Search

2MASS J16075796-2040087 is a ~ 5 Myr young star in Upper Sco with evidence for accretion bursts on a timescale of about 15 days and, uncommonly for its age, outflows traced by multi-component forbidden emission lines (FELs). The accretion bursts may be triggered by a companion at ~ 4.6 au. We analyze HIRES spectra optimised for spectro-astrometry to better understand the origin of the several FEL velocity components and determine whether a MHD disk wind is present. The FEL high velocity component (HVC) traces an asymmetric, bipolar jet ~ 700 au long. The jet's position angle (PA) ~ 277 degrees is not perpendicular to the disk. The lower-velocity emission, classified previously as a disk wind low-velocity component (LVC), is found to have more in common with the HVC and overall it is not possible to identify a MHD disk wind component. The spectro-astrometric signal of the low velocity emission resembles those of jets and its density and ionisation fraction fall into the range of HVCs. We suggest a scenario where the accretion bursts due to the close companion power the jets past the age where such activity ends around most stars. The low-velocity emission here could come from a slow jet launched near the close companion and this emission would be blended with emission from the MHD wind., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Aspera is a NASA Astrophysics Pioneers SmallSat mission designed to study diffuse OVI emission from the warm-hot phase gas in the halos of nearby galaxies. Its payload consists of two identical Rowland Circle-type long-slit spectrographs, sharing a single MicroChannel plate detector. Each spectrograph channel consists of an off-axis parabola primary mirror and a toroidal diffraction grating optimized for the 1013-1057 Angstroms bandpass. Despite the simple configuration, the optical alignment/integration process for Aspera is challenging due to tight optical alignment tolerances, driven by the compact form factor, and the contamination sensitivity of the Far-Ultraviolet optics and detectors. In this paper, we discuss implementing a novel multi-phase approach to meet these requirements using state-of-the-art optical metrology tools. For coarsely positioning the optics we use a blue-laser 3D scanner while the fine alignment is done with a Zygo interferometer and a custom computer-generated hologram. The detector focus requires iterative in-vacuum alignment using a Vacuum UV collimator. The recent discovery of enormous Ly$\alpha$ nebulae (ELANe), characterized by physical extents $>200$ kpc and Ly$\alpha$ luminosities $>10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$, provide a unique opportunity to study the intergalactic and circumgalactic medium (IGM/CGM) in distant galaxies. Many existing ELANe detections are associated with local overdensities of active galactic nuclei (AGN). We have initiated a search for ELANe around regions containing pairs of quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) using the Palomar Cosmic Web Imager (PCWI). The first study of this search, Cai et al., presented results of ELAN0101+0201 which was associated with a QSO pair at $z=2.45$. In this study, all targets residing in QSO pair environments analyzed have Ly$\alpha$ detections, but only one of the four targets meets the classification criteria of an ELANe associated with a QSO pair region (z$\sim2.87$). The other three sample detections of Ly$\alpha$ nebulae do not meet the size and luminosity criteria to be classified as ELANe. We find kinematic evidence that the ELANe J1613, is possibly powered {mostly by AGN outflows.} The analysis of circularly-averaged surface brightness profiles of emission from the Ly$\alpha$ regions show that the {Ly$\alpha$ emission around $z\sim2$ QSO pairs is consistent with emission around individual QSOs at $z\sim2$, which is fainter than that around $z\sim3$ QSOs. A larger sample of Ly$\alpha$ at z$\sim$2 will be needed to determine if there is evidence of redshift evolution when compared to nebular emissions at z$\sim$3 from other studies.

