1. Combinatorial and Algebraic Mutations of Toric Fano 3-folds and Mass Deformations of 2d (0,2) Quiver Gauge Theories

Abstract

We argue that algebraic and combinatorial polytope mutations of Fano 3-folds can be identified with mass deformations of associated 2d (0,2) supersymmetric gauge theories realized by brane brick models. These are Type IIA brane configurations that realize a large family of 2d worldvolume theories on probe D1-branes at toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. We show that brane brick models that are related by mass deformations associated to algebraic and combinatorial polytope mutations of Fano 3-folds have mesonic moduli spaces with the same number of generators. We show that mesonic flavor charges of these generators form convex reflexive lattice polytopes that are dual to the toric diagrams of the Fano 3-folds. The generating function of mesonic gauge invariant operators, also known as the Hilbert series of the mesonic moduli space, appears to be identical for such brane brick models under a particular refinement originating from the U(1)_R charges in the brane brick model following the mass deformation., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 5 tables

2. Dirt's Hidden Defenders: Antibiotic Production in the Rhizosphere of Sage Hill

Abstract

The emergence of antibiotic-resistant diseases and increases in plant disease outbreaks, that threaten global food security, present major growing public health crises. Since most antibiotics originate from soil microorganisms, soil microbial communities offer promising reservoirs for discovering new compounds. This study explores antibiotic-producing rhizobacteria in Sage Hill's soil, a recently restored environment at UCLA. Biochemical and functional assays were used to characterize soil microbial communities from rhizosphere samples taken from Sage Hill. Using these methods, we identified antibiotic-producing bacteria, and likely Pseudomonas and Bacillus. These results underscore the importance of investigating soil microbial communities for novel antibiotic discovery and agricultural sustainability.

3. Hilbert Series of Bipartite Field Theories

Abstract

We study the algebraic structure of the mesonic moduli spaces of bipartite field theories by computing the Hilbert series. Bipartite field theories form a large family of 4d N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories that are defined by bipartite graphs on Riemann surfaces with boundaries. By calculating the Hilbert series, we are able to identify the generators and defining generator relations of the mesonic moduli spaces of these theories. Moreover, we show that certain bipartite field theories exhibit enhanced global symmetries which can be identified through the computation of the corresponding refined Hilbert series. Abstract

Chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) is a common neurological condition characterized by the accumulation of blood between the brain and the dura mater. This accumulation of blood can exert pressure on the brain, potentially leading to fatal outcomes. Treatment options for cSDH are limited to invasive surgery or non-invasive management. Traditionally, the midline shift, hand-measured by experts from an ideal sagittal plane, and the hematoma volume have been the primary metrics for quantifying and analyzing cSDH. However, these approaches do not quantify the local 3D brain deformation caused by cSDH. We propose a novel method using anatomy-aware unsupervised diffeomorphic pseudo-healthy synthesis to generate brain deformation fields. The deformation fields derived from this process are utilized to extract biomarkers that quantify the shift in the brain due to cSDH. We use CT scans of 121 patients for training and validation of our method and find that our metrics allow the identification of patients who require surgery. Our results indicate that automatically obtained brain deformation fields might contain prognostic value for personalized cSDH treatment. Abstract

In medical imaging, access to data is commonly limited due to patient privacy restrictions and the issue that it can be difficult to acquire enough data in the case of rare diseases.[1] The purpose of this investigation was to develop a reusable open-source synthetic image generation pipeline, the GAN Image Synthesis Tool (GIST), that is easy to use as well as easy to deploy. The pipeline helps to improve and standardize AI algorithms in the digital health space by generating high quality synthetic image data that is not linked to specific patients. Its image generation capabilities include the ability to generate imaging of pathologies or injuries with low incidence rates. This improvement of digital health AI algorithms could improve diagnostic accuracy, aid in patient care, decrease medicolegal claims, and ultimately decrease the overall cost of healthcare. The pipeline builds on existing Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) algorithms, and preprocessing and evaluation steps were included for completeness. For this work, we focused on ensuring the pipeline supports radiography, with a focus on synthetic knee and elbow x-ray images. In designing the pipeline, we evaluated the performance of current GAN architectures, studying the performance on available x-ray data. We show that the pipeline is capable of generating high quality and clinically relevant images based on a lay person's evaluation and the Fr\'echet Inception Distance (FID) metric.

