In addition, spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) are necessary for the improvement of spermatogenesis subsequent to exposure to cytotoxic agents such as cisplatin. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the anticancer activity of cisplatin-loaded folic acid-conjugated poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs) on mouse malignant cell line (EL4) and SSCs in vitro. Methods: SSCs were co-cultured with mouse malignant cell line (EL4) cells and divided into four culture groups: 1) control (cells were co-cultured in the culture medium), 2) co-cultured cells were treated with cisplatin (10 μg/mL), 3) co-cultured cells were treated with cisplatin-loaded folic acid-conjugated PLGA NPs, and 4) co-cultures were treated with folic acid-conjugated PLGA for 48 hours. The NPs were prepared, characterized, and targeted with folate. In vitro release characteristics, loading efficiency, and scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images were studied. Cancer cells were assayed after treatment using flow cytometry and TUNEL assay. The co-cultures of SSCs and EL4 cells were injected into seminiferous tubules of the testes after treating with cis-diaminedichloroplatinum/PLGA NPs. Results: The mean diameter of PLGA NPs ranged between 150 and 250 nm. The number of TUNEL-positive cells increased, and the expression of Bax and caspase-3 were upregulated in EL4 cells in Group 4 compared with Group 2. There was no pathological tumor in testes after transplantation with treated co-cultured cells. Conclusion: The PLGA NPs appeared to act as a promising carrier for cisplatin administration, which was consistent with a higher activation of apoptosis than free drug. Background: Drug nano-carriers are one of the most important tools for targeted cancer therapy so that undesired side effects of chemotherapy drugs are minimized. In this area, the use of ultrasound can be helpful in controlling drug release from nanoparticles to achieve higher treatment efficiency. Objective: Here, we studies the effects of ultrasound irradiation on the release profile of 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) loaded magnetic poly lactic co-glycolic acid (PLGA) nanocapsules. Methods: 5-Fu loaded magnetic PLGA nanocapsules were synthesized by multiple emulsification method. Particle size was measured by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The pattern of drug release was assessed with and without 3 MHz ultrasound waves at intensities of 0.3, 0.5 and 1 w/ cm2 for exposure time of 5 and 10 min in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). Results: The size of nanoparticles was about 70 nm. Electron microscope images revealed the spherical shape of nanoparticles. The results demonstrated that the intensity and exposure time of ultrasound irradiation have significant effects on the profile of drug release from nanoparticles. Conclusion: It may be concluded that the application of ultrasound to control the release profile of drug loaded nanocapsules would be a promising method to develop a controlled drug delivery strategy in cancer therapy.

Patients with diabetes mellitus frequently experience urinary tract infections (UTIs). In the present study, we looked at how glycemic control affects diabetic patients' rates of UTI, the causing pathogens, the presence of multi-drug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant organisms, and the infections' relation to diabetes. Diabetes patients' midstream urine samples were included, after collecting and identifying the organisms, disc diffusion antibiotic sensitivity tests were conducted. The HbA1c was measured for all patients. A total of 500 diabetic patients provided urine samples for this study, and 189 (37.2%) of them had UTIs. Compared to 59 patients with managed glycemia, 130 individuals in the uncontrolled glycemic group experienced the most UTI cases. In both diabetic groups, females had a significantly higher prevalence of UTI than males (88.4% and 11.6%, respectively). The most common bacterial isolate, E. coli, displayed 58.4% MDR. Regardless of age or gender, glycemic control in diabetes patients is essential for decreasing UTI rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The genus Aeromonas is a widespread pathogen that includes more than 30 Gram-negative species, many of which are opportunistic bacteria. Aeromonas species are naturally distributed in various aquatic sources. Infectious processes in marine animals such as fish usually develop under stressful conditions, and when their immune systems are weakened. MicroRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) are short, non-coding RNAs that post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression. Their diverse biological functions, such as influencing cell development, proliferation, differentiation, tumorigenesis, metabolism, and apoptosis have been studied in various animals. Fish is the most important source of aquatic nutrients throughout the world, and its market is constantly growing. Overpopulation in aquaculture brings infectious diseases that threaten the development of aquaculture around the world. There is extensive evidence that microRNAs are involved in modulating infectious processes and regulating the inflammatory response to major bacterial fish infections, including Aeromonas. Here, we review the current literature on the fish microRNA repertoire and outline the physiological roles assigned to microRNAs to provide a foundation for future research during Aeromonas infection. Understanding the interaction between microRNAs and Aeromonas may provide clues to a remarkable strategy for preventing Aeromonas infections in fish. