Raney-Nickel ist einer der am meisten verwendeten Katalysatoren in der industriellen Praxis für die Umwandlung von biogenen Molekülen. Der Einfluss verschiedener Alkohole auf die katalytische Aktivität von Raney-Nickel bei der Hydrierung von Phenol zu Cyclohexanol wurde untersucht und die Hemmung des Katalysators nimmt von sekundären Alkoholen über primäre Alkohole zu Polyolen ab. In-situ ATR-IR-Spektroskopie zeigte, dass 2-PrOH an mindestens zwei chemisch verschiedenen Stellen auf der Oberfläche von Raney-Nickel adsorbiert. Die Bevorzugung der Hydrierung des aromatischen Ringes gegenüber der Abspaltung der Methoxyfunktion könnte mit der relativen Schwächung der durch ATR-IR gemessenen aromatischen Ringschwingungen zusammenhängen. Diese Beobachtung wurde durch NMR-Messungen unterstützt, die feststellen konnten, dass die ortho-Position des aromatischen Ringes 1H mit 2H schneller als die meta- und para-Positionen austauscht.

Despite its potential as a raw material for the fuel and chemical industries, lignin remains the most poorly utilised of the lignocellulosic biopolymers. Effective valorisation of lignin requires careful fine-tuning of multiple “upstream” (i.e., lignin bioengineering, lignin isolation and “early-stage catalytic conversion of lignin”) and “downstream” (i.e., lignin depolymerisation and upgrading) process stages, demanding input and understanding from a broad array of scientific disciplines. This review provides a “beginning-to-end” analysis of the recent advances reported in lignin valorisation. Particular emphasis is placed on the improved understanding of lignins biosynthesis and structure, differences in structure and chemical bonding between native and technical lignins, emerging catalytic valorisation strategies, and the relationships between lignin structure and catalyst performance.

Hydrogen production peaked at the onset of dry reforming conditions and was followed by a steady state region of lower H2 production. The high initial H2 production was related to carbon deposition on the Ni surface in the peak region of the product gas profile through the decomposition of CH4, which was determined to occur at a faster rate than carbon removal through the Boudouard reaction. Decreased H2 production from the peak to the steady state region of the product gas profile was directly related to decreased reactivity of the CH4 decomposition reaction. Carbon deposition was determined to be amorphous at all reaction temperatures with varying proportions of sp3 hybridization in the carbon layer and evidence suggesting two separate mechanisms of carbon deposition was observed.
