The Arcsecond Space Telescope Enabling Research in Astrophysics (ASTERIA) was a 6-unit CubeSat technology demonstration mission that was built at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and deployed from the International Space Station (ISS) on November 20th, 2017. After successfully completing its 90-day primary mission that demonstrated arcsecond-level line-of-sight pointing and focal plane thermal stability for exoplanet detection, it entered an extended mission performing onboard software demonstrations alongside science until end of mission in December 2019. At the end of its lifetime it was being used as a demonstration platform for several experiments, including low earth orbit (LEO) optical navigation operations. With its visible light astrometric camera and stable attitude control system, the ASTERIA spacecraft showed itself to be a capable platform for the imaging of geosynchronous satellites from LEO. This paper will describe the imagery attained in flight and also the image processing algorithms that were developed to render that imagery into navigation quality data. These algorithms dealt with hot pixel filtering, noise modeling, attitude registration, star signal rejection and satellite signal identification. Brightness prediction algorithms used for target selection will also be discussed.

The OSIRIS-REx Independent Shape Modeling Team, staffed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), has used stereophotoclinometry (SPC) to produce a three-dimensional shape model of Bennu. The SPC process is informed by (but is separate from) orbit determination, so it is important to ensure that the resulting shape model is consistent with all available spacecraft tracking data. Specifically, checking the shape model’s consistency with LIDAR measurements can illuminate any discrepancies, because LIDAR measurements are highly correlated with the shape model. This study focuses on the JPL experience with these LIDAR measurements and the greater context of the shape model validation process.

For the lunar Gateway, the optical only version is sufficient given the abundance of optical targets in the form of lunar surface landmarks.

On October 23, 2015, the Dawn spacecraft left the High Altitude Mapping Orbit (HAMO) around Ceres and began its final decent to the Low Altitude Mapping Orbit (LAMO), arriving on December 15. The transfer between the two science orbits, a tight spiraling trajectory with over 100 revolutions, required the operations team to perform weekly maneuver designs for a period of 50 days. While the first six weeks of the transfer executed as planned, unexpectedly the spacecraft incurred a multi-sigma delivery error to the final science orbit that was subsequently clean-up at the first orbit maintenance maneuver. In this paper we discuss the design architecture for the transfer in detail, including challenges the team faced in flying the transfer and lessons learned.

In mid-2014 the Dawn team finalized preparations for the spacecraft’s approach to Ceres. The design was the product of careful planning that began several years in advance, when the spacecraft left Vesta in September 2012. However, a few months prior to the anticipated start of approach, the spacecraft entered a safe mode. While temporary loss of thrust for ion propulsion missions is usually not mission-critical, it still presents many challenges. The safing event occurred at a time when thrusting to match Ceres’ orbital velocity was most effective, which meant the spacecraft must fly past Ceres before capturing into orbit. The new approach geometry changed the team’s strategy for navigating the spacecraft safely into orbit around Ceres with optical data. In this paper we describe the challenges of navigating the Dawn spacecraft into orbit around Ceres, including the safing event and re-design of the approach architecture.

The Dawn spacecraft was launched on September 27th, 2007. Its mission is to rendezvous with and observe the two largest bodies in the main asteroid belt, Vesta and Ceres. It has completed over a year’s worth of direct observations of Vesta from early 2011 through late 2012. In the spring of 2015, the Dawn spacecraft entered orbit around the asteroid Ceres for the start of what is expected to be more than a year of science operations. The science data collected from this encounter consist of infrared (IR) images and spectra, visible images through a number of color filters, gamma ray detections and measurements of the Ceres gravity field. These data will be collected during several science phases: an Approach phase (1500000-4860 km from Ceres), a Survey orbit (4860 km radius), a High Altitude Mapping Orbit (HAMO) (1940 km radius) and a Low Altitude Mapping Orbit (LAMO) (855 km radius). The Approach phase included three Rotational Characterization (RC) opportunities. Designing each science orbit and successfully transferring into that orbit requires a sufficiently accurate estimate of Ceres physical parameters (body fixed frame, GM and harmonics). This paper focuses on work performed to estimate Ceres physical parameters using Deep Space Network (DSN) radiometric tracking data and optical measurements derived from science camera imagery. This paper describes planning for the data acquisition, as well as processing techniques and methodology. The trajectories predicted by the gravity field estimations are also compared with the actual as-flown trajectories. Observations of the gravity at high altitudes are found to be sufficient to design precision orbits at lower altitudes. Follow-up analysis after successfully reaching LAMO is included, as is a discussion of lessons learned.