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nitrogen-doped diamond-like carbon films were deposited on tool steel substrate througha plasma electrolytic technique. These coatings were fabricated using the hydrocarbons containing nitrogen vapor as a nitrogen and source. The formation of films was proved by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction patterns, and cross-section scanning electron microscopy. According to the results, by increasing the urea content, the highest amount of Raman intensity ratio for graphite/disordered graphite (ID/IG) was obtained 3.57. On the other hand, N-doped DLC, graphite and nitride phases in X-ray diffraction patterns were observed. The N-doped films had better tribological properties because of significant nitride phases and less surface roughness with an optimum amount of 1.229 μm for the sample with 4 wt. % urea. The friction coefficient of films was obtained as about 0.1–0.25. Subsequently, the sample with 4 wt. % urea indicated the maximum wear resistance by 70 m compared with 10 m resistance for the sample with 0 wt. % urea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Retrotransposons (RTNs) constitute informative molecular markers for plant species because of their ability to integrate into a multitude of loci throughout the genome and thereby generate insertional polymorphisms between individuals. In the present study, RTN-based molecular markers, IRAP (inter-retrotransposon amplified polymorphism) and REMAP (retrotransposon-microsatellite amplified polymorphism), were applied to study RTN integration events and genetic diversity in 100 melon genotypes (88 genotypes from 11 populations, three inbred lines, and 9 hybrids). A total of 94 and 262 loci were amplified using 5 IRAP and 15 REMAP primers, respectively. The percentage of polymorphic loci (PPL) in populations ranged from 39% (Zivari Shahrood) to 48% (Shadegani E). The Mantel test between IRAP and REMAP cophenetic matrices evidenced no significant correlation (r= 0.29). IRAP+REMAP-based cluster analysis using UPGMA algorithm and Dice similarity coefficient depicted 6 groups among 100 melon genotypes. AMOVA revealed the higher level of genetic variation within populations (67%) compared to among populations (33%). The mean Fst values of all groups, except for group VI, were more than 0.20, demonstrating differentiation among the populations and genetic structure of the studied melon collection. Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly prevalent and aggressive brain tumor in adults with limited treatment response, leading to a 5-year survival rate of less than 5%. Standard therapies, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, often fall short due to the tumor's location, hypoxic conditions, and the challenge of complete removal. Moreover, brain metastases from cancers such as breast and melanoma carry similarly poor prognoses. Recent advancements in nanomedicine offer promising solutions for targeted GBM therapies, with nanoparticles (NPs) capable of delivering chemotherapy drugs or radiation sensitizers across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to specific tumor sites. Leveraging the enhanced permeability and retention effect, NPs can preferentially accumulate in tumor tissues, where compromised BBB regions enhance delivery efficiency. By modifying NP characteristics such as size, shape, and surface charge, researchers have improved circulation times and cellular uptake, enhancing therapeutic efficacy. Recent studies show that combining photothermal therapy with magnetic hyperthermia using AuNPs and magnetic NPs induces ROS-dependent apoptosis and immunogenic cell death providing dual-targeted, immune-activating approaches. This review discusses the latest NP-based drug delivery strategies, including gene therapy, receptor-mediated transport, and multi-modal approaches like photothermal-magnetic hyperthermia combinations, all aimed at optimizing therapeutic outcomes for GBM., (© 2024. Background: Diarrheal illness is a prominent public health worry in developing countries, resulting in high mortality among children. Sociodemographic characteristics and geographic settings are the main effective factors for the increased incidence of childhood diarrhea. Aeromonas is a neglected organism capable of causing dysentery and diarrhea. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the prevalence of Aeromonas as an agent in the causation of diarrhea in Asian children. Methods: We conducted a systematic review using Web of Science, PubMed, Wiley Online Library, Science Direct, and Google Scholar for peer-reviewed articles published between January 2000 and February 2023. We considered studies that found Aeromonas in diarrheal stool. A random-effects model was used to determine the pooled prevalence of Aeromonas . Results: Our search returned 2,057 articles, with 17 articles from seven Asian nations being included in the systematic review. The pooled prevalence of Aeromonas was 4.5% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.9%-6.8%), with heterogeneity ( I 2 = 96.85; p < 0.001). There was a greater prevalence in areas with high population living in poverty (12.2%; 95% CI: 5.8%-24%) and lower-middle-income countries (5.0%; 95% CI: 2.7%-9.0%). In addition, the prevalence of Aeromonas was greater in South Asia (10.0%; 95% CI: 5.6%-17.2%), in India (12.9%; 95% CI: 6.8%-23%), and in countries with open defecation rate of 5%-25% (11.3%; 95% CI: 6.3%-19.2%). Conclusion: The prevalence of Aeromonas -associated diarrhea in children in Asia estimated in the present study highlighted the high burden of Aeromonas in some parts of Asia.