6. Ef-QuantFace: Streamlined Face Recognition with Small Data and Low-Bit Precision

Abstract

In recent years, model quantization for face recognition has gained prominence. Traditionally, compressing models involved vast datasets like the 5.8 million-image MS1M dataset as well as extensive training times, raising the question of whether such data enormity is essential. This paper addresses this by introducing an efficiency-driven approach, fine-tuning the model with just up to 14,000 images, 440 times smaller than MS1M. We demonstrate that effective quantization is achievable with a smaller dataset, presenting a new paradigm. Moreover, we incorporate an evaluation-based metric loss and achieve an outstanding 96.15% accuracy on the IJB-C dataset, establishing a new state-of-the-art compressed model training for face recognition. The subsequent analysis delves into potential applications, emphasizing the transformative power of this approach. This paper advances model quantization by highlighting the efficiency and optimal results with small data and training time.

12. Pregnancy Outcomes After Laparoscopic Radiofrequency Ablation of Uterine Leiomyomas Compared With Myomectomy.

Abstract

To compare pregnancy outcomes after laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation and myomectomy.The ULTRA (Uterine Leiomyoma Treatment With Radiofrequency Ablation) study is an ongoing multicenter prospective cohort study with longitudinal follow-up up to 5 years comparing outcomes of radiofrequency ablation with myomectomy in premenopausal women older than age 21 years with symptomatic uterine leiomyomas. Participants were queried every 6 months after surgery to assess the incidence of pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes.Among 539 women enrolled in ULTRA, a total of 37 participants (mean age at first pregnancy 35.0±4.7 years) conceived 43 times as of March 2023 (22 radiofrequency ablation, 21 myomectomy). The average length of follow-up time after all procedures was 2.5±1.0 years. The baseline miscarriage rate in the study population was 33.3%. In participants who underwent radiofrequency ablation, 9 of 22 pregnancies (40.9%, 95% CI, 20.3-61.5%) ended in first-trimester miscarriage, 11 resulted in live births (50.0%, 95% CI, 29.1-70.9%), one resulted fetal death at 30 weeks of gestation, and one resulted in uterine rupture during miscarriage treatment with misoprostol 10 weeks after radiofrequency ablation. Among the live births in the radiofrequency ablation group, 45.5% were by vaginal delivery. In the myomectomy group, 9 of 21 pregnancies (42.9%, 95% CI, 21.7-64.0%) ended in first-trimester miscarriage and 12 resulted in live births (57.1%, 95% CI, 36.0-78.3%). There were no significant differences in the likelihood of live birth or miscarriage between the study groups.Full-term pregnancy and vaginal delivery are achievable after radiofrequency ablation of leiomyomas. However, in this interim analysis, the miscarriage rate in both radiofrequency ablation and myomectomy groups was higher than expected for women in this age group. Long-term data collection in the ongoing ULTRA study aims to further understand pregnancy outcomes after radiofrequency ablation compared with myomectomy.ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT0210094.

Abstract

The glycosylation of IgG plays a critical role during human severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, activating immune cells and inducing cytokine production. However, the role of IgM N-glycosylation has not been studied during human acute viral infection. The analysis of IgM N-glycosylation from healthy controls and hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients reveals increased high-mannose and sialylation that correlates with COVID-19 severity. These trends are confirmed within SARS-CoV-2-specific immunoglobulin N-glycan profiles. Moreover, the degree of total IgM mannosylation and sialylation correlate significantly with markers of disease severity. We link the changes of IgM N-glycosylation with the expression of Golgi glycosyltransferases. Lastly, we observe antigen-specific IgM antibody-dependent complement deposition is elevated in severe COVID-19 patients and modulated by exoglycosidase digestion. Taken together, this work links the IgM N-glycosylation with COVID-19 severity and highlights the need to understand IgM glycosylation and downstream immune function during human disease.

Abstract

Post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC) is a significant public health concern. We describe Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs) on 590 participants prospectively assessed from hospital admission for COVID-19 through one year after discharge. Modeling identified 4 PRO clusters based on reported deficits (minimal, physical, mental/cognitive, and multidomain), supporting heterogenous clinical presentations in PASC, with sub-phenotypes associated with female sex and distinctive comorbidities. During the acute phase of disease, a higher respiratory SARS-CoV-2 viral burden and lower Receptor Binding Domain and Spike antibody titers were associated with both the physical predominant and the multidomain deficit clusters. A lower frequency of circulating B lymphocytes by mass cytometry (CyTOF) was observed in the multidomain deficit cluster. Circulating fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) was significantly elevated in the mental/cognitive predominant and the multidomain clusters. Future efforts to link PASC to acute anti-viral host responses may help to better target treatment and prevention of PASC.

