Background: Hip fracture is considered a major health problem worldwide. The current study aimed to investigate hip fracture characteristics among older people in Iraq and factors involving postoperative mortality.Method: A single cohort study was carried out in Sulaimani and Shar Teaching hospitals in Sulaimani from the 1st of July 2018 to 30th of June 2019. Hip fracture was diagnosed by a specialist physician using an X-Ray. Prostate cancer is prevalent among men aged over 65 and has been reported as the fourth most common cause of mortality of males all over the world. In addition to age, family history, and race, there are some lifestyle features such as diet, obesity, alcohol, and smoking are believed to play a role in its development. The present study was carried out in order to examine the clinical and epidemiologic characteristics of castration-resistant prostate cancer patients identify predictive factors for development of resistance to hormonal therapy. The present retrospective cohort study was carried out on 150 patients who were diagnosed with prostate cancer at Hiwa Cancer hospital in Sulaimania, Iraqi Kurdistan over the period of 2009-2014. Required data were collected using face-to-face or phone interviews using a questionnaire and the patients’ hospital records. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, independent samples t-test, Mann Whitney test, and Pearson’s Chi-square test through SPSS 20.0.

Background: Due to the stability and economic development in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, increase in the number of traffic crashes has been one of the serious challenges that local authorities have faced with. The present study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of road traffic accidents (RTAs), road traffic injuries (RTIs), and their causes in Sulaimaniyah City, Kurdistan Region, Iraq. Materials and Methods: The present descriptive study was conducted based on the data collected from the Health Directorate/ MOH and the Traffic Department/ Ministry of Interior in Sulaimaniyah. A questionnaire was also used to collect required data from RTA casualties who were admitted to Sulaimaniyah Main Emergency Hospital during a 6-month period from January first till the end of June 2014. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software version 21.0. Results: Based on the results obtained from Sulaimaniyah Main Emergency Hospital, there were 251 RTA victims in 2014 within the age range of 1 to 81 years. Moreover, RTAs led to the death of 270 and 280 individuals in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The main causes of RTAs were respectively over speeding (33%), the sudden appearance of a vehicle (13.9%), and vehicle slip (10.4%), speeding (48.7%), followed by drowsiness of the drivers (36.9%), and drunken driving (5.6%). Conclusion: In order to reduce RTAs, the overall quality of roads, quality of cars, and general driving skills should be improved. Moreover, for decreasing the rate of crashes inside the city, public transport modes such as tram or train should be prepared.

As the most common solid tumor diagnosed among men, prostate cancer is responsible for the death of aremarkable number of men worldwide every year. The present study was carried out in order to figure outthe survival patterns and the effective variables in patients with hormone refractory prostate cancer. Usinga retrospective cohort design with a nested case-control study approach, the present study was carried outon 150 patients with prostate cancer at Hiwa Cancer Hospital located in Sulaimania, the Iraqi Kurdistanin 2014. The patients were assigned into a case group (who developed resistance to androgen deprivationtherapy) and a control group (who did not develop resistance to androgen deprivation therapy within the firstthree years of prostate cancer treatment). The required data were collected through a researcher-designedquestionnaire and using the patients’ hospital records. Most of the patients aged between 65 to 80 years.According to the results, the highest survival probability belonged to the age group 60-80, while the lowestwas related to those aged less than 60 years, and there was no significant relationship between age groupsand overall survival (p>0.05). Prostate cancer is more likely to develop in males aged 65 to 80 year. Theypatients’ overall survival is not correlated with their age, while there is a correlation between the stageof their tumors and their overall survival. The patients’ their progression-free survival was found to besignificantly affected by their age and histopathology, while the stage of their tumors was not in a significantcorrelation with their progression-free survival.

Introduction: The present study was aimed at describing the epidemiological characteristics of female breast cancer and explore its main risk factors in Sulaymaniyah city, the Kurdistan region of Iraq.Material and Methods: The present case-control study was conducted in Sulaymaniyah, the Kurdistan region of Iraq from 2012-2014 in two hospitals. The study sample consisted of 150 women with breast cancer and 150 healthy women. Required data including sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, medical history, and reproductive factors were collected using a questionnaire through face-to-face interviews.Results: The mean age of the cases and controls was 47.89±10.98 and 47.38±10.87 years respectively. Low level of education was a risk factor for breast cancer, such that breast cancer was significantly less prevalent among women with university education than those with lower education (P=0.001). The likelihood of developing breast cancer in women with a positive family history of cancer was significantly higher (P=0.003). Also, women with rural residency, unemployment, low income, early age of menopause, multigravida (+3), history of abortion, duration of feeding the first and second babies, and obesity were at a significantly higher risk of developing breast cancer (P