Doxorubicin (DOX), a chemotherapy drug, has demonstrated limited efficacy against glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor with resistance attributed to the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This study aims to overcome this challenge by proposing the targeted delivery of magnetic Janus nanoparticles (MJNPs) functionalized with folic acid ligands, fluorescent dye, and doxorubicin (DOX/MJNPs-FLA). The properties of these nanoparticles were comprehensively evaluated using bio-physiochemical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential analysis, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), fluorescence microscopy, MTT assay, hemolysis assay, and liver enzyme level evaluation. Dual-controlled DOX release was investigated under different pH and temperature conditions. Additionally, the impact of DOX/MJNPs-FLA on apoptosis induction in tumor cells, body weight, and survival time of cancerous animals was assessed. The targeted delivery system was assessed using C6 and OLN-93 cell lines as representatives of cancerous and healthy cell lines, respectively, alongside Wistar rat tumor-bearing models. Results from Prussian blue staining and confocal microscopy tests demonstrated the effective targeted internalization of MJNPs-FLA by glioblastoma cells. Additionally, we investigated the biodistribution of the nanoparticles utilizing fluorescence imaging techniques. This enabled us to track the distribution pattern of MJNPs-FLA in vivo , shedding light on their movement and accumulation within the biological system. Furthermore, the combination of chemotherapy and magnetic hyperthermia exhibited enhanced efficacy in inducing apoptosis, as evidenced by the increase of the pro-apoptotic Bax gene and a decrease in the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 gene. Remarkably, this combination treatment did not cause any hepatotoxicity. This study highlights the potential of DOX/MJNPs-FLA as carriers for therapeutic and diagnostic agents in the context of theranostic applications for the treatment of brain malignancies. Additionally, it demonstrates the promising performance of DOX/MJNPs-FLA in combination treatment through passive and active targeting.

