of CeOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ to a topological semimetal phase induced by uniaxial stress., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures and Supplementary Information of 4 pages, 2 figures

The initial conditions for the mass loss during the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase are set in their extended atmospheres, where, among others, convection and pulsation driven shocks determine the physical conditions. High resolution observations of AGB stars at (sub)millimetre wavelengths can now directly determine the morphology, activity, density, and temperature close to the stellar photosphere. We used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) high angular resolution observations to resolve the extended atmospheres of four of the nearest AGB stars: W Hya, Mira A, R Dor and R Leo. We interpreted the observations using a parameterised atmosphere model. We resolve all four AGB stars and determine the brightness temperature structure between $1$ and $2$ stellar radii. For W Hya and R Dor we confirm the existence of hotspots with brightness temperatures $>3000$ to $10000$~K. All four stars show deviations from spherical symmetry. We find variations on a timescale of days to weeks, and for R Leo we directly measure an outward motion of the millimetre wavelength surface with a velocity of at least $10.6\pm1.4$~km~s$^{-1}$. For all objects but W Hya we find that the temperature-radius and size-frequency relations require the existence of a (likely inhomogeneous) layer of enhanced opacity. The ALMA observations provide a unique probe of the structure of the extended AGB atmosphere. We find highly variable structures of hotspots and likely convective cells. In the future, these observations can be directly compared to multi-dimensional chromosphere and atmosphere models that determine the temperature, density, velocity, and ionisation structure between the stellar photosphere and the dust formation region. We report the detection and investigate the properties of high-excitation lambda-doubling line emission of hydroxyl (OH) detected towards three asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars (W Hya, R Dor, and IK Tau) using ALMA. The OH lines are produced very close to the central stars and seem optically thin and with no maser effect. We analyse the molecular excitation using population diagrams and find rotational temperatures of $\sim 2500$ K and column densities of $\sim 10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ for both W Hya and R Dor. For W Hya, we observe emission from vibrationally excited H2O arising from the same region as the OH emission. Moreover, CO $v = 1; J = 3 - 2$ emission also shows a brightness peak in the same region. Considering optically thin emission and the rotational temperature derived for OH, we find a CO column density $\sim 15$ times higher than that of OH, within an area of ($92 \times 84$) mas$^2$ centred on the OH emission peak. These results should be considered tentative because of the simple methods employed. The observed OH line frequencies differ significantly from the predicted transition frequencies in the literature, and provide the possibility of using OH lines observed in AGB stars to improve the accuracy of the Hamiltonian used for the OH molecule. We predict stronger OH lambda-doubling lines at millimetre wavelengths than those we detected. These lines will be a good probe of shocked gas in the extended atmosphere and are possibly even suitable as probes of the magnetic field in the atmospheres of close-by AGB stars through the Zeeman effect., Comment: Published in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters

