Estimates are presented for public, domestic, agricultural, industrial and mining-related water supply in the USA in 2000 and trends for the period 1950-2000 are discussed. Of a total of about 408 000 million gallons/day, mining (including oil and gas) accounted for 3 490 million. The estimate was based on 22 states that had accounted for 83% of total mining water withdrawals in 1995. Withdrawals of fresh and saline groundwater and surface water for mining are tabulated for Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.