Background: Hydatid cysts (HC) are zoonotic diseases that are mainly caused by Echinococcus granulosus . Ovarian HC is a rare condition with different and unspecified presentations. Here we report a rare case of primary ovarian HC., Case Presentation: A 47-year-old woman with chronic abdominal pain and left hemipelvic fullness was referred to the Obstetrics Clinic of the Kowsar Hospital of Qazvin. Abdominopelvic sonography revealed a cystic mass, which primarily suggested a cyst adenoma. The tumor marker levels were within normal limits. After surgical resection, histopathological examination showed a cystic mass with dimensions of 10×6×3 cm, smooth external and internal aspects, wall thickness of 0.3 cm, and multiple pieces of irregular gray membranous tissue. The patient was treated with albendazole 3 months after surgery, and a 6-month follow-up sonogram revealed no signs of recurrence., Discussion: HC has non-specific presentations. Radiologists, pathologists, and surgeons should consider HC as a differential diagnosis for any cystic mass in the pelvic cavity, especially in endemic areas. The goal of this work was to examine the heat-sensitizing effects of Janus-coated magnetic nanoparticles (JMNPs) as a vehicle for 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) and Quercetin (Qu) in C6 and OLN-93 cell lines. The cellular uptake of nanoparticles was evaluated using Prussian blue staining and ICP-OES after monolayer culturing of C6 (rat brain cancer cell) and OLN-93 (normal rat brain cell) cells. The cells were treated with free 5-Fu, Qu, and MJNPs loaded with Qu/5-Fu for 24 h, followed by magnetic hyperthermia under an alternating magnetic field (AMF) at a temperature of 43 °C. Using the MTT test and Flow cytometry, the C6 and OLN-93 cells were investigated after being subjected to hyperthermia with and without magnetic nanoparticles. The results of Prussian blue staining confirmed the potential of MJNPs as carriers that facilitate the uptake of drugs by cancer cells. The results showed that the combined application of Qu/5-Fu/MJNPs with hyperthermia significantly increased the amount of ROS production compared to interventions without MJNPs. The therapeutic results demonstrated that the combination of Qu/5-Fu/MJNPs with hyperthermia considerably enhanced the rate of apoptotic and necrotic cell death compared to that of interventions without MJNPs. Furthermore, MTT findings indicated that controlled exposure of Qu/5-Fu/MJNPs to AMF caused a synergistic effect. Malignant neoplasms are one of the main causes of death, especially in children, on a global scale, despite strenuous efforts made at advancing both diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. In this regard, a new nanocarrier Vincristine (VCR)-loaded Pluronic f127 polymer-coated magnetic nanoparticles conjugated with folic acid and transferrin (PMNP-VCR-FA-TF) were synthesized and characterized by various methods. The cytotoxicity of these nanoparticles was evaluated in vitro and ex vivo conditions. The in vitro anti-tumor effect of the nanoparticles was evaluated by colony formation assay (CFA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in Y79 cell line. The results showed that nanoparticles with two ligands conferred greater toxicity toward Y79 cancer cells than ARPE19 normal cells. Under an alternating magnetic field (AMF), these nanoparticles demonstrated a high specific absorption rate. The CFA and ROS results indicated that the AMF in combination with PMNP-VCR-FA-TF conferred the highest cytotoxicity toward Y79 cells compared with other groups (P < 0.05). PMNP-VCR-FA-TF could play an important role in converting externally applied radiofrequency energy into heat in cancer cells. The present study confirmed that dual targeting chemo-hyperthermia using PMNP-VCR-FA-TF was significantly more effective than hyperthermia or chemotherapy alone, providing a promising platform for precision drug delivery as an essential component in the chemotherapy of retinoblastoma., (© 2023. Purpose: In recent years, the use of nanoparticles has been developed to improve MRI contrast. To improve the contrast agents in image-guided therapy by Multifunctional nanoparticles, in this study, we synthesized a theranostic magneto-plasmonic nanocomplex based on magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and bovine serum albumin-modified gold nanorod (Au@BSA-Fe3O4@CMD). The purpose of synthesizing these nanoparticles was to use them as MRI contrast agent and photothermal agents in in vitro and in vivo experiments., Materials and Methods: Initially, the properties of the synthesized nanoparticles were investigated by methods such as DLS, TEM, FTIR. MTT assay was used to evaluate the toxicity of nanoparticles. Finally, to evaluate the contrast ability of nanoparticles, MRI images were taken in in vitro and in vivo conditions and then the images were analyzed., Results: MTT test results on CT26 cell line showed no significant cytotoxicity for Au@BSA-Fe 3 O 4 @CMD nanoparticles at concentrations up to 20 ppm. The in vitro results demonstrated that the Au@BSA-Fe 3 O 4 @CMD