A single spin in a Josephson junction can reverse the flow of the supercurrent. At mesoscopic length scales, such $\pi$-junctions are employed in various instances from finding the pairing symmetry to quantum computing. In Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states, the atomic scale counterpart of a single spin in a superconducting tunnel junction, the supercurrent reversal so far has remained elusive. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we demonstrate such a 0 to $\pi$ transition of a Josephson junction through a YSR state as we continuously change the impurity-superconductor coupling. We detect the sign change in the critical current by exploiting a second transport channel as reference in analogy to a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), which provides the STM with the required phase sensitivity. Microscopic studies on thin film superconductors play an important role for probing non-equilibrium phase transitions and revealing dynamics at the nanoscale. However, magnetic sensors with nanometer scale spatial and picosecond temporal resolution are essential for exploring these. Here, we present an all-optical, microwave-free method, that utilizes the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond as a non-invasive quantum sensor and enables the spatial detection of the Meissner state in a superconducting thin film. We place an NV implanted diamond membrane on a superconducting LSCO thin film. The strong B-field dependence of the NV photoluminescence (PL) allows us to investigate the Meissner screening in LSCO under an externally applied magnetic field in a non-resonant manner.

The understanding of the antineutrino production in fission and the theoretical calculation of their energy spectra in different types of fission reactors rely on the application of the summation method, where the individual contributions from the different radioactive nuclides that undergo a beta decay are estimated and summed up. The most accurate estimation of the independent fission-product yields is essential to this calculation. We have coupled for the first time the predictions of the general fission model GEF for the fission yields to fission-product beta-decay data in a summation calculation of reactor antineutrino energy spectra. The first comparisons performed between the spectra from GEF and those obtained with the evaluated nuclear databases exhibited large discrepancies that highlighted the exigency of the modelisation of the antineutrino spectra and showing their usefulness in the evaluation of nuclear data. Additional constraints for the GEF model were thus needed in order to reach the level of accuracy required. The quality of different sources of information on the fission yields has been investigated with GEF, and the benefit of a combined analysis is demonstrated. The quality of fission yields emerging from different experimental techniques has been analyzed and indications for shortcomings of mass yields for some of the studied fissioning systems were provided. The combination of a careful study of the independent isotopic yields and the adjunction of the LOHENGRIN fission-yield data as additional constraints led to a substantially improved agreement between the antineutrino spectra computed with GEF and with the evaluated data. The comparison of inverse beta-decay yields computed with GEF with those measured by the Daya Bay experiment shows the excellent level of predictiveness of the GEF model for the fundamental or applied antineutrino physics., Comment: 88 pages, 100 figures

Among all transition metals, Palladium (Pd) has the highest density of states at the Fermi energy yet does not fulfill the Stoner criterion for ferromagnetism. However, its close vicinity to magnetism renders it a nearly ferromagnetic metal, which hosts paramagnons, strongly damped spin fluctuations. In this letter we compare the total and the differential conductance of mono-atomic Pd and Cobalt (Co) contacts between Pd electrodes. Transport measurements reveal a conductance for Co of 1 $G_0$ , while for Pd we obtain 2 $G_0$. The differential conductance of mono-atomic Pd contacts shows a drop with increasing bias, which gives rise to a peculiar {$\Lambda$}-shaped spectrum. Supported by theoretical calculations we correlate this finding with the life time of hot quasi-particles in Pd which is strongly influenced by paramagnon scattering. In contrast to this, Co adatoms locally induce magnetic order and transport through single cobalt atoms remains unaffected by paramagnon scattering, consistent with theory., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Materials with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) have in recent years become a subject of intense research due to their potential applications in spintronics and quantum information technology. In particular, in systems which break inversion symmetry, SOC facilitates the Rashba-Dresselhaus effect, leading to a lifting of spin degeneracy in the bulk and intricate spin textures of the Bloch wave functions. Here, by combining angular resolved photoemission (ARPES) and low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements with relativistic first-principles band structure calculations, we examine the role of SOC in single crystals of noncentrosymmetric BiPd. We report the detection of several Dirac surface states, one of which exhibits an extremely large spin splitting. Unlike the surface states in inversion-symmetric systems, the Dirac surface states of BiPd have completely different properties at opposite faces of the crystal and are not trivially linked by symmetry. The spin-splitting of the surface states exhibits a strong anisotropy by itself, which can be linked to the low in-plane symmetry of the surface termination., Comment: 6 page letter, + supplementary material

