Abstract

Archaeologists commonly use the geographic patterning of sourced artifacts to understand how prehistoric cultures used their landscapes, yet exactly what this patterning indicates remains unclear. The Paleoindian literature reflects a tendency to assume that toolstone conveyance reflects direct acquisition (i.e., mobility) motivated by subsistence and technological concerns, rather than acquisition (i.e., exchange) motivated by social concerns. This tendency demonstrates a willingness on the part of many archaeologists to imagine Paleoindians organized on a physical landscape defined by the location of important material resources (e.g., food, water, stone), but a hesitancy to imagine Paleoindians organized on a social landscape defined by the location of other people. Yet the challenge of actually distinguishing between mobility and exchange persists. Here, I offer some ideas that might help us make headway on the linkage problem we confront when attempting to infer mode of acquisition from patterns of toolstone conveyance, focusing on the North American Great Basin. I imagine a Paleoindian cultural landscape defined, not just by the distribution of food and non-food resources, but also other people, to propose that mobility and exchange both contributed to the patterns of toolstone conveyance we see, perhaps operating at different scales in relation to subsistence, technological, and social motivations.

Abstract

Studies of toolstone procurement and conveyance in the North American Great Basin have generated an extensive database of geochemistry and provenance over the last few decades, and, more recently, provenance analyses have been extended to fine-grained volcanics (e.g., andesite and dacite). By comparison, our knowledge of chert provenance remains poor, a significant deficit given the predominance of chert in many lithic assemblages in the region. In this study, we combine visual and geochemical methods to source chert artifacts from the central Great Basin. We use visual attributes to narrow down the potential sources of chert artifacts from Paleoindian sites located in east-central Nevada. We then employ chemical data, acquired by portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (pXRF), to discriminate sources of macroscopically-similar cherts and assign artifacts to those sources. The results of our study suggest that, by combining visual and chemical data, we can source chert artifacts in the region, thereby providing additional insight into prehistoric lithic technological and socioeconomic organization in the Great Basin.

3. Empirical study of the effect of count time on the precision and accuracy of pXRF data

Abstract

As a cost-effective and non-destructive method for multi-element analysis, portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (pXRF) has the potential for broad archeological application; however, recent applications of pXRF remain inconsistent. For example, sourcing studies using pXRF have irradiated artifacts and geologic source materials for widely varying amounts of time. In this study, we investigate the effect of count time on the precision and accuracy of pXRF data obtained for two geologic standards, as well as for obsidian, fine-grained volcanic (e.g., andesites, dacites), metamorphic, and chert specimens from the North American Great Basin. We find that the precision and reliability of pXRF data does not improve significantly at count times greater than 180 s. Our analysis also indicates that count time has little bearing on the accuracy or validity of pXRF data, as expected from the mathematical relationships between count time, intensity, and concentration. Finally, we demonstrate that a well-calibrated pXRF instrument generates compositional data comparable to data obtained using other analytical methods. We offer this study as a step toward the development of a consistent and rigorous analytical protocol for archeological applications of pXRF.

Abstract

In this paper, I use the provenance analysis of fine-grained volcanic and chert artifacts from Paleoamerican sites in eastern Nevada to define patterns of toolstone conveyance that operated within and across the obsidian conveyance zones defined for the region. I suggest that patterns of obsidian, fine-grained volcanic, and chert conveyance may reflect different modes of resource acquisition (e.g., mobility and exchange) operating at different scales within a regional Paleoamerican socioeconomic system.

Abstract

International audience; We question several common elements of conventional descriptions of Early Paleoindian adaptations. Specifically, we examine the presumed scales of residential mobility, the role of high-quality lithics in these movements, and the extent to which First Americans hunted large game as a fundamental part of their food-getting activities. We compare the Early Paleoindian data to relevant information on hunting, mobility, and weaponry documented ethnohistorically and ethnographically. We then construct an alternative explanation for the Early Paleoindian record based on the premise that the hunting of large mammals, presumably by men, may have been motivated more by social and political factors than by the need to regularly and reliably provision a family or band with food. By proposing a plausible alternative explanation for the available data, we suggest that there is good reason to think critically about several of the basic components of the conventional view of Early Paleoindian adaptations.
