Recent observations of interplanetary scintillation (IPS) at radio frequencies have proved to be a powerful tool for probing the solar environment from the ground. But how far back does this tradition really extend? Our survey of the literature to date has revealed a long history of scintillating observations, beginning with the oral traditions of Indigenous peoples from around the globe, encompassing the works of the Ancient Greeks and Renaissance scholars, and continuing right through into modern optics, astronomy and space science. We outline here the major steps that humanity has taken along this journey, using scintillation as a tool for predicting first terrestrial, and then space weather without ever having to leave the ground., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. We present here a study of the broadband spectral properties of 33 sources detected in HI absorption as part of the ASKAP-FLASH Pilot Surveys. We outline our approach to spectral classification and discuss the correlation seen between spectral shape and the detection of HI absorption. We further consider the implications of the observed correlation on the spatial distribution of the neutral gas, and on the jet-gas interactions. The First Large Absorption Survey in HI (FLASH) is a large-area radio survey for neutral hydrogen in the redshift range 0.41$, and appear to be a mixture of intervening and associated systems. The overall detection rate for HI absorption lines in the Pilot Surveys (0.3 to 0.5 lines per ASKAP field) is a factor of two below the expected value. There are several possible reasons for this, but one likely factor is the presence of a range of spectral-line artefacts in the Pilot Survey data that have now been mitigated and are not expected to recur in the full FLASH survey. We present here RadioSED, a Bayesian inference framework tailored to modelling and classifying broadband radio spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using only data from publicly-released, large-area surveys. We outline the functionality of RadioSED, with its focus on broadband radio emissions which can trace kiloparsec-scale absorption within both the radio jets and the circumgalactic medium of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). In particular, we discuss the capability of RadioSED to advance our understanding of AGN physics and composition within youngest and most compact sources, for which high resolution imaging is often unavailable. These young radio AGN typically manifest as peaked spectrum (PS) sources which, before RadioSED, were difficult to identify owing to the large, broadband frequency coverage typically required, and yet they provide an invaluable environment for understanding AGN evolution and feedback. We discuss the implementation details of RadioSED, and we validate our approach against both synthetic and observational data. Since the surveys used are drawn from multiple epochs of observation, we also consider the output from RadioSED in the context of AGN variability. Finally, we show that RadioSED recovers the expected SED shapes for a selection of well-characterised radio sources from the literature, and we discuss avenues for further study of these and other sources using radio SED fitting as a starting point. The scalability and modularity of this framework make it an exciting tool for multiwavelength astronomers as next-generation telescopes begin several all-sky surveys. When low- and intermediate-mass stars evolve off the main sequence, they expand and cool into the red giant stages of evolution, which include those associated with shell H burning (the red giant branch), core He burning (the red clump), and shell He burning (the asymptotic giant branch). The majority of red giants have masses $< 2 M_\odot$, and red giants more massive than this are often excluded from major studies. Here we present a study of the highest-mass stars ($M > 3.0 M_\odot$) in the Kepler sample of 16,000 red giants. We begin by re-estimating their global seismic properties with new light curves, highlighting the differences between using the SAP and PDCSAP light curves provided by Kepler. We use the re-estimated properties to derive new mass estimates for the stars, ending with a final sample of 48 confirmed high-mass stars. We explore their oscillation envelopes, confirming the trends found in recent works such as low mean mode amplitude and wide envelopes. We find, through probabilistic means, that our sample is likely all core He burning stars. We measure their dipole and quadrupole mode visibilities and confirm that the dipole mode visibility tends to decrease with mass., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, 1 table, accepted to MNRAS

A virtual hands-on computer laboratory has been designed within the Gather online meeting platform. Gather's features such as spatial audio, private spaces and interactable objects offer scope for great improvements over currently used platforms, especially for small-group based teaching. We describe our experience using this virtual computer laboratory for a recent 'Python for Beginners' workshop held as part of the Software Sustainability Institute's 2022 Research Software Camp., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Recent studies have shown that both 21cm HI absorption and soft X-ray absorption serve as excellent tracers of the dense and dusty gas near the active nucleus of young radio galaxies, offering new insight into the physical nature of the circumnuclear medium. To date, a correlation between the column densities derived using these absorption processes has been observed within Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and Gigahertz-Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio sources. While it is possible that this correlation exists within the broader radio population, many samples of radio galaxies make this difficult to test due to selection effects. This paper explores the possibility of a correlation in the broader radio population by analysing a historic sample of 168 radio sources compiled from the literature in such a way so as to minimise selection bias. From this historic sample we conclude that there is some evidence for a correlation between HI and soft X-ray absorption outside of peaked spectrum sources, but that the selection bias towards these sources makes further analysis difficult using current samples.
