The relation between the resolved star formation rate per unit area and the non-thermal radio continuum emission is studied in 21 Virgo cluster galaxies and the two nearby spiral galaxies, NGC6946 and M51. For the interpretation and understanding of our results we used a 3D model where star formation, 2D cosmic ray (CR) propagation, and the physics of synchrotron emission are included. Based on the linear correlation between the star formation rate per unit area and the synchrotron emission and its scatter radio-bright and radio-dim regions can be robustly defined for our sample of spiral galaxies. We identified CR diffusion or streaming as the physical causes of radio-bright regions of unperturbed symmetric spiral galaxies as NGC6946. We identified the probable causes of radio-bright regions in several galaxies as CR transport, via either gravitational tides (M51) or galactic winds (NGC4532) or ram pressure stripping (NGC4330 and NGC4522). Three galaxies are overall radio-dim: NGC4298, NGC4535, and NGC4567. Based on our model of synchrotron-emitting disks we suggest that the overall radio-dim galaxies have a significantly lower magnetic field than expected by equipartition between the magnetic and turbulent energy densities. Radio-bright regions frequently coincide with asymmetric ridges of polarized radio continuum emission, and we found a clear albeit moderate correlation between the polarized radio continuum emission and the radio/SFR ratio. When compression or shear motions of the interstellar medium (ISM) are present in the galactic disk, the radio-bright regions are linked to the commonly observed asymmetric ridges of polarized radio continuum emission and represent a useful tool for the interaction diagnostics. We present the stellar and ionized gas kinematics of 13 bright peculiar Virgo cluster galaxies observed with the DensePak Integral Field Unit at the WIYN 3.5-meter telescope, to seek kinematic evidence that these galaxies have experienced gravitational interactions or gas stripping. 2-Dimensional maps of the stellar velocity $V$, and stellar velocity dispersion $\sigma$ and the ionized gas velocity (H$\beta$ and/or [\ion{O}{3}]) are presented for galaxies in the sample. The stellar rotation curves and velocity dispersion profiles are determined for 13 galaxies, and the ionized gas rotation curves are determined for 6 galaxies. Misalignments between the optical and kinematical major axis are found in several galaxies. While in some cases this is due to a bar, in other cases it seems associated with a gravitational interaction or ongoing ram pressure stripping. Non-circular gas motions are found in nine galaxies, with various causes including bars, nuclear outflows, or gravitational disturbances. Several galaxies have signatures of kinematically distinct stellar components, which are likely signatures of accretion or mergers. We compute for all galaxies the angular momentum parameter $\lambda_{\rm R}$. An evaluation of the galaxies in the $\lambda_{\rm R}$-ellipticity plane shows that all but 2 of the galaxies have significant support from random stellar motions, and have likely experienced gravitational interactions. This includes some galaxies with very small bulges and truncated/compact H$\alpha$ morphologies, indicating that such galaxies cannot be fully explained by simple ram pressure stripping, but must have had significant gravitational encounters. Most of the sample galaxies show evidence for ICM-ISM stripping as well as gravitational interactions, indicating that the evolution of a significant fraction of cluster galaxies is likely strongly impacted by both effects., Comment: 45 pages, 14 figures, ApJS accepted, emulateapj version

We present IRAM 30m sensitive upper limits on CO emission in the ram pressure stripped dwarf Virgo galaxy IC3418 and in a few positions covering HII regions in its prominent 17 kpc UV/Ha gas-stripped tail. In the central few arcseconds of the galaxy, we report a possible marginal detection of about 1x10^6 M_sun of molecular gas (assuming a Galactic CO-to-H_2 conversion factor) that could correspond to a surviving nuclear gas reservoir. We estimate that there is less molecular gas in the main body of IC3418, by at least a factor of 20, than would be expected from the pre-quenching UV-based star formation rate assuming the typical gas depletion timescale of 2 Gyr. Given the lack of star formation in the main body, we think the H_2-deficiency is real, although some of it may also arise from a higher CO-to-H_2 factor typical in low-metallicity, low-mass galaxies. The presence of HII regions in the tail of IC3418 suggests that there must be some dense gas; however, only upper limits of < 1x10^6 M_sun were found in the three observed points in the outer tail. This yields an upper limit on the molecular gas content of the whole tail < 1x10^7 M_sun, which is an amount similar to the estimates from the observed star formation rate over the tail. We also present strong upper limits on the X-ray emission of the stripped gas in IC3418 from a new Chandra observation. The measured X-ray luminosity of the IC3418 tail is about 280 times lower than that of ESO 137-001, a spiral galaxy in a more distant cluster with a prominent ram pressure stripped tail. Non-detection of any diffuse X-ray emission in the IC3418 tail may be due to a low gas content in the tail associated with its advanced evolutionary state and/or due to a rather low thermal pressure of the surrounding intra-cluster medium., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, A&A accepted

