Abstract

Ti-6Al-4V Titanium alloy is well known as a material that is difficult to cut. Its unique properties made major industries, especially engineering fields, become attracted to it. Its resistance to corrosion and ability to withstand high temperatures without deformation made it applicable in making aerospace parts. This study is focused on investigating the effect of cutting parameters on characteristics of machinability performance. The turning process of titanium alloy was conducted in dry machining, and the cutting insert used is uncoated cemented carbide. Taguchi method is used to find the optimum cutting parameters for turning Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy with an orthogonal array of L9. Cutting speed (v), feed rate (f) and depth of cut (d) were selected as the cutting parameters, whereas cutting forces as the performance characteristics. The degree of influence of each process parameter on individual performance characteristics was analyzed from experimental results. The optimization parameter level was chosen by using the quality characteristic the-smaller-the-better. From the validation results, the values obtained for the three forces are significantly lower than those achieved in previous experiments. Analyzing cutting forces is important to prolong the tool life as well as minimising machining time and costs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

High demands on flexibility, lighter weight, thinner size and low-cost electronic product had increased the application of Flexible Printed Circuit Board (FPCB) over Rigid Printed Circuit Board (RPCB). However, the thermal factor affects FPCB significantly during the reflow soldering process. The temperature of the reflow soldering process causes the FPCB to encounter significant deflection and thermal stress compared to the RPCB. Therefore, the present experiment investigates the effect of temperature on FPCB layout during the reflow soldering process. The deformation of RPCB and FPCB was measured using a KEYENCE LK-G152 laser sensor placed at the entrance and outlet of the reflow oven. Two temperature profiles were used as a variable for the experiment: soaking temperature profile and ramp temperature profile. The investigation shows that component placements pattern influences the deformation of FPCB. The FPCB component placements reduce the deformation due to low wetting angle and component weight. FPCB solder joint has a good wetting angle (<90°), indicating good solder paste deposited on the FPCB. However, several solder joints on FPCB are irregular in shape due to high deformation. Abstract

This paper aims to investigate and present the numerical investigation of airflow characteristics using Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE) to characterize the upper airway with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) under inhale and exhale breathing conditions. The importance of TKE under both breathing conditions is that it showan accuratemethod in expressing the severity of flow in sleep disorder. Computational fluid dynamics simulate the upper airway's airflow via steady-state Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) with k--ω shear stress transport (SST) turbulencemodel. The three-dimensional (3D) airway model is created based on the CT scan images of an actual patient, meshed with 1.29 million elements using Materialise Interactive Medical Image Control System (MIMICS) and ANSYS software, respectively. High TKE were noticed around the region after the necking (smaller cross-sectional area) during the inhale and exhale breathing. The turbulent kinetic energy could be used as a valuablemeasure to identify the severity of OSA. This study is expected to provide a better understanding and clear visualization of the airflow characteristics during the inhale and exhale breathing in the upper airway of patients for medical practitioners in the OSA research field.
