Search

Probing and manipulating the spatiotemporal dynamics of hot carriers in nanoscale metals is crucial to a plethora of applications ranging from nonlinear nanophotonics to single molecule photochemistry. The direct investigation of these highly non-equilibrium carriers requires the experimental capability of high energy resolution (~ meV) broadband femtosecond spectroscopy. When considering the ultimate limits of atomic scale structures, this capability has remained out of reach until date. Using a two color femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy, we present here the real-time tracking of hot carrier dynamics in a well-defined plasmonic picocavity, formed in the tunnel junction of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The excitation of hot carriers in the picocavity enables ultrafast all optical control over the broadband (~ eV) anti Stokes electronic resonance Raman scattering (ERRS) and the four-wave mixing (FWM) signals generated at the atomic length scale. By mapping the ERRS and FWM signals from a single graphene nanoribbon (GNR), we demonstrate that both signals are more efficiently generated along the edges of the GNR: a manifestation of atomic-scale nonlinear optical microscopy. This demonstration paves the way to the development of novel ultrafast nonlinear picophotonic platforms, affording unique opportunities in a variety of contexts, from the direct investigation of non equilibrium light matter interactions in complex quantum materials, to the development of robust strategies for hot carriers harvesting in single molecules and the next generation of active metasurfaces with deep-sub-wavelength meta-atoms.

Magnetic auto-oscillations are damping-compensated magnetization precessions. They can be generated in spin Hall nano-oscillators (SHNO) among others. Current research on these devices is dedicated to create next generation energy-efficient hardware for communication technologies. However, the underlying physics governing the formation of auto-oscillation modes, their output power and line width in a single SHNO device have remained elusive so far. We image the sources of magnetic auto-oscillations in a metallic SHNO using a single spin quantum sensor. We directly measure the microwave field generated by an auto-oscillation spot at the nanoscale by driving the electron spin resonance transition of the sensor spin, enabling faster acquisition speed (100 ms/pixel). Instead of being defined by the points of the largest antidamping only, we experimentally demonstrate for the first time with quantitative magnetometry that the auto-oscillation spots are determined by the positions of the magnetic field minima. The latter act as local potential wells for confining spin-waves, thus supporting large amplitude auto-oscillations. By comparing the magnitude of the magnetic stray field at these spots, we decipher the different frequencies of the auto-oscillation modes. The insights gained regarding the interaction between auto-oscillation modes and spin-wave potential wells enable advanced engineering of real devices.

The capability to excite, probe, and manipulate vibrational modes is essential for understanding and controlling chemical reactions at the molecular level. Recent advancements in tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopies have enabled the probing of vibrational fingerprints in a single molecule with Angstrom-scale spatial resolution. However, achieving controllable excitation of specific vibrational modes in individual molecules remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate the selective excitation and probing of vibrational modes in single deprotonated phthalocyanine molecules utilizing resonance Raman spectroscopy in a scanning tunneling microscope. Selective excitation is achieved by finely tuning the excitation wavelength of the laser to be resonant with the vibronic transitions between the molecular ground electronic state and the vibrational levels in the excited electronic state, resulting in the state-selective enhancement of the resonance Raman signal. Our approach sets the stage for steering chemical transformations in molecules on surfaces by selective excitation of molecular vibrations.

Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we experimentally and theoretically investigate isolated platinum phthalocyanine (PtPc) molecules adsorbed on atomically thin NaCl(100) vapor deposited on Au(111). We obtain good agreement between theory and constant-height STM topography. We examine why strong distortions of STM images occur as a function of distance between molecule and STM tip. The images of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) exhibit, for increasing distance, significant radial expansion due to electron propagation in the vacuum. Additionally, the imaged angular dependence is substantially distorted. The LUMO image has substantial intensity along the molecular diagonals where PtPc has no atoms. In the electronic transport gap the image differs drastically from HOMO and LUMO, even at energies very close to these orbitals. As the tunneling becomes increasingly off-resonant, the eight angular lobes of the HOMO or of the degenerate LUMOs diminish and reveal four lobes with maxima along the molecular axes, where both, HOMO and LUMO have little or no weight. These images are strongly influenced by low-lying PtPc orbitals that have simple angular structures.