Deep scaled array VLA 20 and 6cm observations including polarization of 19 Virgo spirals are presented. This sample contains 6 galaxies with a global minimum of 20cm polarized emission at the receding side of the galactic disk and quadrupolar type large-scale magnetic fields. In the new sample no additional case of a ram-pressure stripped spiral galaxy with an asymmetric ridge of polarized radio continuum emission was found. In the absence of a close companion, a truncated HI disk, together with a ridge of polarized radio continuum emission at the outer edge of the HI disk, is a signpost of ram pressure stripping. 6 out of the 19 observed galaxies display asymmetric 6cm polarized emission distributions. Three galaxies belong to tidally interacting pairs, two galaxies host huge accreting HI envelopes, and one galaxy had a recent minor merger. Tidal interactions and accreting gas envelopes can lead to compression and shear motions which enhance the polarized radio continuum emission. In addition, galaxies with low average star formation rate per unit area have a low average degree of polarization. Shear or compression motions can enhance the degree of polarization. The average degree of polarization of tidally interacting galaxies is generally lower than expected for a given rotation velocity and star formation activity. This low average degree of polarization is at least partly due to the absence of polarized emission from the thin disk. Ram pressure stripping can decrease whereas tidal interactions most frequently decreases the average degree of polarization of Virgo spiral galaxies. We found that moderate active ram pressure stripping has no influence on the spectral index, but enhances the global radio continuum emission with respect to the FIR emission, while an accreting gas envelope can but not necessarily enhances the radio continuum emission with respect to the FIR emission., Comment: 37 pages, 26 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present a new study of the Virgo Cluster galaxies M86, M84, NGC 4338, and NGC 4438 using a mosaic of five separate pointings with XMM-Newton. Our observations allow for robust measurements of the temperature and metallicity structure of each galaxy along with the entire ~ 1 degree region between these galaxies. When combined with multiwavelength observations, the data suggest that all four of these galaxies are undergoing ram pressure stripping by the Intracluster Medium (ICM). The manner in which the stripped gas trailing the galaxies interacts with the ICM, however, is observably distinct. Consistent with previous observations, M86 is observed to have a long tail of ~ 1 keV gas trailing to the north-west for distances of ~ 100-150 kpc. However, a new site of ~ 0.6 keV thermal emission is observed to span to the east of M86 in the direction of the disturbed spiral galaxy NGC 4438. This region is spatially coincident with filaments of H-alpha emission, likely originating in a recent collision between the two galaxies. We also resolve the thermodynamic structure of stripped ~ 0.6 keV gas to the south of M84, suggesting that this galaxy is undergoing both AGN feedback and ram pressure stripping simultaneously. The influence of the environment on gas surface density and star formation efficiency of cluster spiral galaxies is investigated. We extend previous work on radial profiles by a pixel-to pixel analysis looking for asymmetries due to environmental interactions. The star formation rate is derived from GALEX UV and Spitzer total infrared data. As in field galaxies, the star formation rate for most Virgo galaxies is approximately proportional to the molecular gas mass. Except for NGC 4438, the cluster environment does not affect the star formation efficiency with respect to the molecular gas. Gas truncation is not associated with major changes in the total gas surface density distribution of the inner disk of Virgo spiral galaxies. In three galaxies, possible increases in the molecular fraction and the star formation efficiency with respect to the total gas, of factors of 1.5 to 2, are observed on the windward side of the galactic disk. A significant increase of the star formation efficiency with respect to the molecular gas content on the windward