On January 15th, 2006, 0556 UTC, the Stardust spacecraft released a 42-kg Sample Return Canister (SRC) along a trajectory intended to impact a target on the Air Force Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR), near Dugway, Utah. Assurances of a successful SRC delivery to UTTR depended on identifying (and mitigating, if possible) a myriad of error sources. These sources included atmospheric effects, maneuver execution, Orbit Determination (OD) uncertainties and (Delta)V induced by the firing of the unbalanced Reaction Control System (RCS) thrusters needed for deadband attitude control. Every mm/s in prediction error at the TCM-19 epoch would amount to missing the target by approximately one kilometer. This paper will describe the work performed in analyzing and predicting the levels of (Delta)V caused by the attitude deadbanding, as well as prediction performance.

On July 4, 2005 at 05:44:34.2 UTC the Impactor Spacecraft (s/c) impacted comet Tempel 1 with a relative speed of 10.3 km/s capturing high-resolution images of the surface of a cometary nucleus just seconds before impact. Meanwhile, the Flyby s/c captured the impact event using both the Medium Resolution Imager (MRI) and the High Resolution Imager (HRI) and tracked the nucleus for the entire 800 sec period between impact and shield attitude transition. The objective of the Impactor s/c was to impact in an illuminated area viewable from the Flyby s/c and capture high-resolution context images of the impact site. This was accomplished by using autonomous navigation (AutoNav) algorithms and precise attitude information from the attitude determination and control subsystem (ADCS). The Flyby s/c had two primary objectives: 1) capture the impact event with the highest temporal resolution possible in order to observe the ejecta plume expansion dynamics; and 2) track the impact site for at least 800 sec to observe the crater formation and capture the highest resolution images possible of the fully developed crater. These two objectives were met by estimating the Flyby s/c trajectory relative to Tempel 1 using the same AutoNav algorithms along with precise attitude information from ADCS and independently selecting the best impact site. This paper describes the AutoNav system, what happened during the encounter with Tempel 1 and what could have happened.

Landing dispersion estimates for the Mars Exploration Rover missions were key elements in the site targeting process and in the evaluation of landing risk. This paper addresses the process and results of the landing dispersion analyses performed for both Spirit and Opportunity. The several contributors to landing dispersions (navigation and atmospheric uncertainties, spacecraft modeling, winds, and margins) are discussed, as are the analysis tools used. The JPL MarsLS program, a MATLAB-based landing dispersion visualization and statistical analysis tool, was used to calculate the probability of landing within hazardous areas. By convolving this with the probability of landing within flight system limits (in-spec landing) for each hazard area, a single overall measure of landing risk was calculated for each landing ellipse. In-spec probability contours were also generated, allowing a more synoptic view of site risks, illustrating the sensitivity to changes in landing location, and quantifying the possible consequences of anomalies such as incomplete maneuvers. Data and products required to support these analyses are described, including the landing footprints calculated by NASA Langley's POST program and the JPL AEPL program, cartographically registered base maps and hazard maps, and flight system estimates of in-spec landing probabilities for each hazard terrain type. Various factors encountered during operations, including evolving navigation estimates and changing atmospheric models, are discussed and final landing points are compared with approach estimates.

Stardust, NASA's first dedicated sample return mission to a comet, successfully flew through the comet dust around Wold2 on January 2, 2004. The spacecraft flew within 236 km of the comet, meeting the mission requirement of 250+/- 50 km on flyby distance. Stardust collected dust particles and took several images of the comet while flying close to Wild2. The spacecraft will return to earth with the comet samples on January 15, 2006. To accomplish the above objective, a large Deep Space Maneuver (DSM#) was implemented during June 17 and 18, 2003 and a series of Trajectory Correction Maneuvers (TCMs) were also implemented during the 30 days prior to encounter. Both maneuver design and executions were influenced by number of factors including the small body ephemeris uncertainty, predictability of small forces arising from 3-axis attitude limit cycling and spacecraft slews. Maneuver design processes, including contingency plans, and maneuver performance characteristics, are discussed in this paper.

In January 2006, the Stardust spacecraft will deliver its Sample Return Capsule to the recovery site at the Utah Test and Training Range. Stardust will return dust samples from comet Wild 2 colleced in January 2004. During Earth return, the trajectory will be perturbed by small firings of the spacecraft reaction control thrusters. Calibration of these fireings is essential to ensure meeting Earth entry requirements. This paper will describe such calibrations performed between superior conjunctions when Stardust was about 1 AU from the Sun.
