This paper presents a comprehensive hazard analysis, risk assessment, and loss evaluation for an Evasive Minimum Risk Maneuvering (EMRM) system designed for autonomous vehicles. The EMRM system is engineered to enhance collision avoidance and mitigate loss severity by drawing inspiration from professional drivers who perform aggressive maneuvers while maintaining stability for effective risk mitigation. Recent advancements in autonomous vehicle technology demonstrate a growing capability for high-performance maneuvers. This paper discusses a comprehensive safety verification process and establishes a clear safety goal to enhance testing validation. The study systematically identifies potential hazards and assesses their risks to overall safety and the protection of vulnerable road users. A novel loss evaluation approach is introduced, focusing on the impact of mitigation maneuvers on loss severity. Additionally, the proposed mitigation integrity level can be used to verify the minimum-risk maneuver feature. This paper applies a verification method to evasive maneuvering, contributing to the development of more reliable active safety features in autonomous driving systems.

This paper introduces FSL-HDnn, an energy-efficient accelerator that implements the end-to-end pipeline of feature extraction, classification, and on-chip few-shot learning (FSL) through gradient-free learning techniques in a 40 nm CMOS process. At its core, FSL-HDnn integrates two low-power modules: Weight clustering feature extractor and Hyperdimensional Computing (HDC). Feature extractor utilizes advanced weight clustering and pattern reuse strategies for optimized CNN-based feature extraction. Meanwhile, HDC emerges as a novel approach for lightweight FSL classifier, employing hyperdimensional vectors to improve training accuracy significantly compared to traditional distance-based approaches. This dual-module synergy not only simplifies the learning process by eliminating the need for complex gradients but also dramatically enhances energy efficiency and performance. Photodetectors based on two-dimensional (2D) atomically thin semiconductors suffer from low light absorption, limiting their potential for practical applications. In this work, we demonstrate a high-performance MoS2 phototransistors by integrating few-layer MoS2 on a PN junction formed in a silicon (Si) substrate. The photovoltage created in the PN junction under light illumination electrically gates the MoS2 channel, creating a strong photoresponse in MoS2. We present an analytical model for the photoresponse of our device and show that it is in good agreement with measured experimental photocurrent in MoS2 and photovoltage in the Si PN junction. This device structure separates light absorption and electrical response functions, which provides us an opportunity to design new types of photodetectors. For example, incorporating ferroelectric materials into the gate structure can produce a negative capacitance that boosts gate voltage, enabling low power, high sensitivity phototransistor; this, combined with separating light absorption and electrical functions, enables advanced high-performance photodetectors., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

Visual perception tasks are predominantly solved by Vision Transformer (ViT) architectures, which, despite their effectiveness, encounter a computational bottleneck due to the quadratic complexity of computing self-attention. This inefficiency is largely due to the self-attention heads capturing redundant token interactions, reflecting inherent redundancy within visual data. Many works have aimed to reduce the computational complexity of self-attention in ViTs, leading to the development of efficient and sparse transformer architectures. In this paper, viewing through the efficiency lens, we realized that introducing any sparse self-attention strategy in ViTs can keep the computational overhead low. However, these strategies are sub-optimal as they often fail to capture fine-grained visual details. This observation leads us to propose a general, efficient, sparse architecture, named Fibottention, for approximating self-attention with superlinear complexity that is built upon Fibonacci sequences. The key strategies in Fibottention include: it excludes proximate tokens to reduce redundancy, employs structured sparsity by design to decrease computational demands, and incorporates inception-like diversity across attention heads. This diversity ensures the capture of complementary information through non-overlapping token interactions, optimizing both performance and resource utilization in ViTs for visual representation learning. We embed our Fibottention mechanism into multiple state-of-the-art transformer architectures dedicated to visual tasks. Leveraging only 2-6% of the elements in the self-attention heads, Fibottention in conjunction with ViT and its variants, consistently achieves significant performance boosts compared to standard ViTs in nine datasets across three domains $\unicode{x2013}$ image classification, video understanding, and robot learning tasks., Comment: The code is publicly available at https://github.com/Charlotte-CharMLab/Fibottention

High-gain photodetectors based on two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, in particular those in photoconductive mode, have been extensively investigated in the past decade. However, the classical photoconductive theory was derived on two misplaced assumptions. In this work, we established an explicit analytical device model for Schottky contact MoS2 phototransistors that fits well with experimental data. From the fitting results, we found that the Richardson constant of the MoS2 Schottky contact is temperature dependent, indicating that the Schottky contacts for the 2D material is best described by the mixed thermionic emission and diffusion model. Based on this device model, we further established an analytical photoresponse for the few-layer MoS2 phototransistors, from which we found the voltage distribution on the two Schottky contacts and the channel, and extracted the minority carrier recombination lifetimes. The lifetimes are comparable with the values found from transient photoluminescence measurements, which therefore validates our analytical photoresponses for Schottky contact 2D semiconducting phototransistors., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