The alkali halides are ionic compounds. Each alkali atom donates an electron to a halogen atom, leading to ions with full shells. The valence band is mainly located on halogen atoms, while, in a traditional picture, the conduction band is mainly located on alkali atoms. Scanning tunnelling microscopy of NaCl at 4 K actually shows that the conduction band is located on Cl$^-$ because the strong Madelung potential reverses the order of the Na$^+$ 3s and Cl$^-$ 4s levels. We verify this reversal is true for both atomically thin and bulk NaCl, and discuss implications for II-VI and I-VII compounds.

We report on scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) topographs of individual metal phthalocyanines (MPc) on a thin salt (NaCl) film on a gold substrate, at tunneling energies within the molecule's electronic transport gap. Theoretical models of increasing complexity are discussed. The calculations for MPcs adsorbed on a thin NaCl layer on Au(111) demonstrate that the STM pattern rotates with the molecule's orientations - in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Thus, even the STM topography obtained for energies in the transport gap represent the structure of a one atom thick molecule. It is shown that the electronic states inside the transport gap can be rather accurately approximated by linear combinations of bound molecular orbitals (MOs). The gap states include not only the frontier orbitals but also surprisingly large contributions from energetically much lower MOs. These results will be essential for understanding processes, such as exciton creation, which can be induced by electrons tunneling through the transport gap of a molecule.

The magnetic exchange coupling between magnetic impurities and a superconductor induce so-called Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states which undergo a quantum phase transition (QPT) upon increasing the exchange interaction beyond a critical value. While the evolution through the QPT is readily observable, in particular if the YSR state features an electron-hole asymmetry, the concomitant change in the ground state is more difficult to identify. We use ultralow temperature scanning tunneling microscopy to demonstrate how the change in the YSR ground state across the QPT can be directly observed for a spin-1/2 impurity in a magnetic field. We observe a change in the excitation spectrum from the doublet ground state in the free spin regime (two spectral features) to the singlet ground state in the screened spin regime (four spectral features). We also identify a transition regime, where the YSR excitation energy is smaller than the Zeeman energy. Coherent collective oscillations of electrons excited in metallic nanostructures (localized surface plasmons) can confine incident light to atomic scales and enable strong light-matter interactions, which depend nonlinearly on the local field. Direct sampling of such collective electron oscillations in real-time is crucial to performing petahertz scale optical modulation, control, and readout in a quantum nanodevice. Here, we demonstrate real-time tracking of collective electron oscillations in an Au bowtie nanoantenna, by recording photo-assisted tunnelling currents generated by such oscillations in this quantum nanodevice. The collective electron oscillations show a noninstantaneous response to the driving laser fields with a decay time of nearly 10 femtoseconds. The temporal evolution of nonlinear electron oscillations resulting from the coherent nonlinear optical response of the nanodevice were also traced in real-time. The contributions of linear and nonlinear electron oscillations in the generated tunnelling currents in the nanodevice were precisely determined. A coherent control of electron oscillations in the nanodevice is illustrated directly in the time domain. Functioning in ambient conditions, the excitation, coherent control, and read-out of coherent electron oscillations pave the way toward on-chip light-wave electronics in quantum nanodevices.

Quantum magnetic impurities give rise to a wealth of phenomena attracting tremendous research interest in recent years. On a normal metal, magnetic impurities generate the correlation-driven Kondo effect. On a superconductor, bound states emerge inside the superconducting gap called the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states. Theoretically, quantum impurity problems have been successfully tackled by numerical renormalization group (NRG) theory, where the Kondo and YSR physics are shown to be unified and the normalized YSR energy scales universally with the Kondo temperature divided by the superconducting gap. However, experimentally the Kondo temperature is usually extracted from phenomenological approaches, which gives rise to significant uncertainties and cannot account for magnetic fields properly. Using scanning tunneling microscopy at 10mK, we apply a magnetic field to several YSR impurities on a vanadium tip to reveal the Kondo effect and employ the microscopic single impurity Anderson model with NRG to fit the Kondo spectra in magnetic fields accurately and extract the corresponding Kondo temperature unambiguously. Some YSR states move across the quantum phase transition (QPT) due to the changes in atomic forces during tip approach, yielding a continuous universal scaling with quantitative precision for quantum spin-1/2 impurities., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, including supplementary information

