This paper is attempt to develop a stochastic inventory model with quadratic price-sensitive demand. Objective function is developed by incorporating promotional efforts to boost the market demand, preservation technology to reduce the rate of deterioration, proportionate shortage time and partial backloggings. The proposed work is to generalise the stochastic demand with different probability distributions and their comparisons. The objective is to find the optimal price, optimal replenishment, and optimal preservation technology investment while optimizing the total profit per unit time. In the case of partial backlogging and lost sale, we deduced the optimal replenishment schedules for respective price and preservation technology cost. Also, we shown analytically and graphically that the total profit per unit time is a concave function with respect to per unit time, price, and preservation cost. The theoretical implications have been validated by useful results and numericals. Also, we examine the impact of various parameters for the best course of action. The conclusions drawn from the assessment might be useful for managerial purposes.

Background: Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are a leading cause of hospitalizations and mortality among patients receiving hemodialysis (HD) therapy, especially those with a central venous catheter (CVC) for dialysis access. The use of chlorhexidine impregnated catheter caps (ClearGuard) has been associated with a decrease in the rate of HD catheter-related BSIs (CA-BSIs) in adults; similar data have not been published for children., Methods: We compared CA-BSI data from participating centers within the Standardizing Care to Improve Outcomes in Pediatric Endstage Kidney Disease (SCOPE) collaborative based on the center's use of ClearGuard caps for patients with HD catheter access. Centers were characterized as ClearGuard (CG) or non-ClearGuard (NCG) centers, with CA-BSI data pre- and post-CG implementation reviewed. All positive blood cultures in participating centers were reported to the SCOPE collaborative and adjudicated by an infectious disease physician., Results: Data were available from 1786 SCOPE enrollment forms completed January 2016-January 2022. January 2020 served as the implementation date for analyzing CG versus NCG center data, with this being the time when the last CG center underwent implementation. Post January 2020, there was a greater decrease in the rate of HD CA-BSI in CG centers versus NCG centers, with a decrease from 1.18 to 0.23 and 0.41 episodes per 100 patient months for the CG and NCG centers, respectively (p = 0.002)., Conclusions: Routine use of ClearGuard caps in pediatric dialysis centers was associated with a reduction of HD CA-BSI rates in pediatric HD patients., (© 2024. Background: Exit site infections are a risk factor for the development of peritonitis in patients on long-term peritoneal dialysis. Visual assessments of an exit site utilising currently available tools (Twardowski and Mid-European Pediatric Peritoneal Dialysis Study Group (MEPPS)) are necessary to objectively characterise the appearance of an exit site. The aim of this study was to assess the interobserver agreement of exit site evaluations utilising both exit site scoring tools., Methods: Exit site evaluations were independently performed by two evaluators during outpatient visits at 13 sites within the Standardizing Care to Improve Outcomes in Pediatric End Stage Kidney Disease collaborative. The frequency and percentage of evaluations where both reviewers agreed were calculated. A sub-analysis was performed looking at evaluations where disagreement occurred., Results: A total of 371 paired exit site evaluations were collected over 6 months. For the majority of evaluations (range: 78%-97% Twardowski, 78%-97% MEPPS), both reviewers agreed that no abnormality was present across all domains. When the analysis was restricted to evaluations where at least one reviewer noted an abnormality, interobserver agreement fell across all domains (range: 31%-61% Twardowski, 56%-66% MEPPS). Disagreements more commonly occurred regarding the presence versus absence of an abnormality, rather than a difference in the severity of an abnormality., Conclusions: Whereas interobserver agreement is high when the appearance of a peritoneal dialysis catheter exit site is characterised as 'normal', interobserver disagreement is common when the appearance of the exit site is 'abnormal'. Background: Many recommendations regarding peritonitis prevention in international consensus guidelines are opinion-based rather than evidence-based. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter insertion technique, timing of gastrostomy placement, and use of prophylactic antibiotics prior to dental, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary procedures on the risk of peritonitis in pediatric patients on PD., Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of pediatric patients on maintenance PD using data from the SCOPE collaborative from 2011 to 2022. Data pertaining to laparoscopic PD catheter insertion (vs. open), gastrostomy placement after PD catheter insertion (vs. before/concurrent), and no prophylactic antibiotics (vs. yes) were obtained. Multivariable generalized linear mixed modeling was used to assess the relationship between each exposure and occurrence of peritonitis., Results: There was no significant association between PD catheter insertion technique and development of peritonitis (aOR = 2.50, 95% CI 0.64-9.80, p = 0.19). Patients who had a gastrostomy placed after PD catheter insertion had higher rates of peritonitis, but the difference was not statistically significant (aOR = 3.19, 95% CI 0.90-11.28, p = 0.07). Most patients received prophylactic antibiotics prior to procedures, but there was no significant association between prophylactic antibiotic use and peritonitis (aOR = 1.74, 95% CI 0.23-13.11, p = 0.59)., Conclusions: PD catheter insertion technique does not appear to have a significant impact on peritonitis risk. Timing of gastrostomy placement may have some impact on peritonitis risk. Further study must be done to clarify the effect of prophylactic antibiotics on peritonitis risk. Background: ABO incompatible (ABOi) liver transplantation (LT) was initially associated with a higher incidence of vascular, biliary, and rejection complications and a lower survival than ABO compatible (ABOc) LT. Various protocols have been proposed to manage anti-isohemagglutinin antibodies and hyperacute rejection. We present our experience with a simplified protocol using only plasmapheresis., Methods: A retrospective review of all patients who received an ABOi LT at our institution was performed. Comparisons were made based on era (early: 1997-2008, modern: 2009-2020) and severity of disease (status 1 vs. exception PELD at transplant). A pair-matched comparison was done to patients who received an ABOc LT. p  < 0.05 was considered significant., Results: 17 patients received 18 ABOi LT (3 retransplants). Median age at transplant was 7.4 months (1.1-28.9). 66.7% patients were listed as status 1. Hepatic artery thrombosis (HAT) occurred in one patient (5.6%), there were 2 cases of portal vein thrombosis (PVT) (11.1%), and 2 biliary strictures (11.1%). Patient and graft survival improved in the ABOi modern era, although not significantly. In the pair-matched comparison, complications (HAT p  = 0.29; PVT p  = 0.37; biliary complications p  = 0.15) and survival rates were similar. Patient and graft survivals were 100% in the non-status 1 ABOi patients compared to 67% ( p  = 0.11) and 58% ( p  = 0.081) respectively for patients who were transplanted as status 1., Conclusion: ABO incompatible liver transplants in infants with a high PELD score have excellent outcomes. Background: Initiation of continuous kidney replacement therapy (CKRT) greater than 20% fluid overload is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. We aimed to reduce the number of patients initiated on CKRT greater than 20% fluid overload by 50% in one year by implementation of a quality improvement initiative., Methods: This is a prospective quality improvement study set in a pediatric ICU of an urban children's hospital of patients initiated on CKRT over 2 years. The intervention included creation of an electronic health record order for daily calculation of net percent fluid overload, incorporation into daily rounds, and education programs tailored to physicians and bedside nursing. We measured adherence with the new order set, percent fluid overload at CKRT initiation, days on CKRT, timing of first nephrology consultation, and death prior to discharge., Results: A total of 32% of patients were initiated on CKRT greater than 20% fluid overload pre-initiative and 9% post-initiative, a 72% reduction over 13 months. Patients initiated on CKRT greater than 20% fluid overload had median CKRT course of 8 (IQR 4-14) vs. 22 days (IQR 13.5-62)., Conclusion: Creating a system using EHR with education may reduce initiation of CKRT after development of severe fluid overload. Background: Continuous kidney replacement therapy (CKRT) is a mainstay of therapy for management of severe acute kidney injury (AKI) in critically ill pediatric patients. There is limited data on the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) after discharge in this population., Methods: This is a single-center, retrospective cohort study of all pediatric patients ages 0-17 years who received