Abstract

Oxfam developed a multi-sector Coping Strategy Index (mCSI) to provide the humanitarian community in Afghanistan with a tool to assess and monitor the impact of interventions – especially multi-purpose cash grants – with data collected from Nangarhar, Herat, Kunduz, Kandahar and Kabul provinces. The project was funded by EU humanitarian aid and Oxfam., This report explains how the index was developed and tested in the field to verify its validity as a proxy of overall household stress. 2. Making Maize Markets Work For All in Southern Africa

Abstract

In most of sub-Saharan Africa, maize is a staple food crop – grown on some 33 million hectares of the total 194 million hectares of cultivated land. Southern African also has some of the highest malnutrition rates in the world. Small-scale maize producers in the region face numerous obstacles and are both buyers and sellers of maize. So how maize markets work is fundamentally important – and currently they work badly., This paper explores some of the reasons why and argues that a major reason markets fail is because there is so little trust or cooperation between governments and private traders, both large and small. It concludes that unless the trust deficit is addressed, markets will continue to operate at woeful levels of inefficiency, no matter what other reforms are undertaken.

Abstract

We use conformal maps to study a free boundary problem for a two-fluid electromechanical system, where the interface between the fluids is determined by the combined effects of electrostatic forces, gravity and surface tension. The free boundary in our system develops sharp corners/singularities in certain parameter regimes, and this is an impediment to using existing "single-scale" numerical conformal mapping methods. The difficulty is due to the phenomenon of crowding, i.e. the tendency of nodes in the preimage plane to concentrate near the sharp regions of the boundary, leaving the smooth regions of the boundary poorly resolved. A natural idea is to exploit the scale separation between the sharp regions and smooth regions to solve for each region separately, and then stitch the solutions together. However, this is not straightforward as conformal maps are rigid "global" objects, and it is not obvious how one would patch two conformal maps together to obtain a new conformal map. We develop a "multi-scale" (i.e. adaptive) conformal mapping method that allows us to carry out this program of stitching conformal maps on different scales together. Abstract

In this dissertation, we study free boundary problems that describe equilibrium configurations of electromechanical systems consisting of a conducting elastic sheet deflected by an external charge distribution. Such systems are non-local in nature - the electrostatic pressure experienced by any individual point on the sheet depends on the entire deflection profile (as a result of the requirement that the deflected sheet must remain an equipotential). The magnitude of the electrostatic pressure varies quadratically with the magnitude of the local electric field. Similar non-local free boundary problems arise in two-layer fluid systems forced by withdrawal flows, but the normal viscous stress experienced by the fluid-fluid interface instead varies linearly with the local velocity gradients. The analysis presented focuses on two configurations in particular: the electromechanical system described above, forced by a point charge, and an artificially modified version of the same electromechanical system in which the induced electrostatic pressure varies linearly with the local electric field and the forcing is provided by an electric dipole. This second model is constructed as a crude approximation of the two-layer fluid flow forced by a point sink, and is primarily used to explore the influence of the forcing exponent on the bifurcation structure and solution types of the associated system. Our main contribution is the development of new techniques for the analysis and efficient numerical computation of large-deflection profiles for the true electromechanical system. The induced charge on such profiles accumulates near the interface tip, so that the geometry there is primarily determined by a balance between elastic and electrostatic forces. Away from the tip, the electrostatic pressure is low and the interface relaxes under the influences of gravity and elasticity only. Such interfaces exhibit features on widely disparate length scales.