15. Boosting Prompt-Based Self-Training With Mapping-Free Automatic Verbalizer for Multi-Class Classification

Abstract

Recently, prompt-based fine-tuning has garnered considerable interest as a core technique for few-shot text classification task. This approach reformulates the fine-tuning objective to align with the Masked Language Modeling (MLM) objective. Leveraging unlabeled data, prompt-based self-training has shown greater effectiveness in binary and three-class classification. However, prompt-based self-training for multi-class classification has not been adequately investigated, despite its significant applicability to real-world scenarios. Moreover, extending current methods to multi-class classification suffers from the verbalizer that extracts the predicted value of manually pre-defined single label word for each class from MLM predictions. Consequently, we introduce a novel, efficient verbalizer structure, named Mapping-free Automatic Verbalizer (MAV). Comprising two fully connected layers, MAV serves as a trainable verbalizer that automatically extracts the requisite word features for classification by capitalizing on all available information from MLM predictions. 16. Predicting Food Waste Reduction Behavior among Students in Higher Education Institutions

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to determine and analyze the predictors of food waste reduction intention and behavior among higher education institutions (HEIs) using an extended version of the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Design/methodology/approach: This study empirically tested an extended TPB model through regression analyses using data obtained through an online survey. Findings: Attitude toward food waste reduction, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control and food waste knowledge predicted intention to reduce food waste. Furthermore, the intention to reduce food waste predicted food waste reduction behavior. Research limitations/implications: The results imply that extending the TPB by adding food waste knowledge significantly predicted food waste reduction intention and behavior. Practical implications: The study identified factors that predict food waste reduction behavior and suggested ways to influence Filipino students in HEIs to reduce food waste. Originality/value: The findings support the inclusion of food waste knowledge to the TPB in predicting food waste reduction intention and behavior among students in HEIs.

17. Are We on an Equal Footing? Accepting Teachers as Equal Learning Partners to Effectively Engage Teachers in Coaching

Abstract

This exploratory case study employed deductive thematic analysis of coaching interactions of four coach-teacher dyads in primary school settings to explore the instructional coaches' use of the Partnership Learning principle of equality. Evidence of coaches' procedural knowledge (i.e. what coaches say and do) in relation to the principle of equality were collected through observations of the coach-teacher face-to-face coaching conferences and semi-structured interviews conducted with coaches and teachers, respectively. Findings revealed that the partnership learning principle of equality was practiced as rooted in the coaches' practices through: (a) desire to establish rapport; and (b) coaching without hierarchy. Conversely, exceptions in the practice of the equality principle were found to be manifested in the coaching interactions. This paper holds several implications that encourages coaching practitioners to reflect on their partnership with teachers and to embrace in procedural knowledge that nurtures equal and healthy coach-teacher partnership to allow teacher professional development to transpire.

22. From Soma to Synapse: Imaging Age-Related Rod Photoreceptor Changes in the Mouse with Visible Light OCT

Abstract

PurposeAlthough the outer nuclear layer (ONL) and outer plexiform layer (OPL) each exhibit a complex internal organization, near-infrared OCT depicts both as monolithic bands. Here, using visible light OCT in the C57BL/6J mouse retina, sublaminar age-related changes in photoreceptor features were imaged and interpreted. These features were (1) oscillations in reflectivity, or striations, in the ONL and (2) a moderately reflective subband in the OPL.DesignCross-sectional study.ParticipantsPigmented mice (C57BL/6J, n = 14).MethodsA 1.0-μm axial resolution visible light spectral/Fourier domain OCT system was used for in vivo retinal imaging. Light and electron microscopy were performed ex vivo. Linear mixed effects models or regression were employed for statistical analysis.Main outcome measuresComparison of OCT subbands with corresponding histological features, as well as quantification of subband thickness and reflectivity.ResultsCorresponding histological comparisons confirm that striations in the ONL arise from the rowlike arrangement of photoreceptor nuclei and reveal that the moderately reflective OPL subband arises from rod spherules. Compression of outer ONL striations with age suggests changes in soma organization. Thinning of the moderately reflective OPL subband with age supports a reduction of synapses in the OPL. Critically, the ONL somas are tightly correlated with the purported spherule layer but not with the rest of the OPL.ConclusionsVisible light OCT imaging of the mouse OPL resolves postsynaptic and synaptic differences. Abstract