Forbidden emission lines in protoplanetary disks are a key diagnostic in studies of the evolution of the disk and the host star. We report spatially resolved emission lines, [OI] 6300, 6363, [NII] 6548, 6583, H$\alpha$, and [SII] 6716, 6730 Angstrom that are believed to be associated with jets and magnetically driven winds in the inner disks. Observations were carried out with the optical integral field spectrograph of the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE), at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). With a resolution of 0.025 X 0.025 arcsec$^{2}$, we aim to derive the position angle of the outflow/jet (PA$_{outflow/jet}$) that is connected with the inner disk. The forbidden emission lines analyzed here have their origin at the inner parts of the protoplanetary disk. From the maximum intensity emission along the outflow/jet in DL Tau, CI Tau, DS Tau, IP Tau, and IM Lup, we were able to reliably measure the PA$_{outflow/jet}$ for most of the identified lines. We found that our estimates agree with PA$_{dust}$ for most of the disks. These estimates depend on the signal-to-noise level and the collimation of the outflow (jet). The outflows/jets in CIDA 9, GO Tau, and GW Lup are too compact for a PA$_{outflow/jet}$ to be estimated. Based on our kinematics analysis, we confirm that DL Tau and CI Tau host a strong outflow/jet with line-of-sight velocities much greater than 100 km s$^{-1}$, whereas DS Tau, IP Tau, and IM Lup velocities are lower and their structures encompass low-velocity components to be more associated with winds. Our estimates for the mass-loss rate, $\dot{M}_{{loss}}$, range between (1.1-6.5)X10$^{-7}$-10$^{-8}$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ for the disk-outflow/jet systems analyzed here. The outflow/jet systems analyzed here are aligned within around 1 degree between the inner and outer disk. PDS70 is a unique system in which two protoplanets, PDS70b and c, have been discovered within the dust-depleted cavity of their disk, at $\sim$22 and 34au respectively, by direct imaging at infrared wavelengths. Subsequent detection of the planets in the H$\alpha$ line indicates that they are still accreting material through circumplanetary disks. In this Letter, we present new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the dust continuum emission at 855$\mu$m at high angular resolution ($\sim$20mas, 2.3au) that aim to resolve the circumplanetary disks and constrain their dust masses. Our observations confirm the presence of a compact source of emission co-located with PDS70c, spatially separated from the circumstellar disk and less extended than $\sim$1.2au in radius, a value close to the expected truncation radius of the cicumplanetary disk at a third of the Hill radius. The emission around PDS70c has a peak intensity of $\sim$86$\pm$16 $\mu \mathrm{Jy}~\mathrm{beam}^{-1}$ which corresponds to a dust mass of $\sim$0.031M$_{\oplus}$ or $\sim$0.007M$_{\oplus}$, assuming that it is only constituted of 1 $\mu$m or 1 mm sized grains, respectively. We also detect extended, low surface brightness continuum emission within the cavity near PDS70b. We observe an optically thin inner disk within 18au of the star with an emission that could result from small micron-sized grains transported from the outer disk through the orbits of b and c. In addition, we find that the outer disk resolves into a narrow and bright ring with a faint inner shoulder., Comment: ApJ Letters, in press; 19 pages, 9 figures

We obtained polarimetric differential imaging of a gas-rich debris disk around HD 141569A with SPHERE in the H-band to compare the scattering properties of the innermost ring at 44 au with former observations in total intensity with the same instrument. In polarimetric imaging, we observed that the intensity of the ring peaks in the south-east, mostly in the forward direction, whereas in total intensity imaging, the ring is detected only at the south. This noticeable characteristic suggests a non-uniform dust density in the ring. We implemented a density function varying azimuthally along the ring and generated synthetic images both in polarimetry and in total intensity, which are then compared to the actual data. We find that the dust density peaks in the south-west at an azimuthal angle of $220^{\circ} \sim 238^{\circ}$ with a rather broad width of $61^{\circ} \sim 127^{\circ}$. Although there are still uncertainties that remain in the determination of the anisotropic scattering factor, the implementation of an azimuthal density variation to fit the data proved to be robust. Upon elaborating on the origin of this dust density distribution, we conclude that it could be the result of a massive collision when we account for the effect of the high gas mass that is present in the system on the dynamics of grains. Using the outcome of this modelization, we further measured the polarized scattering phase function for the observed scattering angle between 33$^{\circ}$ and 147$^{\circ}$ as well as the spectral reflectance of the southern part of the ring between 0.98 $\mu$m and 2.1 $\mu$m. We tentatively derived the grain properties by comparing these quantities with MCFOST models and assuming Mie scattering. As host to two accreting planets, PDS 70 provides a unique opportunity to probe the chemical complexity of atmosphere-forming material. We present ALMA Band 6 observations of the PDS~70 disk and report the first chemical inventory of the system. With a spatial resolution of 0.4''-0.5'' ($\sim$50 au), 12 species are detected, including CO isotopologues and formaldehyde, small hydrocarbons, HCN and HCO+ isotopologues, and S-bearing molecules. SO and CH3OH are not detected. All lines show a large cavity at the center of the disk, indicative of the deep gap carved by the massive planets. The radial profiles of the line emission are compared to the (sub-)mm continuum and infrared scattered light intensity profiles. Different molecular transitions peak at different radii, revealing the complex interplay between density, temperature and chemistry in setting molecular abundances. Column densities and optical depth profiles are derived for all detected molecules, and upper limits obtained for the non detections. Excitation temperature is obtained for H2CO. Deuteration and nitrogen fractionation profiles from the hydro-cyanide lines show radially increasing fractionation levels. Comparison of the disk chemical inventory to grids of chemical models from the literature strongly suggests a disk molecular layer hosting a carbon to oxygen ratio C/O>1, thus providing for the first time compelling evidence of planets actively accreting high C/O ratio gas at present time., Comment: 25 pages, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

