Accurately estimating the position of a patient's side robotic arm in real time in a remote surgery task is a significant challenge, particularly in Tactile Internet (TI) environments. This paper presents a Kalman Filter (KF) based computationally efficient position estimation method. The study also assume no prior knowledge of the dynamic system model of the robotic arm system. Instead, The JIGSAW dataset, which is a comprehensive collection of robotic surgical data, and the Master Tool Manipulator's (MTM) input are utilized to learn the system model using System Identification (SI) toolkit available in Matlab. We further investigate the effectiveness of KF to determine the position of the Patient Side Manipulator (PSM) under simulated network conditions that include delays, jitter, and packet loss. These conditions reflect the typical challenges encountered in real-world Tactile Internet applications. In the 6G era, integrating Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) and Digital Twin (DT) technologies presents a transformative approach to enhance network performance through predictive, adaptive control for energy-efficient, low-latency communication. This paper presents the EcoEdgeTwin model, an innovative framework that harnesses the synergy between MEC and DT technologies to ensure efficient network operation. We optimize the utility function within the EcoEdgeTwin model to balance enhancing users' Quality of Experience (QoE) and minimizing latency and energy consumption at edge servers. This approach ensures efficient and adaptable network operations, utilizing DT to synchronize and integrate real-time data seamlessly. Our framework achieves this by implementing robust mechanisms for task offloading, service caching, and cost-effective service migration. Additionally, it manages energy consumption related to task processing, communication, and the influence of DT predictions, all essential for optimizing latency and minimizing energy usage. Through the utility model, we also prioritize QoE, fostering a user-centric approach to network management that balances network efficiency with user satisfaction. A cornerstone of our approach is integrating the advantage actor-critic algorithm, marking a pioneering use of deep reinforcement learning for dynamic network management. This strategy addresses challenges in service mobility and network variability, ensuring optimal network performance matrices. Our extensive simulations demonstrate that compared to benchmark models lacking DT integration, EcoEdgeTwin framework significantly reduces energy usage and latency while enhancing QoE.

Massive multiple input multiple output (M-MIMO) technology plays a pivotal role in fifth-generation (5G) and beyond communication systems, offering a wide range of benefits, from increased spectral efficiency (SE) to enhanced energy efficiency and higher reliability. However, these advantages are contingent upon precise channel state information (CSI) availability at the base station (BS). Ensuring precise CSI is challenging due to the constrained size of the coherence interval and the resulting limitations on pilot sequence length. Therefore, reusing pilot sequences in adjacent cells introduces pilot contamination, hindering SE enhancement. This paper reviews recent advancements and addresses research challenges in mitigating pilot contamination and improving channel estimation, categorizing the existing research into three broader categories: pilot assignment schemes, advanced signal processing methods, and advanced channel estimation techniques. Salient representative pilot mitigation/assignment techniques are analyzed and compared in each category. 5G sets the foundation for an era of creativity with its faster speeds, increased data throughput, reduced latency, and enhanced IoT connectivity, all enabled by Massive MIMO (M-MIMO) technology. M-MIMO boosts network efficiency and enhances user experience by employing intelligent user scheduling. This paper presents a user scheduling scheme and pilot assignment strategy designed for IoT devices, emphasizing mitigating pilot contamination, a key obstacle to improving spectral efficiency (SE) and system scalability in M-MIMO networks. We utilize a user clustering-based pilot allocation scheme to boost IoT device scalability in M-MIMO systems. Additionally, our smart pilot allocation minimizes interference and enhances SE by treating pilot assignment as a graph coloring problem, optimizing it through integer linear programming (ILP). Recognizing the computational complexity of ILP, we introduced a binary search-based heuristic predicated on interference threshold to expedite the computation, while maintaining a near-optimal solution. Massive MIMO is expected to play an important role in the development of 5G networks. This paper addresses the issue of pilot contamination and scalability in massive MIMO systems. The current practice of reusing orthogonal pilot sequences in adjacent cells leads to difficulty in differentiating incoming inter- and intra-cell pilot sequences. One possible solution is to increase the number of orthogonal pilot sequences, which results in dedicating more space of coherence block to pilot transmission than data transmission. This, in turn, also hinders the scalability of massive MIMO systems, particularly in accommodating a large number of IoT devices within a cell. To overcome these challenges, this paper devises an innovative pilot allocation scheme based on the data transfer patterns of IoT devices. The scheme assigns orthogonal pilot sequences to clusters of devices instead of individual devices, allowing multiple devices to utilize the same pilot for periodically transmitting data. Moreover, we formulate the pilot assignment problem as a graph coloring problem and use the max k-cut graph partitioning approach to overcome the pilot contamination in a multicell massive MIMO system. The proposed scheme significantly improves the spectral efficiency and enables the scalability of massive MIMO systems; for instance, by using ten orthogonal pilot sequences, we are able to accommodate 200 devices with only a 12.5% omission rate., Comment: Accepted At GLOBECOM 2023

The Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is one of the most often-used NP-Hard problems in computer science to study the effectiveness of computing models and hardware platforms. In this regard, it is also heavily used as a vehicle to study the feasibility of the quantum computing paradigm for this class of problems. In this paper, we tackle the TSP using the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) approach by formulating it as an optimization problem. By adopting an improved qubit encoding strategy and a layerwise learning optimization protocol, we present numerical results obtained from the gate-based digital quantum simulator, specifically targeting TSP instances with 3, 4, and 5 cities. We focus on the evaluations of three distinctive QAOA mixer designs, considering their performances in terms of numerical accuracy and optimization cost. Notably, we find a well-balanced QAOA mixer design exhibits more promising potential for gate-based simulators and realistic quantum devices in the long run, an observation further supported by our noise model simulations. Furthermore, we investigate the sensitivity of the simulations to the TSP graph. The Quantum Fourier Transform (QFT) grants competitive advantages, especially in resource usage and circuit approximation, for performing arithmetic operations on quantum computers, and offers a potential route towards a numerical quantum-computational paradigm. In this paper, we utilize efficient techniques to implement QFT-based integer addition and multiplications. These operations are fundamental to various quantum applications including Shor's algorithm, weighted sum optimization problems in data processing and machine learning, and quantum algorithms requiring inner products. We carry out performance evaluations of these implementations based on IBM's superconducting qubit architecture using different compatible noise models. We isolate the sensitivity of the component quantum circuits on both one-/two-qubit gate error rates, and the number of the arithmetic operands' superposed integer states. We analyze performance, and identify the most effective approximation depths for quantum add and quantum multiply within the given context. We observe significant dependency of the optimal approximation depth on the degree of machine noise and the number of superposed states in certain performance regimes. Finally, we elaborate on the algorithmic challenges - relevant to signed, unsigned, modular and non-modular versions - that could also be applied to current implementations of QFT-based subtraction, division, exponentiation, and their potential tensor extensions. We analyze performance trends in our results and speculate on possible future development within this computational paradigm.

Intricating cardiac complexities are the primary factor associated with healthcare costs and the highest cause of death rate in the world. However, preventive measures like the early detection of cardiac anomalies can prevent severe cardiovascular arrests of varying complexities and can impose a substantial impact on healthcare cost. Encountering such scenarios usually the electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is the first diagnostic choice of a medical practitioner or clinical staff to measure the electrical and muscular fitness of an individual heart. This paper presents a system which is capable of reading the recorded ECG and predict the cardiac anomalies without the intervention of a human expert. The paper purpose an algorithm which read and perform analysis on electrocardiogram datasets. The proposed architecture uses the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) at first place to perform preprocessing of ECG data followed by undecimated Wavelet transform (UWT) to extract nine relevant features which are of high interest to a cardiologist. The probabilistic mode named Bayesian Network Classifier is trained using the extracted nine parameters on UCL arrhythmia dataset. The proposed system classifies a recorded heartbeat into four classes using Bayesian Network classifier and Tukey's box analysis. The four classes for the prediction of a heartbeat are (a) Normal Beat, (b) Premature Ventricular Contraction (PVC) (c) Premature Atrial Contraction (PAC) and (d) Myocardial Infarction. The results of experimental setup depict that the proposed system has achieved an average accuracy of 96.6 for PAC\% 92.8\% for MI and 87\% for PVC, with an average error rate of 3.3\% for PAC, 6\% for MI and 12.5\% for PVC on real electrocardiogram datasets including Physionet and European ST-T Database (EDB).

Utilizing device-to-device (D2D) connections among mobile devices is promising to meet the increasing throughput demand over cellular links. In particular, when mobile devices are in close proximity of each other and are interested in the same content, D2D connections such as Wi-Fi Direct can be opportunistically used to construct a cooperative (and jointly operating) cellular and D2D networking system. However, it is crucial to understand, quantify, and exploit the potential of network coding for cooperating mobile devices in the joint cellular and D2D setup. In this paper, we consider this problem, and (i) develop a network coding framework, namely NCMI, for cooperative mobile devices in the joint cellular and D2D setup, where cellular and D2D link capacities are the same, and (ii) characterize the performance of the proposed network coding framework, where we use packet completion time, which is the number of transmission slots to recover all packets, as a performance metric. We demonstrate the benefits of our network coding framework through simulations.