Coronary artery calcification (CAC), a measure of subclinical atherosclerosis, predicts future symptomatic coronary artery disease (CAD). Identifying genetic risk factors for CAC may point to new therapeutic avenues for prevention. Currently, there are only four known risk loci for CAC identified from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in the general population. Here we conducted the largest multi-ancestry GWAS meta-analysis of CAC to date, which comprised 26,909 individuals of European ancestry and 8,867 individuals of African ancestry. We identified 11 independent risk loci, of which eight were new for CAC and five had not been reported for CAD. These new CAC loci are related to bone mineralization, phosphate catabolism and hormone metabolic pathways. Several new loci harbor candidate causal genes supported by multiple lines of functional evidence and are regulators of smooth muscle cell-mediated calcification ex vivo and in vitro. Together, these findings help refine the genetic architecture of CAC and extend our understanding of the biological and potential druggable pathways underlying CAC.

Abstract We study the algebraic structure of the mesonic moduli spaces of bipartite field theories by computing the Hilbert series. Bipartite field theories form a large family of 4d N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 1 supersymmetric gauge theories that are defined by bipartite graphs on Riemann surfaces with boundaries. By calculating the Hilbert series, we are able to identify the generators and defining generator relations of the mesonic moduli spaces of these theories. Moreover, we show that certain bipartite field theories exhibit enhanced global symmetries which can be identified through the computation of the corresponding refined Hilbert series. As part of our study, we introduce two one-parameter families of bipartite field theories defined on cylinders whose mesonic moduli spaces are all complete intersection toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds.

Abstract EBUS-guided transbronchial mediastinal cryobiopsy (TBMC) has emerged as a promising biopsy tool for diagnosing hilar and mediastinal pathologies. However, several fundamental technical aspects of TBMC remain unexplored. This study aims to determine the optimal number of cryo-passes and freezing time of the ultrathin cryoprobe in EBUS-TBMC concerning specimen size and procedural diagnostic yield. We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients with mediastinal and hilar lesions who underwent EBUS-TBMC between January 2021 and April 2023 across three hospitals in Malaysia. Abstract

Abstract Rapid urbanization will cause various land use changes and the vast occupation of green spaces, a critical factor in the deterioration of biodiversity in urbanized areas. Some species of wildlife are endangered due to habitat shrunk and fragmentation. However, Malaysia's current biodiversity protection range is still limited. The Ecological Network (EN) refers to a framework of ecological components, which can be obtained by geographical and technical approaches to support more ecological diversity ranges. Furthermore, little research has been found on EN in Malaysia and the impact of land use change on EN. Therefore, the Selangor region is selected as the study area. This paper quantifies land use change and measures the extent of land use change to obtain the EN’s change. The result has shown that forestland has decreased, explored by people for housing and agriculture from 2000 to 2020. The EN has a trend of fragmentation. Overall, this study's results imply that the land use change led to EN's worsened performance from 2000 to 2020 in the study area. This paper hopes that this research could help supply information on conserving biodiversity in future development and urban sustainable planning in Malaysia.

Abstract

Abstract Background Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is accepted as standard care for individuals with COPD. We conducted an international, multi-centred randomized controlled trial (RCT) to determine if adding balance training to PR would reduce the incidence of falls in people with COPD. While there have been many trials investigating the effectiveness of PR, few have involved international collaboration. Successful execution of rehabilitation trials requires a significant investment of time, staffing, and resources. With the recent completion of the Balance Training for Fall Reduction in COPD RCT, we report on the design, implementation, and execution of our trial using project management phases. We also highlight our lessons learned for consideration in future multi-centre rehabilitation trials. Methods This was a retrospective review of the planning, preparation, timelines, and personnel training involved in the execution of this study using four of the five project management phases described by Farrell et al. in 2010: (1) initiation, (2) planning, (3) execution, and (4) monitoring and controlling. We report descriptive statistics as percentages and counts and summarize our lessons learned. Results Ten outpatient PR programs in three continents participated. Thirty-one personnel worked on the trial across all sites. Enrolment began in January 2017 and was suspended in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Approximately 1275 patients were screened, 455 (36%) were eligible, 258 (57%) consented, 243 (53%) participated, and 130 (61%) completed the 12-month follow-up assessment. Lessons learned through our experience included (1) ensuring awareness of funder policies and considering the impact on collaborating sites; (2) preparing for the possibility of human resource and program disruptions; (3) anticipating site dropout and having a contingency plan in place; (4) planning and monitoring process measure data before, during, and after trial initiation; (5) ensuring frequent and consistent communication with and between collaborating sites; (6) maximizing features of database platform to ensure data set completeness and controlled data access; and (7) identifying strategies for increasing patient engagement in a high-demand study. Conclusions We identify seven lessons learned through our experience conducting an international, multicentre rehabilitation-based RCT. These lessons can provide guidance to other trialists conducting studies with similar logistics and may assist with future trial planning and implementation.