The motion of atoms is at the heart of any chemical or structural transformation in molecules and materials. Upon activation of this motion by an external source, several (usually many) vibrational modes can be coherently coupled, thus facilitating the chemical or structural phase transformation. These coherent dynamics occur on the ultrafast time scale, as revealed, e.g., by nonlocal ultrafast vibrational spectroscopic measurements in bulk molecular ensembles and solids. Tracking and controlling vibrational coherences locally at the atomic and molecular scales is, however, much more challenging and in fact has remained elusive so far. Here, we demonstrate that the vibrational coherences induced by broadband laser pulses on a single graphene nanoribbon (GNR) can be probed by femtosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) when performed in a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). In addition to determining dephasing (~ 440 fs) and population decay times (~1.8 ps) of the generated phonon wave packets, we are able to track and control the corresponding quantum coherences, which we show to evolve on time scales as short as ~ 70 fs. We demonstrate that a two-dimensional frequency correlation spectrum unequivocally reveals the quantum couplings between different phonon modes in the GNR., Comment: 18 pages

Strongly interacting electrons in layered materials give rise to a plethora of emergent phenomena, such as unconventional superconductivity. heavy fermions, and spin textures with non-trivial topology. Similar effects can also be observed in bulk materials, but the advantage of two dimensional (2D) systems is the combination of local accessibility by microscopic techniques and tuneability. In stacks of 2D materials, for example, the twist angle can be employed to tune their properties. However, while material choice and twist angle are global parameters, the full complexity and potential of such correlated 2D electronic lattices will only reveal itself when tuning their parameters becomes possible on the level of individual lattice sites. Here, we discover a lattice of strongly correlated electrons in a perfectly ordered 2D supramolecular network by driving this system through a cascade of quantum phase transitions using a movable atomically sharp electrostatic gate. As the gate field is increased, the molecular building blocks change from a Kondo-screened to a paramagnetic phase one-by-one, enabling us to reconstruct their complex interactions in detail. We anticipate that the supramolecular nature of the system will in future allow to engineer quantum correlations in arbitrary patterned structures.

Transport through quantum coherent conductors, like atomic junctions, is described by the distribution of conduction channels. Information about the number of channels and their transmission can be extracted from various sources, such as multiple Andreev reflections, dynamical Coulomb blockade, or shot noise. We complement this set of methods by introducing the superconducting excess current as a new tool to continuously extract the transport channel transmissions of an atomic scale junction in a scanning tunneling microscope. In conjunction with ab initio simulations, we employ this technique in atomic aluminum junctions to determine the influence of the structure adjacent to the contact atoms on the transport properties., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, including supporting information

Full experimental control of local spin-charge interconversion is of primary interest for spintronics. Heterostructures combining graphene with a strongly spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional (2D) material enable such functionality by design. Electric spin valve experiments have provided so far global information on such devices, while leaving the local interplay between symmetry breaking, charge flow across the heterointerface and aspects of topology unexplored. Here, we utilize magneto-optical Kerr microscopy to resolve the gate-tunable, local current-induced spin polarisation in graphene/WTe$_2$ van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures. It turns out that even for a nominal in-plane transport, substantial out-of-plane spin accumulation is induced by a corresponding out-of-plane current flow. We develop a theoretical model which explains the gate- and bias-dependent onset and spatial distribution of the massive Kerr signal on the basis of interlayer tunnelling, along with the reduced point group symmetry and inherent Berry curvature of the heterostructure. Our findings unravel the potential of 2D heterostructure engineering for harnessing topological phenomena for spintronics, and constitute an important further step toward electrical spin control on the nanoscale., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We study fluctuations in plasmonic electroluminescence at the single-atom limit profiting from the precision of a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. First, we investigate the influence of a controlled single-atom transfer on the plasmonic properties of the junction. Next, we form a well-defined atomic contact of several quanta of conductance. In contact, we observe changes of the electroluminescence intensity that can be assigned to spontaneous modifications of electronic conductance, plasmonic excitation and optical antenna properties all originating from minute atomic rearrangements at or near the contact. The observations are relevant for the understanding of processes leading to spontaneous intensity variations in plasmon-enhanced atomic-scale spectroscopies.