We have performed a study of the characteristics of the circumstellar environment of the binary object HD101584, that provides information on a likely evolutionary scenario. We have obtained and analysed ALMA observations, complemented with observations using APEX, of a large number of molecular lines. An analysis of the spectral energy distribution has also been performed. Emissions from 12 molecular species (not counting isotopologues) have been observed, and most of them mapped with angular resolutions in the range 0.1" to 0.6". Four circumstellar components are identified: i) a central compact source of size 0.15", ii) an expanding equatorial density enhancement (a flattened density distribution in the plane of the orbit) of size 3", iii) a bipolar high-velocity outflow (150 km/s), and iv) an hourglass structure. The outflow is directed almost along the line of sight. There is evidence of a second bipolar outflow. The mass of the circumstellar gas is 0.5[D/1 kpc]^2 Msun, about half of it lies in the equatorial density enhancement. The dust mass is 0.01[D/1 kpc]^2 Msun, and a substantial fraction of this is in the form of large-sized, up to 1 mm, grains. The estimated kinetic age of the outflow is 770[D/1 kpc] yr. The kinetic energy and the scalar momentum of the accelerated gas are estimated to be 7x10^(45)[D/1 kpc]^2 erg and 10^(39)[D/1 kpc]^2 g cm/s, respectively. We provide good evidence that the binary system HD101584 is in a post-common-envelope-evolution phase, that ended before a stellar merger. Isotope ratios combined with stellar mass estimates suggest that the primary star's evolution was terminated already on the first red giant branch (RGB). The outflows of oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are thought to be driven by radiation pressure by photon scattering on grains with sizes of tenths of microns. The details of the formation of dust in the extended atmospheres of these stars and the mass-loss process is still not well understood. We obtained quasi-simultaneous observations of the AGB star Mira using ALMA and ZIMPOL to probe the distribution of gas and large dust grains, respectively. The polarized light images show dust around Mira~A, the companion (Mira~B) and in a trail that connects the two sources. ALMA reveals that dust around Mira~A is contained in a high-gas-density region with a significant fraction of the polarized light arising from its edge. We constrained the gas density, temperature, and velocity within a few stellar radii from the star by modelling the CO $v=1, J=3-2$ line. We find a mass $(\sim 3.8 \pm 1.3) \times 10^{-4}~M_\odot$ to be contained between the stellar millimetre photosphere, $R^{\rm 338~GHz}_\star$, and $4~R^{\rm 338~GHz}_\star$. Our best-fit models with lower masses also reproduce the $^{13}$CO $v=0, J=3-2$ line emission from this region. We find TiO$_2$ and AlO abundances corresponding to 4.5% and $< 0.1$% of the total titanium and aluminium expected for a solar-composition gas. The low abundance of AlO allows for efficient Al depletion into dust already very close to the star, as expected from thermal dust emission observations and theoretical calculations of Mira variables. We constrain the presence of aluminium oxide grains based on the scattered light observations and our gas-phase model. We find that aluminium oxide grains can account for a significant fraction of the total aluminium atoms in this region only if the grains have sizes $\lesssim 0.02~\mu$m. This is an order of magnitude smaller than the maximum sizes predicted by dust-formation and wind-driving models., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

In this study we have measured the magnetoresistance response of inverted HgTe quantum wells in the presence of a large parallel magnetic field up to 33 T is applied. We show that in quantum wells with inverted band structure a monotonically decreasing magnetoresistance is observed when a magnetic field up to order 10 T is applied parallel to the quantum well plane. This feature is accompanied by a vanishing of non-locality and is consistent with a predicted modification of the energy spectrum that becomes gapless at a critical in-plane field $B_{c}$. Magnetic fields in excess of $B_c$ allow us to investigate the evolution of the magnetoresistance in this field-induced semi-metallic region beyond the known regime. After an initial saturation phase in the presumably gapless phase, we observe a strong upturn of the longitudinal resistance. A small residual Hall signal picked up in non-local measurements suggests that this feature is likely a bulk phenomenon and caused by the semi-metallicity of the sample. Theoretical calculations indeed support that the origin of these features is classical and a power law upturn of the resistance can be expected due to the specifics of two-carrier transport in thin (semi-)metallic samples subjected to large magnetic fields.

