Maladaptive perfectionism is a trans-diagnostic, multifaceted personality trait which has been associated with psychological distress. The focus of this thesis is the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and substance use. Research to date investigating the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and substance use has been equivocal. Therefore this thesis aimed to develop a better understanding of this relationship. To address this two papers are presented: a systematic literature review (Chapter 1) and a cross-sectional empirical paper (Chapter 2). The appendices section contains additional information relating to the two chapters. The literature review identified, collated and reported previous research in the area of perfectionism and substance misuse (alcohol and drug use). A total of 10 studies were found to be relevant after reviewing the inclusion criteria. Studies were included if they were published in English, in peer reviewed journals, used a quantitative methodology, were conducted with either adult or child populations, in community or clinical settings and reported data regarding the relationship between perfectionistic traits and substance use. The review includes a summary of the conceptualisation of perfectionism, assessment measures utilised and a synopsis of the findings from the studies. The literature to date in this area was reviewed. It was identified that perfectionism was both a risk factor and a protective factor for substance use. These conflicting findings highlighted the complex nature of perfectionism and indicated that mediating factors were influencing the relationship between the two variables. As a result recommendations for future research were proposed. Chapter 2 consists of an empirical paper. This paper drew on recommendations from the systematic review to evaluate the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and substance use. A model was developed based on previous literature in the area and was tested using structural equation modelling. Specifically, the role of self-compassion and coping motives on maladaptive perfectionism and alcohol use were investigated. The paper also extended previous research in this area by using both implicit and explicit measures of maladaptive perfectionism. It was hypothesised that self-compassion would mediate the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and drinking behaviour. Online self-report questionnaires and an implicit association task were completed by 89 individuals from both community and student populations. The analysis supported previous findings that maladaptive perfectionism predicts drinking to cope and results in increased alcohol consumption. It was also identified that although higher scores of maladaptive perfectionism predicted lower selfcompassion, this did not predict alcohol consumption. Exploratory analysis revealed that selfconcealment plays a role in drinking behaviour in those with high maladaptive perfectionism. Taken together, this research highlights the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and avoidant coping strategies such as drinking to cope and self-concealment on drinking behaviour. It develops our understanding of the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and alcohol use and presents recommendations for clinicians and future research. As the empirical paper will be submitted for publication to the Journal of Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology, it is written up in a style required for this.

- Abstract
NERSC has partnered with 20 representative application teams to evaluate performance on the Xeon-Phi Knights Landing architecture and develop an application-optimization strategy for the greater NERSC workload on the recently installed Cori system. In this article, we present early case studies and summarized results from a subset of the 20 applications highlighting the impact of important architecture differences between the Xeon-Phi and traditional Xeon processors. We summarize the status of the applications and describe the greater optimization strategy that has formed.

- Abstract
Transition from primary to secondary school has been a focus of concern regarding pupil anxiety, social integration, lack of progression and under-achievement, particularly for children/young people with special educational needs (SEN). Previous studies often over-depended on data from professionals and treated all SEN as similar. This study gathered data specifically from children/young people with autistic spectrum disorders and their parents (contrasting this with the views of professionals), adopting a more intensive case study methodology. A large number of transition support arrangements were identified. In 4/5 cases the arrangements were delayed and/or incomplete, with a number of specific problems. Despite the size and complexity of their new school, the children/young people were positive about transition, but wanted real inclusion in school activities. Parental evaluations of transition arrangements were considerably lower than those of professionals. Stakeholder perceptions of what worked and did not work were contrasted. Commonalities and differences in the relevant development needs of school staff were identified. Implications for future research, policy and practice are explored. (Contains 7 tables.)

- Abstract
There are various views among academics and researchers about the best type of educational provision for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. In the present study parents and professionals were interviewed to get a better insight into their perceptions regarding the various educational provisions on the specialist to mainstream continuum. Parents seem to be of the view that whatever the educational provision, teachers should have adequate autism-specific training. If all teachers were trained in this way, parents see advantage in the child being in mainstream settings. More importantly, whatever the provision, the quality of delivery, staff attitude and curriculum modification play an important part in creating an inclusive environment. (Contains 2 tables.)

