This study explores the utilization of Spent Coffee Grounds (SCG), a residual product of the coffee industry, as a microfiller reinforcement in Poly‐3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate (PHBV) biopolymer composites at varying concentrations (1%, 3%, 5%, and 7%). Melt compounding via a twin‐screw extruder and subsequent compression molding were employed in the fabrication process. The SCG microfiller, with particle diameters ranging from 1.11 to 1.28 μm, exhibited a significant negative charge (zeta potential: −20 mV). Hydrophobicity increased up to 5% filler concentration, as indicated by higher water contact angles, but diminished at highest concentration likelihood of agglomeration of the spent coffee grounds within the biopolymer matrix. The addition of SCG enhanced overall mechanical properties, particularly at a 5% filler concentration. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE‐SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) confirmed the successful incorporation of SCG microfiller, improving structural characteristics. Schematic drawings illustrated the interphase bonding of microfiller and matrix. However, properties diminished at the highest filler content (7%) due to coffee grounds' agglomeration. Despite this, SCG incorporation enhanced functional properties, making the biopolymer composite a promising material for sustainable packaging and various applications. A sustainable and environmentally conscious approach was employed to create a cellulose nanofiber (CNF) bioaerogel. This modified technique was used for its affordability and eco‐friendly nature, involved the use of reduced concentrations of NaOH solution (ranging from 0 to 0.5 M) to disperse the CNFs. The process included mixing, freezing, neutralizing, and freeze‐drying, ultimately resulting in well‐structured 3D bioaerogels. The concentration of NaOH had a significant impact on the properties of the bioaerogels. The density of the aerogels increases with higher concentration of NaOH. All treated aerogels exhibited impressive water resistance and maintained their structural integrity when exposed to water, indicating promising practical applications. This enhanced structural integrity is attributed to CNF chain rearrangement, facilitated by CNF swelling, dissolution in NaOH, and homogenization. FTIR and XRD analyses provided insight into the transition from cellulose I to cellulose‐II in the bioaerogel structure. These findings contribute to the development of eco‐friendly bioaerogels for environmentally conscious applications. The agricultural industry is one of the main economic contributors in developing countries, especially in tropical regions. Extensive land clearing has led to severe erosion within the watersheds, which increases the vulnerability of water catchments to natural disasters, such as floods. Cellulosic fibers, such as jute, sisal, kenaf, hemp, and coir, are gaining increasing worldwide attention for their potential application in controlling soil erosion, principally due to their remarkable biodegradable and physical properties. Nonetheless, the research on biocomposites in controlling soil erosion is limited compared to the natural fibers. This is perhaps due to poor availability and high cost of biodegradable polymers compared to natural fibers, which are abundant and inexpensive. Poor adhesive interactions between the matrix and natural fibers due to the hydrophilic characteristic of the fibers is another major drawback that limits the development of biocomposites for controlling soil erosion. The objective of this study was to find the optimum amount of montmorillonite (MMT) to be incorporated with microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) to enhance physicochemical properties of oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB)-based regenerated cellulose (RC). In this research, RC was synthesised by mixing 6.5 wt% of OPEFB-MCC with 1-butyl,3-methylimidazolium chloride [BMIM]Cl ionic liquid at 75°C by continuous stirring. RC nanocomposites were prepared by adding 1-5 wt% of montmorillonite (MMT) into RC preparation base. Finished solutions of both types were subjected to solution casting process to obtain thin films. Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, tensile test, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), water absorption and contact angle measurements were used as the characterisation tools. FTIR spectroscopy denotes the non-derivative behaviour of [BMIM]Cl ionic liquid. According to SEM images, moderate MMT loading is preferred since high MMT loading shows coarse morphology beyond 3 wt% of MMT. Tensile strength of RC 11 MPa was increased up to 30 MPa as maximum in 4 wt% of MMT loading. Compared with pure RC, TGA curves were shifted to right side with the increased MMT loading and that implies good thermal stability. The highest thermal stability can be seen when the MMT content is 4 wt% since its TGA curve was the rightmost than others. Therefore, MMT can be identified as a good inhibitor for RC to avoid thermal degradation at elevated temperatures. Water absorption was reduced as 91%-37% in 2 h and 96%-41% in 24 h when MMT was increased from 0-5 wt%. Similarly, their contact angle was increased from 30.5o-88.5o for the MMT loading of 0-5 wt%. According to all these results, 3-4 wt% of MMT loading can be proposed as the optimum amount to be added into an RC matrix to utilise these films in packaging, photocatalytic and electrically conductive applications. Typha fibers were chemically retted in 5% sodium hydroxide solution for 1 h, 2 h, 4 h, and 8 h. Changes in chemical compositions of the untreated and treated fibers were monitored with Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy, while changes in the crystallinity index were studied via Xray diffraction. The FTIR spectra and scanning electron microscope images corroborated the successful removal of amorphous portions from the Typha leaf fibers during alkali treatment, which resulted in an enhanced crystallinity index for alkali-treated fibers. The alkali-treated Typha fiber for 1 h showed the highest water contact angle of 87.5°, while the untreated composite showed the lowest contact angle. Typha fiber treated for 4 h had high tensile strength, Young's modulus, and elongation at break of 158 MPa, 1600 MPa, and 7%, respectively. The results showed that there was a general increase in the interfacial shear strength of Typha fiber with epoxy resin and polyester resin with increased time. Both the mechanical properties and crystallinity index of the Typha leaf fibers increased with increased time of retting until 4 h, after which further alkaline retting resulted in decreased values. A