Light sources on the scale of single molecules can be addressed and characterized on their proper sub-nanometer scale by scanning tunneling microscopy induced luminescence (STML). Such a source can be driven by defined short charge pulses while the luminescence is detected with sub-nanosecond resolution. We introduce an approach to concurrently image the molecular emitter, which is based on an individual defect, with its local environment along with its luminescence dynamics at a resolution of a billion frames per second. The observed dynamics can be assigned to the single electron capture occurring in the low-nanosecond regime. While the emitter's location on the surface remains fixed, the scanning of the tip modifies the energy landscape for charge injection to the defect. The principle of measurement is extendable to fundamental processes beyond charge transfer like exciton diffusion.

Magnetic impurities on superconductors induce discrete bound levels inside the superconducting gap, known as Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states. YSR levels are fully spin-polarized such that the tunneling between YSR states depends on their relative spin orientation. Here, we use scanning tunneling spectroscopy to resolve the spin dynamics in the tunneling process between two YSR states by experimentally extracting the angle between the spins. To this end, we exploit the ratio of thermally activated and direct spectral features in the measurement to directly extract the relative spin orientation between the two YSR states. We find freely rotating spins down to 7mK, indicating a purely paramagnetic nature of the impurities. Such a non-collinear spin alignment is essential not only for producing Majorana bound states but also as an outlook manipulating and moving the Majorana state onto the tip., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, including supplementary material

The wavefunctions of a disordered two-dimensional electron gas at the quantum-critical Anderson transition are predicted to exhibit multifractal scaling in their real space amplitude. We experimentally investigate the appearance of these characteristics in the spatially resolved local density of states of a two-dimensional mixed surface alloy Bi_xPb_{1-x}/Ag(111), by combining high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy with spin and angle-resolved inverse-photoemission experiments. Our detailed knowledge of the surface alloy electronic band structure, the exact lattice structure and the atomically resolved local density of states enables us to construct a realistic Anderson tight binding model of the mixed surface alloy, and to directly compare the measured local density of states characteristics with those from our model calculations. The statistical analyses of these two-dimensional local density of states maps reveal their log-normal distributions and multifractal scaling characteristics of the underlying wavefunctions with a finite anomalous scaling exponent. Finally, our experimental results confirm theoretical predictions of an exact scaling symmetry for Anderson quantum phase transitions in the Wigner-Dyson classes., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

The induction of unconventional superconductivity by twisting two layers of graphene a small angle was groundbreaking1, and since then has attracted widespread attention to novel phenomena caused by lattice or angle mismatch between two-dimensional (2D) materials2. While many studies address the influence of angle mismatch between layered 2D materials3-5 , the impact of the absorption alignment on the physical properties of planar molecules on 2D substrates has not been studied in detail. Using scanning probe microscopy (SPM) we show that individual cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) molecules adsorbed on the layered superconductor 2H-NbSe2 change drastically their charge and spin state when the symmetry axes of the molecule and the substrate are twisted with respect to each other. The CoPc changes from an effective spin-1/2 as found in gas-phase6 to a molecule with non-magnetic ground-state. On the latter we observe a singlet-triplet transition originating from an antiferromagnetic interaction between the central-ion spin and a distributed magnetic moment on the molecular ligands. Because the Ising superconductor 2H-NbSe2 lacks inversion symmetry and has large spin-orbit coupling7 this intramolecular magnetic exchange has significant non-collinear Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM)8, 9 contribution., Comment: 4 figures

Using electrospray ion beam deposition, we collide the complex molecule Reichardt's Dye (C41H30NO+) at low, hyperthermal translational energy (2-50 eV) with a Cu(100) surface and image the outcome at single-molecule level by scanning tunneling microscopy. We observe bond-selective reaction induced by the translational kinetic energy. The collision impulse compresses the molecule and bends specific bonds, prompting them to react selectively. This dynamics drives the system to seek thermally inaccessible reactive pathways, since the compression timescale (sub-ps) is much shorter than the thermalization timescale (ns), thereby yielding reaction products that are unobtainable thermally.

