In this paper, we aim to understand how user motivation shapes human-robot interaction (HRI) in the wild. To explore this, we conducted a field study by deploying a fully autonomous conversational robot in a shopping mall over two days. Through sequential video analysis, we identified five patterns of interaction fluency (Smooth, Awkward, Active, Messy, and Quiet), four types of user motivation for interacting with the robot (Function, Experiment, Curiosity, and Education), and user positioning towards the robot. We further analyzed how these motivations and positioning influence interaction fluency. Our findings suggest that incorporating users' motivation types into the design of robot behavior can enhance interaction fluency, engagement, and user satisfaction in real-world HRI scenarios., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Simple mechanical exfoliation of layered materials is the most frequently employed method for producing high-quality monolayers of two-dimensional semiconducting materials. However, the mechanical exfoliation by human hands is a microscopically sophisticated process with a large number of microscopic parameters, which requires significant operator efforts and limits the reproducibility in achieving high-quality and large-area monolayer semiconducting materials. Herein, we have proposed a new strategy for the mechanical exfoliation by combining a developed robotic system and Bayesian optimization. We have demonstrated that it is possible to explore the optimized experimental conditions among a large number of parameter combinations for mechanical exfoliation in a relatively small number of experimental trials. Moreover, the entire mechanical exfoliation process from preparation to detection of monolayer semiconductors was performed by the developed autonomous robotic system. The optimized experimental condition was determined through only 30 trials of mechanical exfoliation experiments, representing 2.5% of all experimental parameter conditions. As a result, the critical parameters for the efficient fabrication of large-area monolayer WSe$_2$ were elucidated.

This paper reports a practical articulated wheeled in-pipe inspection robot "AIRo-7.1" which is waterproof and dustproof, and can adapt to 3 to 4 in inner diameters. The joint torque can be adjusted by a PWM open-loop control. The middle joint angle can be controlled by a position feedback control system while the other two joints are bent by torsional springs. Thanks to this simple and high-density design, not only downsizing of the robot but also wide range of the adaptive inner diameter were achieved. However, the relationship between the actual middle joint torque value and the PWM duty ratio should be pre-known because the reducer used in AIRo-7.1 was designed by ourselves. Therefore, preliminary experiments were conducted to clarify the relationship between them. To examine the adaptive movement, experiments in both 3 in and 4 in pipes with vertical, bend, and diameter change sections. Finally, field experiment was also conducted. $FeCr_2S_4$ is a ferrimagnet with two oppositely-ordered spin sublattices (Fe and Cr), connected via superexchange interaction, giving a non-zero net magnetic moment. We show how the magnetic dynamics of the sublattices can be selectively manipulated by resonantly perturbing the Fe sublattice using ultrashort laser pulses. The mid-infrared excitation through intra-atomic Fe $d-d$ transitions triggers a markedly slower magneto-optical Kerr effect dynamics compared to an off-resonant pumping affecting both the two sublattices simultaneously. Open Radio Access Networks (RAN) aim to bring a paradigm shift to telecommunications industry, by enabling an open, intelligent, virtualized, and multi-vendor interoperable RAN ecosystem. At the center of this movement, O-RAN ALLIANCE defines the O-RAN architecture and standards, so that companies around the globe can use these specifications to create innovative and interoperable solutions. To accelerate the adoption of O-RAN products, rigorous testing of O-RAN Radio Unit (O-RU) and other O-RAN products plays a key role. O-RAN ALLIANCE has approved around 20 Open Testing and Integration Centres (OTICs) globally. OTICs serve as vendor-neutral platforms for providing the testing and integration services, with the vision that an O-RAN product certified in any OTIC is accepted in other parts of the world. To demonstrate the viability of such a certified-once-and-use-everywhere approach, one theme in the O-RAN Global PlugFest Spring 2024 is to demonstrate consistent and repeatable testing for the open fronthaul interface across multiple labs. Towards this, Japan OTIC and Asia Pacific OTIC in Singapore have teamed up together with an O-RU vendor and Keysight Technology. Our international team successfully completed all test cases defined by O-RAN ALLIANCE for O-RU conformance testing. In medical settings, it is critical that all who are in need of care are correctly heard and understood. When this is not the case due to prejudices a listener has, the speaker is experiencing \emph{testimonial injustice}, which, building upon recent work, we quantify by the presence of several categories of unjust vocabulary in medical notes. In this paper, we use FCI, a causal discovery method, to study the degree to which certain demographic features could lead to marginalization (e.g., age, gender, and race) by way of contributing to testimonial injustice. To achieve this, we review physicians' notes for each patient, where we identify occurrences of unjust vocabulary, along with the demographic features present, and use causal discovery to build a Structural Causal Model (SCM) relating those demographic features to testimonial injustice. We analyze and discuss the resulting SCMs to show the interaction of these factors and how they influence the experience of injustice. Despite the potential presence of some confounding variables, we observe how one contributing feature can make a person more prone to experiencing another contributor of testimonial injustice. There is no single root of injustice and thus intersectionality cannot be ignored. These results call for considering more than singular or equalized attributes of who a person is when analyzing and improving their experiences of bias and injustice. This work is thus a first foray at using causal discovery to understand the nuanced experiences of patients in medical settings, and its insights could be used to guide design principles throughout healthcare, to build trust and promote better patient care.