Electronic devices based on graphene technology are catching on rapidly and the ability to engineer graphene properties at the nanoscale is becoming, more than ever, indispensable. Here, we present a new procedure of graphene functionalization on SiC(0001) that paves the way towards the fabrication of complex graphene electronic chips. The procedure resides on the well-known ion-implantation technique. The efficiency of the working principle is demonstrated by the intercalation of the epitaxial graphene layer on SiC(0001) with Bi atoms, which was not possible following standard procedures. Our results put forward the ion-beam lithography to nanostructure and functionalize desired graphene chips.

The electronic configurations of Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu adatoms on graphene and graphite have been studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and charge transfer multiplet theory. A delicate interplay between long-range interactions and local chemical bonding is found to influence the adatom equilibrium distance and magnetic moment. The results for Fe and Co are consistent with purely physisorbed species having, however, different 3$d$-shell occupancies on graphene and graphite ($d^{n+1}$ and $d^n$, respectively). On the other hand, for the late 3$d$ metals Ni and Cu a trend towards chemisorption is found, which strongly quenches the magnetic moment on both substrates., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate the occurrence of compensated spin configurations in Fe clusters and monolayers on Ru(0001) and Rh(111) by a combination of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism experiments and first-principles calculations. Our results reveal complex intra-cluster exchange interactions which depend strongly on the substrate 4$d$-band filling, the cluster geometry as well as lateral and vertical structural relaxations. The importance of substrate 4$d$-band filling manifests itself also in small nearest-neighbor exchange interactions in Fe dimers and in an nearly inverted trend of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida coupling constants for Fe adatoms on the Ru and Rh surface.

The nature of the Dirac quasiparticles in topological insulators calls for a direct investigation of the electron-phonon scattering at the \emph{surface}. By comparing time-resolved ARPES measurements of the TI Bi_{2}Se_{3} with different probing depths we show that the relaxation dynamics of the electronic temperature of the conduction band is much slower at the surface than in the bulk. This observation suggests that surface phonons are less effective in cooling the electron gas in the conduction band., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We study the band structure of the $\text{Bi}_2\text{Se}_3$ topological insulator (111) surface using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We examine the situation where two sets of quantized subbands exhibiting different Rashba spin-splitting are created via bending of the conduction (CB) and the valence (VB) bands at the surface. While the CB subbands are strongly Rashba spin-split, the VB subbands do not exhibit clear spin-splitting. We find that CB and VB experience similar band bending magnitudes, which means, a spin-splitting discrepancy due to different surface potential gradients can be excluded. On the other hand, by comparing the experimental band structure to first principles LMTO band structure calculations, we find that the strongly spin-orbit coupled Bi 6$p$ orbitals dominate the orbital character of CB, whereas their admixture to VB is rather small. The spin-splitting discrepancy is, therefore, traced back to the difference in spin-orbit coupling between CB and VB in the respective subbands' regions.

We exploit time- and angle- resolved photoemission spectroscopy to determine the evolution of the out-of-equilibrium electronic structure of the topological insulator Bi2Se. The response of the Fermi-Dirac distribution to ultrashort IR laser pulses has been studied by modelling the dynamics of the hot electrons after optical excitation. We disentangle a large increase of the effective temperature T* from a shift of the chemical potential mu*, which is consequence of the ultrafast photodoping of the conduction band. The relaxation dynamics of T* and mu* are k-independent and these two quantities uniquely define the evolution of the excited charge population. We observe that the energy dependence of the non-equilibrium charge population is solely determined by the analytical form of the effective Fermi-Dirac distribution., Comment: 5 Pages, 3 Figures