Despite plenty of room at the bottom, there is a limit to the miniaturization of every process. For charge transport this is realized by the coupling of single discrete energy levels at the atomic scale. Here, we demonstrate sequential tunneling between parity protected Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states bound to magnetic impurities located on the superconducting tip and sample of a scanning tunneling microscope at 10 mK. We reduce the relaxation of the excited YSR state to the bare minimum and find an enhanced lifetime for single quasiparticle levels. Our work offers a way to characterize and to manipulate coupled superconducting bound states, such as Andreev levels, YSR states, or Majorana bound states., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures incl. supplementary information

Spin-dependent scattering from magnetic impurities inside a superconductor gives rise to Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states within the superconducting gap. As such, YSR states have been very successfully modeled with an effective scattering potential (Kondo impurity model). Using a scanning tunneling microscope, we exploit the proximity of the tip to a surface impurity and its influence on the YSR state to make a quantitative connection between the YSR state energy and the impurity-substrate hybridization. We corroborate the coupling between impurity and substrate as a key energy scale for surface derived YSR states using the Anderson impurity model in the mean field approximation, which accurately explains our observations. The model allows to decide on which side of the quantum phase transition the system resides based on additional conductance measurements. We propose that the Anderson impurity model is much more appropriate to describe YSR states from impurities on a superconducting surface than the Kondo impurity model, which is more appropriate for impurities inside a superconductor. We thus provide a first step towards a more quantitative comparison of experimental data with fully correlated calculations based on the Anderson impurity model., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, including supplementary material

Quantum fluctuations are imprinted with valuable information about transport processes. Experimental access to this information is possible, but challenging. We introduce the dynamical Coulomb blockade (DCB) as a local probe for fluctuations in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and show that it provides information about the conduction channels. In agreement with theoretical predictions, we find that the DCB disappears in a single-channel junction with increasing transmission following the Fano factor, analogous to what happens with shot noise. Furthermore we demonstrate local differences in the DCB expected from changes in the conduction channel configuration. Our experimental results are complemented by ab initio transport calculations that elucidate the microscopic nature of the conduction channels in our atomic-scale contacts. We conclude that probing the DCB by STM provides a technique complementary to shot noise measurements for locally resolving quantum transport characteristics., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, including supplementary material

A hallmark of quantum control is the ability to manipulate quantum emission at the nanoscale. Through scanning tunneling microscopy induced luminescence (STML) we are able to generate plasmonic light originating from inelastic tunneling processes that occur in a few-nanometer thick molecular film of C$_{60}$ deposited on Ag(111). Single photon emission, not of excitonic origin, occurs with a 1/$e$ lifetime of a tenth of a nanosecond or less, as shown through Hanbury Brown and Twiss photon intensity interferometry. We have performed tight-binding calculations of the electronic structure for the combined Ag-C$_{60}$-tip system and obtained good agreement with experiment. The tunneling happens through electric field induced split-off states below the C$_{60}$ LUMO band, which leads to a Coulomb blockade effect and single photon emission. The use of split-off states is shown to be a general technique that has special relevance for narrowband materials with a large bandgap.