Readmission rates in the hospitals are increasingly being used as a benchmark to determine the quality of healthcare delivery to hospitalized patients. Around three-fourths of all hospital re-admissions can be avoided, saving billions of dollars. Many hospitals have now deployed electronic health record (EHR) systems that can be used to study issues that trigger readmission. However, most of the EHRs are high dimen-sional and sparsely populated, and analyzing such data sets is a Big Data challenge. The effect of some of the well-known dimension reduction techniques is minimized due to presence of non-linear variables. We use association mining as a dimension reduction method and the results are used to develop models, using data from an existing nursing EHR system, for predicting risk of re-admission to the hospitals. These models can help in determining effective treatments for patients to minimize the possibility of re-admission, bringing down the cost and increasing the quality of care provided to the patients. Results from the models show significantly accurate predictions of patient re-admission.

Cooperation among mobile devices and utilizing multiple interfaces such as cellular and local area links simultaneously are promising to meet the increasing throughput demand over cellular links. In particular, when mobile devices are in the close proximity of each other and are interested in the same content, device-to-device connections such as WiFi-Direct, in addition to cellular links, can be utilized to construct a cooperative system. However, it is crucial to understand the potential of network coding for cooperating mobile devices with multiple interfaces. In this paper, we consider this problem, and (i) develop network coding schemes for cooperative mobile devices with multiple interfaces, and (ii) characterize the performance of network coding by using the number of transmissions to recover all packets as a performance metric.

Consider a scenario of broadcasting a common content to a group of cooperating mobile devices that are within proximity of each other. Devices in this group may receive partial content from the source due to packet losses over wireless broadcast links. We further consider that packet losses are different for different devices. The remaining missing content at each device can then be recovered, thanks to cooperation among the devices by exploiting device-to-device (D2D) connections. In this context, the minimum amount of time that can guarantee a complete acquisition of the common content at every device is referred to as the "completion time". It has been shown that instantly decodable network coding (IDNC) reduces the completion time as compared to no network coding in this scenario. Yet, for applications such as video streaming, not all packets have the same importance and not all devices are interested in the same quality of content. This problem is even more interesting when additional, but realistic constraints, such as strict deadline, bandwidth, or limited energy are added in the problem formulation. We assert that direct application of IDNC in such a scenario yields poor performance in terms of content quality and completion time. In this paper, we propose a novel Content and Loss-Aware IDNC scheme that improves content quality and network coding opportunities jointly by taking into account importance of each packet towards the desired quality of service (QoS) as well as the channel losses over D2D links. Our proposed Content and Loss-Aware IDNC (i) maximizes the quality under the completion time constraint, and (ii) minimizes the completion time under the quality constraint. Compressive Sensing (CS) has been applied successfully in a wide variety of applications in recent years, including photography, shortwave infrared cameras, optical system research, facial recognition, MRI, etc. In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), significant research work has been pursued to investigate the use of CS to reduce the amount of data communicated, particularly in data aggregation applications and thereby improving energy efficiency. However, most of the previous work in WSN has used CS under the assumption that data field is smooth with negligible white Gaussian noise. In these schemes signal sparsity is estimated globally based on the entire data field, which is then used to determine the CS parameters. In more realistic scenarios, where data field may have regional fluctuations or it is piecewise smooth, existing CS based data aggregation schemes yield poor compression efficiency. In order to take full advantage of CS in WSNs, we propose an Adaptive Hierarchical Data Aggregation using Compressive Sensing (A-HDACS) scheme. The proposed schemes dynamically chooses sparsity values based on signal variations in local regions. We prove that A-HDACS enables more sensor nodes to employ CS compared to the schemes that do not adapt to the changing field. The simulation results also demonstrate the improvement in energy efficiency as well as accurate signal recovery.

