2. Critical Factors Influencing MOOCs Retention: The Mediating Role of Information Technology

Abstract

In the current digital era, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are considered as an educational revolution specifically in the current situation of COVID-19. Although students from all over the globe register for MOOCs, only a small proportion of participants complete the online courses. MOOCs at present encounter the problem of low retention rates, thus providing numerous research gaps. This paper investigates the impact of critical factors such as the instructor's role, course relevancy, learning outcomes on MOOCs retention. This study also analyzes the mediating role of IT (Social Media) between critical factors and MOOCs retention and provides feasible solutions for the improvement of MOOCs retention rates. Data were collected from Pakistani participants who attended, registered, or completed any MOOC. The findings of this study indicate that critical factors such as the instructor's role, course relevancy, learning outcomes have a positive impact on MOOC participants' retention. The results also confirm the important mediating role of IT (Social Media). The universities and the instructors who offer MOOCs should consider these critical factors when offering an online course. These critical factors can enhance MOOCs participants' retention leading them to take the courses until certification.

12. HyperProv: Decentralized Resilient Data Provenance at the Edge with Blockchains

Abstract

Data provenance and lineage are critical for ensuring integrity and reproducibility of information in research and application. This is particularly challenging for distributed scenarios, where data may be originating from decentralized sources without any central control by a single trusted entity. We present HyperProv, a general framework for data provenance based on the permissioned blockchain Hyperledger Fabric (HLF), and to the best of our knowledge, the first system that is ported to ARM based devices such as Raspberry Pi (RPi). HyperProv tracks the metadata, operation history and data lineage through a set of built-in queries using smart contracts, enabling lightweight retrieval of provenance data. HyperProv provides convenient integration through a NodeJS client library, and also includes off-chain storage through the SSH file system. We evaluate HyperProv's performance, throughput, resource consumption, and energy efficiency on x86-64 machines, as well as on RPi devices for IoT use cases at the edge.

Abstract

Modern heterogeneous computing architectures, which couple multi-core CPUs with discrete many-core GPUs (or other specialized hardware accelerators), enable unprecedented peak performance and energy efficiency levels. Unfortunately, though, developing applications that can take full advantage of the potential of heterogeneous systems is a notoriously hard task. This work takes a step towards reducing the complexity of programming heterogeneous systems by introducing the abstraction of Heterogeneous Transactional Memory (HeTM). HeTM provides programmers with the illusion of a single memory region, shared among the CPUs and the (discrete) GPU(s) of a heterogeneous system, with support for atomic transactions. Besides introducing the abstract semantics and programming model of HeTM, we present the design and evaluation of a concrete implementation of the proposed abstraction, which we named Speculative HeTM (SHeTM). SHeTM makes use of a novel design that leverages on speculative techniques and aims at hiding the inherently large communication latency between CPUs and discrete GPUs and at minimizing inter-device synchronization overhead. SHeTM is based on a modular and extensible design that allows for easily integrating alternative TM implementations on the CPU's and GPU's sides, which allows the flexibility to adopt, on either side, the TM implementation (e.g., in hardware or software) that best fits the applications' workload and the architectural characteristics of the processing unit. Abstract

In this study, an alternative approach was applied for the characterization of the subsurface geological conditions to estimate the hydrological parameters in the absence of subsurface soil data. The study revealed that the hydrological parameters, estimated from the Transient Electromagnetic (TEM) and Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), were significantly correlated with in situ data. Overall estimated infiltration rate (below 20 inches/h) predicted fine-grained soil was also associated with in situ data. A high correlation among the bulk electrical resistivity, porosity, and the resistivity of the pore fluid thereby confirmed the relevance of Archie’s law used in this study. Furthermore, results showed that both TEM and ERT are vital tools for hydrological parameter estimation.

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic validity of the GeneXpert for quick diagnosis of TB and recognition of Rifampin resistance in Ziehl–Neelsen smear-negative Broncho-alveolar lavage and sputum specimens obtained from suspected TB patients, keeping LJ culture as “Gold Standard”. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted at Fatima Jinnah General and Chest Hospital (FJGCH), Quetta from January 2018 to December 2018. Materials and Methods: One hundred ZN-smear negative pulmonary specimens (63 BAL and 37 sputum) were collected from suspected TB patients (34% males and 66% females; mean age 52.8±18) visiting FJGCH, Quetta. The isolates were processed for fluorescent microscopy, LJ culture and GeneXpert according to standard protocol. Efficacy of these diagnostic tests for the detection of MTB was evaluated comparatively. Results: Out of 100 ZN smear-negative specimens; MTB was detected by FM in 18 (18%) samples while LJ culture detected MTB in 59 (59%) and GeneXpert in 55 (55%) samples. Conclusion: We concluded that GeneXpert is an innovative assay for prompt detection of MTB in smearnegative cases having higher sensitivity and specificity with additional advantage of drug resistance detection and turnaround time of two hours. The assay facilitates early diagnosis and appropriate management of TB to minimize morbidity and mortality.

29. A Distributed Auctioneer for Resource Allocation in Decentralized Systems

Abstract

In decentralized systems, nodes often need to coordinate to access shared resources in a fair manner. One approach to perform such arbitration is to rely on auction mechanisms. Although there is an extensive literature that studies auctions, most of these works assume the existence of a central, trusted auctioneer. Unfortunately, in fully decentralized systems, where the nodes that need to cooperate operate under separate spheres of control, such central trusted entity may not exist. Notable examples of such decentralized systems include community networks, clouds of clouds, cooperative nano data centres, among others. In this paper, we make theoretical and practical contributions to distribute the role of the auctioneer. From the theoretical perspective, we propose a framework of distributed simulations of the auctioneer that are Nash equilibria resilient to coalitions and asynchrony. From the practical perspective, our protocols leverage the distributed nature of the simulations to parallelise the execution. We have implemented a prototype that instantiates the framework for bandwidth allocation in community networks, and evaluated it in a real distributed setting., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, 1 algorithm, published in ICDCS'16

Abstract

The ultimate objectives of shariah have been indicated (stated) in numerous verses of the Holy Quran and in the sacred traditions of Holy profit (SAWS) and a set of reforms have been highlighted for enforcement as a purpose of divine commands. Brillscholars and stalwarts of Islamic sciences like Imam Ghazali, Allama Azzedine bin Abdus salam Allama ibn e Qayyum, Allama Shatbi, and imam Shah Wali Ullah R.A have rendered their valuable services in the above-mentioned domain. This article is an introductory study of that knowledge and in the article significance and essentiality of the purposes of shariah have been explained after detailed interpretations of these purposes. Opinions of ancient and modern experts of the concerned field of knowledge have also been incorporated. Finally, various types of objectives of shariah have been debated.