Proximity effects induced in the 2D Dirac material graphene potentially open access to novel and intriguing physical phenomena. Thus far, the coupling between graphene and ferromagnetic insulators has been experimentally established. However, only very little is known about graphene's interaction with antiferromagnetic insulators. Here, we report a low temperature study of the electronic properties of high quality van der Waals heterostructures composed of a single graphene layer proximitized with $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$. The latter is known to become antiferromagnetically ordered below 10 K. Shubnikov de Haas oscillations in the longitudinal resistance together with Hall resistance measurements provide clear evidence for a band realignment that is accompanied by a transfer of electrons originally occupying the graphene's spin degenerate Dirac cones into $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ band states with in-plane spin polarization. Left behind are holes in two separate Fermi pockets, only the dispersion of one of which is distorted near the Fermi energy due to spin selective hybridization with these spin polarized $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ band states. This interpretation is supported by our DFT calculations. An unexpected damping of the quantum oscillations as well as a zero field resistance upturn close to the N$\'e$el temperature of $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ suggests the onset of additional spin scattering due to spin fluctuations in the $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$.

The Josephson effect in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is an excellent tool to probe the properties of the superconducting order parameter on a local scale through the Ambegaokar-Baratoff (AB) relation. Using single atomic contacts created by means of atom manipulation, we demonstrate that in the extreme case of a single transport channel through the atomic junction modifications of the current-phase relation lead to significant deviations from the linear AB formula relating the critical current to the involved gap parameters. Using the full current-phase relation for arbitrary channel transmission, we model the Josephson effect in the dynamical Coulomb blockade regime because the charging energy of the junction capacitance cannot be neglected. We find excellent agreement with the experimental data. Projecting the current-phase relation onto the charge transfer operator shows that at high transmission multiple Cooper pair tunneling may occur. Photon statistics is a powerful tool for characterizing the emission dynamics of nanoscopic systems and their photophysics. Recent advances that combine correlation spectroscopy with scanning tunneling microscopy-induced luminescence (STML) have allowed measuring the emission dynamics from individual molecules and defects demonstrating their nature as single photon emitters. The application of correlation spectroscopy to the analysis of the dynamics of a well-characterized adsorbate system in ultrahigh vacuum remained to be shown. Here we combine single photon time correlations with STML to measure the dynamics of individual $H_2$ molecules between a gold tip and a Au(111) surface. An adsorbed $H_2$ molecule performs recurrent excursions below the tip apex. We use the fact that the presence of the $H_2$ molecule in the junction modifies plasmon emission to study the adsorbate dynamics. Using the $H_2$ molecule as a chopper for STM-induced optical emission intensity we demonstrate bunching in the plasmonic photon train in a single measurement over six orders of magnitude in the time domain (from microseconds to seconds) that takes only a few seconds. We investigate the spatial evolution of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states resulting from the interaction between Copper phthalocyanine molecules and a superconducting Vanadium (100) surface with submolecular resolution. Each molecule creates several YSR states at different energies showing distinctly different spatial intensity patterns. Surprisingly, on the molecules the largest YSR intensities are found not at the metal center, but close to one of the pyrrolic N-atoms, demonstrating strong molecular substrate interactions via the organic ligands. Energy resolved YSR maps reveal that the different YSR states originate from different molecular orbitals. We also follow the YSR states well-beyond the extent of the molecules and find clear oscillations of the YSR intensities without strong particle hole scattering phase differences. This is in contrast to expectations from a point scattering model and recent experimental findings on atomic impurities on superconductors. Our results can be explained by treating the molecular system as extended scatterer. Our findings provide new insights that are crucial to interpret the effects of a variety of magnetic systems on superconductors, in particular also those discussed in the context of Majorana bound states, which because of their size can not be considered point like as well.

Generating correlated photon pairs at the nanoscale is a prerequisite to creating highly integrated optoelectronic circuits that perform quantum computing tasks based on heralded single-photons. Here we demonstrate fulfilling this requirement with a generic tip-surface metal junction. When the junction is luminescing under DC bias, inelastic tunneling events of single electrons produce a photon stream in the visible spectrum whose super-bunching index is 17 when measured with a 53 picosecond instrumental resolution limit. These photon bunches contain true photon pairs of plasmonic origin, distinct from accidental photon coincidences. The effect is electrically rather than optically driven - completely absent are pulsed lasers, down-conversions, and four-wave mixing schemes. This discovery has immediate and profound implications for quantum optics and cryptography, notwithstanding its fundamental importance to basic science and its ushering in of heralded photon experiments on the nanometer scale.