nanocomplex has high T 2 relaxation rate and great relaxivities (r 2  = 140.14 mM -1  s -1 , r 1  = 2.066 mM -1  s -1 , r 2 /r 1  = 67.83). For in vivo conditions, a decrease in T2 signal of 9.64 and 11.01, respectively, was observed for intratumoral and intraperitoneal injection of nanoparticles., Conclusion: These in vitro and in vivo studies show that Au @ BSA-Fe 3 O 4 @CMD nanoparticles can significantly reduce the signal intensity of T2-weight MRI images, and therefore can offer significant potential as a theranostic platform for effective tumor MR imaging., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2023. A pivotal cause of death in the modern world, cancer is an insidious pathology that should be diagnosed at an early stage for successful treatment. Development of therapeutic interventions with minimal invasiveness and high efficacy that can discriminate between tumor and normal cells is of particular interest to the clinical science, as they can enhance patient survival. Nanoparticles are an invaluable asset that can be adopted for development of such diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, since they come in very small sizes with modifiable surface, are highly safe and stable, and can be synthesized in a controlled fashion. To date, different nanoparticles have been incorporated into numerous modalities such as tumor-targeted therapy, thermal therapy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. This review article seeks to deliver a brief account of recent advances in research and application of nanoparticles in hyperthermia-based cancer therapies. The most recent investigations are summarized to highlight the latest advances in the development of combined thermo-chemo-radiotherapy, along with the challenges associated with the application of nanoparticles in cancer therapy. Background: Nano-photothermal therapy (NPTT) has gained wide attention in cancer treatment due to its high efficiency and selective treatment strategy. The biggest challenges in the clinical application are the lack of (i) a reliable platform for mapping the thermal dose and (ii) efficient photothermal agents (PTAs). This study developed a 3D treatment planning for NPTT to reduce the uncertainty of treatment procedures, based on our synthesized nanohybrid., Methods: This study aimed to develop a three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) model for in vivo NPTT in mice using magneto-plasmonic nanohybrids, which are complex assemblies of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and gold nanorods. The model was based on Pennes' bio-heat equation and utilized a geometrically correct mice whole-body. CT26 colon tumor-bearing BALB/c mice were injected with nanohybrids and imaged using MRI (3 Tesla) before and after injection. MR images were segmented, and STereoLithography (STL) files of mice bodies and nanohybrid distribution in the tumor were established to create a realistic geometry for the model. The accuracy of the temperature predictions was validated by using an infrared (IR) camera., Results: The photothermal conversion efficiency of the nanohybrids was experimentally determined to be approximately 30%. The intratumoral (IT) injection group showed the highest temperature increase, with a maximum of 17 °C observed at the hottest point on the surface of the tumor-bearing mice for 300 s of laser exposure at a power density of 1.4 W/cm 2 . Furthermore, the highest level of tissue damage, with a maximum value of Ω = 0.4, was observed in the IT injection group, as determined through a simulation study., Conclusions: Our synthesized nanohybrid shows potential as an effective agent for MRI-guided NPTT. The developed model accurately predicted temperature distributions and tissue damage in the tumor. However, the current temperature validation method, which relies on limited 2D measurements, may be too lenient. Further refinement is necessary to improve validation. Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a re-emerging viral haemorrhagic fever causing outbreaks in Iran in the last 15 years. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, the status of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) in ticks would be evaluated. PubMed, Google Scholar and Web of Science were searched for peer-reviewed original papers published between 2000 and 1 July 2022. We included papers that evaluated the prevalence of CCHFV in individual ticks using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The pooled prevalence of CCHFV was 6.0% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.5-7.9%), with heterogeneity (I 2  = 82.706; P < 0.0001). The prevalence of CCHFV was higher related to regions with above sea level of 1001-1500m (6.4%; 95% CI: 4.3-9.5%), an average temperature of ≤15 °C (8.3%; 95% CI: 5.6-12.0%), latitude of ≥36° (8.1%; 95% CI: 5.2-12.3%), an annual rainfall of 101-300 mm (9.8%; 95% CI: 6.1-15.4%) and humidity of ≥61% (10.2%; 95% CI: 5.1-19.3%). MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, noncoding RNAs with important functions in development, cell differentiation, and