side of ram pressure-stripped galaxies is not observed. The ram-pressure stripped extraplanar gas of 3 highly inclined spiral galaxies shows a depressed star formation efficiency with respect to the total gas, and one of them (NGC 4438) shows a depressed rate even with respect to the molecular gas. The interpretation is that stripped gas loses the gravitational confinement and associated pressure of the galactic disk, and the gas flow is diverging, so the gas density decreases and the star formation rate drops. However, the stripped extraplanar gas in one highly inclined galaxy (NGC 4569) shows a normal star formation efficiency with respect to the total gas. We propose this galaxy is different because it is observed long after peak pressure, and its extraplanar gas is now in a converging flow as it resettles back into the disk., Comment: 34 pages, 24 figures, accepted for publication by A&A

It has been shown that the Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4330 shows signs of ongoing ram pressure stripping in multiple wavelengths: at the leading edge of the interaction, the Halpha and dust extinction curve sharply out of the disk; on the trailing side, a long Halpha/UV tail has been found which is located upwind of a long HI tail. We complete the multiwavelength study with IRAM 30m HERA CO(2-1) and VLA 6 cm radio continuum observations of NGC 4330. The data are interpreted with the help of a dynamical model including ram pressure and, for the first time, star formation. Our best-fit model reproduces qualitatively the observed projected position, radial velocity of the galaxy, the molecular and atomic gas distribution and velocity field, and the UV distribution in the region where a gas tail is present. However, the observed red UV color on the windward side is currently not reproduced by the model. Based on our model, the galaxy moves to the north and still approaches the cluster center with the closest approach occurring in ~100 Myr. In contrast to other Virgo spiral galaxies affected by ram pressure stripping, NGC 4330 does not show an asymmetric ridge of polarized radio continuum emission. We suggest that this is due to the relatively slow compression of the ISM and the particular projection of NGC 4330. The observed offset between the HI and UV tails is well reproduced by our model. Since collapsing and starforming gas clouds decouple from the ram pressure wind, the UV-emitting young stars have the angular momentum of the gas at the time of their creation. On the other hand, the gas is constantly pushed by ram pressure. We present near-infrared VLT ISAAC imaging and spectroscopy of the peculiar Virgo galaxy NGC 4438, whose nucleus has been classified as a LINER. The data are supplemented by mid-infrared imaging, and compared to previous WFPC2 HST broadband images. Images and position-velocity maps of the [Fe II] and H2 line emissions are presented and compared with the distribution of the optical narrow-line region and radio features. Our results show that shocks (possibly driven by a radio jet) contribute to an important fraction of the excitation of [Fe II], while X-ray heating from a central AGN may be responsible for the H2 excitation. We address the question whether the outflow has an AGN or a starburst origin by providing new estimates of the central star formation rate and the kinetic energy associated with the gas. By fitting a Sersic bulge, an exponential disc and a compact nuclear source to the light distribution, we decomposed NGC 4438's light distribution and found an unresolved nuclear source at 0.8 arcsec resolution with M_K = -18.7 and J-H = 0.69. Our measured bulge velocity dispersion, 142 km/s, together with the standard M_bh-sigma relation, suggests a central black hole mass of log(M_bh/Msun) ~ 7.0. The stellar kinematics measured from the near-infrared CO lines shows a strong peak in the velocity dispersion of 178 km/s in the central 0.5 arcsec, which is possible kinematic evidence of a central black hole. (abridged) We present a study on the effects of the intracluster medium (ICM) on the interstellar medium (ISM) of 10 Virgo cluster spiral galaxies using {\it Spitzer} far-infrared (FIR) and VLA radio continuum imaging. Relying on the FIR-radio correlation within normal galaxies, we use our infrared data to create model radio maps which we compare to the observed radio images. For 6 of our sample galaxies we find regions along their outer edges that are highly deficient in the radio compared with our models. We believe these observations are the signatures of ICM ram pressure. For NGC 4522 we find the radio deficit region to lie just exterior to a region of high radio polarization and flat radio spectral index, although the total 20 cm radio continuum in this region does not appear strongly enhanced. These characteristics seem consistent for other galaxies with radio polarization data in the literature. The strength of the radio deficit is inversely correlated with the time since peak pressure as inferred from stellar population studies and gas stripping simulations, suggesting the strength of the radio deficit is good indicator of the strength of the current ram pressure. We also find that galaxies having {\it local} radio {\it deficits} appear to have {\it enhanced global} radio fluxes. Our preferred physical picture is that the observed radio deficit regions arise from the ICM wind sweeping away cosmic-ray (CR) electrons and the associated magnetic field, thereby creating synchrotron tails as observed for some of our galaxies. We propose that CR particles are also re-accelerated by ICM-driven shocklets behind the observed radio deficit regions which in turn enhances the remaining radio disk brightness., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures; Astrophysical Journal

Deep wide-field H$\alpha$+[NII] imaging around the Virgo cluster giant elliptical galaxy M86 reveals a highly complex and disturbed ISM/ICM. The most striking feature is a set of H$\alpha$ filaments which clearly connect M86 with the nearby disturbed spiral NGC 4438 (23$'$=120 kpc projected away), providing strong evidence for a previously unrecognized collision between them. Spectroscopy of selected regions show a fairly smooth velocity gradient between M86 and NGC 4438, consistent with the collision scenario. Such a collision would impart significant energy into the ISM of M86, probably heating the gas and acting to prevent the gas from cooling to form stars. We propose that cool gas stripped from NGC 4438 during the collision and deposited in its wake is heated by shocks, ram pressure drag, or thermal conduction, producing most of the H$\alpha$ filaments. Some H$\alpha$ filaments are associated with the well-known ridge of bright X-ray emission to the NW of the nucleus, suggesting that the collision is responsible for peculiarities of M86 previously ascribed to other effects. M86 is radio-quiet, thus AGN heating is unlikely to play a significant role. The M86 system has implications for understanding the role of gravitational interactions in the heating of the ISM in ellipticals, and how collisions in clusters transform galaxies., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. We present results on the interstellar medium (ISM) properties of 29 galaxies based on a comparison of {\it Spitzer} far-infrared and Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope radio continuum imagery. Of these 29 galaxies, 18 are close enough to resolve at $\la$1 kpc scales at 70 $\micron$ and 22 cm. We extend the \citet{ejm06a,ejm06b} approach of smoothing infrared images to approximate cosmic-ray (CR) electron spreading and thus largely reproduce the appearance of radio images. Using a wavelet analysis we decompose each 70 $\micron$ image into one component containing the star-forming {\it structures} and a second one for the diffuse {\it disk}. The components are smoothed separately, and their combination compared to a free-free corrected 22 cm radio image; the scale-lengths are then varied to best match the radio and smoothed infrared images. We find that late-type spirals having high amounts of ongoing star formation benefit most from the two-component method. We also find that the disk component dominates for galaxies having low star formation activity, whereas the structure component dominates at high star formation activity. We propose that this result arises from an age effect rather than from differences in CR electron diffusion due to varying ISM parameters. The bulk of the CR electron population in actively star-forming galaxies is significantly younger than that in less active galaxies due to recent episodes of enhanced star formation; these galaxies are observed within $\sim10^{8}$ yr since the onset of the most recent star formation episode. VIVA HI observations of the Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4501 are presented. The HI disk is sharply truncated to the southwest, well within the stellar disk. A region of low surface-density gas, which is more extended than the main HI disk, is discovered northeast of the galaxy center. These data are compared to existing 6cm polarized radio continuum emission, Halpha, and optical broad band images. We observe a coincidence between the western HI and polarized emission edges, on the one hand, and a faint Halpha emission ridge, on the other. The polarized emission maxima are located within the gaps between the spiral arms and the faint Halpha ridge. Based on the comparison of these observations with a sample of dynamical simulations with different values for maximum ram pressure and different inclination angles between the disk and the orbital plane,we conclude that ram pressure stripping can account for the main observed characteristics. NGC 4501 is stripped nearly edge-on, is heading