Many effective strategies exist to keep students safe, supported, and engaged in school. Restorative practice (RP) is a powerful approach for achieving these goals as it elevates student voice and can strengthen school climate. Annie M. White and John Kenneth Weiss share findings from an initiative through which high school student-faculty teams learned strategies to use RP practices and incorporate student voice to improve school climate. After two years, students gained the confidence to work for school change. They offer implementation recommendations, including prioritizing relationship-building, reaching a critical mass, and providing structure for engagement. Ultimately, they found that student voice and engagement may be key to improving school climate.

This paper aims to provide strategies for youth-serving organizations to maximize opportunities for youth to develop leadership skills within the out-of-school time program context. The sample includes 5 youth-serving agencies who participated in the Youth Driven Spaces initiative led by a Midwest program. Data for this project included observations of youth–adult meetings, field notes from youths’ reflections on key model activities, and interviews with adult staff to identify common challenges and supportive solutions. We identified 6 emergent themes for supporting youth leadership: (a) engage youth in meetings, (b) create opportunities for youth to learn how to be leaders, (c) recognize resistance to youth voice, (d) encourage youth and adults to share constructive feedback, (e) navigate youth–adult boundaries, and (f) practice intentional strategies to retain youth and to onboard new youth and staff. Results provide concrete strategies for practitioners and researchers to empower youth with the skills and resources they need to be effective leaders.

We address the problem of performing efficient spatial and topological queries on large tetrahedral meshes with arbitrary topology and complex boundaries. Such meshes arise in several application domains, such as 3D Geographic Information Systems (GISs), scientific visualization, and finite element analysis. To this aim, we propose Tetrahedral trees , a family of spatial indexes based on a nested space subdivision (an octree or a kD-tree) and defined by several different subdivision criteria. We provide efficient algorithms for spatial and topological queries on Tetrahedral trees and compare to state-of-the-art approaches. Our results indicate that Tetrahedral trees are an improvement over R * -trees for querying tetrahedral meshes; they are more compact, faster in many queries, and stable at variations of construction thresholds. They also support spatial queries on more general domains than topological data structures, which explicitly encode adjacency information for efficient navigation but have difficulties with domains with a non-trivial geometric or topological shape.

Background Osteonecrosis of the hips and knees is an often debilitating adverse event in children treated with glucocorticoids for leukemia and lymphoma but the impact of shoulder involvement has been understudied. Thus, we investigated the severity and functional impairment of shoulder osteonecrosis in a well-characterized population of pediatric patients treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia or lymphoma. Methods We retrospectively reviewed orthopaedic clinic and physical therapy evaluations to determine range of motion (ROM), pain, and impact of magnetic resonance-defined osteonecrosis (ON) on activities of daily living. Adverse events were classified according to the National Cancer Institute's Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 4.03. Results We identified 35 patients (22 female), median age at cancer diagnosis 14.2 (range, 4.3 to 19) years; median age at ON diagnosis 16.7 (range, 5.5 to 28) years. Median time to last follow-up from diagnosis of primary malignancy was 6.4 (range, 0 to 12.7) years and from diagnosis of ON was 4.0 (range, 0 to 8.9) years. Twenty-two patients had magnetic resonance evidence of ON; 43 shoulders involved at least 30% of the articular surface of the capital humeral epiphyses.Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events mean scores for initial assessments of 55 shoulders (29 patients) showed moderate negative impact of ON on activity of daily living (1.94), decreased ROM limiting athletic activity (0.98), and mild to moderate levels of pain (1.38). Analysis of this group's most recent assessment showed improvement in pain and ON over time, with an average pain grade of 0.58 indicating no pain to mild pain, and 1.37 for ON grade, indicating asymptomatic to mildly symptomatic impact on activities of daily living. We also found minimal worsening average ROM grades (1.11). Conclusions Shoulder ON is an underappreciated adverse late effect of therapy in children treated for leukemia/lymphoma which can limit quality of life and functionality. In most cases, pain and disability can be improved with treatment. Level of evidence Level IV-case series.

Poor lifestyle choices play a significant role in the development and progression of preventable chronic diseases, including cancer. In this study, we evaluate the effectiveness of a comprehensive lifestyle medicine intervention on chronic disease risk factors and quality of life in breast cancer survivors.This is a retrospective review of a clinical program from January 2016 to July 2017.It includes seven 2-h group medical visits held every other week at an outpatient wellness facility.Eligible participants are breast cancer survivors who have completed treatment, including those who remain on hormonal therapy.Patients receive education and experience in nutrition, culinary medicine, physical activity, and stress relief practices.Participants' weight, body mass index (BMI), body fat mass, lean body mass, and percent body fat were measured at visit 1 and visit 7. Standard validated questionnaires were used to measure perceived stress, depression, patient activation, physical and mental quality of life, dietary fat consumption, and dietary fruit, vegetable, and fiber consumption.A total of 31 patients participated in the group visits. Pre-post comparison data were not available for 10 patients. More than three-quarters of the 21 breast cancer survivors who attended 5 or more of the 7 group visits and provided data at the first and the last group visit decreased their body weight. On average, patients lost 4.9 pounds (-2.6%, p 0.01), and their BMI decreased by 0.8 kg/mBreast cancer survivors could employ the prescribed lifestyle modifications to produce clinically relevant health benefits. Interdisciplinary teams of health care professionals may help breast cancer survivors with chronic diseases implement evidence-based, individualized, and effective lifestyle prescription through group medical visits.