We report a study of quantum oscillations in the high-field magneto-resistance of the nodal-line semimetal HfSiS. In the presence of a magnetic field up to 31 T parallel to the c-axis, we observe quantum oscillations originating both from orbits of individual electron and hole pockets, and from magnetic breakdown between these pockets. In particular, we find an oscillation associated with a breakdown orbit enclosing one electron and one hole pocket in the form of a `figure of eight'. This observation represents an experimental confirmation of the momentum space analog of Klein tunneling. When the c-axis and the magnetic field are misaligned with respect to one another, this oscillation rapidly decreases in intensity. Finally, we extract the cyclotron masses from the temperature dependence of the oscillations, and find that the mass of the 'figure of eight' orbit corresponds to the sum of the individual pockets, consistent with theoretical predictions for Klein tunneling in topological semimetals., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The symbiotic star R Aqr is part of a small sample of binary AGB stars observed with ALMA. The sample stars are: R Aqr, Mira, W Aql, and pi1 Gru. The sample covers a range in binary separation and wind properties, where R Aqr is the source with the smallest separation. The R Aqr binary pair consists of an M-type AGB star and a white dwarf at a separation of 45 mas, equivalent to about 10 AU at 218 pc. The aim of the ALMA study is to investigate the dependence of the wind shaping on the binary separation and to provide constraints for hydrodynamical binary interaction models. R Aqr is particularly interesting as the source with the smallest separation and a complex circumstellar environment that is strongly affected by the interaction between the two stars and by the high-energy radiation resulting from this interaction and from the hot white dwarf companion. The CO(J=3-2) line emission has been observed at 0.5" spatial resolution. The CO envelope around the binary pair is marginally resolved, showing what appears to be a rather complex distribution. The outer radius of the CO emitting region is estimated from the data and found to be about a factor of 10 larger than previously thought. This implies an average mass-loss rate during the past 100 yr of 2x10-7 Msun/yr, a factor of 45 less than previous estimates. The channel maps are presented and the molecular gas distribution is discussed and set into the context of what was previously known about the system. Additional molecular line emission detected within the bandwidth covered by the ALMA observations is also presented. Because of the limited extent of the emission, firm conclusions about the dynamical evolution of the system will have to wait for higher spatial resolution observations. High resolution observations of the extended atmospheres of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars can now directly confront the theories that describe stellar mass loss. Using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) high angular resolution ($30\times42$~mas) observations we have, for the first time, resolved stellar rotation of an AGB star, R~Dor. We measure an angular rotation velocity of $\omega_R\sin{i}=(3.5\pm0.3)\times10^{-9}$~rad~s$^{-1}$ which indicates a rotational velocity of $|\upsilon_{\rm rot}\sin{i}|=1.0\pm0.1$~km~s$^{-1}$ at the stellar surface ($R_*=31.2$~mas at $214$~GHz). The rotation axis projected on the plane of the sky has a position angle $\Phi=7\pm6^\circ$. We find that the rotation of R Dor is two orders of magnitude faster than expected for a solitary AGB star that will have lost most of its angular momentum. Its rotational velocity is consistent with angular momentum transfer from a close companion. As a companion has not been directly detected we thus suggest R~Dor has a low-mass, close-in, companion. The rotational velocity approaches the critical velocity, set by the local sound speed in the extended envelope, and is thus expected to affect the mass loss characteristics of R~Dor., Comment: 12 pages, 15 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

(abridged) Our aim is to determine the radial abundance profile of SiO and HCN throughout the stellar outflow of R Dor, an oxygen-rich AGB star with a low mass-loss rate. We have analysed molecular transitions of CO, SiO, and HCN measured with the APEX telescope and all three instruments on the Herschel Space Observatory, together with literature data. Photometric data and the infrared spectrum measured by ISO-SWS were used to constrain the dust component of the outflow. Using both continuum and line radiative transfer methods, a physical envelope model of both gas and dust was established. We have performed an analysis of the SiO and HCN molecular transitions in order to calculate their abundances. We have obtained an envelope model that describes the dust and the gas in the outflow, and determined the abundance of SiO and HCN throughout the region of the outflow probed by our molecular data. For SiO, we find that the initial abundance lies between $5.5 \times 10^{-5}$ and $6.0 \times 10^{-5}$ w.r.t. H$_2$. The abundance profile is constant up to $60\ \pm 10\ R_*$, after which it declines following a Gaussian profile with an $e$-folding radius of $3.5 \pm 0.5 \times 10^{13}$ cm. For HCN, we find an initial abundance of $5.0 \times 10^{-7}$ w.r.t. H$_2$. The Gaussian profile that describes the decline starts at the stellar surface and has an $e$-folding radius $r_e$ of $1.85 \pm 0.05 \times 10^{15}$ cm. We cannot to unambiguously identify the mechanism by which SiO is destroyed at $60\ \pm 10\ R_*$. The initial abundances found are larger than previously determined (except for one previous study on SiO), which might be due to the inclusion of higher-$J$ transitions. Magnetotransport measurements are presented on paramagnetic (Hg,Mn)Te quantum wells (QWs) with an inverted band structure. Gate-voltage controlled density dependent measurements reveal an unusual behavior in the transition regime from n- to p-type conductance: A very small magnetic field of approximately 70 mT is sufficient to induce a transition into the nu = -1 quantum Hall state, which extends up to at least 10 Tesla. The onset field value remains constant for a unexpectedly wide gate-voltage range. Based on temperature and angle-dependent magnetic field measurements we show that the unusual behavior results from the realization of the quantum anomalous Hall state in these magnetically doped QWs.