southwest, and is ~200-300 Myr before peak ram pressure, i.e. its closest approach to M87. The southwestern ridge of enhanced gas surface density and enhanced polarized radio-continuum emission is due to ram pressure compression. It is argued that the faint western Halpha emission ridge is induced by nearly edge-on ram pressure stripping. Using data obtained for twelve galaxies as part of the {\it Spitzer} Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) and the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT)-SINGS radio continuum survey, we study how star formation activity affects the far-infrared (FIR)--radio correlation {\it within} galaxies by testing a phenomenological model, which describes the radio image as a smeared version of the FIR image. The physical basis of this description is that cosmic-ray (CR) electrons will diffuse measurably farther than the mean free path of dust-heating photons before decaying by synchrotron radiation. This description works well in general. Galaxies with higher infrared surface brightnesses have best-fit smoothing scale-lengths of a few hundred parsecs, substantially shorter than those for lower surface brightness galaxies. We interpret this result to suggest that galaxies with higher disk averaged star formation rates have had a recent episode of enhanced star formation and are characterized by a higher fraction of young CR electrons that have traveled only a few hundred parsecs from their acceleration sites in supernova remnants compared to galaxies with lower star formation activity., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

Using data obtained as part of the {\it Spitzer} Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS; Kennicutt et al. 2003) and WSRT-SINGS radio continuum survey (Braun et al. 2006), we study the effects of star-formation activity on the far-infrared (FIR)--radio correlation {\it within} galaxies. This is done by testing a phenomenological model for the correlation, which describes the radio image as a smeared version of the FIR image. We find that this description works particularly well for galaxies with higher infrared surface brightnesses, yielding best-fit smoothing scale-lengths of a few hundred parsecs, substantially shorter than those for lower surface brightness galaxies. A dynamical model including ram pressure stripping is applied to the strongly HI deficient Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4522. A carefully chosen model snapshot is compared with existing VLA HI observations. The model successfully reproduces the large-scale gas distribution and the velocity field. However it fails to reproduce the large observed HI linewidths in the extraplanar component, for which we give possible explanations. In a second step, we solve the induction equation on the velocity fields of the dynamical model and calculate the large scale magnetic field. Assuming a Gaussian distribution of relativistic electrons we obtain the distribution of polarized radio continuum emission which is also compared with our VLA observations at 6 cm. The observed maximum of the polarized radio continuum emission is successfully reproduced. Our model suggests that the ram pressure maximum occurred only ~50 Myr ago. Since NGC 4522 is located far away from the cluster center (~1 Mpc) where the intracluster medium density is too low to cause the observed stripping if the intracluster medium is static and smooth, two scenarios are envisaged: (i) the galaxy moves very rapidly within the intracluster medium and is not even bound to the cluster; in this case the galaxy has just passed the region of highest intracluster medium density; (ii) the intracluster medium is not static but moving due to the infall of the M49 group of galaxies. In this case the galaxy has just passed the region of highest intracluster medium velocity. We present an analysis of the far-infrared (FIR)-radio correlation within a group of nearby star-forming galaxy disks observed as part of the {\it Spitzer} Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS). In our study we critically test a phenomenological model for the FIR-radio correlation which describes the radio image as a smeared version of the infrared image. The physical basis for this model is that cosmic-ray electrons (CR electrons) will diffuse significant distances from their originating sources before decaying by synchrotron emission. We find that this description generally works well, improving the correlation between the radio and infrared images of our four sample galaxies by an average factor of $\sim$1.6. We also find that the best-fit smearing kernels seem to show a dependence on the ongoing star formation activity within each disk. Galaxies having lower star formation activity (NGC 2403 and NGC 3031) are best-fit using larger smearing kernels than galaxies with more active star-forming disks (NGC 5194 and NGC 6946). We present