A more general formulation of the linear bandit problem is considered to allow for dependencies over time. Specifically, it is assumed that there exists an unknown $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued stationary $\varphi$-mixing sequence of parameters $(\theta_t,~t \in \mathbb{N})$ which gives rise to pay-offs. This instance of the problem can be viewed as a generalization of both the classical linear bandits with iid noise, and the finite-armed restless bandits. In light of the well-known computational hardness of optimal policies for restless bandits, an approximation is proposed whose error is shown to be controlled by the $\varphi$-dependence between consecutive $\theta_t$. An optimistic algorithm, called LinMix-UCB, is proposed for the case where $\theta_t$ has an exponential mixing rate. The proposed algorithm is shown to incur a sub-linear regret of $\mathcal{O}\left(\sqrt{d n\mathrm{polylog}(n) }\right)$ with respect to an oracle that always plays a multiple of $\mathbb{E}\theta_t$. The main challenge in this setting is to ensure that the exploration-exploitation strategy is robust against long-range dependencies. The proposed method relies on Berbee's coupling lemma to carefully select near-independent samples and construct confidence ellipsoids around empirical estimates of $\mathbb{E}\theta_t$.

In recent times, a plethora of hardware accelerators have been put forth for graph learning applications such as vertex classification and graph classification. However, previous works have paid little attention to Knowledge Graph Completion (KGC), a task that is well-known for its significantly higher algorithm complexity. The state-of-the-art KGC solutions based on graph convolution neural network (GCN) involve extensive vertex/relation embedding updates and complicated score functions, which are inherently cumbersome for acceleration. As a result, existing accelerator designs are no longer optimal, and a novel algorithm-hardware co-design for KG reasoning is needed. Recently, brain-inspired HyperDimensional Computing (HDC) has been introduced as a promising solution for lightweight machine learning, particularly for graph learning applications. In this paper, we leverage HDC for an intrinsically more efficient and acceleration-friendly KGC algorithm. We also co-design an acceleration framework named HDReason targeting FPGA platforms. On the algorithm level, HDReason achieves a balance between high reasoning accuracy, strong model interpretability, and less computation complexity. In terms of architecture, HDReason offers reconfigurability, high training throughput, and low energy consumption. When compared with NVIDIA RTX 4090 GPU, the proposed accelerator achieves an average 10.6x speedup and 65x energy efficiency improvement. When conducting cross-models and cross-platforms comparison, HDReason yields an average 4.2x higher performance and 3.4x better energy efficiency with similar accuracy versus the state-of-the-art FPGA-based GCN training platform.

We propose methods to estimate the individual $\beta$-mixing coefficients of a real-valued geometrically ergodic Markov process from a single sample-path $X_0,X_1, \dots,X_n$. Under standard smoothness conditions on the densities, namely, that the joint density of the pair $(X_0,X_m)$ for each $m$ lies in a Besov space $B^s_{1,\infty}(\mathbb R^2)$ for some known $s>0$, we obtain a rate of convergence of order $\mathcal{O}(\log(n) n^{-[s]/(2[s]+2)})$ for the expected error of our estimator in this case\footnote{We use $[s]$ to denote the integer part of the decomposition $s=[s]+\{s\}$ of $s \in (0,\infty)$ into an integer term and a {\em strictly positive} remainder term $\{s\} \in (0,1]$.}. We complement this result with a high-probability bound on the estimation error, and further obtain analogues of these bounds in the case where the state-space is finite. Naturally no density assumptions are required in this setting; the expected error rate is shown to be of order $\mathcal O(\log(n) n^{-1/2})$.

Data collection and analysis from multiple implant nodes in humans can provide targeted medicine and treatment strategies that can prevent many chronic diseases. This data can be collected for a long time and processed using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in a medical network for early detection and prevention of diseases. Additionally, machine learning (ML) algorithms can be applied for the analysis of big data for health monitoring of the population. Wireless powering, sensing, and communication are essential parts of future wireless implants that aim to achieve the aforementioned goals. In this paper, we present the technical development of a wireless implant that is powered by radio frequency (RF) at 401 MHz, with the sensor data being communicated to an on-body reader. The implant communication is based on two simultaneous wireless links: RF backscatter for implant-to-on-body communication and a galvanic link for intra-body implant-to-implant connectivity. It is demonstrated that RF powering, using the proposed compact antennas, can provide an efficient and integrable system for powering up to an 8 cm depth inside body tissues. Furthermore, the same antennas are utilized for backscatter and galvanic communication.