Pseudospin, an additional degree of freedom related to the honeycomb structure of graphene, is responsible of many of the outstanding electronic properties found in this material. This article provides a clear understanding of how such pseudospin impacts the quasiparticle interferences of monolayer (ML) and bilayer (BL) graphene measured by low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We have used this technique to map, with very high energy and space resolution, the spatial modulations of the local density of states of ML and BL graphene epitaxialy grown on SiC(0001), in presence of native disorder. We perform a Fourier transform analysis of such modulations including wavevectors up to unit-vectors of the reciprocal lattice. Our data demonstrate that the quasiparticle interferences associated to some particular scattering processes are suppressed in ML graphene, but not in BL graphene. Most importantly, interferences with 2qF wavevector associated to intravalley backscattering are not measured in ML graphene, even on the images with highest resolution. In order to clarify the role of the pseudospin on the quasiparticle interferences, we use a simple model which nicely captures the main features observed on our data. The model unambiguously shows that graphene's pseudospin is responsible for such suppression of quasiparticle interferences features in ML graphene, in particular for those with 2qF wavevector. It also confirms scanning tunneling microscopy as a unique technique to probe the pseudospin in graphene samples in real space with nanometer precision. Finally, we show that such observations are robust with energy and obtain with great accuracy the dispersion of the \pi-bands for both ML and BL graphene in the vicinity of the Fermi level, extracting their main tight binding parameters.

We observe a giant spin-orbit splitting in bulk and surface states of the non-centrosymmetric semiconductor BiTeI. We show that the Fermi level can be placed in the valence or in the conduction band by controlling the surface termination. In both cases it intersects spin-polarized bands, in the corresponding surface depletion and accumulation layers. The momentum splitting of these bands is not affected by adsorbate-induced changes in the surface potential. These findings demonstrate that two properties crucial for enabling semiconductor-based spin electronics -- a large, robust spin splitting and ambipolar conduction -- are present in this material., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The robustness of the gapless topological surface state hosted by a 3D topological insulator against perturbations of magnetic origin has been the focus of recent investigations. We present a comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of Fe impurities on a prototypical 3D topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ using local low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and integral x-ray magnetic circular dichroism techniques. Single Fe adatoms on the Bi$_2$Se$_3$ surface, in the coverage range $\approx 1%$ are heavily relaxed into the surface and exhibit a magnetic easy axis within the surface-plane, contrary to what was assumed in recent investigations on the opening of a gap. We present the manipulation of magnetic and electrical properties of (Ga,Mn)As by the adsorption of dye-molecules as a first step towards the realization of light-controlled magnetic-semiconductor/dye hybrid devices. A significant lowering of the Curie temperature with a corresponding increase in electrical resistance and a higher coercive field is found for the GaMnAs/fluorescein system with respect to (Ga,Mn)As. Upon exposure to visible light a shift in Curie temperature towards higher values and a reduction of the coercive field can be achieved in photo-sensitized (Ga,Mn)As. A mayor change in the XPS spectrum of (Ga,Mn)As indicates the appearance of occupied levels in the energy range corresponding to the (Ga,Mn)As valence band states upon adsorption of fluorescein. This points towards a hole quenching effect at the molecule-(Ga,Mn)As interface which is susceptible to light exposure., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The growth dynamics of submonolayer coverages of Cobalt during buffer layer assisted growth on Ag(111) and Pt(111) substrates is investigated by variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy in the temperature range between 80 and 150 Kelvin. It is found that attractive cluster-substrate interactions can govern the cluster formation on the Xe buffer layer, if the Xe layer is sufficiently thin. The interpretation of the microscopy results are supported by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism which monitors the effect of cluster-substrate interactions on the formation of magnetic moments and magnetic anisotropy of Co nanocluster during the different stages of growth. {\it Ab-initio} calculations show that the cluster magnetism is controlled by the interface anisotropy, leading to perpendicular magnetization for Co on Pt(111). Extensive Kerr microscopy studies reveal a strongly temperature dependent domain wall dynamics in Hall-bars made from compressively strained GaMnAs. Depending on the temperature magnetic charging of domain walls is observed and nucleation rates depend on the Hall-geometry with respect to the crystal axes. Above a critical temperature where a biaxial-to-uniaxial anisotropy transition occurs a drastic increase of nucleation events is observed. Below this temperature, the nucleation of domains tends to be rather insensitive to temperature. This first spatially resolved study of domain wall dynamics in patterned GaMnAs at variable temperatures has important implications for potential single domain magneto-logic devices made from ferromagnetic semiconductors., Comment: Figures 2 and 6 not correctly TeXified