We have investigated the surface and bulk electronic structures of the superconducting type-II Dirac semimetal 1T-PdSeTe. The superconducting transition temperature $T_C = 3.2$ K was almost twice as high as $T_C = 1.6$ K in 1T-PdTe$_2$. Scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements showed homogeneously mixed Se and Te atoms in the chalcogen layers, consistent with the CdI$_2$-type crystal structure. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and density functional theory calculations indicated the existence of the topological surface states, and the overall band structures were similar to those of 1T-PdTe$_2$. These results suggest that CdI$_2$-type lattice symmetry dictates the band dispersion, regardless of atomic disorder in the chalcogen layers. As the electronic band dispersion and the local structures were persistent upon substitution, the enhancement of $T_C$ is likely associated with the chemical pressure. The Weyl semimetals represent a distinct category of topological materials wherein the low-energy excitations appear as the long-sought Weyl fermions. Exotic transport and optical properties are expected because of the chiral anomaly and linear energy-momentum dispersion. While three-dimensional Weyl semimetals have been successfully realized, the quest for their two-dimensional (2D) counterparts is ongoing. Here, we report the realization of 2D Weyl fermions in monolayer PtTe$_{1.75}$, which has strong spin-orbit coupling and lacks inversion symmetry, by combined angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, second harmonic generation, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, and first-principles calculations. The giant Rashba splitting and band inversion lead to the emergence of three pairs of critical Weyl cones. Moreover, monolayer PtTe$_{1.75}$ exhibits excellent chemical stability in ambient conditions, which is critical for future device applications. The discovery of 2D Weyl fermions in monolayer PtTe$_{1.75}$ opens up new possibilities for designing and fabricating novel spintronic devices.

Recent theoretical efforts predicted a type of unconventional antiferromagnet characterized by the crystal symmetry C (rotation or mirror), which connects antiferromagnetic sublattices in real space and simultaneously couples spin and momentum in reciprocal space. This results in a unique C-paired spin-valley locking (SVL) and corresponding novel properties such as piezomagnetism and noncollinear spin current even without spin-orbit coupling. However, the unconventional antiferromagnets reported thus far are not layered materials, limiting their potential in spintronic applications. Additionally, they do not meet the necessary symmetry requirements for nonrelativistic spin current. Here, we report the realization of C-paired SVL in a layered room-temperature antiferromagnetic compound, Rb1-{\delta}V2Te2O. Spin resolved photoemission measurements directly demonstrate the opposite spin splitting between C-paired valleys. Quasi-particle interference patterns reveal the suppression of inter-valley scattering due to the spin selection rules, as a direct consequence of C-paired SVL. All these experiments are well consistent with the results obtained from first-principles calculations. Our observations represent the first realization of layered antiferromagnets with C-paired SVL, enabling both the advantages of layered materials and possible control through crystal symmetry manipulation. Injustice occurs when someone experiences unfair treatment or their rights are violated and is often due to the presence of implicit biases and prejudice such as stereotypes. The automated identification of injustice in text has received little attention, due in part to the fact that underlying implicit biases or stereotypes are rarely explicitly stated and that instances often occur unconsciously due to the pervasive nature of prejudice in society. Here, we describe a novel framework that combines the use of a fine-tuned BERT-based bias detection model, two stereotype detection models, and a lexicon-based approach to show that epistemological biases (i.e., words, which presupposes, entails, asserts, hedges, or boosts text to erode or assert a person's capacity as a knower) can assist with the automatic detection of injustice in text. The news media has many instances of injustice (i.e. discriminatory narratives), thus it is our use case here. We conduct and discuss an empirical qualitative research study which shows how the framework can be applied to detect injustices, even at higher volumes of data.