regulation of cell cycle and apoptosis. MiRNA expression is deregulated in various pathological processes including tumorigenesis and cancer progression through various mechanisms including amplification or deletion of miRNA genes, mutations, and epigenetic silencing and defects in the miRNA biogenesis machinery. Several studies have now shown abnormal miRNA profiles and proved their involvement in the initiation and progression of cancer. Since miR-452 has diverse roles (as suppressor or oncogene) in different cellular processes including epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), proliferation, migration, and invasion, in this review we highlight a brief overview of the biological function and regulatory mechanism of miR-452 and its involvement as a potential biomarker for diagnosis and treatment of various cancer types., (© 2023. Background: Glioblastoma is the most common primary malignant tumor of the central nervous system. The patient's median survival rate is 13.5 months, so it is necessary to explore new therapeutic approaches., Objective: Extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field (EMF) has been explored as a noninvasive cancer treatment. This study applied the EMF with previous conventional chemoradiotherapy for glioblastoma., Methods: In this study, we evaluated the cytotoxic effects of EMF (50 Hz, 100 G), temozolomide (TMZ), and radiation (Rad) on gene expression of T98 glioma cell lines in monolayer and spheroid cell cultures., Results: Treatment with Rad and EMF significantly increased apoptosis-related gene expression compared to the control group in monolayers and spheroids (p<0.001). The expression of apoptotic-related genes in monolayers was higher than the similar spheroid groups (p<0.001). We found that treatment with TMZ and EMF could increase the gene expression of the autophagy cascade markers compared to the control group (p<0.001). Autophagy-related gene expression in spheroids was higher than in the similar monolayer group (p<0.001). We demonstrated that coadministration of EMF, TMZ, and Rad significantly reduced cell cycle and drug resistance gene expression in monolayers and spheroids (p<0.001) compared to the control group., Conclusion: The combinational use of TMZ, Rad and, EMF showed the highest antitumor activity by inducing apoptosis and autophagy signaling pathways and inhibiting cell cycle and drug resistance gene expression. Background: As the third most common malignancy of childhood, Neuroblastoma has a great propensity to metastasize to multiple organs. The most common site of metastasis is the bone and bone marrow. Concerning the central nervous system, neuroblastoma usually involves the calvarium and the external dural surface. The skull metastases may show different appearances, including: multiple lytic bone lesions, bone thickening, hair-on-end periosteal reaction, irregular suture widening and/or plaque like epidural deposits. Here we present a case of metastatic neuroblastoma, appearing as multiple multi-loculated cystic epidural masses with internal blood-fluid levels as a rare imaging manifestation of calvarial metastasis., Case Presentation: An 8-year-old boy with known history of autism, presented to the emergency department with a 3-month history of intermittent fever, malaise and myalgia and headache along with significant weight loss. Laboratory examination revealed elevated ESR and CRP and anemia. On Abdomino-Pelvic imaging a well-defined, 45*30*24 mm, solid-cystic mass was observed, replacing the normal left adrenal gland. On brain MRI, multiple multi-loculated cystic, lentiform masses were observed on the external surface of cerebral hemispheric dura. Multiple fluid-fluid levels were noted in the locules in some of which the dependent fluid was hyperintense on T1w and FLAIR and hypointense on T2w sequences, compatible with blood, representing blood-fluid level. The wall and septa of the masses, enhanced after contrast administration. Associated abnormal marrow signal and aggressive type periosteal reactions were identified in the overlying bone. All of the lesions had increased uptake in MIBG scan. Bone marrow biopsy revealed small round cells, diagnostic for neuroblastoma. The patient underwent chemotherapy treatment. All calvarial/epidural metastatic lesions resolved after chemotherapy and residual adrenal tumor was resected., Conclusion: Cystic epidural lesions, especially when associated with adjacent abnormal bone marrow signal, or periosteal reaction and containing blood-fluid level should raise the suspicion of a calvarial metastasis., (© 2022. Aims: Recently, the development of new strategies in the treatment and diagnosis of cancer cells such as thermo-radiation-sensitizer and theranostic agents have received a great deal of attention. In this work, folic acid-conjugated temozolomide-loaded SPION@PEG-PBA-PEG nanoparticles (TMZ-MNP-FA NPs) were proposed for use as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents and to enhance the cytotoxic effects of hyperthermia and radiotherapy., Main Methods: Nanoparticles were synthesized by the