CKRT from 2013 to 2017. The study excluded patients with pre-existing CKD, those who died prior to discharge, and those who had insufficient follow-up data. Patients were followed after hospital discharge and electronic health record data was collected and analyzed to assess for incidence of and risk factors for kidney sequelae., Results: A total of 42 patients were followed at a median time of 27 months (IQR 17.2, 39.8). Of these, 26.2% had evidence of CKD and 19% were at risk for CKD. Lower eGFR at hospital discharge was associated with increased odds of kidney sequelae (aOR 0.985; 95% CI 0.972, 0.996). Ages 0- < 1 and 12-17 were not significantly different (aOR 0.235, 95% CI 0.024, 1.718) and had the highest incidence of kidney sequelae (50% and 77%, respectively). Ages 1-5 and 6-11 had a decreased odds of kidney sequelae compared to the 12-17 year age group (aOR 0.098; 95% CI 0.009, 0.703 and aOR 0.035; 95% CI 0.001, 0.39, respectively). Only 54.8% of patients (n = 23) were seen in the nephrology clinic after discharge., Conclusions: Patients who receive CKRT for AKI have a significant risk of CKD, while follow-up with a pediatric nephrologist in these high-risk patients is sub-optimal. Background: Survival to hospital discharge in neonates born with kidney failure has not been previously described., Methods: This was a retrospective, observational analysis of the Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) database from 2005 to 2019. Primary outcome was survival at discharge; secondary outcomes were hospital and ICU length of stay (LOS). Univariate analysis was performed to describe the population by birth weight (BW) and characterize survival; multivariable generalized liner mixed modeling assuming a binomial distribution and logit link was performed to identify mortality risk factors., Results: Of 213 neonates born with kidney failure (median BW 2714 g; GA 35 weeks; 68% male), 4 (1.9%) did not receive dialysis or peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter placement, 152 (72.9%) received PD only, 49 (23.4%) received PD plus extracorporeal dialysis (ECD), and 8 (3.4%) were treated with an undocumented dialysis modality. Median age at dialysis initiation was 7 days; median hospital LOS and ICU LOS were 84 and 69 days, respectively. One-hundred and sixty-two patients (76%) survived to discharge. Non-survivors (n = 51) were more likely to have received ECD and mechanical ventilation, and had a longer duration of mechanical ventilation. Every day of mechanical ventilation increased the mortality odds by 2% (n = 189; adjusted OR 1.02; 1.01, 1.03); in addition, the odds of mortality were 2 times higher in those who received ECD vs. only PD (adjusted OR 2.25; 1.04, 4.86)., Conclusions: Survival to initial hospital discharge occurs in the majority of neonates born with kidney failure. Predictors of increased mortality included longer duration of mechanical ventilation, as well as the requirement for ECD. Every year, the VISion Understanding and Machine intelligence (VISUM) summer school runs a competition where participants can learn and share knowledge about Computer Vision and Machine Learning in a vibrant environment. 2021 VISUM's focused on applying those methodologies in fashion. Recently, there has been an increase of interest within the scientific community in applying computer vision methodologies to the fashion domain. That is highly motivated by fashion being one of the world's largest industries presenting a rapid development in e-commerce mainly since the COVID-19 pandemic. Computer Vision for Fashion enables a wide range of innovations, from personalized recommendations to outfit matching. The competition enabled students to apply the knowledge acquired in the summer school to a real-world problem. The ambition was to foster research and development in fashion outfit complementary product retrieval by leveraging vast visual and textual data with domain knowledge. For this, a new fashion outfit dataset (acquired and curated by FARFETCH) for research and benchmark purposes is introduced. Additionally, a competitive baseline with an original negative sampling process for triplet mining was implemented and served as a starting point for participants. The top 3 performing methods are described in this paper since they constitute the reference state-of-the-art for this particular problem. To our knowledge, this is the first challenge in fashion outfit complementary product retrieval. Moreover, this joint project between academia and industry brings several relevant contributions to disseminating science and technology, promoting economic and social development, and helping to connect early-career researchers to real-world industry challenges., (© The Author(s) 2022.)