For supporting strategy development, corporate practitioners and consultants have long appropriated the roadmap metaphor for journey-making to establish the concept of strategic roadmapping. The practice involves charting future courses of action to help realize a vision. However, despite the significant uptake and use of the method, there still lacks a discourse on its inherent flexibility. Therefore, this paper outlines roadmapping’s flexible nature from a systems perspective. The key attributes of the approach being general, scalable, customizable and dynamic are characterized. The governing framework underpinning roadmapping is depicted and described. And, to provide guidance on deploying this framework, two critical aspects are covered: (i) framing the challenges being faced and contributions necessary to move forward, and (ii) with specific regard to having to deal with the realized unfolding of time, the need to flex to evolving conditions and new situational circumstances.

362.1 - Abstract
Internet interventions have the potential to support patient self-management of long term conditions. However, their mechanisms of action are unclear. There is also a concern that lack of equity of internet access may limit their benefits. The aim of this thesis was to develop a greater understanding of the potential of internet interventions for patients with a long term condition, in this case coronary heart disease (CHD), and their mechanisms for supporting patient self-management. Mechanisms of action were explored using constructs from psychological theories. Literature reviews of internet and CHD self-management interventions identified illness perceptions, self-efficacy and social support as psychological constructs that may explain mechanisms of action of internet interventions for patients with CHD. These constructs were evaluated in a prospective study with 168 patients with CHD. Participants, with or without home internet access or prior internet experience, had unlimited access to a CHD internet intervention over 9 months. Use of the intervention and changes in psychological constructs, behavioural, emotional and quality of life outcomes were evaluated using a mixed quantitative and qualitative design. Only a small proportion of eligible patients with CHD participated. Participants were predominantly male, highly educated and had better internet access and/or internet experience than was likely in the wider CHD population. Few had experienced recent problems with their condition. Overall use of the intervention was low compared to other internet interventions. Participants who were older, had more recently experienced a cardiac event or diagnosis, had home internet access and prior internet experience made greater use of the intervention. Most participants were positive about the intervention but no significant changes in psychological constructs or health outcomes were found. This implementation of an internet intervention to support CHD self-management appears to have limited potential, particularly for those without home internet access or confidence using computers.

Roadmapping emerged from industry and has evolved over the decades, through improvements and refinements made by both practitioners and research groups, to become an established and extensively deployed method. Roadmaps are popular in helping to convey and communicate the essence of strategic plans, organizational initiatives, program pathways, and future courses of action. But what actually constitutes a roadmap? What are the unique attributes that distinguish them from other journey-mapping approaches and forward-looking business documents? Drawing upon active involvement in industrial engagements, applied research, tool development, and supported by the literature, a roadmap has now been defined as a structured visual chronology of strategic intent . Further, roadmapping has been defined as the application of a temporal–spatial structured strategic lens . As a result of these more rigorous and robust expressions, this article reports and reviews their underpinning concepts and dimensions, and puts them forward as the new standard definitions.

Visualizations have the potential to be a powerful means of communication, especially for quantitative data, helping managers to see significant patterns and deviations. To be effective, visuals need to be appropriate for the task and properly designed. Most organizations tend to limit themselves to a small repertoire of rather simplistic graphs and charts. More expressive and intuitive representations can be deployed to provide both useful and engaging formats. This article presents a new composite form of visualization that has been designed to better convey research and development budget and expenditure figures to senior executives. In addition to providing a summary overview of the data, this functionally designed visualization offers a means to structure discussions in management meetings and provoke examination of what the data means in terms of financial allocations, top budget holders, requested funds, potential shortfalls, and weak/strong performing areas. The visualization deploys a combination of Sankey flow streams, mini pie charts, technology readiness levels, bar charts, annotated tick-marks, and graphic equalizer-style tally bars. Using a real-world dataset, an illustrative example is provided. This novel combination of visual objects provides an exemplar, which other organizations can adapt and apply, to support funding reviews and investment decision-making.

