We present observational evidence that leakage of ionising photons from star-forming regions can affect the quantification of the star formation rate (SFR) in galaxies. This effect could partially explain the differences between the SFR estimates using the far ultraviolet (FUV) and the Halpha emission. We find that leakage could decrease the SFR(Ha)/SFR(FUV) ratio by up to a 25 per cent. The evidence is based on the observation that the SFR(Ha)/SFR(FUV) ratio is lower for objects showing a shell Halpha structure than for regions exhibiting a much more compact morphology. The study has been performed on three object samples: low luminosity dwarf galaxies from the Local Volume Legacy survey and star-forming regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud and the nearby Local Group galaxy M33. For the three samples we find differences (1.1-1.4sigma) between the SFR(Ha)/SFR(FUV) for compact and shell objects. Although leakage cannot entirely explain the observed trend of SFR(Ha)/SFR(FUV) ratios for systems with low SFR, we show the mechanism can lead to different SFR estimates when using Halpha and FUV luminosities. Therefore, further study is needed to constrain the contribution of leakage to the low SFR(Ha)/SFR(FUV) ratios observed in dwarf galaxies and its impact on the Halpha flux as a SFR indicator in such objects., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on the identification of 255 candidate variable stars in a field located some 1.7 from the center of the late-type spiral galaxy M101 = NGC 5457, based on observations made with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope.

We report the Discovery of Cepheid variable stars in the galaxy NGC 4414, as part of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale. Observations were obtained with the HST Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) for 13 epochs at V (F555W) and 4 at I (F814W).

We report the detection of Cepheids and a new distance to the spiral galaxy NGC 2541, based on data obtained with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).

Accurate distances to galaxies are critical to determining the present expansion rate of the Universe or Hubble Constant (H(sub 0)). An important step in resolving the current uncertainty in H(sub 0) is the measurement of the distance to the Virgo cluster of galaxies. New observations using the Hubble Space Telescope yield a distance of 17.1 +/- 1.8 Mpc to the Virgo cluster galaxy M100. This distance leads to a value of H(sub 0) = 17 km/sec/Mpc. A comparable value of H(sub 0) is also derived from the Coma cluster using independent estimates of its distance ratio relative to the Virgo cluster.

For a long time, I Zw 18 has been recognized as the lowest abundance extra-galactic HII region (with the possible recent exception of SBS 0335-052; Izotov 1989). As such, it is important for many studies, including the determination of the primordial helium abundance. Recent imaging studies of I Zw 18 have revealed a more complex structure to I Zw 18 than the simple two-component model previously assumed. This has given rise to concern about the reliability of chemical abundance measurements derived for I Zw 18. Researchers have obtained long-slit spectra covering the wavelength range lambda 3650 to lambda 10,000, which allow us to measure physical parameters and chemical abundances as a function of position. With these new data we can investigate the SE component, which has not been studied previously, and we can address some of the concerns about abundance uncertainties.

It has long been held that the star formation rate (SFR) may be described as a power law of the gas density, p(exp n), as given by Schmidt (1959). However, this relation has as yet remained poorly defined and is likewise poorly understood. In particular, most studies have been investigations of global gas and star formation properties of galaxies, due to lack of adequate high-resolution data for detailed studies of individual galaxies. The three spiral galaxies in this study have published maps of both H2 (as traced by CO), and HI, thereby enabling the authors to investigate the relationship between total gas surface density and SFR. The purpose of the present investigation is the comparison of spatially-resolved total surface gas density in three galaxies (NGC 6946, M51, and M83) to sigma sub c as given by the above model. CO, HI and H alpha data for NGC 6946 were taken from Tacconi-Garman (1988), and for M51 and M83 from Lord (1987). The authors used a CO-H2 conversion of N(H2)/I sub CO(exp cos i = 2.8 x 10(exp 20) atoms cm(-2)/(K kms(-1), and summed the H2 and HI data for each galaxy to obtain the total hydrogen gas density. This total was then multiplied by a factor of 1.36 to include the contribution of helium to the total surface gas density. The authors assumed distances to NGC 6946, M51, and M83 to be 6.0, 9.6, and 8.9 Mpc respectively, with inclination angles of 30, 20, and 26 degrees. H alpha flux was used as the measure of SFR for NGC 6946, and SFR for the remaining two galaxies was taken directly from Lord as computed from H alpha measurements. The results of these full-disk studies thus show a remarkable correlation between the total gas density and the threshold densities given by the gravitational stability criterion. In particular, the threshold density appears to mark a lower boundary to the range of gas densities in these galaxies, which may have consequence in determining appropriate models for star formation and gas dynamics. More evidence is required to verify this result, and the authors are currently undertaking a high-resolution study of the nearby spiral M33 and other galaxies to further investigate this problem.

The distribution of light in M 31 is characterized on the basis of the UBVR surface photometry reported by Walterbos and Kennicutt (1987). The results of the data analysis are presented in extensive graphs, maps, and tables and discussed in detail, considering the outer disk regions, the decomposition into bulge and disk, the global disk and bulge colors, and dust and gas in two spiral arms. Principal findings examined include: (1) position-angle changes at radial distances beyond about 18 kpc (consistent with SW disk warping); (2) a bulge profile well described by an r exp 1/4 power law; (3) a bulge contribution to total light of about 40 percent; (4) increasing blueness in the outer disk (color gradient 0.02 mag/kpc in B-R); (5) an extinction law similar to that for the Galaxy; and (6) a significant correlation between dust and H I distributions.

H-alpha and VLA radio continuum observations at wavelengths of 6 and 20 cm are used to study the distribution of extinction and the distribution of giant radio H II regions along the spiral arms in M81. The radial distribution of visual extinction Av in the plane of M81 shows no trend, with an upper limit 0.1 mag/kpc for the radial extinction gradient and a mean Av of 1.1 + or - 0.4 mag. Nearly all the giant radio H II regions lie along the spiral arms or the inner H I ring. The radial distribution of the set of giant radio H II regions exhibits a strong maximum at a galactocentric distance R roughly 300 arcsec. Unless molecular hydrogen in M81 is also concentrated near R roughly 300 arcsec, the data disagree with Visser's (1980) model for star formation associated with a density wave. Some suggestions are made about how to change the ballistic particle model of Leisawitz and Bash to agree with the observed radial distribution of giant radio H II regions.

High resoluton, dual frequency radio observations and calibrated H alpha surface photometry of the spiral galaxy M51 are used to determine the physical properties of the 40 brightest HII region complexes. M51 appears to have a normal HII region population when compared with other nearby Sc galaxies for which good data exist. The radio and H alpha data were used to measure the extinction toward the HII regions. The extinction is very patchy but appears to have a weak trend to become on the average smaller toward large galactocentric radii. This trend is consistent with a possible metallicity gradient in M51. The radio determined extinctions were compared with Balmer decrement extinctions and good agreement was found between the two, contrary to previous studies of M51 and other galaxies.
