Abstract

A first gamma-ray study of 47,49Cl spectroscopy was performed at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory with 50Ar projectiles at 217 MeV/nucleon, impinging on the liquid hydrogen target of the MINOS device. Prompt de-excitation gamma-rays were measured with the NaI(Tl) array DALI2+. Through the one-proton knockout reaction 50Ar(p,2p), a spin assignment could be determined for the low-lying states of 49Cl from the momentum distribution obtained with the SAMURAI spectrometer. A spin-parity J = 3/2+ is deduced for the ground state of 49Cl, similar to the recently studied N = 32 isotope 51K.

Abstract

The electric dipole strength distribution in 120Sn between 5 and 22 MeV has been determined at RCNP Osaka from a polarization transfer analysis of proton inelastic scattering at E_0 = 295 MeV and forward angles including 0{\deg}. Combined with photoabsorption data an electric dipole polarizability \alpha_D(120Sn) = 8.93(36) fm^3 is extracted. The dipole polarizability as isovector observable par excellence carries direct information on the nuclear symmetry energy and its density dependence. The correlation of the new value with the well established \alpha_D(208Pb) serves as a test of its prediction by nuclear energy density functionals (EDFs). Models based on modern Skyrme interactions describe the data fairly well while most calculations based on relativistic Hamiltonians cannot., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The electric dipole strength in 120Sn has been extracted from proton inelastic scattering experiments at E_p = 295 MeV and at forward angles including 0 degree. Below neutron threshoild it differs from the results of a 120Sn(gamma,gamma') experiment and peaks at an excitation energy of 8.3 MeV. The total strength corresponds to 2.3(2)% of the energy-weighted sum rule and is more than three times larger than what is observed with the (gamma,gamma') reaction. This implies a strong fragmentation of the E1 strength and/or small ground state branching ratios of the excited 1- states., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Abstract

In order to study the T-z = +1 -> 0 Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions in the mass A = 26 system, a charge-exchange reaction Mg-26(He-3,t)Al-26 was performed at an incident energy of 140 MeV/nucleon and scattering angle at and near 0 degrees, where T-z is the z component of isospin T defined by (N - Z)/2. In this (p, n)-type reaction, it is expected that GT states with T = 0, 1, and 2 are excited. An energy resolution of Delta E = 23 keV allowed us to study many discrete states. Most of the prominent states showed 0 degrees-peaked angular distributions, which suggested that they are the states excited by Delta L = 0 GT transitions. Candidates of GT states were studied up to an excitation energy E-x = 18.5 MeV. The reduced GT transition strengths, B(GT), were derived assuming the proportionality between cross sections and B(GT) values. Standard B(GT) values were obtained form the Si-26 beta decay, where the mirror symmetry of T-z = +/- 1 -> 0 GT transitions was assumed. The GT strength, as a whole, is divided in two energy regions: the region of up to 8.5 MeV and the higher-energy region of 8.5-12.8MeV, where the strength in the latter region distributed like a resonance. The obtained GT strength distribution is compared with the results of random phase approximation calculations. The T = 2 GT states are expected in the region E-x >= 13.5 MeV. By comparing with the results of (n, p)-type Mg-26(d, He-2)Na-26 and Mg-26(t, He-3)Na-26 reactions, the isospin symmetry of T = 2 GT states is discussed. Owing to the high-energy resolution, we could study the decay widths Gamma for the states in the E-x > 9 MeV region. The T = 2 state at 13.592 MeV is not noticeably wider than the experimental energy resolution. The narrow width of the state is explained in terms of isospin selection rules.

Abstract

A Ga-71(He-3,t)Ge-71 charge-exchange experiment was performed to extract with high precision the Gamow-Teller (GT) transition strengths to the three lowest-lying states in Ge-71, i.e., the ground state (1/2(-)), the 175 keV (5/2(-)) and the 500 key (3/2(-)) excited states. These are the relevant states, which are populated via a charged-current reaction induced by neutrinos from reactor-produced Cr-51 and Ar-37 sources. A precise measurement of the GT transition strengths is an important input into the calibration of the SAGE and GALLEX solar neutrino detectors and addresses a long-standing discrepancy between the measured and evaluated capture rates from the Cr-51 and Ar-37 neutrino calibration sources, which has recently spawned new ideas about unconventional neutrino properties. Abstract

The Gamow-Teller (GT) strength distribution has been investigated in a high-resolution (3He,t) charge-exchange experiment on the double-beta (ßß) decaying nucleus 96Zr. The experiment was carried out at the Osaka University Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP) with a 420 MeV incident 3He beam and the Grand Raiden magnetic spectrometer. A final-state energy resolution of 32 keV was achieved. A large fraction of the low-energy GT- strength is identified in a single state at 694 keV. A similar observation has been made in a 96Mo(d,2He)96Nb experiment at 120 keV resolution for the GT+ strength. It is found that this single state makes up nearly 100% of the nuclear matrix element for the 96Zr two-neutrino double-beta (2vßß) decay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Gamow-Teller (GT) strength distributions have been investigated in a high-resolution (³He,T) charge-exchange experiment on the double-ß (ßß ) decaying nuclei 128Te and l30Te. The experiment was carried out at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics, Osaka, with a 420-MeV incident 3He beam and the Grand Raiden magnetic spectrometer. A final-state energy resolution of 35 keV was achieved. The extracted GT strength distributions at low excitation energies in the final nuclei l28I and 130I are presented and discussed in the context of the ßß decay matrix elements for the two tellurium nuclei. The additional neutron pair in l30Te seems to produce a moderate increase in the fragmentation of the low-energy GT distribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Gamow-Teller (GT) strength distribution has been investigated in a high-resolution (³He,t) charge-exchange experiment on the double-beta (ββ) decaying nucleus 100Mo. The experiment was carried out at the Osaka University Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP) with a 420 MeV incident³He beam and the Grand Raiden magnetic spectrometer. A final-state energy resolution of 33 keV was achieved. It was found that nearly the entire low-energy (up to ≈ 4 MeV) GT- strength is concentrated in the ground-state transition to 100Tc, which is interpreted as a result of the particular neutron and proton sub-shell occupancies. The impact on the matrix elements for the two-neutrino double-beta (2vββ) decay and the use of 100Mo as a neutrino detection material is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A 76Ge(³He,t)76As charge-exchange experiment at an incident energy of 420 MeV has been performed with an energy resolution of 30 keV. The Gamow-Teller GT- strength distribution in 76As, which is the intermediate nucleus in the double-beta (ββ) decay of 76Ge, has been extracted. An unusually strong fragmentation of the GT- strength is observed even at low excitation energies of Ex ⩽ 5 MeV. By combining the data with those for GT+ transitions from a recent 76Se(d,²He)76As measurement, the nuclear matrix element for the 76Ge 2νββ decay has been evaluated. A lack of correlation among the GT transition strengths feeding the same levels from the two different directions is observed. The impact on the 76Ge 2νββ decay nuclear matrix element is discussed.
