OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to find cephalometric association between various shapes of soft palate with different growth pattern and age groups in skeletal class I, II and III malocclusion. METHODOLOGY: The pretreatment lateral cephalograms of 382 patients was collected from the department of Orthodontics, Liaquat College of Medicine & Dentistry, Karachi. The study included 96 males and 286 females between the ages of 11 to 30 years. All the patients were divided according to skeletal classification of malocclusion. The type of skeletal malocclusion, growth pattern and the morphological variations of soft palate were assessed. The differences in the proportion of soft palate morphology among skeletal malocclusion and growth pattern were calculated. Variation of the soft palate morphology among the genders and different age groups were also determined. RESULTS: Subjects with Type 1 "leaf-shaped" soft palates were more prevalent (43.2%) whereas, The Type 4 "Straight-line" soft palate was least common (2.9%). Type 1 "leaf-shaped" soft palate was the most common in all skeletal malocclusion classes, growth pattern types and both genders. CONCLUSION: This study found significant association between soft palate morphology with type of skeletal malocclusion and gender. BACKGROUND: Proshthodontic intervention has become a necessity, since loss of teeth leads to degeneracy of oral function, phonetics and esthetics. A trend in increase of the life expectancy of the elderly also demands an increase in the prosthodontic restorations. The aim of the current study was to assess complications rates among complete denture wearers in a teaching hospital of Karachi. STUDY DESIGN: A cross sectional analytical study was conducted at the Department of Prosthodontics, Dr. Ishrat ul Ebad Khan Institute of Oral Health Sciences (DIKIOHS), Karachi, Pakistan from March 2014 to May 2014. METHODOLOGY: A total of 65 patients were selected who had worn heat cured acrylic complete dentures fabricated by post graduates and undergraduates. Variables such as age gender and satisfaction were recorded on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Various parameters that have potential effects on patient satisfaction and denture complication were assessed using SPSS version 18. Descriptive statistics like percentage, mean and median were used. Quantitative data were tested with student t-test to find the relation between different variables. RESULTS: The results obtained were as follows; Males were greater in number i.e. 52.3% as compared to females who were 47.6% out of total number of patients. The complications seen were: Ulcer development: 44.6%, Fractures in the denture base: 27.6%, Loss of retention: 84.6%, Loss of teeth: 30.7%, Denture-related stomatitis: 7.6%. Patient satisfaction according to the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was found to be Esthetics: 72.5, Chewing Ability: 50 and Phonetics: 90. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of the current study, Loss of retention in complete dentures was found to be the most prevalent complication amongst all. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: After the loss of natural teeth, replacement of teeth by prosthodontic services becomes a vital part in the modern day living. They provide effective mastication and esthetics. To make it more proficient both biologically and functionally, they are accommodated in particular geometric manner referred to as a dental arch form. The objective of this study is to compare the distance between the most prominent part of labial surface of maxillary central incisors with the posterior limit of the incisive papilla in various arch forms. STUDY DESIGN: Cross sectional In-vitro experimental study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY : Department of Prosthodontics, Dr. Ishrat ul Ebad Khan Institute of Oral Health Sciences, DUHS, Karachi, Pakistan from March 2012 to August 2012. METHODOLOGY: 203 College students from third and final years were selected with symmetric faces and all teeth present except third molars. Subjects with malformed teeth, periodontal problems, orthodontic treatment or restorations on the labial tooth surfaces were excluded. After sample selection, impressions were made for upper and lower arches and the resultant casts were standardized for each sample. Arch forms were assessed by their morphological description. Measurements were recorded for incisive papilla (IP) and maxillary central incisor (CI) distance for papillo-incisal distance (PID) with a modified digital vernier caliper with the casts placed on a flat horizontal surface. The fixed jaw blade of the vernier caliper was extended 10 mm from the original for effective measurements. RESULTS: The mean PID was 11.06 mm ± 1.46. Among the subjects were 90.6% had ovoid, 3.9% had squarish and 5.4% had tapering arch forms. Mean PID for Ovoid arches were found to be 11.04mm, Tapering 10.84mm and Squarish 12.02mm. CONCLUSION: The suggested mean PID for placing prosthetic central incisors is 11.06mm. There is a higher presentation of ovoid arch forms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Purpose: To evaluate the frequency and outcome of haemorrhagic transformation (HT) after ischaemic stroke in patients treated with non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs)., Methods: Patients with stroke on treatment with a NOAC were prospectively enrolled in this multicentre observational study between February 2012 and 2015. Brain imaging at admission and follow-up imaging until day 7 were reviewed for HT. Functional outcome was assessed by the modified Rankin scale (mRS) before the index event, at discharge, and at 3-months., Results: 231 patients without recanalisation therapy (no-RT), and 32 patients with RT were eligible for analysis. Any HT was present at admission in 9/231 no-RT patients (3.9%, 95% CI 2.0 to 7.3) and in none of the patients with RT. In patients with follow-up imaging (no-RT, n=129, and RT, n=32), HT was present in 14.0% (no-RT; 95% CI, 8.9 to 21.1), and 40.6% (RT, 95% CI, 25.5 to 57.8), respectively. After adjustment for stroke severity, this difference between the no-RT and RT groups became non-significant. Symptomatic ICH was observed in 1 patient per group. HT was not associated with unfavourable outcome (mRS 3-6) at 3-months in multivariable analysis. Resumption of OAC after stroke was delayed in patients with HT compared to those without (15 d [IQR, 5-26] vs. 1 d [0-4], P <0.001)., Conclusions: The frequency and severity of HT after stroke on NOAC appears similar to previous reports for vitamin K antagonists and no anticoagulation.