(abbreviated) We aim to constrain the dust formation histories in the winds of oxygen-rich AGB stars. We have obtained ALMA observations with a spatial resolution of 120x150 mas tracing the dust formation region of a low mass-loss rate and a high mass-loss rate AGB star, R Dor and IK Tau. Emission line profiles of AlO, AlOH and AlCl are detected and are used to derive a lower limit of atomic aluminium incorporated in molecules. We show that the gas-phase aluminium chemistry is completely different in both stars, with a remarkable difference in the AlO and AlOH abundance stratification. The amount of aluminium locked up in these 3 molecules is small, <=1.1e-7, for both stars, i.e. only <=2% of the total aluminium budget. This leaves ample of room for aluminium to be incorporated in grains. A fundamental result is that AlO and AlOH, being the direct precursors of alumina grains, are detected well beyond the onset of the dust condensation proving that the aluminium oxide condensation cycle is not fully efficient. The ALMA observations allow us to quantitatively assess the current generation of theoretical dynamical-chemical models for AGB winds. We discuss how the current proposed scenario of aluminium dust condensation for low mass-loss rate AGB stars at a distance of ~1.5 Rstar, in particular for the stars R Dor and W Hya, poses a challenge if one wishes to explain both the dust spectral features in the spectral energy distribution (SED), in interferometric data, and in polarized light signal. In particular, the estimated grain temperature of Al2O3 is too high for the grains to retain their amorphous structure. We use Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Band 5 science verification observations of the red supergiant VY CMa to study the polarization of SiO thermal/masers lines and dust continuum at ~1.7 mm wavelength. We analyse both linear and circular polarization and derive the magnetic field strength and structure, assuming the polarization of the lines originates from the Zeeman effect, and that of the dust originates from aligned dust grains. We also discuss other effects that could give rise to the observed polarization. We detect, for the first time, significant polarization (~3%) of the circumstellar dust emission at millimeter wavelengths. The polarization is uniform with an electric vector position angle of $\sim8^\circ$. Varying levels of linear polarization are detected for the J=4-3 28SiO v=0, 1, 2, and 29SiO v=0, 1 lines, with the strongest polarization fraction of ~30% found for the 29SiO v=1 maser. The linear polarization vectors rotate with velocity, consistent with earlier observations. We also find significant (up to ~1%) circular polarization in several lines, consistent with previous measurements. We conclude that the detection is robust against calibration and regular instrumental errors, although we cannot yet fully rule out non-standard instrumental effects. Emission from magnetically aligned grains is the most likely origin of the observed continuum polarization. This implies that the dust is embedded in a magnetic field >13 mG. The maser line polarization traces the magnetic field structure. The magnetic field in the gas and dust is consistent with an approximately toroidal field configuration, but only higher angular resolution observations will be able to reveal more detailed field structure. We report a magnetotransport study of an ultra-high mobility ($\bar{\mu}\approx 25\times 10^6$\,cm$^2$\,V$^{-1}$\,s$^{-1}$) $n$-type GaAs quantum well up to 33 T. A strong linear magnetoresistance (LMR) of the order of 10$^5$ % is observed in a wide temperature range between 0.3 K and 60 K. The simplicity of our material system with a single sub-band occupation and free electron dispersion rules out most complicated mechanisms that could give rise to the observed LMR. At low temperature, quantum oscillations are superimposed onto the LMR. Both, the featureless LMR at high $T$ and the quantum oscillations at low $T$ follow the empirical resistance rule which states that the longitudinal conductance is directly related to the derivative of the transversal (Hall) conductance multiplied by the magnetic field and a constant factor $\alpha$ that remains unchanged over the entire temperature range. Only at low temperatures, small deviations from this resistance rule are observed beyond $\nu=1$ that likely originate from a different transport mechanism for the composite fermions.