We demonstrate the induction of a giant Rashba-type spin-splitting on a semiconducting substrate by means of a Bi trimer adlayer on a Si(111) wafer. The in-plane inversion symmetry is broken so that the in-plane potential gradient induces a giant spin-splitting with a Rashba energy of about 140 meV, which is more than an order of magnitude larger than what has previously been reported for any semiconductor heterostructure. The separation of the electronic states is larger than their lifetime broadening, which has been directly observed with angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental results are confirmed by relativistic first-principles calculations. We envision important implications for basic phenomena as well as for the semiconductor based technology.

Graphene exhibits unconventional two-dimensional electronic properties resulting from the symmetry of its quasiparticles, which leads to the concepts of pseudospin and electronic chirality. Here we report that scanning tunneling microscopy can be used to probe these unique symmetry properties at the nanometer scale. They are reflected in the quantum interference pattern resulting from elastic scattering off impurities, and they can be directly read from its fast Fourier transform. Our data, complemented by theoretical calculations, demonstrate that the pseudospin and the electronic chirality in epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) correspond to the ones predicted for ideal graphene., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, minor changes

The domain wall induced reversal dynamics in compressively strained GaMnAs was studied employing the magneto-optical Kerr effect and Kerr microscopy. Due to the influence of an uniaxial part in the in-plane magnetic anisotropy (90+/-Delta) domain walls with considerably different dynamic behavior are observed. While the (90+Delta) reversal is identified to be propagation dominated with a small number of domain walls, the case of (90-Delta) reversal includes the nucleation of many domain walls. The domain wall nucleation/propagation energy for both transitions are estimated using model calculations from which we conclude that single domain devices can be achievable using the (90+Delta) mode., Comment: 4 figures

The magnetism of quench-condensed Ru and Rh impurities and metal films on Ag(100) and Pt(997) has been studied using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. In the coverage range between 0.22 ML and 2.0 ML no dichroic signal was detected at the M3,2 absorption edges of Ru on Ag(100) at a temperature of 5 K in the presence of an applied magnetic field. The same was found for coverages between 0.12 ML and 0.5 ML of Rh on Ag(100) and Pt(997). It is concluded that the magnetic moments of single impurities, small clusters of various shape and monolayers of the 4d metals are below the detection limit of 0.04 muB per atom. These results provide an unambiguous determination of the local magnetic moment of Ru and Rh deposited on nonmagnetic transition-metal surfaces, which are in contrast with theoretical predictions.

Spatially resolved photocurrent measurements on carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNFETs) operated in various transport regimes are reported. It is demonstrated that the photocurrents measured at different biasing conditions provide access to the electronic band structure profile of the nanotube channel. A comparison of the profiles with the device switched into n- or p-type states clearly evidences the impact of chemical doping from the ambient. Moreover, we show that scanning photocurrent microscopy constitutes an effective and facile technique for the quantitative determination of the Schottky barrier height in such devices., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We present results of magnetic torque calculations using the fully relativistic spin-polarized Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker approach applied to small Co and Fe clusters deposited on the Pt(111) surface. From the magnetic torque one can derive among others the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE). It was found that this approach is numerically much more stable and also computationally less demanding than using the magnetic force theorem that allows to calculate the MAE directly. The magnetic coupling between single Co atoms adsorbed on a copper surface is determined by probing the Kondo resonance using low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The Kondo resonance, which is due to magnetic correlation effects between the spin of a magnetic adatom and the conduction electrons of the substrate, is modified in a characteristic way by the coupling of the neighbouring adatom spins. Increasing the interatomic distance of a Cobalt dimer from 2.56A to 8.1A we follow the oscillatory transition from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic coupling. Adding a third atom to the antiferromagnetically coupled dimer results in the formation of a collective correlated state., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