Nano-precipitation method and their characteristics were determined by dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). To evaluate the thermo-radio-sensitization effects of NPs, C6 cells were treated with nanoparticles for 24 h and then exposed to 6-MV X-ray radiation. After radiotherapy, the cells were subjected to an alternating magnetic field (AMF) hyperthermia. The therapeutic potential was assessed using clonogenic assay, ROS generation measurement, flow cytometry assay, and qRT-PCR analysis. Also, the diagnostic properties of the nanoparticles were assessed by MRI., Key Findings: MRI scanning indicated that nanoparticles accumulated in C6 cells could be tracked by T2-weighted MR imaging. Colony formation assay proved that TMZ-MNP-FA NPs enhanced the anti-proliferation effects of AMF by 1.94-fold compared to AMF alone (P < 0.0001). Moreover, these NPs improved the radiation effects with a dose enhancement factor of 1.65. All results showed that the combination of carrier-based chemotherapy with hyperthermia and radiotherapy caused a higher anticancer efficacy than single- or two-modality treatments., Significance: The nanoparticles advanced in this study can be proposed as the promising theranostic and thermo-radio-sensitizer platform for the diagnosis and tri-modal synergistic cancer therapy., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Background: Cholecystohepatic duct is a rare anomaly of the biliary system which involves drainage of bile into the gallbladder which may be associated with agenesis of the common hepatic duct or common bile duct., Case Presentation: A 2.5-month-old infant presented to our emergency department with icterus. He had a history of esophageal atresia and imperforate anus which had been treated surgically by thoracotomy, esophagostomy, gastrostomy and colostomy placement. Following imaging studies by ultrasound and MRCP, the diagnosis of common hepatic duct agenesis was made. Cholecystohepatic duct was present as the solitary drainage pathway of bile from the intrahepatic to extrahepatic biliary system., Conclusions: Cholecystohepatic ducts need a high index of suspicion to be diagnosed on preoperative hepatobiliary imaging. Purpose and Background: Post-traumatic olfactory dysfunction (PTOD), mostly caused by head injury, is thought to be associated with changes in the structure and function of the brain olfactory processing areas. Training and repeated exposure to odorants lead to enhanced olfactory capability. This study investigated the effects of a 16-weeks olfactory training (OT) on olfactory function and brain structure., Methods: Twenty-five patients with PTOD were randomly divided in three groups: (1) 9 control patients who did not receive any training, (2) 9 patients underwent classical OT by 4 fixed odors, and (3) 7 patients underwent modified OT coming across 4 sets of 4 different odors sequentially. Before and after the training period, all patients performed olfactory function tests and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Sniffin' Sticks test was used to assess olfactory function. MRI data were analyzed using voxel-based morphometry and surface-based morphometry., Results: Both trained groups showed a considerable recovery of olfactory function, especially in odor identification. MRI data analysis revealed that the classical OT leads to increases in cortical thickness/density of several brain regions, including the right superior and middle frontal gyrus, and bilateral cerebellums. In addition, the modified OT yielded a lower extent of cortical measures in the right orbital frontal cortex and right insular. Following modified OT, a positive correlation was observed between the odor identification and the right orbital frontal cortex., Conclusion: Both olfactory training methods can improve olfactory function and that the improvement is associated with changes in the structure of olfactory processing areas of the brain., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Masson SAS. Background: Deregulated PIN1 is associated with cancer development and progression. Herein, for the first time, we evaluate the roles that PIN1 in tumorigenic characteristics of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells., Methods: In this study, PIN1 expression was knocked down in SW-48 cells by synthetic small interfering RNA (siRNA). After confirming the knockdown of PIN1, cell viability, colony formation, apoptosis, autophagy, cancer stem cell (CSC)-related genes, CSC-related signaling pathways, cell migration, and 5-FU chemosensitivity were evaluated in vitro., Results: Transfection of PIN1 siRNA into SW-48 cells inhibited cancer cell proliferation, migration, and increased apoptosis and autophagy. Transfected SW-48 cells had lower properties of CSCs through the inhibition of β-catenin and Notch1 gene expression. Moreover, inhibition of PIN1 enhanced the inhibitory effect of 5-FU on SW-48 cell proliferation., Conclusion: Our results indicated that targeting of PIN1 serves as a promising therapeutic solution for the suppression of tumor progression processes in CRC., (© 2021.
