Abstract

Evidence of the $K^+\to\mu^+\nu\bar\nu\nu$ decay was searched for using E949 experimental data with an exposure of $1.70\times 10^{12}$ stopped kaons. The data sample is dominated by the backgrond process $K^+\to\mu^+\nu_\mu\gamma$. An upper limit on the decay rate $\Gamma(K^+\to\mu^+\nu\bar\nu\nu)< 2.4\times 10^{-6}\Gamma(K^+\to all)$ at 90% confidence level was set assuming the Standard Model muon spectrum. The data are presented in such a way as to allow calculation of rates for any assumed $\mu^+$ spectrum., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Evidence of a heavy neutrino, $\nu_H$, in the $K^+\to\mu^+\nu_H$ decays was sought using the E949 experimental data with an exposure of $1.70\times 10^{12}$ stopped kaons. With the major background from the radiative $K^+\to\mu^+\nu_\mu\gamma$ decay understood and suppressed, upper limits (90% C.L.) on the neutrino mixing matrix element between muon and heavy neutrino, $|U_{\mu H}|^2$, were set at the level of $10^{-7}$ to $10^{-9}$ for the heavy neutrino mass region 175 to 300 MeV/$c^2$., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures; accepted by Physical Review D

Abstract

Experiment E949 at Brookhaven National Laboratory has observed three new events consistent with the decay K+ => pi+,nu,nubar in the pion momentum region 140 < P_pi < 199 MeV/c in an exposure of 1.71e12 stopped kaons with an estimated total background of 0.93+-0.17(stat.)+0.32-0.24(syst.) events. This brings the total number of observed K+ => pi+,nu,nubar events to seven. Combining this observation with previous results, assuming the pion spectrum predicted by the standard model, results in a branching ratio of (1.73+1.15-1.05)e-10. An interpretation of the results for alternative models of the decay K^ => pi+,nothing is also presented., Comment: Submitted to Phys.Rev. D

Abstract

In this short note we present results of background measurements carried out with a polystyrene based cast plastic 12.0x12.0x3.0 cm^3 size scintillator counter with a wavelength shifting fibre and a multi-pixel Geiger mode avalanche photodiode readout in the Baksan underground laboratory at a depth of 200 meters of water equivalent. The total counting rate of the scintillator counter measured at this depth and at a threshold corresponding to ~0.37 of a minimum ionizing particle is approximately 1.3 Hz., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, submitted to NIMA

Abstract

The K^+ \to \pi^0 \mu^+ \nu \gamma ($K_{\mu 3 \gamma}$) decay has been measured with stopped positive kaons at the KEK 12 GeV proton synchrotron. A $K_{\mu 3 \gamma}$ sample containing 125 events was obtained. The partial branching ratio $Br(K_{\mu 3 \gamma}, E_{\gamma}>30 {\rm MeV}, \theta_{\mu^+ \gamma}>20^{\circ})$ was found to be $[2.4 \pm 0.5(stat) \pm 0.6(syst)]\times 10^{-5}$, which is in good agreement with theoretical predictions., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Physics Letters B

Abstract

The $K^+ \to \pi^0 \pi^0 e^+ \nu$ ($K_{e4}^{00}$) decay has been measured with stopped positive kaons for a data sample of 216 events. A comparison of the observed spectra with a Monte Carlo simulation determined the $K_{e4}^{00}$ form factor. The results are compatible with the $K^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^- e^+ \nu$ data, as estimated from the $\Delta I=1/2$ rule. We also established that the $K_{e4}^{00}$ channel can be used to determine the $\pi$-$\pi$ scattering lengths., Comment: about 10 pages, 3figures

Abstract

A search for T-violating transverse muon polarization ($P_T$) in the $K^{+}\to \pi^{0}\mu^{+}\nu$ decay was performed using kaon decays at rest. A new improved value, $P_T= -0.0017\pm 0.0023 (stat)\pm 0.0011 (syst)$, was obtained giving an upper limit, $| P_T | < 0.0050$. The T-violation parameter was determined to be Im$\xi = -0.0053 \pm 0.0071(stat)\pm 0.0036(syst)$ giving an upper limit, $|$Im$\xi| <0.016$., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We present the result of the first measurement of the T-violating muon polarization P_T in the decay K^+ --> mu^+ nu gamma. This polarization is sensitive to new sources of CP-violation in the Higgs sector. Using data accumulated in the period 1996-98 we have obtained P_T = (-0.64 +- 1.85(stat) +- 0.10(syst))x10^{-2} which is consistent with no T-violation in this decay., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Evidence of a heavy neutrino, νH, in the K+ → µ+ νH decays was sought using the E949 experimental data with an exposure of 1.70 × 1012 stopped kaons. With the major background from the radiative K+ → µ+νµγ decay understood and suppressed, upper limits (90% C.L.) on the neutrino mixing matrix element between the muon and heavy neutrinos, |UµH|², were set at the level of 10-7 to 10-9 for the heavy neutrino mass region 175 to 300 MeV/c². Abstract

Three events for the decay K+-->pi+ nunu have been observed in the pion momentum region below the K+-->pi+pi0 peak, 140 < Ppi < 199 MeV/c, with an estimated background of 0.93+/-0.17(stat.) -0.24+0.32(syst.) events. Combining this observation with previously reported results yields a branching ratio of B(K+-->pi+ nunu) = (1.73(-1.05)+1.15) x 10(-10) consistent with the standard model prediction.

Abstract

A search for T-violating transverse muon polarization (P(T)) in the K+-->pi(0)mu(+)nu decay was performed using kaon decays at rest. A new improved value P(T)=-0.0017+/-0.0023(stat)+/-0.0011(syst) was obtained giving an upper limit |P(T)|<0.0050. The T-violation parameter was determined to be Imxi=-0.0053+/-0.0071(stat)+/-0.0036(syst) giving an upper limit |Imxi|<0.016.