Introduction: Conventional contact tracing approaches have not kept pace with the scale of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the highly anticipated smartphone applications for digital contact tracing efforts are plagued by low adoption rates attributed to privacy concerns; therefore, innovation is needed in this public health capability. Materials and Methods: This study involved a cross-sectional, nonrepresentative, online survey in the United States of individuals tested for COVID-19. Testing survey items measured the performance of conventional contact tracing programs, quantified the stigma related to the notification of COVID-19 close contacts, and assessed the acceptability of a website service for digital contact tracing. Results: A sample of 668 (19.9%) individuals met the inclusion criteria and consented to participation. Among the 95 participants with COVID-19, results were received after a median of 2 days, 63.2% interacted with a contact tracing program a median of 2 days after receiving test results, 62.1% had close contacts, and 37.1% of participants with COVID-19 and close contacts did not disclose their results to all close contacts. Among all participants, 17% had downloaded a mobile application and 40.3% reported interest in a website service. One hundred and nine participants perceived stigma with the disclosure of COVID-19 test results; of these, 58.7% reported that a website service for close contact notification would decrease this stigma. Discussion: Conventional contact tracing programs did not comprehensively contact individuals who tested positive for COVID-19 nor did so within a meaningful time frame. Digital contact tracing innovations may address these shortcomings; however, the low penetration of mobile application services in the United States indicates that a suite of digital contact tracing tools, including website services, are warranted for a more exhaustive coverage of the population. Conclusions: Public health officials should develop a complementary toolkit of digital contact tracing strategies to enable effective pandemic containment strategies.

Background: In its first 3 years, the Standardizing Care to Improve Outcomes in Pediatric End Stage Renal Disease (SCOPE) Collaborative demonstrated a statistically significant increase in the likelihood of compliance with a standardized follow-up care bundle and a significant reduction in peritonitis. We sought to determine if compliance with care bundles and low peritonitis rates could be sustained in centers continuously participating for 84 months., Methods: Centers that participated from collaborative launch through the 84-month study period and provided pre-launch peritonitis rates were included. Children on maintenance peritoneal dialysis were eligible for enrollment. Changes in bundle compliance were assessed using a logistic regression model or a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). Changes in average annualized peritonitis rates over time were modeled using GLMMs., Results: Nineteen centers contributed 1055 patients with 1268 catheters and 17,247 follow-up encounters. The likelihood of follow-up compliance increased significantly over the study period (OR 1.05 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03, 1.07; p < 0.001). Centers achieved ≥ 80% follow-up bundle compliance by 28 months and maintained a mean compliance of 84% between 28 and 84 months post-launch. Average monthly peritonitis rates decreased from 0.53 (95% CI 0.37, 0.70) infections per patient-year pre-launch to 0.30 (95% CI 0.23, 0.43) at 84 months post-launch, p < 0.001., Conclusions: Centers participating in the SCOPE Collaborative for 84 months achieved and maintained a high level of compliance with a standardized follow-up care bundle and demonstrated a significant and continued reduction in average monthly peritonitis rates.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. The treatment of patients with lung cancer harboring mutant EGFR with orally administered EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) has been a paradigm shift. Osimertinib and rociletinib are third-generation irreversible EGFR TKIs targeting the EGFR T790M mutation. Osimertinib is the current standard of care for patients with EGFR mutations due to increased efficacy, lower side effects, and enhanced brain penetrance. Unfortunately, all patients develop resistance. Genomic approaches have primarily been used to interrogate resistance mechanisms. Here we characterized the proteome and phosphoproteome of a series of isogenic EGFR-mutant lung adenocarcinoma cell lines that are either sensitive or resistant to these drugs, comprising the most comprehensive proteomic dataset resource to date to investigate third generation EGFR TKI resistance in lung adenocarcinoma. Unbiased global quantitative mass spectrometry uncovered alterations in signaling pathways, revealed a proteomic signature of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and identified kinases and phosphatases with altered expression and phosphorylation in TKI-resistant cells. Decreased tyrosine phosphorylation of key sites in the phosphatase SHP2 suggests its inhibition, resulting in subsequent inhibition of RAS/MAPK and activation of PI3K/AKT pathways. Anticorrelation analyses of this phosphoproteomic dataset with published drug-induced P100 phosphoproteomic datasets from the Library of Integrated Network-Based Cellular Signatures program predicted drugs with the potential to overcome EGFR TKI resistance. The PI3K/MTOR inhibitor dactolisib in combination with osimertinib overcame resistance both in vitro and in vivo . Taken together, this study reveals global proteomic alterations upon third generation EGFR TKI resistance and highlights potential novel approaches to overcome resistance. Clinical and preclinical studies show tissue-specific differences in tumorigenesis. Tissue specificity is controlled by differential gene expression. We prioritized genes that encode secreted proteins according to their preferential expression in normal lungs to identify candidates associated with lung cancer. Indeed, most of the lung-enriched genes identified in our analysis have known or suspected roles in lung cancer. We focused on the gene encoding neuron-derived neurotrophic factor (NDNF), which had not yet been associated with lung cancer. We determined that NDNF was preferentially expressed in the normal adult lung and that its expression was decreased in human lung adenocarcinoma and a mouse model of this cancer. Higher expression of NDNF was associated with better clinical outcome of patients with lung adenocarcinoma. Purified NDNF inhibited proliferation of lung cancer cells, whereas silencing NDNF promoted tumor cell growth in culture and in xenograft models. We determined that NDNF is downregulated through DNA hypermethylation near CpG island shores in human lung adenocarcinoma. Furthermore, the lung cancer-related DNA hypermethylation sites corresponded to the methylation sites that occurred in tissues with low NDNF expression. Thus, by analyzing the tissue-specific secretome, we identified a tumor-suppressive factor, NDNF, which is associated with patient outcomes in lung adenocarcinoma.