Excitons and their constituent charge carriers play the central role in electroluminescence mechanisms determining the ultimate performance of organic optoelectronic devices. The involved processes and their dynamics are often studied with time-resolved techniques limited by spatial averaging that obscures the properties of individual electron-hole pairs. Here we overcome this limit and characterize single charge and exciton dynamics at the nanoscale by using time-resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy-induced luminescence (TR-STML) stimulated with nanosecond voltage pulses. We use isolated defects in C$_{60}$ thin films as a model system into which we inject single charges and investigate the formation dynamics of a single exciton. Tuneable hole and electron injection rates are obtained from a kinetic model that reproduces the measured electroluminescent transients. These findings demonstrate that TR-STML can track dynamics at the quantum limit of single charge injection and can be extended to other systems and materials important for nanophotonic devices.

Robust quantum systems rely on having a protective environment with minimized relaxation channels. Superconducting gaps play an important role in the design of such environments. The interaction of localized single spins with a conventional superconductor generally leads to intrinsically extremely narrow Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) resonances protected inside the superconducting gap. However, this may not apply to superconductors with nontrivial, energy dependent order parameters. Exploiting the Fe-doped two-band superconductor NbSe$_2$, we show that due to the nontrivial relation between its complex valued and energy dependent order parameters, YSR states are no longer restricted to be inside the gap. They can appear outside the gap (i. e. inside the coherence peaks), where they can also acquire a substantial intrinsic lifetime broadening. T-matrix scattering calculations show excellent agreement with the experimental data and relate the intrinsic YSR state broadening to the imaginary part of the host's order parameters. Our results suggest that non-thermal relaxation mechanisms contribute to the finite lifetime of the YSR states, even within the superconducting gap, making them less protected against residual interactions than previously assumed. Josephson junctions operated in the dynamical Coulomb blockade regime recently gained an significant amount of attention as central building block in concepts to demonstrate the non-Abelian character of Majorana fermions. Its physical properties are strongly affected by the intimate interplay of intrinsic quantum fluctuations and environmentally-induced quantum fluctuations each of which promoting different Cooper pair transport mechanisms at small voltages around zero. To shed light on the detailed transport mechanisms occurring in this type of junction, we performed voltage-biased measurements on the small-capacitance Josephson junction of a scanning tunneling microscope at milli-Kelvin temperatures. The low voltage-regime of experimental current-voltage characteristics can be modeled by the two complementary descriptions of phase coherent and incoherent Cooper pair transport, signaling the occurrence of qualitatively different transport mechanisms. This observation receives further support from analyzing the calculated Fano factor of the current noise as a probe for correlations in Cooper pair transport, following a theoretical proposal. Together our experimental observations and related data analysis provide a clear signature of coherent Cooper pair transport along with the absence of perfect charge quantized transport around zero voltage, as well as of incoherent Cooper pair transport towards higher voltages.

Three-dimensional topological insulators are a class of Dirac materials, wherein strong spin-orbit coupling leads to two-dimensional surface states. The latter feature spin-momentum locking, i.e., each momentum vector is associated with a spin locked perpendicularly to it in the surface plane. While the principal spin generation capability of topological insulators is well established, comparatively little is known about the interaction of the spins with external stimuli like polarized light. We observe a helical, bias-dependent photoconductance at the lateral edges of topological Bi2Te2Se platelets for perpendicular incidence of light. The same edges exhibit also a finite bias-dependent Kerr angle, indicative of spin accumulation induced by a transversal spin Hall effect in the bulk states of the Bi2Te2Se platelets. A symmetry analysis shows that the helical photoconductance is distinct to common longitudinal photoconductance and photocurrent phenomena, but consistent with the accumulated spins being transported in the side facets of the platelets. Our findings demonstrate that spin effects in the facets of 3D topological insulators can be addressed and read-out in optoelectronic devices even at room temperatures.