We introduce the Stellar decomposition, a model for efficient topological data structures over a broad range of simplicial and cell complexes. A Stellar decomposition of a complex is a collection of regions indexing the complex’s vertices and cells such that each region has sufficient information to locally reconstruct the star of its vertices, i.e., the cells incident in the region’s vertices. Stellar decompositions are general in that they can compactly represent and efficiently traverse arbitrary complexes with a manifold or non-manifold domain. They are scalable to complexes in high dimension and of large size, and they enable users to easily construct tailored application-dependent data structures using a fraction of the memory required by a corresponding global topological data structure on the complex. As a concrete realization of this model for spatially embedded complexes, we introduce the Stellar tree, which combines a nested spatial tree with a simple tuning parameter to control the number of vertices in a region. Stellar trees exploit the complex’s spatial locality by reordering vertex and cell indices according to the spatial decomposition and by compressing sequential ranges of indices. Stellar trees are competitive with state-of-the-art topological data structures for manifold simplicial complexes and offer significant improvements for cell complexes and non-manifold simplicial complexes. We conclude with a high-level description of several mesh processing and analysis applications that utilize Stellar trees to process large datasets.

For many educational institutions the World Wide Web has become a major avenue of communication with its constituencies. Students, potential students, faculty, staff, people at other institutions and the general public are all directing their questions to the e‐mail address www@institution.edu The personnel that receive this mail are often ill‐prepared for the quantity and variety of questions that arrive. This paper examines the evolution of this problem over the first four years of UC Davis’ use of the Web, and presents some of the strategies that have proven useful for managing this onslaught.

This article focuses on the interrelationship between Sino‐U.S. cooperation in commercial space and Chinese missile proliferation activities—specifically to what extent did U.S. cooperation with China contribute to Chinese restraint on ballistic missile proliferation issues. Technological cooperation can be a useful tool in gaining a country's observance of missile nonproliferation norms. However, the U.S. should continue this cooperation only if the Chinese observe their Missile Technology Control Regime commitments, and the U.S. enforces stringent technology transfer safeguards.

To contain the fallout from the South Asia nuclear tests, the United States needs to address the issue both in terms of collective security and balance of power politics. The U.S. government needs to maintain its sanctions commitment because U.S. credibility depends on its willingness to impose penalties on proliferators even the penalties that harm U.S. interests. Stronger efforts must be made to engage Russia and China in developing a coordinated nonproliferation approach. This might involve an international conference of the five established nuclear powers, plus India and Pakistan.

We consider the problem of computing discrete Morse and Morse-Smale complexes on an unstructured tetrahedral mesh discretizing the domain of a 3D scalar field. We use a duality argument to define the cells of the descending Morse complex in terms of the supplied (primal) tetrahedral mesh and those of the ascending complex in terms of its dual mesh. The Morse-Smale complex is then described combinatorially as collections of cells from the intersection of the primal and dual meshes. We introduce a simple compact encoding for discrete vector fields attached to the mesh tetrahedra that is suitable for combination with any topological data structure encoding just the vertices and tetrahedra of the mesh. We demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of our approach over large unstructured tetrahedral meshes by developing algorithms for computing the discrete gradient field and for extracting the cells of the Morse and Morse-Smale complexes. We compare implementations of our approach on an adjacency-based topological data structure and on the PR-star octree, a compact spatio-topological data structure.

We investigate a morphological approach to the analysis and understanding of three-dimensional scalar fields, and we consider applications to 3D medical and molecular images as examples.We consider a discrete model of the scalar field obtained by discretizing its 3D domain into a tetrahedral mesh. In particular, our meshes correspond to approximations at uniform or variable resolution extracted from a multi-resolution model of the 3D scalar field, that we call a hierarchy of diamonds. We analyze the images based on the concept of discrete distortion, that we have introduced in [26], and on segmentations based on Morse theory. Discrete distortion is defined by considering the graph of the discrete 3D field, which is a tetrahedral hypersurface in R 4, and measuring the distortion of the transformation which maps the tetrahedral mesh discretizing the scalar field domain into the mesh representing its graph in R 4. We describe a segmentation algorithm to produce Morse decompositions of a 3D scalar field which uses a watershed approach and we apply it to 3D images by using as scalar field both intensity and discrete distortion. We present experimental results by considering the influence of resolution on distortion computation. In particular, we show that the salient features of the distortion field appear prominently in lower resolution approximations to the dataset.
