Abstract

Computed tomography imaging is well accepted for its imaging speed, image contrast & resolution and cost. Thus it has wide use in detection and diagnosis of brain diseases. But unfortunately reported works on CT segmentation is not very significant. In this paper, a robust automatic segmentation system is presented which is capable of segment complete brain matter from CT slices, without any lose in information. The proposed method is simple, fast, accurate and completely automatic. It can handle multislice CT scan in single run. From a given multislice CT dataset, one slice is selected automatically to form masks for segmentation. Two types of masks are created to handle nasal slices in a better way. Masks are created from selected reference slice using automatic seed point selection and region growing technique. One mask is designed for brain matter and another includes the skull of the reference slice. This second mask is used as global reference mask for all slices whereas the brain matter mask is implemented on only adjacent slices and continuously modified for better segmentation. Slices in given dataset are divided into two batches, before reference slice and after reference slice. Each batch segmented separately. Successive propagation of brain matter mask has demonstrated very high potential in reported segmentation. Presented result shows highest sensitivity and more than 96% accuracy in all cases. Resulted segmented images can be used for any brain disease diagnosis or further image analysis.

Abstract

We sought to assess the feasibility of computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) on a 128-slice, dual source scanner in children with acute and convalescent phase Kawasaki disease (KD).A prospective study of 49 children with KD (12 at presentation and 37 in the convalescent phase) was conducted between November 2013 and April 2015. CTCA was performed with either prospective (n = 37) or retrospective (n = 12) electrocardiographic gating. A radiologist blinded to clinical profile and echocardiogram evaluated each scan.Median age (36 boys and 13 girls) was 7 years. Median dose-length product value and median effective CT radiation dose was 32mGycm (interquartile range [IQR]: 21-74) and 0.54 miliSieverts (mSv) (IQR: 0.77-3.2) for all scans, and 27mGycm (IQR: 18.5-33.75) and 0.48mSv (IQR: 0.18-1.17) for prospectively triggered scans (n = 37). Fourteen subjects (30 coronary segments) showed abnormalities by CTCA including aneurysms (n = 27) and stenoses (n = 3). In the acute phase (n = 12), aneurysms were detected in 5 children (18 segments).CTCA allows comprehensive evaluation of coronary arteries in children with KD.

47. Differential geometry-based techniques for characterization of boundary roughness of pulmonary nodules in CT images

Abstract

Boundary roughness of a pulmonary nodule is an important indication of its malignancy. The irregularity of the shape of a nodule is represented in terms of a few diagnostic characteristics such as spiculation, lobulation, and sphericity. Quantitative characterization of these diagnostic characteristics is essential for designing a content-based image retrieval system and computer-aided system for diagnosis of lung cancer. This paper presents differential geometry-based techniques for computation of spiculation, lobulation, and sphericity using the binary mask of the segmented nodule. These shape features are computed in 3D considering complete nodule. The performance of the proposed and competing methods is evaluated in terms of the precision, mean similarity, and normalized discounted cumulative gain on 891 nodules of Lung Image Database Consortium and Image Database Resource Initiative. The proposed methods are comparable to or better than gold standard technique. The reproducibility of proposed feature extraction techniques is evaluated using RIDER coffee break data set. The mean and standard deviation of the percent change of spiculation, lobulation, and sphericity are $$1.66\pm 2.36$$ 1.66±2.36 , $$10.57\pm 11.63$$ 10.57±11.63 , and $$6.27\pm 7.99$$ 6.27±7.99 %, respectively. The prior works of computation of spiculation, lobulation, and sphericity require a set of four ground truths from radiologists and, hence, can not be used in practice. The proposed methods do not require ground truth information of nodules from radiologists, and hence, it can be used in real-life computer-aided diagnosis system for lung cancer.