We report on high-field angle-dependent magneto-transport measurements on epitaxial thin films of Bi2Se3, a three-dimensional topological insulator. At low temperature, we observe quantum oscillations that demonstrate the simultaneous presence of bulk and surface carriers. The magneto- resistance of Bi2Se3 is found to be highly anisotropic. In the presence of a parallel electric and magnetic field, we observe a strong negative longitudinal magneto-resistance that has been consid- ered as a smoking-gun for the presence of chiral fermions in a certain class of semi-metals due to the so-called axial anomaly. Its observation in a three-dimensional topological insulator implies that the axial anomaly may be in fact a far more generic phenomenon than originally thought., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We report the serendipitous detection with ALMA of the vibrationally-excited pure-rotational CO transition $v=1, J=3-2$ towards five asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, $o$ Cet, R Aqr, R Scl, W Aql, and $\pi^1$ Gru. The observed lines are formed in the poorly-understood region located between the stellar surface and the region where the wind starts, the so-called warm molecular layer. We successfully reproduce the observed lines profiles using a simple model. We constrain the extents, densities, and kinematics of the region where the lines are produced. R Aqr and R Scl show inverse P-Cygni line profiles which indicate infall of material onto the stars. The line profiles of $o$ Cet and R Scl show variability. The serendipitous detection towards these five sources shows that vibrationally-excited rotational lines can be observed towards a large number of nearby AGB stars using ALMA. We use high-angular-resolution images obtained with SPHERE/ZIMPOL to study the photosphere, the warm molecular layer, and the inner wind of the close-by oxygen-rich AGB star R Doradus. We present observations in filters V, cntH$\alpha$, and cnt820 and investigate the surface brightness distribution of the star and of the polarised light produced in the inner envelope. Thanks to second-epoch observations in cntH$\alpha$, we are able to see variability on the stellar photosphere. We find that in the first epoch the surface brightness of R Dor is asymmetric in V and cntH$\alpha$, the filters where molecular opacity is stronger, while in cnt820 the surface brightness is closer to being axisymmetric. The second-epoch observations in cntH$\alpha$ show that the morphology of R Dor changes completely in a timespan of 48 days to a more axisymmetric and compact configuration. The polarised intensity is asymmetric in all epochs and varies by between a factor of 2.3 and 3.7 with azimuth for the different images. We fit the radial profile of the polarised intensity using a spherically symmetric model and a parametric description of the dust density profile, $\rho(r)=\rho_\circ r^{-n}$. On average, we find exponents of $- 4.5 \pm 0.5$ that correspond to a much steeper density profile than that of a wind expanding at constant velocity. The dust densities we derive imply an upper limit for the dust-to-gas ratio of $\sim 2\times10^{-4}$ at 5.0 $R_\star$. Given the uncertainties in observations and models, this value is consistent with the minimum values required by wind-driving models for the onset of a wind, of $\sim 3.3\times10^{-4}$. However, if the steep density profile we find extends to larger distances from the star, the dust-to-gas ratio will quickly become too small for the wind of R Dor to be driven by the grains that produce the scattered light., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables

We report on the observation of the quantum Hall effect at high temperatures in HgTe quantum wells with a finite band gap and a thickness below and above the critical thickness $d_\textnormal{c}$ that separates a conventional semiconductor from a two-dimensional topological insulator. At high carrier concentrations we observe a quantized Hall conductivity up to 60\,K with energy gaps between Landau Levels of the order of 25\,meV, in good agreement with the Landau Level spectrum obtained from $\mathbf{k\cdot p}$-calculations. Using the scaling approach for the plateau-plateau transition at $\nu=2\rightarrow 1$, we find the scaling coefficient $\kappa =0.45 \pm 0.04$ to be consistent with the universality of scaling theory and we do not find signs of increased electron-phonon interaction to alter the scaling even at these elevated temperatures. Comparing the high temperature limit of the quantized Hall resistance in HgTe quantum wells with a finite band gap with room temperature experiment in graphene, we find the energy gaps at the break-down of the quantization to exceed the thermal energy by the same order of magnitude.