A stunning range of substructures in the dust of protoplanetary disks is routinely observed across a range of wavelengths. These gaps, rings and spirals are highly indicative of a population of unseen planets, hinting at the possibility of current observational facilities being able to capture planet-formation in action. Over the last decade, our understanding of the influence of a young planet on the dynamical structure of its parental disk has progressed significantly, revealing a host of potentially observable features which would betray the presence of a deeply embedded planet. In concert, recent observations have shown that subtle perturbations in the kinematic structure of protoplanetary disks are found in multiple sources, potentially the characteristic disturbances associated with embedded planets. In this work, we review the theoretical background of planet-disk interactions, focusing on the kinematical features, and the current methodologies used to observe these interactions in spatially and spectrally resolved observations. We discuss the potential pit falls of such kinematical detections of planets, providing best-practices for imaging and analysing interferometric data, along with a set of criteria to use as a benchmark for any claimed detection of embedded planets. We finish with a discussion on the current state of simulations in regard to planet-disk interactions, highlighting areas of particular interest and future directions which will provide the most significant impact in our search for embedded planets. The search for young planets had its first breakthrough with the detection of the accreting planet PDS70b. In this study, we aim to broaden our understanding towards the formation of multi-planet systems such as HR8799 or the Solar System. Our previous study on HD169142, one of the closest Herbig stars, points towards a shadow-casting protoplanetary candidate. Here, we present follow-up observations to test our previously proposed hypothesis. We set our new data into context with previous observations to follow structural changes in the disk over the course of 6 years. We find spatially resolved systematic changes in the position of the previously described surface brightness dip in the inner ring. We further find changes in the brightness structure in azimuthal direction along the ring. And finally, a comparison of our SPHERE data with recent ALMA observations reveals a wavelength dependent radial profile of the bright ring. The time-scale on which the changes in the ring's surface brightness occur suggest that they are caused by a shadow cast by a 1-10Mj planet surrounded by dust, an orbit comparable to those of the giant planets in our own Solar System. Additionally, we find the first indications for temperature-induced instabilities in the ring. And finally, we trace a pressure maxima, for the first time spatially resolved, with a width of 4.5au. The density distribution of the ring at mm wavelengths around the pressure maxima could further indicate effects from snow lines or even the dynamics and feedback of the larger grains., Comment: Submitted to ApJ, in rev

Scattered light imaging has revealed nearly a dozen circumstellar disks around young Herbig Ae/Be stars$-$enabling studies of structures in the upper disk layers as potential signs of on-going planet formation. We present the first images of the disk around the variable Herbig Ae star PDS 201 (V* V351 Ori), and an analysis of the images and spectral energy distribution through 3D Monte-Carlo radiative transfer simulations and forward modelling. The disk is detected in three datasets with LBTI/LMIRCam at the LBT, including direct observations in the $Ks$ and $L'$ filters, and an $L'$ observation with the 360$^\circ$ vector apodizing phase plate coronagraph. The scattered light disk extends to a very large radius of $\sim$250 au, which places it among the largest of such disks. Exterior to the disk, we establish detection limits on substellar companions down to $\sim$5 M$_{Jup}$ at $\gtrsim$1.5" ($\gtrsim$500 au), assuming the Baraffe et al. (2015) models. The images show a radial gap extending to $\sim$0.4" ($\sim$140 au at a distance of 340 pc) that is also evident in the spectral energy distribution. The large gap is a possible signpost of multiple high-mass giant planets at orbital distances ($\sim$60-100 au) that are unusually massive and widely-separated compared to those of planet populations previously inferred from protoplanetary disk substructures., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

