Objectives The aim of this study was to assess expectations of performance that exist in the marketplace for entry-level pathologists’ assistants (PathAs), defined as recent graduates of a pathologists’ assistant program on their first day of employment. Methods A voluntary, anonymous survey was distributed to pathologist and PathA members of the American Society for Clinical Pathology by email. We assessed 98 professional activities of PathAs using a 5-point scale of expectations based on levels of trust placed in them. We also collected demographic information. Results A total of 728 participants responded to this survey, including 280 pathologists and 448 PathAs. We classified 98 activities according to expectations: independent performance (20/98), developing independence (48/98), and not expected of PathAs (5/98). Some activities (25/98) were indeterminate yet likely represent areas of developing independence. Conclusions This study demonstrates an expectation for entry-level PathAs to perform some activities included in the scope of practice independently but eventually to develop independent proficiency for most professional activities. A minority of activities were identified as responsibilities that are not expected of PathAs. Entry-level PathAs, therefore, remain “works in progress,” with an expectation for independent performance of core activities while developing abilities in many areas of professional practice.

THE ANATOMY of the socket deserves a clearer presentation than the anatomy of this region usually receives. "Socket" means the bed or receptacle of the prosthesis. Theoretically, consideration of the anatomy of the region should be simple, since its spatial relationships have been covered in great detail. Actually, the anatomy, and more particularly the physiology, of the orbit without the eye departs farther from the normal than study of the literature would lead one to think. The ratio of the volume of the globe to that of the orbit, according to Duke-Elder, is 4.5: 1, but the removal of the one part makes a profound difference in the other. There are essentially four types of sockets, depending on the procedure or the series of procedures by which the eye is removed. I have attempted to present an outline covering the treatment of burns, especially applicable to a Medical Defense Unit. The principles involved in the treatment have been discussed as regards the first-aid post, casualty station and hospital. A few cases have been presented to illustrate the late therapy employed in our clinic to promote healing, prevent deformity and restore function.

Infected granulating ulcers are at times difficult to heal regardless of the method employed. I have attempted to revive a method that has proved very effectual in our hands, and has replaced largely the use of a great many chemical and biological preparations. I believe that the early implantation of grafts is the solution to the healing of this type of ulcer, regardless of the location and the cosmetic or functional result. I have particularly stressed the healing of the ulcer primarily, and then replacement if necessary by some other form of graft in order to avoid partial or total loss of the graft. Finally, there is very little deformity in the donor area regardless of the size of the graft removed. This is a decided advantage in that this area can be used again if necessary.

Summary A method of repair of hypospadias by the use of the prepuce has been described. This method fulfils the following requirements: (1) The chordee is corrected; (2) the lining of the reconstructed urethra does not grow hair; (3) the urethra has a normal exit in the glans of the penis; (4) no dilatation is required to maintain the lumen of the reconstructed urethra.