Context. The recent detection of warm H$_2$O vapor emission from the outflows of carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars challenges the current understanding of circumstellar chemistry. Two mechanisms have been invoked to explain warm H$_2$O vapor formation. In the first, periodic shocks passing through the medium immediately above the stellar surface lead to H$_2$O formation. In the second, penetration of ultraviolet interstellar radiation through a clumpy circumstellar medium leads to the formation of H$_2$O molecules in the intermediate wind. Aims. We aim to determine the properties of H$_2$O emission for a sample of 18 carbon-rich AGB stars and subsequently constrain which of the above mechanisms provides the most likely warm H$_2$O formation pathway. Context: AGB stars lose a large percentage of their mass in a dust-driven wind. This creates a circumstellar envelope, which can be studied through thermal dust emission and molecular emission lines. In the case of high mass-loss rates, this study is complicated by the high optical depths and the intricate coupling between gas and dust radiative transfer characteristics. An important aspect of the physics of gas-dust interactions is the strong influence of dust on the excitation of several molecules, including H2O. Aims: The dust and gas content of the envelope surrounding the high mass-loss rate OH/IR star OH 127.8+0.0, as traced by Herschel observations, is studied, with a focus on the H2O content and the dust-to-gas ratio. We report detecting a large number of H2O vapor emission lines up to J = 9 in the Herschel data, for which we present the measured line strengths. Methods: The treatments of both gas and dust species are combined using two numerical radiative transfer codes. The method is illustrated for both low and high mass-loss-rate sources. Specifically, we discuss different ways of assessing the dust-to-gas ratio: 1) from the dust thermal emission spectrum and the CO molecular gas line strengths; 2) from the momentum transfer from dust to gas and the measured gas terminal velocity; and 3) from the determination of the required amount of dust to reproduce H2O lines for a given H2O vapor abundance. These three diagnostics probe different zones of the outflow, for the first time allowing an investigation of a possible radial dependence of the dust-to-gas ratio. Results: ... Low- and intermediate-mass stars go through a period of intense mass-loss at the end of their lives in a phase known as the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). During the AGB a significant fraction of their initial mass is expelled in a stellar wind. This process controls the final stages of their evolution and contributes to the chemical evolution of galaxies. However, the wind-driving mechanism of AGB stars is not yet well understood, especially so for oxygen-rich sources. Characterizing both the present-day mass-loss and wind structure and the evolution of the mass-loss rate of such stars is paramount to advancing our understanding of this processes. We modelled the dust envelope of W Hya using an advanced radiative transfer code. The dust model was analysed in the light of a previously calculated gas-phase wind model and compared to measurements available in the literature, such as infrared spectra, infrared images, and optical scattered light fractions. We find that the dust spectrum of W Hya can partly be explained by a gravitationally bound dust shell that probably is responsible for most of the amorphous Al$_2$O$_3$ emission. The composition of the large ($\sim$\,0.3\,$\mu$m) grains needed to explain the scattered light cannot be constrained, but probably is dominated by silicates. Silicate emission in the thermal infrared was found to originate from beyond 40 AU from the star and we find that they need to have substantial near-infrared opacities to be visible at such large distances. The increase in near-infrared opacity of the dust at these distances roughly coincides with a sudden increase in expansion velocity as deduced from the gas-phase CO lines. Finally, the recent mass loss of W Hya is confirmed to be highly variable and we identify a strong peak in the mass-loss rate that occurred about 3500 years ago and lasted for a few hundred years., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

The processes leading to dust formation and the subsequent role it plays in driving mass loss in cool evolved stars is an area of intense study. Here we present high resolution ALMA Science Verification data of the continuum emission around the highly evolved oxygen-rich red supergiant VY CMa. These data enable us to study the dust in its inner circumstellar environment at a spatial resolution of 129 mas at 321 GHz and 59 mas at 658 GHz, thus allowing us to trace dust on spatial scales down to 11 R$_{\star}$ (71 AU). Two prominent dust components are detected and resolved. The brightest dust component, C, is located 334 mas (61 R$_{\star}$) South East of the star and has a dust mass of at least $2.5\times 10^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$. It has a dust emissivity spectral index of $\beta =-0.1$ at its peak, implying that it is optically thick at these frequencies with a cool core of $T_{d}\lesssim 100$ K. Interestingly, not a single molecule in the ALMA data has emission close to the peak of this massive dust clump. The other main dust component, VY, is located at the position of the star and contains a total dust mass of $4.0 \times 10^{-5} $M$_{\odot}$. It also contains a weaker dust feature extending over $60$ R$_{\star}$ to the North with the total component having a typical dust emissivity spectral index of $\beta =0.7$. We find that at least $17\%$ of the dust mass around VY CMa is located in clumps ejected within a more quiescent roughly spherical stellar wind, with a quiescent dust mass loss rate of $5 \times 10^{-6}$ M$_{\odot} $yr$^{-1}$. The anisotropic morphology of the dust indicates a continuous, directed mass loss over a few decades, suggesting that this mass loss cannot be driven by large convection cells alone.

The evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) is mainly controlled by the rate at which these stars lose mass in a stellar wind. Understanding the driving mechanism and strength of the stellar winds of AGB stars and the processes enriching their surfaces with products of nucleosynthesis are paramount to constraining AGB evolution and predicting the chemical evolution of galaxies. In a previous paper we have constrained the structure of the outflowing envelope of W Hya using spectral lines of the $^{12}$CO molecule. Here we broaden this study by modelling an extensive set of H$_{2}$O and $^{28}$SiO lines observed by the three instruments on board Herschel using a state-of-the-art molecular excitation and radiative transfer code. The oxygen isotopic ratios and the $^{28}$SiO abundance profile can be connected to the initial stellar mass and to crucial aspects of dust formation at the base of the stellar wind, respectively. The modelling of H$_{2}$O and $^{28}$SiO confirms the properties of the envelope model of W Hya derived from $^{12}$CO lines. We find an H$_2$O ortho-to-para ratio of 2.5\,$^{+2.5}_{-1.0}$, consistent with what is expected for an AGB wind. The O$^{16}$/O$^{17}$ ratio indicates that W Hya has an initial mass of about 1.5 M$_\odot$. Although the ortho- and para-H$_{2}$O lines observed by HIFI appear to trace gas of slightly different physical properties, a turbulence velocity of $0.7\pm0.1$ km s$^{-1}$ fits the HIFI lines of both spin isomers and those of $^{28}$SiO well. The ortho- and para-H$_2^{16}$O and $^{28}$SiO abundances relative to H$_{2}$ are $(6^{+3}_{-2}) \times 10^{-4}$, $(3^{+2}_{-1}) \times 10^{-4}$, and $(3.3\pm 0.8)\times 10^{-5}$, respectively. Assuming a solar silicon-to-carbon ratio, the $^{28}$SiO line emission model is consistent with about one-third of the silicon atoms being locked up in dust particles.

Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars lose their envelopes by means of a stellar wind whose driving mechanism is not understood well. Characterizing the composition and thermal and dynamical structure of the outflow provides constraints that are essential for understanding AGB evolution, including the rate of mass loss and isotopic ratios. We modeled the CO emission from the wind of the low mass-loss rate oxygen-rich AGB star W Hya using data obtained by the HIFI, PACS, and SPIRE instruments onboard the Herschel Space Observatory and ground-based telescopes. $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO lines are used to constrain the intrinsic $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratio from resolved HIFI lines. The acceleration of the outflow up to about 5.5 km/s is quite slow and can be represented by a beta-type velocity law with index 5. Beyond this point, acceleration up the terminal velocity of 7 km/s is faster. Using the J=10-9, 9-8, and 6-5 transitions, we find an intrinsic $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratio of $18\pm10$ for W Hya, where the error bar is mostly due to uncertainties in the $^{12}$CO abundance and the stellar flux around 4.6 $\mu$m. To match the low-excitation CO lines, these molecules need to be photo-dissociated at about 500 stellar radii. The radial dust emission intensity profile measured by PACS images at 70 $\mu$m shows substantially stronger emission than our model predicts beyond 20 arcsec. The initial slow acceleration of the wind implies inefficient wind driving in the lower part of the envelope. The final injection of momentum in the wind might be the result of an increase in the opacity thanks to the late condensation of dust species. The derived intrinsic isotopologue ratio for W Hya is consistent with values set by the first dredge-up and suggestive of an initial mass of 2 M$_\odot$ or more.