a detailed study of the peculiar HI-deficient Virgo cluster spiral galaxies NGC 4064 and NGC 4424, using $^{12}$CO 1-0 interferometry, optical imaging and integral-field spectroscopic observations, in order to learn what type of environmental interactions have afected these galaxies. Optical imaging reveals that NGC 4424 has a strongly disturbed stellar disk, with banana-shaped isophotes and shells. NGC 4064, which lies in the cluster outskirts, possesses a relatively undisturbed outer stellar disk and a central bar. In both galaxies H-alpha emission is confined to the central kiloparsec. CO observations reveal bilobal molecular gas morphologies, with H-alpha emission peaking inside the CO lobes, implying a time sequence in the star formation process.Gas kinematics reveals strong bar-like non-circular motions in the molecular gas in both galaxies, suggesting that the material is radially infalling. In NGC 4064 the stellar kinematics reveal strong bar-like non-circular motions in the central 1 kpc. On the other hand, NGC 4424 has extremely modest stellar rotation velocities (Vmax ~ 30 km s-1), and stars are supported by random motions as far out as we can measure it. The observations suggest that the peculiarities of NGC 4424 are the result of an intermediate-mass merger plus ram pressure stripping. In the case of NGC 4064, the evidence suggests an already stripped "truncated/normal" galaxy that recently suffered a minor merger or tidal interaction with another galaxy. We propose that galaxies with "truncated/compact" H-alpha morphologies such as these are the result of the independent effects of ram pressure stripping, which removes gas from the outer disk, and gravitational interactions such as mergers, which heat stellar disks, drive gas to the central kpc and increase the central mass concentrations., Comment: 42 pages, 21 figures

(Abridged) We present an initial look at the far infrared-radio correlation within the star-forming disks of four nearby, nearly face-on galaxies (NGC 2403, NGC 3031, NGC 5194, and NGC 6946). Using Spitzer MIPS imaging and WSRT radio continuum data, observed as part of the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS), we are able to probe variations in the logarithmic 24mu/22cm (q_24) and 70mu/22cm (q_70) surface brightness ratios across each disk at sub-kpc scales. We find general trends of decreasing q_24 and q_70 with declining surface brightness and with increasing radius. The residual dispersion around the trend of q_24 and q_70 versus surface brightness is smaller than the residual dispersion around the trend of q_24 and q_70 versus radius, on average by ~0.1 dex, indicating that the distribution of star formation sites is more important in determining the infrared/radio disk appearance than the exponential profiles of disks. We have also performed preliminary phenomenological modeling of cosmic ray electron (CRe^-) diffusion using an image-smearing technique, and find that smoothing the infrared maps improves their correlation with the radio maps. Exponential kernels tend to work better than Gaussian kernels which suggests that additional processes besides simple random-walk diffusion in three dimensions must affect the evolution of CRe^-s. The best fit smoothing kernels for the two less active star-forming galaxies (NGC 2403 and NGC 3031) have much larger scale-lengths than those of the more active star-forming galaxies (NGC 5194 and NGC 6946). This difference may be due to the relative deficit of recent CRe^- injection into the interstellar medium (ISM) for the galaxies having largely quiescent disks., Comment: 41 pages including 6 tables and 12 figures; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. Radio continuum observations at 20 and 6 cm of the highly inclined Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4522 are presented. Both, 20 and 6 cm total emission distributions are asymmetric with an extended component to the west where extraplanar atomic gas and Halpha emission are found. The 6 cm polarized emission is located at the eastern edge of the galactic disk. Its peak is located about 1 kpc to the east of the total emission peak. We argue that this phenomena is a characteristic feature for cluster galaxies which are experiencing significant pressure from the intracluster medium. The degree of polarization decreases from the east to the west. The flattest spectral index between 20 and 6 cm coincides with the peak of the 6 cm polarized emission. These findings are consistent with a picture of a large scale shock due to ram pressure located at the east of the galaxy where cosmic rays are accelerated. Narrow-band Halpha and broadband R images and radial profiles are presented for 63 bright spiral galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. The sample is complete for Sb-Scd galaxies with B magnitude less than 12 and inclination less than 75 degrees. We report on