A three-year, three-phase program to demonstrate the applicability of telerobotic technology to the testing of satellites and other spacecraft has been initiated. Specifically, the objectives are to design, fabricate, and install into the JPL 25-ft. Space Simulator (SS) a system that will provide the capability to view test articles from all directions in both the visible and infrared (IR) spectral regions, to automatically map the solar flux intensity over the entire work volume of the chamber, and to provide the capability for leak detection. The first year's work, which provides a vertically mobile viewing platform equipped with stereo cameras, will be discussed. Design constraints and system implementation approaches mandated by the requirements of thermal vacuum operation will be emphasized.

Lightweight, multikilowatt solar power arrays in conjunction with electric propulsion offer potential improvements to space exploration, extending the usefulness of existing launch vehicles to higher-energy missions. Characteristics of solar-powered electric propulsion missions are outlined, and preliminary performance estimates are shown. Spacecraft system engineering is discussed with respect to parametric trade-offs in power and propulsion system design. Relationships between mission performance and propulsion system performance are illustrated. The present state of the art of electric propulsion systems is reviewed and related to the mission requirements identified earlier. The propulsion system design and test requirements for a mission spacecraft are identified and discussed. Although only ion engine systems are currently available, certain plasma propulsion systems offer some advantages in over-all system design. These are identified, and goals are set for plasma-thrustor systems to make them competitive with ion-engine systems for mission applications.

Potentialities of electron bombardment ion engines for electric propulsion

An electric thrust subsystem technology development program to demonstrate the readiness of primary electric propulsion for flight applications is described. The development program is based on a subsystem design sufficiently flexible to be applicable to a broad range of mission requirements with minimum impact on the subsystem elements or interface designs. The effort includes development and qualification testing of new subsystem elements, the assembly and test of subsystem models to verify the physical and functional interfaces of the subsystem with other spacecraft subsystems, and the investigation of the effects of thrust subsystem operation on all aspects of spacecraft performance. The present status of this effort and some of the results so far obtained are presented.

This is a two-part report on solar electric propulsion (SEP) performance sensitivity analysis. The first part describes the preliminary analysis of the SEP thrust system performance for an Encke rendezvous mission. A detailed description of thrust subsystem hardware tolerances on mission performance is included together with nominal spacecraft parameters based on these tolerances. The second part describes the method of analysis and graphical techniques used in generating the data for Part 1. Included is a description of both the trajectory program used and the additional software developed for this analysis. Part 2 also includes a comprehensive description of the use of the graphical techniques employed in this performance analysis.
