Many Heusler compounds are predicted to be ferromagnetic half metals in the bulk, which makes them promising compounds for spintronics. However, for devices the transport spin polarization at specific interfaces requires optimization. We show that investigations of the unidirectional magnetoresistance provide an alternative approach to access this quantity. Based on a Wheatstone-bridge design we probed the unidirectional magnetoresistance of Co2MnSi/(Ag, Cu, or Cr)(0.5 nm)/Pt (or Ta) multilayers and separate the spin-dependent unidirectional spin Hall magnetoresistance from other contributions. We demonstrated that by the insertion of a thin epitaxial Ag layer the spin-dependent contribution is doubled corresponding to a significant increase of the transport spin polarization, which is discussed in the framework of highly spin polarized interface states., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We report on transferring 1E-16-level fractional frequency stability of a "master laser" operated at 1.5 {\mu}m to a "slave laser" operated at 698 nm, using a femtosecond fiber comb as transfer oscillator. With the 698 nm laser, the 1S_0 - 3P_0 clock transition of 87Sr was resolved to a Fourier-limited line width of 1.5 Hz (before: 10 Hz). Potential noise sources contributed by the frequency comb are discussed in detail.

Experimental study of hydrodynamic perturbation evolution triggered by a laser-driven shock wave breakout at the free rippled rear surface of a plastic target is reported. At sub-megabar shock pressure, planar jets manifesting the development of the Richtmyer-Meshkov-type instability in a non-accelerated target are observed. As the shock pressure exceeds 1 Mbar, an oscillatory rippled expansion wave is observed, followed by the "feedout" of the rear-surface perturbations to the ablation front and the development of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, which breaks up the accelerated target., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

State-of-the-art optical oscillators based on lasers frequency stabilized to high finesse optical cavities are limited by thermal noise that causes fluctuations of the cavity length. Thermal noise represents a fundamental limit to the stability of an optical interferometer and plays a key role in modern optical metrology. We demonstrate a novel design to reduce the thermal noise limit for optical cavities by an order of magnitude and present an experimental realization of this new cavity system, demonstrating the most stable oscillator of any kind to date. The cavity spacer and the mirror substrates are both constructed from single crystal silicon and operated at 124 K where the silicon thermal expansion coefficient is zero and the silicon mechanical loss is small. The cavity is supported in a vibration-insensitive configuration, which, together with the superior stiffness of silicon crystal, reduces the vibration related noise. With rigorous analysis of heterodyne beat signals among three independent stable lasers, the silicon system demonstrates a fractional frequency stability of 1E-16 at short time scales and supports a laser linewidth of <40 mHz at 1.5 \mu m, representing an optical quality factor of 4E15.

Masses of 56,57Fe, 53Co^m, 53,56Co, 55,56,57Ni, 57,58Cu, and 59,60Zn have been determined with the JYFLTRAP Penning trap mass spectrometer at IGISOL with a precision of dm/m \le 3 x 10^{-8}. The QEC values for 53Co, 55Ni, 56Ni, 57Cu, 58Cu, and 59Zn have been measured directly with a typical precision of better than 0.7 keV and Coulomb displacement energies have been determined. The Q values for proton captures on 55Co, 56Ni, 58Cu, and 59Cu have been measured directly. The precision of the proton-capture Q value for 56Ni(p,gamma)57Cu, Q(p,gamma) = 689.69(51) keV, crucial for astrophysical rp-process calculations, has been improved by a factor of 37. The excitation energy of the proton emitting spin-gap isomer 53Co^m has been measured precisely, Ex = 3174.3(10) keV, and a Coulomb energy difference of 133.9(10) keV for the 19/2- state has been obtained. Except for 53Co, the mass values have been adjusted within a network of 17 frequency ratio measurements between 13 nuclides which allowed also a determination of the reference masses 55Co, 58Ni, and 59Cu., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Phys. A development program is underway at the IGISOL (Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line) facility, University of Jyvaskyla, to efficiently and selectively produce low-energy radioactive ion beams of silver isotopes and isomers, with a particular interest in N=Z 94Ag. A hot cavity ion source has been installed, based on the FEBIAD (Forced Electron Beam Induced Arc Discharge) technique, combined with a titanium:sapphire laser system for selective laser ionization. The silver recoils produced via the heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reaction, 40Ca(58Ni, p3n)94Ag, are stopped in a graphite catcher, diffused, extracted and subsequently ionized using a three-step laser ionization scheme. The performance of the different components of the hot cavity laser ion source is discussed and initial results using stable 107,109Ag are presented.

We present a measurement of the electron-capture branch of $^{100}$Tc. Our value, $B(\text{EC}) = (2.6 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-5}$, implies that the $^{100}$Mo neutrino absorption cross section to the ground state of $^{100}$Tc is roughly one third larger than previously thought. Compared to previous measurements, our value of $B(\text{EC})$ prevents a smaller disagreement with QRPA calculations relevant to double-$\beta$ decay matrix elements.

The laser ion source project at the IGISOL facility, Jyvaskyla, has motivated the development and construction of an rf sextupole ion beam guide (SPIG) to replace the original skimmer electrode. The SPIG has been tested both off-line and on-line in proton-induced fission, light-ion and heavy-ion induced fusion-evaporation reactions and, in each case, has been directly compared to the skimmer system. For both fission and light-ion induced fusion, the SPIG has improved the mass-separated ion yields by a factor of typically 4 to 8. Correspondingly, the transmission efficiency of both systems has been studied in simulations with and without space charge effects. The transport capacity of the SPIG has been experimentally determined to be 10^12 ions/s before space charge effects start to take effect. A direct comparison with the simulation has been made using data obtained via light-ion fusion evaporation. A laser ion source is under development at the IGISOL facility, Jyvaskyla, in order to address deficiencies in the ion guide technique. The key elements of interest are those of a refractory nature, whose isotopes and isomers are widely studied using both laser spectroscopic and high precision mass measurement techniques. Yttrium has been the first element of choice for the new laser ion source. In this work we present a new coupled dye-Ti:Sapphire laser scheme and give a detailed discussion of the results obtained from laser ionization of yttrium atoms produced in an ion guide via joule heating of a filament. The importance of not only gas purity, but indeed the baseline vacuum pressure in the environment outside the ion guide is discussed in light of the fast gas phase chemistry seen in the yttrium system. A new ion guide has been modeled and tested for the production of a low energy ($\approx$ 40 kV) ion beam of daughter products of alpha-emitting isotopes. The guide is designed to evacuate daughter recoils originating from the $\alpha$-decay of a $^{233}$U source. The source is electroplated onto stainless steel strips and mounted along the inner walls of an ion guide chamber. A combination of electric fields and helium gas flow transport the ions through an exit hole for injection into a mass separator. Ion guide efficiencies for the extraction of $^{229}$Th$^{+}$ (0.06%), $^{221}$Fr$^{+}$ (6%), and $^{217}$At$^{+}$ (6%) beams have been measured.
