Medicinal plants are used as an important source of medicines in pharmaceutical industry. Rubia cordifolia is widely used to cure diabetes mellitus. Present study was aimed to investigate the antihyperglycemic effects of different fractions of R. cordifolia leaves and to analyze its antioxidant effect and phytochemical composition. Male albino mice were randomly distributed into seven groups (n = 7). Group-I was normal control, group-II was Alloxan (100 mg/kg)-induced diabetic control, and group-III was standard drug (Glibenclamide 0.5 mg/kg)-treated group. Animals in groups IV–VII were treated with n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, n-butanol fraction and aqueous fraction of R. cordifolia, orally administered (100 mg/kg) once daily up to 28 days after Alloxan induction, respectively. Methanolic extract (ME) and fractions of R. cordifilia were analyzed for antioxidant activity and quantification of total phenolic content and total flavonoid content. HPLC of ME and most active fractions were performed. The results showed that RCEF (G-V) and RCBF (G-VI) have significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the increased level of glucose as compared to toxicant control group. It was further revealed that EF and BF have higher antioxidant activity (having IC50 34.9, 36.86 (µg/mL)) owing to phenolic and flavonoid identified by HPLC.

The utilization of paper on a commercial scale is increasing day by day throughout the world that produces million of tons of paper waste yearly and burdened for landfills. The present study focuses on the exploitation of waste papers (office paper, newspaper and tissue paper) as a cheapest alternative source of energy to extract fermentable sugar by applying chemical and enzymatic pretreatments. The quantification of released sugar was analyzed by spectrophotometer and high performance liquid chromatography refractive index (HPLC-RI) detector. Cellulose (12 FPU/g) and β-glucosidase (12 FPU/g) was found to be effective for the extraction of fermentable sugar from paper waste. The contents of cellulose (C6H10O5)n, hemicellulose (C5H10O5)n and lignin (C9H10O2,C10H12O3,C11H14O4) found in office paper were 40%, 32.5%, 22.5%, in newspaper 46.5%, 30.5% 22.5%, and in tissue paper 62%, 22%, 15.5%, respectively. The percentages of sugar contents assessed in this study were 62% in tissue paper and 46.5% in newspaper and 40% in office papers. Among the three substrates, tissue paper (23.4 mg/mL) released a significant amount of glucose (C6H6O12), whereas newspaper (20.8 mg/mL) and office paper (19.6 mg/mL) released less amount of sugar. This research of acid pre-treatment and enzymatic hydrolysis was an efficient method to improve glucose conversion from lignocellulosic waste. Heavy metal contamination of soil and water caused by industrialization has become a major environmental issue in Pakistan. Therefore, it is important to determine the level of contamination of soil and water close to industrial areas. In the current study, we have assessed the heavy metal contamination of soil and groundwater at the leather industrial area of Kasur, Pakistan. Soil and groundwater samples were collected from the study area and analyzed for Cr, Fe, Ni, Cd, Pb, Zn, Co, and Mn by atomic absorption spectrophotometric method. The data revealed that soil and groundwater in the study area are highly contaminated with all tested heavy metals. In particular, chromium concentrations varied from 1970 to 2980 mg kg−1 and 0.82 to 2.25 mg L−1 in soil and groundwater, respectively. Correlation analysis has identified that the heavy metals in the groundwater and soil of the study area having a common source/origin, believed to be the leather industry of Kasur. Context • Screening ethnobotanical plants is a pre-requisite to evaluating their therapeutic potential and can lead to the isolation of new bioactive compounds. Objective • To determine the antibacterial and antifungal therapeutic potential of Justicia adhatoda. Design • The research team conducted an antimicrobial activity. Setting • The study was conducted in a bioscience lab at International Islamic University, Islamabad, Pakistan. Intervention • Methanolic, ethanolic, and ethyl acetate crude extracts of Justicia adhatoda were prepared at concentrations of 1000, 500, and 100 µg/ml. Outcome measures • The crude extracts were evaluated for in vitro antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli and for in vitro antifungal activity against Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, and Fusarium oxysporum, indicating different zones of inhibition. Results • The highest antibacterial activity was recorded in Justicia adhatoda-methanolic extract (16.33 ± 0.57 mm) and Justicia adhatoda-ethanolic extract (17 ± 1 mm) against Escherichia coli at 1000 μg/ml. Justicia adhatoda-ethyl acetate extract (13 ± 1 mm) showed a significant result as a zone of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus at 1000 μg/ml. In the fungal strain culture, the highest antifungal activity was recorded in Justicia adhatoda-methanolic extract (15.66 ± 0.57 mm), Justicia adhatoda-ethanolic extract (14 ± 1 mm), and Justicia adhatoda-ethyl acetate extract (14.33 ± 1.15 mm) against the Aspergillus niger at 1000 μg/ml. Conclusion • The antimicrobial activities may be due to the strong occurrence of active compounds, i.e., saponins, tannins, alkaloids, steroids, phenols, and flavonoids. It has been concluded that Justicia adhatoda extracts are suitable candidates for the development of novel antibacterial compounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