Background: The association between gastric cancer and H. pylori infection has been supported in very few studies. In this regard, the present study was carried out in order to examine how of H. pylori infection is distributed among gastric patients. Methods: The present study was a single cohort in which 190 patients who were clinically diagnosed with gastric cancer were recruited. The patients’ records were utilized in order to collect data on H. pylori infection. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics using SPSS software version 21. Results: The results indicated that history of H. pylori infection was observed in 63.2% of the patients with gastric cancer. Moreover, prevalence of gastric cancer was more among females (61.5%), residents of rural areas (57.9%), and patients aged over 50 years (73.6%). Conclusion: H. pylori infection was found to be more prevalent among patients with gastric cancer. Future studies are recommended to focus on larger samples in order to generalize the results in the Kurdistan Region.

It is important to consider the nutritional status of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) since it is a key element in the ability to overcome and survive critical illnesses and clinical outcomes. The aim of the present study was to provide a meta-analysis and systematic overview in determining the nutritional status of patients in ICU by examining other studies. All studies published during 2015-2019 on nutritional status in ICU were retrieved from Medline (via PubMed), Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Finally, 23 articles were included in the meta-analysis. Results obtained from these studies showed that the nutritional status of patients in ICU was inappropriate (the pooled proportion of malnutrition was 0.51 in the type of study stratified), in which many patients in this unit had different degrees of malnutrition (moderate-mild malnourished and severe malnutrition is 0.46 and 20%, respectively). According to the results of this study, the nutritional status of patients in ICU was unsatisfactory; hence, it is necessary to consider the nutritional status along with other therapeutic measures at the beginning of the patient’s admission.[GMJ.2020;9:e1678]

Gastric cancer is a disease of elderly patients and mainly metastasis to liver, lung, and peritoneum, while signet ring cell is a variant of gastric cancer and commonly metastasis to peritoneum and lymph nodes. Metastasis to mammary is a rare condition which account for 3% and has poor prognosis. Generally extra mammary carcinoma precedes breast metastasis by 2 years. It’s uncommon to have breast metastasis as a first manifestation of extra mammary malignancies. There is no age limit and presentation my mimic primary breast cancer. Due to rarity of this condition there are no consensuses about clinical, radiological and histological features which make it a challenging task to distinguish primary from metastatic breast neoplasm. The case bellow is a young woman with diagnoses of diffuse-signet ring cell gastric cancer. First presentation was right breast edema with ascites, peritoneal nodules, and enlarged enhancing ovaries on imaging. Biopsy from each site confirmed involvement by metastatic adenocarcinoma with signet ring pattern. Her condition progressed after 5th cycle of EOX.

Vitamin D is one of the fat-soluble vitamins that have a great role in phosphate and calcium balance and bone structure. To our knowledge, there are limited data on the relation between dietary pattern and serum vitamin d concentration. Therefore, the aim of the current study is find out whether, there are any associations between serum vitamin D and with any specific dietary pattern. A cross sectional study was implemented in Baxshen hospital in order to find the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and its relation with dietary pattern among healthy participants. 1131 participants were enrolled in the current study male and female with age 18 – 65 years old, living in Sulaimani city and its districts have not used any supplement in the past 6 months before enrolling the study. Two questionnaires were used for collecting of data, the first one was included demographical data of the participants. Including their age, gender, marital status, educational level, address, and etc. The second one was data on dietary pattern; particularly we focused on some vitamin D dietary sources. A three-day dietary records estimate was taken from the patients and this data were coded and put in dietary software (windiet) and then analyzed. The age of the sample ranged from 18 to 65 years old with the mean of 34.34 years old with a standard deviation of 12.6. One hundred sixty-two (14.3%) of the 1131 participants were female, nine hundred sixty-nine (85.7%) of the participants were male. 65.5 % of them exposure to sun less than 30, 34.5% exposure to sun more than half hour. About 84.6% of participants had severe deficiency of vitamin D and 6.9% of participants had adequate vitamin D. Fish, eggs and yogurt conception was common among those participants whom their serum vitamin D was adequate, in contrary, there were less consumed among those who had vitamin D deficiency. The percentage of obese (99.8%) was significantly higher than normal weight and overweight among severe deficiency Vitamin D. Furthermore, a highly percentage of adequate was (93.6%) in the normal weight. The mean of vitamin D intake was 761 ± 195.65 IU, in normal weight group, and the mean of vitamin d intake was 125.98 ± 53.15 IU, in obese group. This study has concluded that the reach Dietary sources of vitamin D is not enough to provide the body adequate amount of vitamin D, in addition, Obese and overweight individuals tend to have less serum vitamin D status compared to normal weight individuals and finally recommended daily amount of vitamin d intake should be established for Kurdistan people.