the 2.5 arcsec (400 pc) resolution CO (J = 1 -> 0) observations covering the whole length of the bar in the strongly barred late-type spiral galaxy NGC 7479. CO emission is detected only along a dust lane that traverses the whole length of the bar, including the nucleus. The emission is strongest in the nucleus. The distribution of emission is clumpy along the bar outside the nucleus, and consists of gas complexes that are unlikely to be gravitationally bound. The CO kinematics within the bar consist of two separate components. A kinematically distinct circumnuclear disk, < 500 pc in diameter, is undergoing predominantly circular motion with a maximum rotational velocity of 245 km/s at a radius of 1 arcsec (160 pc). The CO-emitting gas in the bar outside the circumnuclear disk has substantial noncircular motions which are consistent with a large radial velocity component, directed inwards. The CO emission has a large velocity gradient across the bar dust lane, ranging from 0.5 to 1.9 km/s/pc after correcting for inclination, and the projected velocity change across the dust lane is as high as 200 km/s. This sharp velocity gradient is consistent with a shock front at the location of the bar dust lane. A comparison of H-alpha and CO kinematics across the dust lane shows that although the H-alpha emission is often observed both upstream and downstream from the dust lane, the CO emission is observed only where the velocity gradient is large. Quantitative measures of central light concentration and star formation activity are derived from R and Halpha surface photometry of 84 bright S0-Scd Virgo Cluster and isolated spiral galaxies. For isolated spirals, there is a good correlation between these two parameters and assigned Hubble types. In the Virgo Cluster, the correlation between central light concentration and star formation activity is significantly weaker. Virgo Cluster spirals have systematically reduced global star formation with respect to isolated spirals, with severe reduction in the outer disk, but normal or enhanced activity in the inner disk. Assigned Hubble types are thus inadequate to describe the range in morphologies of bright Virgo Cluster spirals. In particular, spirals with reduced global star formation activity are often assigned misleading early-type classifications, irrespective of their central light concentrations. 45+-25% of the galaxies classified as Sa in the Virgo Cluster sample have central light concentrations more characteristic of isolated Sb-Sc galaxies. The misleading classification of low concentration galaxies with low star formation rates as early-type spirals may account for part of the excess of `early-type' spiral galaxies in clusters. Thus the morphology-density relationship is not all due to a systematic increase in the bulge-to-disk ratio with environmental density., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters. We have made deconvolved maps of M101 in each of the 4 IRAS bands using a new maximum-entropy based model for reconstructing distributions with correlated structure on multiple scales. This new deconvolution procedure, developed by Weir (1992, J.Opt.Soc.Am., submitted), is superior to other maximum entropy-based techniques for several reasons. For our purposes, an important advantage is that it has less artifacts and greatly reduced systematic biases compared with the 'HiRes' maps of M101 produced by Aumann, Fowler, and Melnyk (1990, AJ, 99, 1674), thus it is accurate enough to perform aperture photometry. The deconvolved maps have a maximum resolution of approximately 30 sec, sufficient to resolve the brightest HII complexes and much of the spiral structure. The new maps and our comparison of the far-infrared, gas, and optical distributions are being written up in Kenney, Weir & Scoville (1992, in preparation). The quality of the reconstructed far-infrared maps is good enough for us to carry out most of the analyses outlined in the original proposal. From a ratio of the 60 micron and 100 micron maps, we have found that the ultraluminous HII complexes in the outer galaxy have the hottest dust temperatures with T approximately 50-60 K, which is twice as hot as most of the disk. Their extraordinary luminosity in the far-infrared is due to a relatively small amount of dust being heated to high temperatures, rather than a large concentration of dust and gas. A map of the dust opacity at 60 microns shows good overall agreement with a map of cold gas (HI+H2), indicating that throughout most of the galaxy only approximately 20 percent of the dust is warm enough to be detected by IRAS. The ultraluminous HII complexes have a high luminosity-to-gas mass ratio, independent of whether the far-infrared or the H-alpha emission line is used to measure the luminosity, which implies that gas is being converted into high mass stars more rapidly in these complexes compared to other locations in the disk.