Background: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is the preferred chronic dialysis modality amongst pediatric patients. Peritonitis is a devastating complication of PD. Adult data demonstrates early onset peritonitis (EP) is associated with higher rates of subsequent peritonitis and technique failure. Limited data exists regarding EP in the pediatric population, here defined as peritonitis occurring within 60 days of catheter insertion., Methods: PD catheter insertion practices and EP episodes were examined from the Standardizing Care to Improve Outcomes in Pediatric End Stage Renal Disease (SCOPE) collaborative database., Results: There were 98 episodes of EP amongst 1106 PD catheters inserted. Multivariable analysis demonstrated a significant association between early use of the PD catheter and EP (P = 0.001). Age less than 1 year at the time of catheter insertion (P < 0.001), first catheter placed (P < 0.001) for the patient, use of a plastic adapter (P = 0.003), placement of sutures at the exit site (ES) (P = 0.032), and dressing change prior to 7 days post-operatively (P < 0.001) were all significantly associated with early PD catheter use. Concurrent placement of a hemodialysis catheter was associated with a decreased risk for early PD catheter use (P = 0.010)., Conclusions: In this large cohort of pediatric PD recipients, 8.4% of PD catheters were associated with the development of EP. The finding of an association between early use of the PD catheter and EP represents a potentially modifiable risk factor to reduce infection rates within this patient population.

Background: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter obstruction often leads to surgical revision and may require transition to hemodialysis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate risk factors (including omentectomy) associated with early PD catheter obstruction (<6 months from insertion)., Methods: A retrospective review of all PD catheters inserted at a single high-volume referral center (2005-2018) was performed. 185 PD catheters were placed in 123 patients (45 female). Potential risk factors for early catheter obstruction were analyzed using Chi-square analysis (p < 0.05 considered statistically significant)., Results: Median age at catheter insertion was 3.42 years (3 days-39 years). Early catheter obstruction occurred in 42 cases (22.7%). Median time to early obstruction was 24 days (3-118 days). Previous PD catheter placement (p = 0.9) or prior abdominal surgery (p = 0.89) was not associated with obstruction. Weight ≥ 10 kg (p = 0.011) and age ≥ 1 year (p = 0.048) were associated with a significantly higher incidence of obstruction. Overall, omentectomy was associated with a trend in reduction of early obstruction in patients with weight ≥ 10 kg (p = 0.08) and significantly in patients ≥1 year (p = 0.028)., Conclusion: Early PD catheter obstruction appears to occur more often in older patients with a higher weight. Aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) contain a mixture of organic chemicals, including per- and poly-fluorinated, alkyl sulfonate substances (PFAS) (1-5%, w/w). Some longer-chain PFAS can be toxic, moderately bioaccumulative and persistent in the environment. In the present work, decomposition of PFAS present in two commercially available AFFFs (ANSUL- and 3M-) was investigated using a sono-chemical reactor of volume 91 L. The reactor consists of 12 transducers with operating frequencies of 1 MHz or 500 kHz and total input power of 12 kW. Degradation of PFASs performed using various dilutions of AFFF revealed that release of F - and SO 4 -2 ions was inversely proportional to initial pH of up to 4. Defluorination of ANSUL-AFFF resulted in an increase in the concentration of F - released from 55.6 ± 0.3 µM (500× dilution) to 58.6 ± 0.6 (25× dilution), while for 3M AFFF it increased from 19.9 ± 0.7 µM (500× dilution) to 217.1 ± 2.4 µM (25× dilution). Though amounts of F - released were less for ANSUL-AFFF than for 3M-AFFF, there was a considerable increase in removal of TOC and release of SO 4 -2 present in ANSUL-AFFF. Approximately 90.5% and 26.6% reduction of perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSA) and perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCA) in 3M, respectively, and 38.4% reduction of fluorotelomer