Raccoons (Procyon lotor) often are considered a nuisance species in suburban and urban areas, and thus, must be removed. However, raccoons are capable of removing bait from cage traps without being captured and appear to avoid baits that are infested with fire ants (Solenopsis invicta). We modified Tomahawk® cage traps with an extended metal floor that acted as a trip device, hardware cloth wrapped around the back half of traps to reduce the potential of raccoons obtaining bait without entering the traps, and developed a hook upon which to place baits to minimize the probability of fire ants locating the bait. We then compared the proportion of raccoon captures, baits missing, and baits with fire ants between cage traps with and without the modified floor and bait hook. Twenty-five raccoons were caught, 80 baits were stolen, and 108 baits were infested with fire ants during 432 trap-nights. A greater proportion of raccoons were caught in (G=11.7, 3 df, P

Following piloting, health states underwent valuation by 100 members of the UK public during time trade-off interviews. Mean utilities and descriptive distribution statistics were calculated, and a logistic regression analysis was conducted. Results: The demographic characteristics of the study sample were generally reflective of the UK population. Clear differentiation in valuation between health states was observed. No response/stable disease had an adjusted utility value of 0.87, with a corresponding gain of +0.04 following a treatment response and a decline of –0.35 for disease progression. Adverse events were associated with utility decrements between –0.47 (grade III diarrhea) and –0.05 (grade I/II alopecia). Conclusion: The trade-off interviews derived utility weights show clear differentiation between RR-DTC health states in response to treatment. The values reported in this study are suitable for cost-effectiveness evaluations for new treatments in RR-DTC. 28. Against a bitter tide: How a small UK charity operationalises dissent to challenge the 'hostile environment' for migrant children and families

Kerr, C and Watts, N
- Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Dissent is currently under political and ideological assault in the UK and immigration has long been a target for those looking to quell dissenting practices. At the same time, dissent appears increasingly out of place in the contemporary social work context in England. Yet, as the authors argue, dissent is codified within the professional and ethical standards that social workers in England must adhere to. APPROACH: This article introduces the work of a small UK Charity, Together with Migrant Children, and applies to it key facets of the theoretical basis for dissent through case study and practice-based reflections on challenges in immigration policy and opportunities for dissenting practice. IMPLICATIONS: The authors set out the challenges and opportunities for dissent in practice in statutory, non-statutory and wider community development settings, illustrating how dissent can bring individual ‘success’ that is located within a cumulative structural and tactical change that points to dissent and its practice as a necessary feature of democracy.

32. An Innovative Practitioner Research Model of Continuing Professional Development: A Case Study of an Educational Psychologists' Professional Development Programme in Scotland
- Author

Jindal-Snape, D., Hannah, E., Smith, E., Barrow, W., and Kerr, C.
- Abstract
This article presents an innovative model of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) that has been used in Scotland to encourage research and to develop research skills amongst applied educational (school) psychologists. This is a process-based CPD model rather than the traditional "attendance at CPD workshops" model, leading to active learning and knowledge creation for the professional and the profession. Data collected from educational psychologists and stakeholders suggests that it is very effective but there is room for improvement. The lessons learnt over the 13 years of its operation and through a recently commissioned evaluation will hopefully be of interest to other applied educational psychologists internationally, as well as related professions. - Abstract
The English SARS-CoV-2 epidemic has been affected by the emergence of new viral variants such as B.1.177, Alpha and Delta, and changing restrictions. We used statistical models and the agent-based model Covasim, in June 2021, to estimate B.1.177 to be 20% more transmissible than the wild type, Alpha to be 50–80% more transmissible than B.1.177 and Delta to be 65–90% more transmissible than Alpha. Using these estimates in Covasim (calibrated 1 September 2020 to 20 June 2021), in June 2021, we found that due to the high transmissibility of Delta, resurgence in infections driven by the Delta variant would not be prevented, but would be strongly reduced by delaying the relaxation of restrictions by one month and with continued vaccination. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Technical challenges of modelling real-life epidemics and examples of overcoming these’.

B.1.177, Alpha and Delta, and changing restrictions. We used statistical models and the agent-based model Covasim, in June 2021, to estimate B.1.177 to be 20% more transmissible than the wild type, Alpha to be 50-80% more transmissible than B.1.177 and Delta to be 65-90% more transmissible than Alpha. This article is part of the theme issue 'Technical challenges of modelling real-life epidemics and examples of overcoming these'. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
