Abstract

A recent experiment [W. A. Shelton {\emph{et\ al.}}, Phys.\ Rev.\ E {\bf{71}}, 036204 (2005)] measured the response of a nanorod trapped in a viscous fluid to the torque produced by an incident optical frequency electromagnetic wave. The nonlinear differential equation describing this motion is similar that of a damped, driven pendulum. The overdamped limit of this equation has been solved analytically. We analyze the properties of this solution in comparison to the observations of the experiment and find very close agreement., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

2. Exact Ground State Energy of Hubbard Rings in the Atomic Limit

Abstract

Using a straightforward extension of the analysis of Lieb and Wu, we derive a simple analytic form for the ground state energy of a one-dimensional Hubbard ring in the atomic limit. This result is valid for an \textit{arbitrary} number of lattice sites $L$ and electrons $N \leq L$. Furthermore, our analysis, including an application of the theory of stochastic matrices, provides insight into the degeneracy and spin properties of the ground states in the atomic limit. 33. Application of Berry's Phase to the Effective Mass of Bloch Electrons

Abstract

Berry's phase, although well known since 1984, has received little attention among textbook authors of solid state physics. We attempt to address this lack by showing how the presence of the Berry's phase significantly changes a standard concept (effective mass) found in most solid state texts. Specifically, we show that the presence of a non-zero Berry curvature in Bloch systems makes the traditional concept of an inverse effective mass tensor M[superscript -1] problematic, since a routine application of Newton's second law leads to a circular definition. As a consequence, the related concept of cyclotron effective mass "m*" also requires modification. It is shown that "m*" is magnetic-field dependent in non-inversion symmetric systems. This has important ramifications for cyclotron resonance experiments, since such experiments yield "m*" and thereby purportedly give the components of M[superscript -1]. This work represents a "case study" in how Berry's phase effects can modify "standard" solid-state topics in ways that students and instructors may find surprising.