Small planets are common around late-M dwarfs and can be detected through highly precise photometry by the transit method. Planets orbiting nearby stars are particularly important as they are often the best-suited for future follow-up studies. We present observations of three nearby M-dwarfs referred to as EIC-1, EIC-2, and EIC-3, and use them to search for transits and set limits on the presence of planets. On most nights our observations are sensitive to Earth-sized transiting planets, and photometric precision is similar to or better than TESS for faint late-M dwarfs of the same magnitude (I=15 mag). We present our photometry and transit search pipeline, which utilizes simple median detrending in combination with transit least squares based transit detection (Hippke & Heller 2019).For these targets, and transiting planets between one and two Earth radii, we achieve an average transit detection probability of 60% between periods of 0.5 and 2 days, 30% between 2 and 5 days,and 10% between 5 and 10 days. While numerical simulations have been playing a key role in the studies of planet-disk interaction, testing numerical results against observations has been limited so far. With the two directly imaged protoplanets embedded in its circumstellar disk, PDS 70 offers an ideal testbed for planet-disk interaction studies. Using two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations we show that the observed features can be well explained with the two planets in formation, providing strong evidence that previously proposed theories of planet-disk interaction are in action, including resonant migration, particle trapping, size segregation, and filtration. Our simulations suggest that the two planets are likely in 2:1 mean motion resonance and can remain dynamically stable over million-year timescales. The growth of the planets at $10^{-8}-10^{-7}~M_{\rm Jup}~{\rm yr}^{-1}$, rates comparable to the estimates from H$\alpha$ observations, does not destabilize the resonant configuration. Large grains are filtered at the gap edge and only small, (sub-)$\mu$m grains can flow to the circumplanetary disks and the inner circumstellar disk. With the sub-millimeter continuum ring observed outward of the two directly imaged planets, PDS 70 provides the first observational evidence of particle filtration by gap-opening planets. The observed sub-millimeter continuum emission at the vicinity of the planets can be reproduced when (sub-)$\mu$m grains survive over multiple circumplanetary disk gas viscous timescales and accumulate therein. One such possibility is if (sub-)$\mu$m grains grow in size and remain trapped in pressure bumps, similar to what we find happening in circumstellar disks. In a multi-wavelength study of thermal emission and scattered light images we analyse the dust properties and structure of the debris disc around the A1-type main sequence star 49~Cet. As a basis for this study, we present new scattered light images of the debris disc known to possess both a high amount of dust and gas. The outer region of the disc is revealed in former coronagraphic H-band and our new Y-band images from the Very Large Telescope SPHERE instrument. We use the knowledge of the disc's radial extent inferred from ALMA observations and the grain size distribution found by SED fitting to generate semi-dynamical dust models of the disc. We compare the models to scattered light and thermal emission data and find that a disc with a maximum of the surface density at 110~au and shallow edges can describe both thermal emission and scattered light observations. This suggests that grains close to the blow-out limit and large grains stem from the same planetesimal population and are mainly influenced by radiation pressure. We present the discovery of a spatially unresolved source of sub-millimeter continuum emission ($\lambda=855$ $\mu$m) associated with a young planet, PDS 70 c, recently detected in H$\alpha$ emission around the 5 Myr old T Tauri star PDS 70. We interpret the emission as originating from a dusty circumplanetary disk with a dust mass between $2\times10^{-3}$ and $4.2 \times 10^{-3}$ Earth masses. Assuming a standard gas-to-dust ratio of 100, the ratio between the total mass of the circumplanetary disk and the mass of the central planet would be between $10^{-4}-10^{-5}$. Furthermore, we report the discovery of another compact continuum source located $0.074''\pm0.013''$ South-West of a second known planet in this system, PDS 70 b, that was previously detected in near-infrared images. We speculate that the latter source might trace dust orbiting in proximity of the planet, but more sensitive observations are required to unveil its nature., Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJL

PDS 70b is a recently discovered and directly imaged exoplanet within the wide ($\gtrsim$40 au) cavity around PDS 70 (Keppler et al. 2018, M\"uller et al. 2018). Ongoing accretion onto the central star suggests that accretion onto PDS 70b may also be ongoing. We present the first high contrast images at H$\alpha$ (656 nm) and nearby continuum (643 nm) of PDS 70 utilizing the MagAO system. The combination of these filters allows for the accretion rate of the young planet to be inferred, as hot infalling hydrogen gas will emit strongly at H$\alpha$ over the optical continuum. We detected a source in H$\alpha$ at the position of PDS 70b on two sequential nights in May 2018, for which we establish a false positive probability of $<$0.1%. We conclude that PDS 70b is a young, actively accreting planet. We utilize the H$\alpha$ line luminosity to derive a mass accretion rate of $\dot M= 10^{-8\pm1}$ M$_{Jup}/yr$, where the large uncertainty is primarily due to the unknown amount of optical extinction from the circumstellar and circumplanetary disks. Thanks to the detections of more than 3000 exoplanets these last 20 years, statistical studies have already highlighted some properties in the distribution of the planet parameters. Nevertheless, few studies have yet investigated the planet populations from short to large separations around the same star since this requires the use of different detection techniques that usually target different types of stars. We wish to develop a tool that combines direct and indirect methods so as to correctly investigate the giant planet populations at all separations. We developed the MESS2 code, a Monte Carlo simulation code combining radial velocity and direct imaging data obtained at different epochs for a given star to estimate the detection probability of giant planets spanning a wide range of physical separations. It is based on the generation of synthetic planet populations. We apply MESS2 on a young M1-type, the nearby star AUMic observed with HARPS and NACO/ESO. We show that giant planet detection limits are significantly improved at intermediate separations (~20au in the case of AUMic). We show that the traditional approach of analysing independently the RV and DI detection limits systematically overestimates the planet detection limits and hence planet occurrence rates. The use of MESS2 allows to obtain correct planet occurrence rates in statistical studies, making use of multi-epoch DI data and/or RV measurements.
