Sediment and water samples were collected by submersible in September 1986 at 16 locations on the carbonate cap overlying a conical diapir, which was formed by the upward migration of oil and gas through a subsurface fault on the continental slope off Louisiana, USA (27°47′N; 91°30.4′W). The biological community at the site was photographed quantitatively with still and video cameras. Rigorous spatial sampling indices were maintained so that variation in chemical parameters and in the abundance of photographed organisms could be estimated within the bounds of the study site. Concentrations of extractable organic material (EOM) ranged from 0.24 to 119.26‰ in the sediment samples, while methane concentrations in the water samples were from 0.037 to 66.474 μ M. The visible biological community was predominantly composed of the chemosynthetic tube worms (Vestimentifera) Lamellibrachia sp. and Escarpia sp., and an undescribed, methane-oxidizing mussel (Mytilidae: Bathymodiolus-like), as well as diverse non-chemosynthetic organisms. The ranked abundance of tube worms was significantly correlated ( p<0.05) with the concentration of EOM in the sediment samples, while the abundance of mussels was significantly correlated ( p<0.05) with the concentration of methane in the water samples. Tube worms and mussels both occurred in dense clusters; however, the clusters of mussels had a more restricted distribution within the study site than did clusters of tube worms. The Galveston Bay estuary exhibited a contamination gradient for polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, and the comparative sensitivity of various biomarkers in fishfrom different bay locations were determined. Two fish species, hardhead catfish (Arius felis) and Atlantic croaker (Micropogon undulatus), were collected from four stations where sediment total PAHs rangedfrom 68 to >1,000 ng/g. The induction of cytochrome P4501A-(CYP1A-) dependent hepatic ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity, CYP1AmRNA levels, or CYP1A immunoreactive protein in hardhead catfish washighly variable in the field-collected fish and in fish dosed with up to 15 mg/kg benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). In contrast, significant differences were seen in biliary concentrations of naphthalene, phenanthrene,and BaP metabolites in hardhead catfish from polluted versus less polluted areas. In croakers taken from the same four Galveston Bay, locations, EROD and glutathione S-transferase activities, immunoreactiveCYP1A protein, biliary PAH metabolites, and PAH-DNA adducts were higher at the contaminated stations compared with less polluted locations. These studies suggest that the croaker is a good species for monitoring contaminants that induce CYP1A- mediated responses. Biliary PAHmetabolites and PAH-DNA adducts were also sensitive indicators of exposure to PAH contamination in both species of fish. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Trace organic (chlorinated pesticides, PCBs, PAHs and dioxins/furans) and trace metal concentrations were measured in surficial sediment and biological tissues (i.e., worms, crustaceans, bivalve molluscs, and fish livers) collected from the Russian Arctic. Total DDT, chlordane, PCB and PAH concentrations ranged from ND to 1.2, ND to <0.1, ND to 1.5 and <20-810 ng g(-1), respectively, in a suite of 40 surficial sediment samples from the Kara Sea and the adjacent Ob and Yenisey Rivers. High sedimentary concentrations of contaminants were found in the lower part of the Yenisey River below the salt wedge. Total dioxins/furans were analysed in a subset of 20 sediment samples and ranged from 1.4 to 410 pg g(-1). The highest trace organic contaminant concentrations were found in organisms, particularly fish livers. Concentrations as high as 89 ng g(-1) chlordane; 1010 ng g(-1) total DDTs; 460 ng g(-1) total PCBs; and 1110 ng g(-1) total PAH, were detected. A subset of 11 tissue samples was analysed for dioxins and furans with total concentrations ranging from 12 to 61 pg g(-1). Concentrations of many trace organic and metal contaminants in the Kara Sea appear to originate from riverine sources and atmospheric transport from more temperate areas. Most organic contaminant concentrations in sediments were low; however, contaminants are being concentrated in organisms and may pose a health hazard for inhabitants of coastal villages.

The main objective of this study was to investigate compositional changes in a range of source- and weathering-dependent molecular parameters in oil residues in the arid terrestrial environment of Al-Alamein, Egypt. The results of aromatic hydrocarbon analysis demonstrated the stability of several aromatic hydrocarbon ratios in oil residues over a wide range of weathering and hydrocarbon concentrations. The ratios of C2-dibenzothiophenes/C2-phenanthrenes (C2-DBTs/C2-PHENs), C3-dibenzothiophenes/C3-phenanthrenes (C3-DBTs/C3-PHENs), C2-chrysenes/C1-chrysenes (C2-CHRYs/C1-CHRYs), and C2-dibenzothiophenes/C1-dibenzothiophenes (C2-DBTs/C1-DBTs) were nearly constant in oil residues of varying degrees of weathering. Biomarker ratios of hopanes and steranes were useful for source identification even for severely weathered oil residues. The data confirmed previous observations that C29 20S/(20S + 20R) and C29 betabeta/(betabeta+ alphaalpha) sterane epimer ratios, and C29/C30, C30 alphabeta(alphabeta + 3alpha), C31 22S/(22S + 22R) hopane ratios correlate well even after extensive weathering of spilled oils, although some exceptions were encountered for an extensively weathered surface sample. The data provided clear evidence of correlation between samples of the weathered oil residues and the possible source oil. Moreover, the results of biomarker compositions were in good agreement with weathering classification based on alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons. In general, samples with lowest pregnane indices (PI) and tricyclic terpane indices (TriTI) showed the lowest concentrations of n-alkanes and alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) homologues, the highest weathering ratios (WRs), the highest values of unresolved complex mixture (UCM)/total resolved peak (TRP) ratios, and the highest ratios of C2 and C3-alkylated CHRYs to their counterparts in the PHEN and DBT series.
