In twisted layered materials (t-LMs), an inter-layer rotation can break inversion symmetry and create an interfacial array of staggered out-of-plane polarization due to AB/BA stacking registries. This symmetry breaking can also trigger the formation of edge in-plane polarizations localized along the perimeter of AB/BA regions (i.e., saddle point domains). However, a comprehensive experimental investigation of these features is still lacking. Here, we use piezo force microscopy to probe the electromechanical behavior of twisted hexagonal boron nitride (t-hBN). For a parallel stacking alignment of t-hBN, we reveal very narrow (width ~ 20 nm) saddle point polarizations, which we also measure in the anti-parallel configuration. These localized polarizations can still be found on a multiply-stacked t-hBN structure, determining the formation of a double moir\'e. We also visualize a t-hBN moir\'e superlattice in the topography maps with atomic force microscopy, related to the strain accumulated at the saddle point domains. Our findings imply that polarizations in t-hBN do not only point in the out-of-plane direction, but also show an in-plane component, giving rise to a much more complex 3D polarization field.

Interlayer excitons in transition-metal dichalcogenide heterobilayers combine high binding energy and valley-contrasting physics with long optical lifetime and strong dipolar character. Their permanent electric dipole enables electric-field control of emission energy, lifetime, and location. Device material and geometry impacts the nature of the interlayer excitons via their real- and momentum-space configurations. Here, we show that interlayer excitons in MoS$_{2}$/MoSe$_{2}$ heterobilayers are formed by charge carriers residing at the Brillouin zone edges, with negligible interlayer hybridization. We find that the moir\'e superlattice leads to the reversal of the valley-dependent optical selection rules, yielding a positively valued g-factor and cross-polarized photoluminescence. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements reveal that the interlayer exciton population retains the optically induced valley polarization throughout its microsecond-long lifetime. The combination of long optical lifetime and valley polarization retention makes MoS$_{2}$/MoSe$_{2}$ heterobilayers a promising platform for studying fundamental bosonic interactions and developing excitonic circuits for optical information processing.

The quantum Hall effect is widely used for the investigation of fundamental phenomena, ranging from topological phases to composite fermions. In particular, the discovery of a room temperature resistance quantum in graphene is significant for compact resistance standards that can operate above cryogenic temperatures. However, this requires large magnetic fields that are accessible only in a few high magnetic field facilities. Here, we report on the quantum Hall effect in graphene encapsulated by the ferroelectric insulator CuInP2S6. Electrostatic gating of the graphene channel enables the Fermi energy to be tuned so that electrons in the localized states of the insulator are in equilibrium with the current-carrying, delocalized states of graphene. Due to the presence of strongly bound states in this hybrid system, a quantum Hall plateau can be achieved at room temperature in relatively modest magnetic fields. Janus transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers are fully artificial materials, where one plane of chalcogen atoms is replaced by chalcogen atoms of a different type. Theory predicts an in-built out-of-plane electric field, giving rise to long-lived, dipolar excitons, while preserving direct-bandgap optical transitions in a uniform potential landscape. Previous Janus studies had broad photoluminescence (>15 meV) spectra obfuscating their excitonic origin. Here, we identify the neutral, and negatively charged inter- and intravalley exciton transitions in Janus WSeS monolayer with $\sim 6$ meV optical linewidth. We combine a recently developed synthesis technique, with the integration of Janus monolayers into vertical heterostructures, allowing doping control. Further, magneto-optic measurements indicate that monolayer WSeS has a direct bandgap at the K points. This work provides the foundation for applications such as nanoscale sensing, which relies on resolving excitonic energy shifts, and photo-voltaic energy harvesting, which requires efficient creation of long-lived excitons and integration into vertical heterostructures.

The conversion efficiency of ultra-thin solar cells based on layered materials has been limited by their open-circuit voltage, which is typically pinned to a value under 0.6 V. Here we report an open-circuit voltage of 1.02 V in a 120 nm-thick vertically stacked homojunction fabricated with substitutionally doped MoS2. This high open-circuit voltage is consistent with the band alignment in the MoS2 homojunction, which is more favourable than in widely-used TMDC heterostructures. It is also attributed to the high performance of the substitutionally doped MoS2, in particular the p-type material doped with Nb, which is demonstrated by the observation of electroluminescence from tunnelling graphene/BN/MoS2 structures in spite of the indirect nature of bulk MoS2. We find that illuminating the TMDC/metal contacts decreases the measured open-circuit voltage in MoS2 van der Waals homojunctions because they are photoactive, which points to the need of developing low-resistance, ohmic contacts to doped MoS2 in order to achieve high efficiency in practical devices. The high open-circuit voltage demonstrated here confirms the potential of layered transition-metal dichalcogenides for the development of highly efficient, ultra-thin solar cells.

We show that ordered monolayers of organic molecules stabilized by hydrogen bonding on the surface of exfoliated few-layer hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) flakes may be incorporated into van der Waals heterostructures with integral few-layer graphene contacts forming a molecular/2D hybrid tunneling diode. Electrons can tunnel from through the hBN/molecular barrier under an applied voltage VSD and we observe molecular electroluminescence from an excited singlet state with an emitted photon energy > eVSD, indicating up-conversion by energies up to ~ 1 eV. We show that tunnelling electrons excite embedded molecules into singlet states in a two-step process via an intermediate triplet state through inelastic scattering and also observe direct emission from the triplet state. These heterostructures provide a solid-state device in which spin-triplet states, which cannot be generated by optical transitions, can be controllably excited and provide a new route to investigate the physics, chemistry and quantum spin-based applications of triplet generation, emission and molecular photon up-conversion.

We have investigated the influence of the substrate on the fluorescence of adsorbed organic molecules. Monolayer films of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic-3,4,9,10-diimide (PTCDI), a supramolecular network formed from PTCDI and melamine, and perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic-3,4,9,10-dianhydride (PTCDA) have been deposited on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). The principal peaks in the fluorescence spectra of these films were red-shifted by up to 0.37 eV relative to published measurements for molecules in helium droplets. Smaller shifts (~0.03 eV) arising from interactions between neighbouring molecules are investigated by comparing the fluorescence of distinct arrangements of PTCDI, which are templated by supramolecular self-assembly and determined with molecular resolution using atomic force microscopy under ambient conditions. We compare our experimental results with red-shifts calculated using a combination of a perturbative model and density functional theory which account for, respectively, resonant and non-resonant effects of a dielectric hBN substrate. We show that the substrate gives rise to a red-shift in the fluorescence of an adsorbed molecule and also screens the interactions between neighbouring transition dipole moments; both these effects depend on the refractive index of the substrate.