Compressive Sensing (CS) method is a burgeoning technique being applied to diverse areas including wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In WSNs, it has been studied in the context of data gathering and aggregation, particularly aimed at reducing data transmission cost and improving power efficiency. Existing CS based data gathering work in WSNs assume fixed and uniform compression threshold across the network, regard- less of the data field characteristics. In this paper, we present a novel data aggregation architecture model that combines a multi- resolution structure with compressed sensing. The compression thresholds vary over the aggregation hierarchy, reflecting the underlying data field. Compared with previous relevant work, the proposed model shows its significant energy saving from theoretical analysis. We have also implemented the proposed CS- based data aggregation framework on a SIDnet SWANS platform, discrete event simulator commonly used for WSN simulations. Existing information theoretic work in decentralized detection is largely focused on parallel configuration of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), where an individual hard or soft decision is computed at each sensor node and then transmitted directly to the fusion node. Such an approach is not efficient for large networks, where communication structure is likely to comprise of multiple hops. On the other hand, decentralized detection problem investigated for multi-hop networks is mainly concerned with reducing number and/or size of messages by using compression and fusion of information at intermediate nodes. In this paper an energy efficient multi-hop configuration of WSNs is proposed to solve the detection problem in large networks with two objectives: maximizing network lifetime and minimizing probability of error in the fusion node. This optimization problem is considered under the constraint of total consumed energy. The two objectives mentioned are achieved simultaneously in the multi-hop configuration by exploring tradeoffs between different path lengths and number of bits allocated to each node for quantization. Simulation results show significant improvement in the proposed multi-hop configuration compared with the parallel configuration in terms of energy efficiency and detection accuracy for different size networks, especially in larger networks.

In an implicit combinatorial optimization problem, the constraints are not enumerated explicitly but rather stated implicitly through equations, other constraints or auxiliary algorithms. An important subclass of such problems is the implicit set cover (or, equivalently, hitting set) problem in which the sets are not given explicitly but rather defined implicitly For example, the well-known minimum feedback arc set problem is such a problem. Multiple Sequences Alignment (MSA) of biological sequences is a fundamental problem in computational biology due to its critical significance in wide ranging applications including haplotype reconstruction, sequence homology, phylogenetic analysis, and prediction of evolutionary origins. The MSA problem is considered NP-hard and known heuristics for the problem do not scale well with increasing number of sequences. On the other hand, with the advent of new breed of fast sequencing techniques it is now possible to generate thousands of sequences very quickly. For rapid sequence analysis, it is therefore desirable to develop fast MSA algorithms that scale well with the increase in the dataset size. In this paper, we present a novel domain decomposition based technique to solve the MSA problem on multiprocessing platforms. The domain decomposition based technique, in addition to yielding better quality, gives enormous advantage in terms of execution time and memory requirements. The proposed strategy allows to decrease the time complexity of any known heuristic of O(N)^x complexity by a factor of O(1/p)^x, where N is the number of sequences, x depends on the underlying heuristic approach, and p is the number of processing nodes. In particular, we propose a highly scalable algorithm, Sample-Align-D, for aligning biological sequences using Muscle system as the underlying heuristic. Multiple Sequence Alignment (MSA) is one of the most computationally intensive tasks in Computational Biology. Existing best known solutions for multiple sequence alignment take several hours (in some cases days) of computation time to align, for example, 2000 homologous sequences of average length 300. Inspired by the Sample Sort approach in parallel processing, in this paper we propose a highly scalable multiprocessor solution for the MSA problem in phylogenetically diverse sequences. Our method employs an intelligent scheme to partition the set of sequences into smaller subsets using kmer count based similarity index, referred to as k-mer rank. Each subset is then independently aligned in parallel using any sequential approach. Further fine tuning of the local alignments is achieved using constraints derived from a global ancestor of the entire set. The proposed Sample-Align-D Algorithm has been implemented on a cluster of workstations using MPI message passing library. The accuracy of the proposed solution has been tested on standard benchmarks such as PREFAB. The accuracy of the alignment produced by our methods is comparable to that of well known sequential MSA techniques. Pyrosequencing is among the emerging sequencing techniques, capable of generating upto 100,000 overlapping reads in a single run. This technique is much faster and cheaper than the existing state of the art sequencing technique such as Sanger. However, the reads generated by pyrosequencing are short in size and contain numerous errors. Furthermore, each read has a specific position in the reference genome. In order to use these reads for any subsequent analysis, the reads must be aligned . Existing multiple sequence alignment methods cannot be used as they do not take into account the specific positions of the sequences with respect to the genome, and are highly inefficient for large number of sequences. Therefore, the common practice has been to use either simple pairwise alignment despite its poor accuracy for error prone pyroreads, or use computationally expensive techniques based on sequential gap propagation. In this paper, we develop a computationally efficient method based on domain decomposition, referred to as pyro-align, to align such large number of reads. The proposed alignment algorithm accurately aligns the erroneous reads in a short period of time, which is orders of magnitude faster than any existing method.