28. The Students Alternative Schools Serve. An Essay for the Learning Curve

Abstract

Alternative schools have often been excluded from education policies and research. Yet they are a relatively common education intervention for students deemed unsuccessful in their traditional schools. Increasingly, the limited accountability oversight of the alternative school sector has led to allegations of students being pushed out of mainstream schools to alternative schools to avoid accountability. To a large extent, understanding the students who attend alternative schools equates to understanding the students who are missing from traditional schools and thus current school accountability systems. This analysis of national data shows that alternative schools serve disproportionately high numbers of Black and Hispanic students, special education students, English learners, and male students, making those enrolled in alternative schools a particularly important population of students to consider in the pursuit of educational equity, but these students are commonly excluded from broader educational policies and research.

Background: The response of Canada's research community to the COVID-19 pandemic provides a unique opportunity to examine the country's clinical health research ecosystem. We sought to describe patterns of enrolment across Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)-funded studies on COVID-19. Methods: We identified COVID-19 studies funded by the CIHR and that enrolled participants from Canadian acute care hospitals between January 2020 and April 2023. We collected information on study- and site-level variables from study leads, site investigators, and public domain sources. We described and evaluated factors associated with cumulative enrolment. Results: We obtained information for 23 out of 26 (88%) eligible CIHR-funded studies (16 randomized controlled trials [RCTs] and 7 cohort studies). The 23 studies were managed by 12 Canadian and 3 international coordinating centres. Of 419 Canadian hospitals, 97 (23%) enrolled a total of 28 973 participants--3876 in RCTs across 78 hospitals (median cumulative enrolment per hospital 30, interquartile range [IQR] 10-61), and 25 097 in cohort studies across 62 hospitals (median cumulative enrolment per hospital 158, IQR 6-348). Of 78 hospitals recruiting participants in RCTs, 13 (17%) enrolled 50% of all RCT participants, whereas 6 of 62 hospitals (9.7%) recruited 54% of participants in cohort studies. Interpretation: A minority of Canadian hospitals enrolled the majority of participants in CIHR-funded studies on COVID-19. We systematically study the master space of brane brick models that represent a large class of 2d (0,2) quiver gauge theories. These 2d (0,2) theories are worldvolume theories of D1-branes that probe singular toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. The master space is the freely generated space of chiral fields subject to the J- and E-terms and the non-abelian part of the gauge symmetry. We investigate several properties of the master space for abelian brane brick models with U(1) gauge groups. For example, we calculate the Hilbert series, which allows us by using the plethystic programme to identify the generators and defining relations of the master space. Abstract

As the e-commerce market continues to expand and online transactions proliferate, customer reviews have emerged as a critical element in shaping the purchasing decisions of prospective buyers. Previous studies have endeavored to identify key aspects of customer reviews through the development of sentiment analysis models and topic models. However, extracting specific dissatisfaction factors remains a challenging task. In this study, we delineate the pain point detection problem and propose Painsight, an unsupervised framework for automatically extracting distinct dissatisfaction factors from customer reviews without relying on ground truth labels. Painsight employs pre-trained language models to construct sentiment analysis and topic models, leveraging attribution scores derived from model gradients to extract dissatisfaction factors. Upon application of the proposed methodology to customer review data spanning five product categories, we successfully identified and categorized dissatisfaction factors within each group, as well as isolated factors for each type. Abstract

Molecular breast imaging (MBI) is an adjunctive screening tool that can be helpful in evaluating women with dense breasts or in high-risk patients. We present the case of a 43-year-old female who had markedly asymmetric uptake in one of her breasts on MBI study. Further evaluation with diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound did not demonstrate any suspicious findings in the affected breast. Discussion with the patient and additional clinical history revealed that the patient was exclusively breastfeeding from that side, accounting for the unilateral MBI findings.