Scalable quantum technologies will require an unprecedented combination of precision and complexity for designing stable structures of well-controllable quantum systems. It is a challenging task to find a suitable elementary building block, of which a quantum network can be comprised in a scalable way. Here we present the working principle of such a basic unit, engineered using molecular chemistry, whose control and readout are executed using a nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in diamond. The basic unit we investigate is a synthetic polyproline with electron spins localized on attached molecular sidegroups separated by a few nanometers. We demonstrate the readout and coherent manipulation of very few ($\leq 6 $) of these $S=1/2$ electronic spin systems and access their direct dipolar coupling tensor. Our results show, that it is feasible to use spin-labeled peptides as a resource for a molecular-qubit based network, while at the same time providing simple optical readout of single quantum states through NV-magnetometry. We have studied the temporal evolution of a quantum system subjected to strong dissipation at ultra-low temperatures where the system-bath interaction represents the leading energy scale. In this regime, theory predicts the time evolution of the system to follow a generalization of the classical Smoluchowski description, the quantum Smoluchowski equation, thus, exhibiting quantum Brownian motion characteristics. For this purpose, we have investigated the phase dynamics of a superconducting tunnel junction in the presence of high damping. We performed current-biased measurements on the small-capacitance Josephson junction of a scanning tunneling microscope placed in a low impedance environment at milli-Kelvin temperatures. We can describe our experimental findings by a quantum diffusion model with high accuracy in agreement with theoretical predications based on the quantum Smoluchowski equation. In this way we experimentally demonstrate that quantum systems subjected to strong dissipation follow quasi-classical dynamics with significant quantum effects as the leading corrections., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Spin-bearing molecules can be stabilized on surfaces and in junctions with desirable properties such as a net spin that can be adjusted by external stimuli. Using scanning probes, initial and final spin states can be deduced from topographic or spectroscopic data, but how the system transitioned between these states is largely unknown. Here we address this question by manipulating the total spin of magnetic cobalt hydride complexes on a corrugated boron nitride surface with a hydrogen- functionalized scanning probe tip by simultaneously tracking force and conductance. When the additional hydrogen ligand is brought close to the cobalt monohydride, switching between a corre- lated S = 1 /2 Kondo state, where host electrons screen the magnetic moment, and a S = 1 state with magnetocrystalline anisotropy is observed. We show that the total spin changes when the system is transferred onto a new potential energy surface defined by the position of the hydrogen in the junction. These results show how and why chemically functionalized tips are an effective tool to manipulate adatoms and molecules, and a promising new method to selectively tune spin systems.

Correlation is a fundamental statistical measure of order in interacting quantum systems. In solids, electron correlations govern a diverse array of material classes and phenomena such as heavy fermion compounds, Hunds metals, high-Tc superconductors, and the Kondo effect. Spin-spin correlations, notably investigated by Kaufman and Onsager in the 1940s 6, are at the foundation of numerous theoretical models but are challenging to measure experimentally. Reciprocal space methods can map correlations, but at the single atom limit new experimental probes are needed. Here, we determine the correlations between a strongly hybridized spin impurity and its electron bath by varying the coupling to a second magnetic impurity in the junction of a scanning tunneling microscope. Electronic transport through these coupled spins reveals an asymmetry in the differential conductance reminiscent of spin-polarized transport in a magnetic field. We show that at zero field, this asymmetry can be controlled by the coupling strength and is directly related to either ferromagnetic (FM) or antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin-spin correlations., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Imaging single proteins has been a long-standing ambition for advancing various fields in natural science, as for instance structural biology, biophysics and molecular nanotechnology. In particular, revealing the distinct conformations of an individual protein is of utmost importance. Here, we show the imaging of individual proteins and protein complexes by low-energy electron holography. Samples of individual proteins and protein complexes on ultraclean freestanding graphene were prepared by soft-landing electrospray ion beam deposition, which allows chemical- and conformational-specific selection and gentle deposition. Low-energy electrons do not induce radiation damage, which enables acquiring sub-nanometer resolution images of individual proteins (cytochrome C and bovine serum albumin) as well as of protein complexes (hemoglobin), which are not the result of an averaging process.
