Abstract

Purpose: Math Braille is a difficult subject to teach online to students with visual impairment. Students with visual impairment are also supposed to have mastery of math braille to accomplish their academic goals. Design/Methodology/Approach: This study was based on a qualitative approach. This study's population consisted of all braille math teachers from the school level in Lahore. Data from 15 respondents including braille math teachers (N= 15) of different grades were taken as a sample by using the purposive sampling technique. The instrument of this study was an interview protocol for teachers. The data was collected through interviews. Qualitative data were analyzed through coding & thematic analysis. Findings: The findings of the study revealed that there are many visually impaired students who have difficulty in applying braille math rules. It was also found that teachers experienced many problems while teaching braille math to students with visual impairments through online mode. Additionally, an assistive device should be used, and the availability at the school level should be ensured & challenges and innovations for instructing braille math in online mode were also part of the findings. Implications/Originality/Value: So it is concluded that teacher training and conceptual learning of braille math for students with visual impairment in online educational setting that must be provided for better teaching & learning process.

Abstract

AbstractThe time-averaged shear wave velocity of top 30 m (VS30) is the most commonly used parameter to classify a site and evaluate its amplification characteristics for the seismic design. The in-situ seismic tests must be performed up to a depth of 30 m for obtaining the shear wave velocity (VS) profiles to estimate VS30. It is intimated that, in most of the cases, the measured VSprofile does not extend up to 30 m due to numerous reasons including limitation of testing techniques and unfavorable field conditions. Since, the measurements of VS30are unavailable for the majority of Pakistan and the world, the local geology and topographic slope or its combination are used to estimate VS30. However, there is no field-based validation of the estimated VS30is performed in Islamabad–Rawalpindi region, the proxy-based estimation may lead to unrealistic results. To accommodate this, region specific extrapolation methods are developed. This study develops an empirical data-driven function of VS30from shallow VSprofiles by correlating VS30with the time-averaged VSto depths less than 30 m. In this regard, 85 VSprofiles are used from Rawalpindi-Islamabad region. A comparative analysis of the proposed procedure is carried out with the published methods. It is revealed that VS30predicted by the proposed function results in close matches with the data measured in the western United States. In addition, the results indicate that the local geology and topographic slope proxies may not be acceptable for usage in the region due to their greater uncertainty. Finally, a procedure for extrapolating the VSprofile from available shallow depth measurements up to 30 m is proposed.

Abstract

We use the unique nature of the director and officer liability protection law applicable to Nevada incorporated firms to study how liability protection is related to corporate tax avoidance. We find that firms incorporated in Nevada avoid 32% more federal corporate tax as a fraction of total assets than firms incorporated in Delaware, and 40% more than firms incorporated in other states. Nevada‐incorporated firms have a 15% lower cash effective tax rate and an 8% lower GAAP ETR. The results are robust to various specifications including instrumental variable and matching approaches. Greater tax avoidance is also associated with lower payouts to shareholders for Nevada‐incorporated firms. The findings are consistent with theories about the complementarity of managerial diversion and tax avoidance for firms with poor monitoring, and they demonstrate how increases in liability protection lead to the unintended consequence of greater firm tax avoidance.
