Abstract

This research paper introduces a novel word-level Optical Character Recognition (OCR) model specifically designed for digital Urdu text, leveraging transformer-based architectures and attention mechanisms to address the distinct challenges of Urdu script recognition, including its diverse text styles, fonts, and variations. The model employs a permuted autoregressive sequence (PARSeq) architecture, which enhances its performance by enabling context-aware inference and iterative refinement through the training of multiple token permutations. This method allows the model to adeptly manage character reordering and overlapping characters, commonly encountered in Urdu script. Trained on a dataset comprising approximately 160,000 Urdu text images, the model demonstrates a high level of accuracy in capturing the intricacies of Urdu script, achieving a CER of 0.178. Despite ongoing challenges in handling certain text variations, the model exhibits superior accuracy and effectiveness in practical applications. Future work will focus on refining the model through advanced data augmentation techniques and the integration of context-aware language models to further enhance its performance and robustness in Urdu text recognition.

26. Rock Wettability and Its Implication for Caprock Integrity in CO2–Brine Systems: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract

Carbon geo-sequestration (CGS) is considered a mitigation technology for removing harmful CO2accumulations from the environment contributing toward a low-carbon future. One of the key concerns with CGS in deep geological formations is to prevent CO2leakage to the environment requiring long-term integrity of caprock (seal rock), which is affected by its wettability. This state-of-the-art review explores the key parameters that affect seal rock wettability in shale–CO2–brine systems, such as the pressure, temperature, brine salinity, and CO2-aging time. The caprock sealing efficiency may also be affected by the presence of common shale minerals (i.e., mica, illite, kaolinite, and montmorillonite), which adversely affect wettability. The review indicates that increased pressure generally enhances CO2-wetness (i.e., increases contact angle) across different minerals, with shale showing the most pronounced shifts. On the other hand, an increase in the temperature tends to reduce CO2-wetness (i.e., decreases contact angle, making it more water-wet), particularly for shale. However, the effect of higher salinity on the wettability of shale had no clear trend, either increasing, decreasing, or having no effect, depending upon the mineral composition. The long-term exposure (aging) of shale in a CO2-rich environment changed the wettability from water-wet to CO2-wet, which would reduce the caprock sealing capacity. Additionally, this review critically analyzes the published literature, highlighting the discrepancies and pointing out the areas where further research is needed. Moreover, the use of nanoparticles and surfactants alone or in a mixture was shown to increase the rock sealing capacity due to alteration in its wettability toward a more water-wet state. The effect of these ancillary materials is synergistic in enhancing caprock sealing integrity. This review also highlights the significance of caprock wettability for structural trapping integrity and, thus, CO2containment security.

Abstract

In this work, tungsten oxide (WO3) thin films are grown on FTO glass using a facile spin coating method and an ink composed of WO3 nanoparticles synthesized under varying concentrations of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant. The influence of variation of the CTAB concentration on the quality and electrochemical performance of the prepared WO3 thin films is investigated. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic analysis confirm that the thin film prepared with a CTAB/Na2WO4·2H2O molar ratio of 2.451 exhibits significantly enhanced electrochemical performance, demonstrating fast reaction kinetics for Li+ ions (diffusion coefficient = 1.08 × 10−9 cm2 s−1) compared to the pristine WO3 thin film (diffusion coefficient = 1.42 × 10−10 cm2 s−1) lacking any CTAB addition. These improved electrochemical characteristics of modified WO3 thin films are attributed to the increased porosity and a higher electroactive surface area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