composite prepared from oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) and abundantly available wild seaweed showed great potential as a soil stabilizer, which is attributed to its natural hydrophilic nature. The water absorption and thickness swelling percentages of the oil palm empty fruit bunch-seaweed composite (OPEFB-SW) were recorded at 117.2% (± 7.1) and 10.5% (± 1.7), respectively. The main objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the biocomposite in regulating runoff volume and water quality due to soil erosion from the experimental plots. Hence, the volume, turbidity, and total suspended solids (TSS) of the water runoff were investigated. A rainfall simulation test was conducted to test the effectiveness of the cover material (biocomposite) at different application levels (0 kg/m2 (T1), 3.0 kg/m2 (T2), 4.0 kg/m2 (T3), and 5.0 kg/m2 (T4)) of the composite in reducing soil erosion. Overall, the OPEFB-SW composite demonstrated its capability to absorb rainfall impact and therefore stabilize the soil structure. The runoff volume, turbidity, and TSS were reduced significantly to 49.1%, 94.6%, and 99.2%, respectively. Seaweed-based biodegradable films were studied with incorporation of different concentrations of neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf extract. The films were fabricated via a hot casting method and were subjected to physical, mechanical, and morphological examinations to investigate the effect of the neem extract reinforcement in the edible film. There was moderate improvement in the tensile strength, contact angle values, and elongation at break values, while the water vapour permeability was reduced with the addition of neem leaves extract beyond 5 w/w %. Analysis of the morphology of the fabricated films confirmed that there was good dispersion of the neem leaves extract in the seaweed matrix films, which resulted in the enhanced mechanical strength of the fabricated films. Moreover, the fabricated composite films showed excellent antimicrobial activity towards both Gram-positive bacterium subclasses (coccus and bacillus), which is highly desirable for the packaging material in the current scenario. So far, this is the first report on neem leave based seaweed films with enhanced antimicrobial activity, which makes them suitable for sustainable packaging application. The experiments showed that the seaweed-based film incorporated with neem leaves extract has potential application as an active packaging material due to its enhanced mechanical properties and antimicrobial activity. The term hydrocolloid generally refers to substances that form gels or provide viscous dispersion in the presence of water. Alginate, agar, and carrageenan are three commercially valuable hydrocolloids derived from certain brown and red seaweed and each has their distinct physicochemical properties (i.e. functional and bioactive). Various applications of these seaweed hydrocolloids as thickeners, stabilizers, coagulants and salves (in the wound and burn dressings) and materials to produce bio-medical impressions in the food, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industries are highlighted in this review. Although the existing industrial methods of extraction for these seaweed hydrocolloids are well-established, still growing demand has exposed certain limitations of those methods, notably efficiency and product consistency. In order to achieve targeted hydrocolloids for specific purposes and functionalities, some novel and green extraction methods have also been proposed and discussed. Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE), supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), pressurized solvent extractions (PSE), reactive extrusion and photobleaching process are selectively presented as highly promising candidates that can avoid the use of chemicals and provide novel means of access to seaweed hydrocolloids with both economic and environmental benefits. However, this review does not provide the 'best' method or procedure as many are still under development. Hence, the review gives 'food for thought'as to new processes which might be adopted industrially and concluded that further research is required in order to contribute additional new knowledge and refinement to this field of study. Seaweed and cellulose are promising natural polymers. This article reviews the basic information and recent developments of both seaweed and cellulose biopolymer materials as well as analyses the feasible formation of seaweed/cellulose composite films. Seaweed and cellulose both exhibit interesting film-forming properties. Nevertheless, seaweed has poor water vapour barrier and mechanical properties, whereas cellulose is neither meltable nor soluble in water or common organic solvents due to its highly crystalline structure. Therefore, modification of these hydrocolloids has been done to exploit their useful properties. Blending of biopolymers is a must recommended approach to improve the desired characteristics. From the review, seaweed is well compatible with cellulose, which possesses excellent mechanical strength and water resistance properties. Moreover, seaweed/cellulose composite films can prolong a product's shelf life while maintaining its biodegradability. Additionally, the films show potential in contributing to the bioeconomy. In order to widen seaweed and cellulose in biocomposite application across various industries, some of the viewpoints are highlighted to be focused for future developments and applications. Composite materials made from renewable resources can minimize the environmental pollution. In this work, biocomposite films were produced using seaweed as matrix and empty fruit bunch (EFB) pulp fibers as reinforcement. Based on the results, the EFB pulp-seaweed composite films exhibited better mechanical properties than the seaweed film. It was also observed that 50% EFB pulp loading gave the highest tensile strength (81.4 MPa) and elongation at break (5.4%). This phenomenon was supported by SEM analysis, in which more fiber breakage than fiber pull-out was observed on the tensile fracture surface of composite film. Additionally, no agglomeration of the pulp fibers was observed. Instead, the pulp fibers were homogenously distributed throughout the film. In contrast, the contact angle of the seaweed-based films started to decrease once the pulp fibers were added. The decrease in the contact angle was attributed to the hydrophilic nature of the pulp fibers. Nevertheless, the contact angle values of all composite films were still comparatively high and thus, this would not affect their application as a packaging film. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