sulfonates in ANSUL-AFFF were achieved in 13 h. Metal recovery from aqueous waste streams is an important goal for recycling, agriculture and mining industries. The development of more effective methods of recovery have been of increasing interest. The most common methods for metal recovery include precipitation, electrochemical, ion exchange, flocculation/coagulation and filtration. In the current work, a sono-electrochemical technique employing sound field at megasonic frequency (500kHz or 1MHz) in conjunction with electrochemistry is evaluated for enhanced recovery of selected metal ions (palladium, lead and gallium) with different redox potentials from their aqueous solutions. The surface morphology and elemental composition of the metal deposits were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The percent recovery was found to depend on the type of metal ion and the megasonic frequency used. Here, we have investigated degradation of two commercial AFFF formulations, 3M and Ansul, using sound field at 500kHz and 1MHz, with varying initial concentrations ranging from 200 to 930× dilution. The foams were readily degraded by 1MHz, with percentage of defluorination ranging from 11.1±1.4% (200× dilution of 3M) to 47.1±5.8% (500× dilution of Ansul). Removal of total organic carbon (TOC) ranged from 16.0±1.4% (200× dilution Ansul) to 39.0±7.2% (500× dilution Ansul). Degradation of AFFF was affected by sound frequency with rates of defluorination 10-fold greater when the frequency was 1MHz than when it was 500kHz. Mineralization of TOC was 1.5- to 3.0-fold greater under 1MHz than 500kHz. Rate of fluoride release was 60% greater for the greatest initial concentration of FC in Ansul compared to the least initial concentration. While the rate of mineralization of AFFF was directly proportional to the initial concentration of Ansul, that was not the case for 3M, where the rates of mineralization were approximately the same for all three initial concentrations. Background: Post-infectious glomerulonephritis (PIGN) is an immune complex-mediated glomerular injury that typically resolves. Dominant C3 deposition is characteristic of PIGN, but with the emergence of C3 glomerulonephritis (C3GN) as a distinct entity, it is unclear how the pathologic similarities between PIGN and C3GN should be reconciled. Therefore, nephrologists and nephropathologists need additional guidance at the time of biopsy., Methods: We studied 23 pediatric and young adult patients diagnosed with PIGN. Patients were divided into two groups, one with co-dominance between C3 and immunoglobulins and the other meeting proposed diagnostic criteria for C3GN. Clinical and pathological features were compared., Results: No clinical and/or pathological features could distinguish between those with C3-co-dominant deposits and those with C3 dominance. Nearly all patients in both groups regained their baseline renal function without clinical intervention., Conclusions: Although the identification of abnormalities of the alternative pathway of complement is characteristic of C3GN, testing is not widely available and the turnaround time often exceeds 1 month. Our study found that PIGN with either co-dominant or dominant C3 deposition in a cohort of young patients has excellent short-term outcomes. Close clinical observation for persistent abnormalities, such as hypocomplementemia, prolonged hematuria or proteinuria, is recommended to single out patients that may harbor intrinsic complement abnormalities.

A contactless method using a novel design of the experimental cell for formation of porous silicon with morphological gradient is reported. Fabricated porous silicon layers show a large distribution in porosity, pore size and depth along the radius of the samples. Symmetrical arrangements of morphology gradient were successfully formulated radially on porous films and the formation was attributed to decreasing current density radially inward on the silicon surface exposed to Triton(®) X-100 containing HF based etchant solution. Increasing the surfactant concentration increases the pore depth gradient but has a reverse effect on the pore size distribution. Interestingly, when dimethyl sulfoxide was used instead of Triton(®) X-100 in the etchant solution, no such morphological gradients were observed and a homogeneous porous film was formed.