The electronic and vibrational density of states of a semiconducting carbon nanotube in a crossed junction was investigated by elastic and inelastic scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The strong radial compression of the nanotube at the junction induces local metallization spatially confined to a few nm. The local electronic modifications are correlated with the observed changes in the radial breathing and G-band phonon modes, which react very sensitively to local mechanical deformation. In addition, the experiments reveal the crucial contribution of the image charges to the contact potential at nanotube-metal interfaces.

It is generally believed that expanding superbubbles and mechanical feedback from massive stars trigger star formation, because there are numerous examples of superbubbles showing secondary star formation at their edges. However, while these systems show an age sequence, they do not provide strong evidence of a causal relationship. The W3/W4 Galactic star-forming complex suggests a three-generation hierarchy: the supergiant shell structures correspond to the oldest generation; these triggered the formation of IC 1795 in W3, the progenitor of a molecular superbubble; which in turn triggered the current star-forming episodes in the embedded regions W3-North, W3-Main, and W3-OH. We present UBV photometry and spectroscopic classifications for IC 1795, which show an age of 3 - 5 Myr. This age is intermediate between the reported 6 - 20 Myr age of the supergiant shell system, and the extremely young ages (10^4 - 10^5 yr) for the embedded knots of ultracompact HII regions, W3-North, W3-Main, and W3-OH. Thus, an age sequence is indeed confirmed for the entire W3/W4 hierarchical system. This therefore provides some of the first convincing evidence that superbubble action and mechanical feedback are indeed a triggering mechanism for star formation., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures; accepted to the Astronomical Journal. The Kondo temperature $T_K$ of single Co adatoms on monolayers of Ag on Cu and Au(111) is determined using Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy. $T_K$ of Co on a single monolayer of Ag on either substrate is essentially the same as that of Co on a homogenous Ag(111) crystal. This gives strong evidence that the interaction of surface Kondo impurities with the substrate is very local in nature. By comparing $T_K$ found for Co on Cu, Ag, and Au (111)-surfaces we show that the energy scale of the many-electron Kondo state is insensitive to the properties of surface states and to the energetic position of the projected bulk band edges., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The model systems for self-organized quantum dots formed from elemental and compound semiconductors, namely Ge grown on Si(001) and InAs on GaAs(001), are comparatively studied by scanning tunneling microscopy. It is shown that in both material combinations only two well-defined families of faceted and defect-free nanocrystals exist (and coexist). These three-dimensional islands, pyramids and domes, show common morphological characteristics, independently of the specific material system. A universal behavior is further demonstrated in the capping-passivation process that turns the nanocrystals in true quantum dots., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Based on the experimental observation, that only the close vicinity of a magnetic impurity at metal surfaces determines its Kondo behaviour, we introduce a simple model which explains the Kondo temperatures observed for cobalt adatoms at the (111) and (100) surfaces of Cu, Ag, and Au. Excellent agreement between the model and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) experiments is demonstrated. The inelastic electron tunneling spectrum (IETS)of highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) has been measured with scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) at 6K. The observed spectral features are in very good agreement with the vibrational density of states (vDOS) of graphite calculated from first principles. We discuss the enhancement of certain phonon modes by phonon-assisted tunneling in STS based on the restrictions imposed by the electronic structure of graphite. We also demonstrate for the first time the local excitation of surface-plasmons in IETS which are detected at an energy of 40 meV., Comment: PRB rapid communication, submitted

The quantum dynamics of the two-dimensional image-potential states in front of the Cu(100) surface is measured by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). The dispersion relation and the momentum resolved phase-relaxation time of the first image-potential state are determined from the quantum interference patterns in the local density of states (LDOS) at step edges.