Recently, unconventional antiferromagnets that enable the splitting of electronic spins have been theoretically proposed and experimentally realized, where the magnetic sublattices containing moments pointing at different directions are connected by a novel set of symmetries. Such spin splitting (SS) is substantial, $k$-dependent, and independent of the spin-orbit coupling strength, making these magnets promising materials for antiferromagnetic spintronics. Here, combined with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we perform a systematic study on CrSb, a metallic spin-split antiferromagnet candidate with $T_N$ = 703 K. Our data reveals the electronic structure of CrSb along both out-of-plane and in-plane momentum directions, which renders anisotropic $k$-dependent SS and agrees well with the calculational results. The magnitude of such SS reaches up to at least 0.8 eV at non-high-symmetry momentum points, which is significantly higher than the largest known SOC-induced SS. This compound expands the choice of materials in the field of antiferromagnetic spintronics and is likely to stimulate subsequent investigations of high-efficiency spintronic devices that are functional at room temperature., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

We show that strong subadditivity provides a simple derivation of the $g$-theorem for the boundary renormalization group flow in two-dimensional conformal field theories. We work out its holographic interpretation and also give a derivation of the $g$-theorem for the case of an interface in two-dimensional conformal field theories. Motivated by COVID-19 vaccine allocation, where vulnerable subpopulations are simultaneously more impacted in terms of health and more disadvantaged in terms of access to the vaccine, we formalize and study the problem of resource allocation when there are inherent access differences that correlate with advantage and disadvantage. We identify reducing resource disparity as a key goal in this context and show its role as a proxy to more nuanced downstream impacts. We develop a concrete access model that helps quantify how a given allocation translates to resource flow for the advantaged vs. the disadvantaged, based on the access gap between them. We then provide a methodology for access-aware allocation. Intuitively, the resulting allocation leverages more vaccines in locations with higher vulnerable populations to mitigate the access gap and reduce overall disparity. Surprisingly, knowledge of the access gap is often not needed to perform access-aware allocation. To support this formalism, we provide empirical evidence for our access model and show that access-aware allocation can significantly reduce resource disparity and thus improve downstream outcomes. In this paper, we present holographic descriptions of entanglement phase transition using AdS/BCFT. First, we analytically calculate the holographic pseudo entropy in the AdS/BCFT model with a brane localized scalar field and show the entanglement phase transition behavior where the time evolution of entropy changes from the linear growth to the trivial one via a critical logarithmic evolution. In this model, the imaginary valued scalar field localized on the brane controls the phase transition, which is analogous to the amount of projections in the measurement induced phase transition. Next, we study the AdS/BCFT model with a brane localized gauge field, where the phase transition looks different in that there is no logarithmically evolving critical point. Finally, we discuss a bulk analog of the above model by considering a double Wick rotation of the Janus solution. We compute the holographic pseudo entropy in this model and show that the entropy grows logarithmically., Comment: 60+21 pages, 36 figures

From lithium-ion batteries to high-temperature superconductors, oxide materials have been widely used in electronic devices. However, demands of future technologies require materials beyond oxides, as anion chemistries distinct from oxygen can expand the palette of mechanisms and phenomena, to achieve superior functionalities. Examples include nitride-based wide bandgap semiconductors and halide perovskite solar cells, with MAPbBr3 being a representation revolutionizing photovoltaics research. Here, we demonstrate magnetoelectric behaviour in quasi-two-dimensional halides (K,Rb)3Mn2Cl7 through simultaneous thermal control of electric and magnetic polarizations by exploiting a polar-to-antipolar displacive transition. Additionally, our calculations indicate a possible polarization switching path including a strong magnetoelectric coupling, indicating halides can be excellent platforms to design future multiferroic and ferroelectric devices. We expect our findings to broaden the exploration of multiferroics to non-oxide materials and open access to novel mechanisms, beyond conventional electric/magnetic control, for coupling ferroic orders., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures
