In this paper we study finite-size effects in the Blume-Capel model through the analysis of the zeros of the partition function. We consider a complete graph and make use of the behaviour of the partition function zeros to elucidate the crossover from effective to asymptotic properties. While in the thermodynamic limit the exact solution yields the asymptotic mean-field behaviour, for finite system sizes an effective critical behaviour is observed. We show that even for large systems, the criticality is not asymptotic. We also present insights into how partition function zeros in different complex fields (temperature, magnetic field, crystal field) give different precision and provide us with different parts of the larger picture. This includes the differences between criticality and tricriticality as seen through the lens of Fisher, Lee-Yang, and Crystal Field zeros., Comment: Submitted to Low Temperature Physics

In the 1960's, four famous scaling relations were developed which relate the six standard critical exponents describing continuous phase transitions in the thermodynamic limit of statistical physics models. They are well understood at a fundamental level through the renormalization group. They have been verified in multitudes of theoretical, computational and experimental studies and are firmly established and profoundly important for our understanding of critical phenomena. One of the scaling relations, hyperscaling, fails above the upper critical dimension. There, critical phenomena are governed by Gaussian fixed points in the renormalization-group formalism. Dangerous irrelevant variables are required to deliver the mean-field and Landau values of the critical exponents, which are deemed valid by the Ginzburg criterion. Also above the upper critical dimension, the standard picture is that, unlike for low-dimensional systems, finite-size scaling is non-universal. Here we report on new developments which indicate that the current paradigm is flawed and incomplete. In particular, the introduction of a new exponent characterising the finite-size correlation length allows one to extend hyperscaling beyond the upper critical dimension. Moreover, finite-size scaling is shown to be universal provided the correct scaling window is chosen. These recent developments also lead to the introduction of a new scaling relation analogous to one introduced by Fisher 50 years ago.

Scaling, hyperscaling and finite-size scaling were long considered problematic in theories of critical phenomena in high dimensions. The scaling relations themselves form a model-independent structure that any model-specific theory must adhere to, and they are accounted for by the simple principle of homogeneity. Finite-size scaling is similarly founded on the fundamental idea that only two length scales enter the game -- namely system length and correlation length. While all scaling relations are quite satisfactory for multitudes of physical systems in low dimensions, one fails in high dimensions...

We show that the study of critical properties of the Blume-Capel model at two dimensions can be deduced from Monte Carlo simulations with good accuracy even for small system sizes when one analyses the behaviour of the zeros of the partition function. The phase diagram of the model displays a line of second-order phase transitions ending at a tricritical point, then a line of first-order transitions. We concentrate on critical and tricritical properties and compare the accuracy achieved via standard finite-size scaling of thermodynamic quantities with that from the zeros analysis. This latter analysis showcases spectacular precision, even for systems as small as 64 spins! When local authorities recently selected a neoclassical male "river god head" of colonial origin to represent Ireland's longest river, it was welcomed as "harking back to Irish mythology". The council, local historians and townsfolk were unaware that in Irish mythology the figure associated with the river is a woman -- not a man. Her name is Sinann, and she had been written out of Ireland's national iconography after centuries of colonial destruction of Gaelic heritage. When mathematical investigation into Irish mythology brought Sinann's story to the people via local media, reaction was immediate. Street performances in support of Sinann were backed by letters in newspapers and a petition signed by hundreds of people demanding education about their heritage - and respect for women. How did this happen and what is the story behind Sinann, her diminution, and her rising? Here we recount how modern-day mathematics exposed the colonial imposter as stemming from the Ossianic controversy 250 years ago. We also discuss how a Victorian-era translation of her story from the original Irish turned what was an inspirational creation myth into a tale of a disobedient girl seeking knowledge to which she had no entitlement. This flawed narrative entered the public domain -- in encyclopaedias, on websites, and even in academic literature. Here we cast off colonial baggage to present a new, more accurate translation of Sinann's story alongside a new interpretation -- more amenable to a receptive public seeking enlightenment. Inspired by Sinann's rising, we also use artistic measures to invoke other Irish resilient female icons to rise up and take their rightful place in Irish iconography., Comment: This outreach paper is aimed at a general readership. Surprising as it may seem, applications of statistical methods to physics were inspired by the social sciences, which in turn are linked to the humanities. So perhaps it is not as unlikely as it might first appear for a group of statistical physicists and humanists to come together to investigate one of the subjects of Thomas Jefferson's poetic interests from a scientific point of view. And that is the nature of this article: a collaborative interdisciplinary analysis of the works of a figure Jefferson described as a ''rude bard of the North'' and ''the greatest Poet that has ever existed.'' In 2012, a subset of this team embraced an increase in interdisciplinary methods to apply the new science of complex networks to longstanding questions in comparative mythology. Investigations of network structures embedded in epic narratives allowed universal properties to be identified and ancient texts to be compared to each other. The approach inspired new challenges in mathematics, physics and even processes in industry, thereby illustrating how collaborations of this nature can be mutually beneficial and can capture the attention of a public, often ill-served by academic communication and dissemination. This article derives from these works, and from our consistent objective to help bridge the perceived gap between the natural sciences and the humanities. First we discuss the history of relationships between the two. Then we discuss the origins of the poems of Ossian and Jefferson's interests. We follow with our statistical approach in the next section. In the final section, we explore ideas for future research on these themes and discuss the potential of collaborative pursuits of human curiosity to overcome the two cultures dichotomy and embrace a scientific- and humanities-literate information age., Comment: Contriution to book chapter

We derive exact finite-size corrections for the free energy $F$ of the Ising model on the ${\cal M} \times 2 {\cal N}$ square lattice with Brascamp-Kunz boundary conditions. We calculate ratios $r_p(\rho)$ of $p$th coefficients of F for the infinitely long cylinder (${\cal M} \to \infty$) and the infinitely long Brascamp-Kunz strip (${\cal N} \to \infty$) at varying values of the aspect ratio $\rho={(\cal M}+1) / 2{\cal N}$. Like previous studies have shown for the two-dimensional dimer model, the limiting values $p \to \infty$ of $r_p(\rho)$ exhibit abrupt anomalous behaviour at certain values of $\rho$. The Potts model with invisible states was introduced to explain discrepancies between theoretical predictions and experimental observations of phase transitions in some systems where $Z_q$ symmetry is spontaneously broken. It differs from the ordinary $q$-state Potts model in that each spin, besides the usual $q$ visible states, can be also in any of $r$ so-called invisible states. Spins in an invisible state do not interact with their neighbours but they do contribute to the entropy of the system. As a consequence, an increase in $r$ may cause a phase transition to change from second to first order. Potts models with invisible states describe a number of systems of interest in physics and beyond and have been treated by various tools of statistical and mathematical physics. These lecture notes provide an overview of the renormalization group (RG) as a successful framework to understand critical phenomena above the upper critical dimension $d_{\rm uc}$. After an introduction to the scaling picture of continuous phase transitions, we discuss the apparent failure of the Gaussian fixed point to capture scaling for Landau mean-field theory, which should hold in the thermodynamic limit above $d_{\rm uc}$. We recount how Fisher's dangerous-irrelevant-variable formalism applied to thermodynamic functions partially repairs the situation but at the expense of hyperscaling and finite-size scaling, both of which were, until recently, believed not to apply above $d_{\rm uc}$. We recall limitations of various attempts to match the RG with analytical and numerical results for Ising systems. We explain how the extension of dangerous irrelevancy to the correlation sector is key to marrying the above concepts into a comprehensive RG scaling picture that renders hyperscaling and finite-size scaling valid in all dimensions. We collect what we believe is the current status of the theory, including some new insights and results. This paper is in grateful memory of Michael Fisher who introduced many of the concepts discussed and who, half a century later, contributed to their advancement.

In recent times, the advent of network science permitted new quantitative approaches to literary studies. Here we bring the Kyiv bylyny cycle into the field - East Slavic epic narratives originating in modern-day Ukraine. By comparing them to other prominent European epics, we identify universal and distinguishing properties of the social networks in bylyny. We analyse community structures and rank the most important characters. The method allows to bolster hypotheses from humanities literature - such as the position of Prince Volodymyr - and to generate new ones We show how the Kyiv cycle of bylyny fits very well with narrative networks from other nations - especially heroic ones. The size-dependent nature of the so-called group or departmental h-index is reconsidered in this paper. While the influence of unit size on such collective measures was already demonstrated a decade ago, institutional ratings based on this metric can still be found and still impact on the reputations and funding of many research institutions. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the fallacy of this approach to collective research-quality assessment in a simple way, focusing on the h-index in its original form. We show that randomly reshuffling real scientometric data (varying numbers of citations) amongst institutions of varying size, while maintaining the volume of their research outputs, has little effect on their departmental h-index. This suggests that the relative position in ratings based on the collective h-index is determined not only by quality (impact) of particular research outputs but by their volume. Therefore, the application of the collective h-index in its original form is disputable as a basement for comparison at aggregated levels such as to research groups, institutions or journals. We suggest a possible remedy for this failing which is implementable in a manner that is as simple and understandable as the h-index itself.

We consider a recently introduced generalization of the Ising model in which individual spin strength can vary. The model is intended for analysis of ordering in systems comprising agents which, although matching in their binarity (i.e., maintaining the iconic Ising features of `+' or `$-$', `up' or `down', `yes' or `no'), differ in their strength. To investigate the interplay between variable properties of nodes and interactions between them, we study the model on a complex network where both the spin strength and degree distributions are governed by power laws. We show that in the annealed network approximation, thermodynamic functions of the model are self-averaging and we obtain an exact solution for the partition function. This allows us to derive the leading temperature and field dependencies of thermodynamic functions, their critical behavior, and logarithmic corrections at the interface of different phases. The Fukui-Todo algorithm is an important element of the array of simulational approaches to tackling critical phenomena in statistical physics. The partition-function-zero approach is of fundamental importance to understanding such phenomena and a precise tool to measure their properties. However, because the Fukui-Todo algorithm bypasses sample-by-sample energy computation, zeros cannot easily be harnessed through the energy distribution. Here this obstacle is overcome by a novel reweighting technique and zero-detection protocol. Network science and data analytics are used to quantify static and dynamic structures in George R.R. Martin's epic novels, A Song of Ice and Fire, works noted for their scale and complexity. By tracking the network of character interactions as the story unfolds, it is found that structural properties remain approximately stable and comparable to real-world social networks. Furthermore, the degrees of the most connected characters reflect a cognitive limit on the number of concurrent social connections that humans tend to maintain. We also analyse the distribution of time intervals between significant deaths measured with respect to the in-story timeline. These are consistent with power-law distributions commonly found in inter-event times for a range of non-violent human activities in the real world. We propose that structural features in the narrative that are reflected in our actual social world help readers to follow and to relate to the story, despite its sprawling extent. It is also found that the distribution of intervals between significant deaths in chapters is different to that for the in-story timeline; it is geometric rather than power law. Geometric distributions are memoryless in that the time since the last death does not inform as to the time to the next. Universality is a cornerstone of theories of critical phenomena. It is well understood in most systems especially in the thermodynamic limit. Finite-size systems present additional challenges. Even in low dimensions, universality of the edge and corner contributions to free energies and response functions is less well understood. The question arises of how universality is maintained in correction-to-scaling in systems of the same universality class but with very different corner geometries. 2D geometries deliver the simplest such examples that can be constructed with and without corners. To investigate how the presence and absence of corners manifest universality, we analyze the spanning tree generating function on two finite systems, namely the cobweb and fan networks. We address how universality can be delivered given that the finite-size cobweb has no corners while the fan has four. To answer, we appeal to the Ivashkevich-Izmailian-Hu approach which unifies the generating functions of distinct networks in terms of a single partition function with twisted boundary conditions. This unified approach shows that the contributions to the individual corner free energies of the fan network sum to zero so that it precisely matches that of the web. Correspondence in each case with results established by alternative means for both networks verifies the soundness of the algorithm. Its range of usefulness is demonstrated by its application to hitherto unsolved problems-namely the exact asymptotic expansions of the logarithms of the generating functions and the conformal partition functions for fan and cobweb geometries. We introduce varying spin strengths to the Ising model, a central pillar of statistical physics. With inhomogeneous physical systems in mind, but also anticipating interdisciplinary applications, we present the model on network structures of varying degrees of complexity. We solve it for the generic case of power-law spin strength and find that, with a self-averaging free energy, the model has a rich phase diagram with new universality classes. Indeed, the degree of complexity added by variable spins is on a par to that added by endowing simple networks with increasingly realistic geometries. We report a detailed theoretical investigation into the influence of anisotropy on the magnetic and thermodynamic properties of an octanuclear nickel phosphonate cage with butterfly-shaped molecular geometry, namely $\mathrm{Ni}_8(\mu_3-\mathrm{OH})_4(\mathrm{OMe})_2(\mathrm{O}_3\mathrm{PR}_1)_2 (\mathrm{O}_2\mathrm{C}^t\mathrm{Bu})_6 (\mathrm{HO}_2\mathrm{C}^t\mathrm{Bu})_8$. To validate our exact diagonalization approach, we firstly compare results with simulations and experiment in the isotropic case. Having established concurrence, we then introduce uniaxial single-ion anisotropy and Heisenberg exchange anisotropy between interacted nickel atoms. We then examine effects of both anisotropy parameters on the magnetization process, as well as on the specific heat of the model. We predict intermediate magnetization plateaus, including zero plateau, and magnetization jumps with magnetic ground-state phase transitions at low temperature $T=1$K. The magnetization plateaus are strongly dependent on both the levels of exchange anisotropy and single-ion anisotropy. Varying the former leads to change in width and magnetic position of all intermediate plateaus while they become wider upon increasing the latter. The specific heat of the model manifests a Schottky-type maximum at moderate temperature in the presence of weak magnetic fields, when the system is isotropic. The introducion of aniostropy results in substantial variations in the thermal behavior of the specific heat. Indeed, by tuning anisotropy parameters the Schottky peak convert to a double-peak temperature dependence that coincided with the magnetization jumps. We perform a statistical analysis of scientific-publication data with a goal to provide quantitative analysis of scientific process. Such an investigation belongs to the newly established field of scientometrics: a branch of the general science of science that covers all quantitative methods to analyze science and research process. As a case study we consider download and citation statistics of the journal `Europhysics Letters' (EPL), as Europe's flagship letters journal of broad interest to the physics community. While citations are usually considered as an indicator of academic impact, downloads reflect rather the level of attractiveness or popularity of a publication. Ising's solution of a classical spin model famously demonstrated the absence of a positive-temperature phase transition in one-dimensional equilibrium systems with short-range interactions. No-go arguments established that the energy cost to insert domain walls in such systems is outweighed by entropy excess so that symmetry cannot be spontaneously broken. An archetypal way around the no-go theorems is to augment interaction energy by increasing the range of interaction. Here we introduce new ways around the no-go theorems by investigating entropy depletion instead. We implement this for the Potts model with invisible states.Because spins in such a state do not interact with their surroundings, they contribute to the entropy but not the interaction energy of the system. Reducing the number of invisible states to a negative value decreases the entropy by an amount sufficient to induce a positive-temperature classical phase transition. This approach is complementary to the long-range interaction mechanism. Alternatively, subjecting positive numbers of invisible states to imaginary or complex fields can trigger such a phase transition. We present the exact solution of the 1D classical short-range Potts model with invisible states. Besides the $q$ states of the ordinary Potts model, this possesses $r$ additional states which contribute to the entropy, but not to the interaction energy. We determine the partition function, using the transfer-matrix method, in the general case of two ordering fields: $h_1$ acting on a visible state and $h_2$ on an invisible state. We analyse its zeros in the complex-temperature plane in the case that $h_1=0$. When ${\rm Im}\, h_2=0$ and $r\ge 0$, these zeros accumulate along a line that intersects the real temperature axis at the origin. This corresponds to the usual "phase transition" in a $1$D system. However, for ${\rm Im}\, h_2\neq 0$ or $r<0$, the line of zeros intersects the positive part of the real temperature axis, which signals the existence of a phase transition at non-zero temperature., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Cogadh Gaedhel re Gallaibh ("The War of the Gaedhil with the Gail") is a medieval Irish text, telling how an army under the leadership of Brian Boru challenged Viking invaders and their allies in Ireland, culminating with the Battle of Clontarf in 1014. Brian's victory is widely remembered for breaking Viking power in Ireland, although much modern scholarship disputes traditional perceptions. Instead of an international conflict between Irish and Viking, interpretations based on revisionist scholarship consider it a domestic feud or civil war. Counter-revisionists challenge this view and a longstanding and lively debate continues. Here we introduce quantitative measures to the discussions. We present statistical analyses of network data embedded in the text to position its sets of interactions on a spectrum from the domestic to the international. Tracing the evolution of specific topics is a subject area which belongs to the general problem of mapping the structure of scientific knowledge. Often bibliometric data bases are used to study the history of scientific topic evolution from its appearance to its extinction or merger with other topics. In this chapter the authors present an analysis of the academic response to the disaster that occurred in 1986 in Chornobyl (Chernobyl), Ukraine, considered as one of the most devastating nuclear power plant accidents in history. Using a bibliographic database the distributions of Chornobyl-related papers in different scientific fields are analysed, as are their growth rates and properties of co-authorship networks. Elements of descriptive statistics and tools of complex-network theory are used to highlight interdisciplinary as well as international effects. In particular, tools of complex-network science enable information visualization complemented by further quantitative analysis. On this, the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the "Ising Lectures" in Lviv (Ukraine), we give some personal reflections about the famous model that was suggested by Wilhelm Lenz for ferromagnetism in 1920 and solved in one dimension by his PhD student, Ernst Ising, in 1924. That work of Lenz and Ising marked the start of a scientific direction that, over nearly 100 years, delivered extraordinary successes in explaining collective behaviour in a vast variety of systems, both within and beyond the natural sciences. The broadness of the appeal of the Ising model is reflected in the variety of talks presented at the Ising lectures ( http://www.icmp.lviv.ua/ising/ ) over the past two decades but requires that we restrict this report to a small selection of topics. The paper starts with some personal memoirs of Thomas Ising (Ernst's son). Many spin systems affected by critical slowing down can be efficiently simulated using cluster algorithms. Where such systems have long-range interactions, suitable formulations can additionally bring down the computational effort for each update from O($N^2$) to O($N\ln N$) or even O($N$), thus promising an even more dramatic computational speed-up. Here, we review the available algorithms and propose a new and particularly efficient single-cluster variant. The Ising model in two dimensions with special toroidal boundary conditions is analyzed. These boundary condition, which we call duality twisted boundary conditions, may be interpreted as inserting a specific defect line ("seam") in the system, along non-contractible circles of the cylinder, before closing it into a torus. We derive exact expressions for the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix for the critical ferromagnetic Ising model on the M x N square lattice wrapped on the torus with a specific defect line. As result we have obtained analytically the partition function for the Ising model with such boundary conditions. In the case of infinitely long cylinders of circumference L with duality twisted boundary conditions we obtain the asymptotic expansion of the free energy and the inverse correlation lengths. We find that the ratio of subdominant finite-size correction terms in the asymptotic expansion of the free energy and the inverse correlation lengths should be universal. We verify such universal behavior in the framework of perturbating conformal approach by calculating the universal structure constant Cn1n for descendent states generated by the operator product expansion (OPE) of the primary fields. For such states the calculations of the universal structure constants is difficult task, since its involve the knowledge of the four-point correlation function, which in general does not fix by conformal invariance except for some particular cases, including the Ising model., Comment: 37 pages, 5 figures

In 1760 James Macpherson published the first volume of a series of epic poems which he claimed to have translated into English from ancient Scottish-Gaelic sources. The poems, which purported to have been composed by a third-century bard named Ossian, quickly achieved wide international acclaim. They invited comparisons with major works of the epic tradition, including Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, and effected a profound influence on the emergent Romantic period in literature and the arts. However, the work also provoked one of the most famous literary controversies of all time, colouring the reception of the poetry to this day. The authenticity of the poems was questioned by some scholars, while others protested that they misappropriated material from Irish mythological sources. Recent years have seen a growing critical interest in Ossian, initiated by revisionist and counter-revisionist scholarship and by the two-hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary of the first collected edition of the poems in 1765. Here we investigate Ossian from a networks-science point of view. We compare the connectivity structures underlying the societies described in the Ossianic narratives with those of ancient Greek and Irish sources. Despite attempts, from the outset, to position Ossian alongside the Homeric epics and to distance it from Irish sources, our results indicate significant network-structural differences between Macpherson's text and those of Homer. They also show a strong similarity between Ossianic networks and those of the narratives known as Acallam na Sen\'orach (Colloquy of the Ancients) from the Fenian Cycle of Irish mythology., Comment: Accepted for publication in Advances in Complex systems

Complex systems are characterized by specific time-dependent interactions among their many constituents. As a consequence they often manifest rich, non-trivial and unexpected behavior. Examples arise both in the physical and non-physical world. The study of complex systems forms a new interdisciplinary research area that cuts across physics, biology, ecology, economics, sociology, and the humanities. In this paper we review the essence of complex systems from a physicist's point of view, and try to clarify what makes them conceptually different from systems that are traditionally studied in physics. Our goal is to demonstrate how the dynamics of such systems may be conceptualized in quantitative and predictive terms by extending notions from statistical physics and how they can often be captured in a framework of co-evolving multiplex network structures. We mention three areas of complex-systems science that are currently studied extensively, the science of cities, dynamics of societies, and the representation of texts as evolutionary objects. We discuss why these areas form complex systems in the above sense. We argue that there exists plenty of new land for physicists to explore and that methodical and conceptual progress is needed most., Comment: 22 pages, no figures

We present a unifying, consistent, finite-size-scaling picture for percolation theory bringing it into the framework of a general, renormalization-group-based, scaling scheme for systems above their upper critical dimensions $d_c$. Behaviour at the critical point is non-universal in $d>d_c=6$ dimensions. Proliferation of the largest clusters, with fractal dimension $4$, is associated with the breakdown of hyperscaling there when free boundary conditions are used. But when the boundary conditions are periodic, the maximal clusters have dimension $D=2d/3$, and obey random-graph asymptotics. Universality is instead manifest at the pseudocritical point, where the failure of hyperscaling in its traditional form is universally associated with random-graph-type asymptotics for critical cluster sizes, independent of boundary conditions., Comment: Revised version, 26 pages, no figures

We study temporal networks of characters in literature focusing on "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1865) by Lewis Carroll and the anonymous "La Chanson de Roland" (around 1100). The former, one of the most influential pieces of nonsense literature ever written, describes the adventures of Alice in a fantasy world with logic plays interspersed along the narrative. The latter, a song of heroic deeds, depicts the Battle of Roncevaux in 778 A.D. during Charlemagne's campaign on the Iberian Peninsula. We apply methods recently developed by Taylor and coworkers \cite{Taylor+2015} to find time-averaged eigenvector centralities, Freeman indices and vitalities of characters. In recent years, evaluation of the quality of academic research has become an increasingly important and influential business. It determines, often to a large extent, the amount of research funding flowing into universities and similar institutes from governmental agencies and it impacts upon academic careers. Policy makers are becoming increasingly reliant upon, and influenced by, the outcomes of such evaluations. In response, university managers are increasingly attracted to simple indicators as guides to the dynamics of the positions of their various institutions in league tables. However, these league tables are frequently drawn up by inexpert bodies such as newspapers and magazines, using rather arbitrary measures and criteria. Terms such as "critical mass' and "metrics" are often bandied about without proper understanding of what they actually mean. Rather than accepting the rise and fall of universities, departments and individuals on a turbulent sea of arbitrary measures, we suggest it is incumbent upon the scientific community itself to clarify their nature. Here we report on recent attempts to do that by properly defining critical mass and showing how group size influences research quality. We analyze the reaction of academic communities to a particular urgent topic which abruptly arises as a scientific problem. To this end, we have chosen the disaster that occurred in 1986 in Chornobyl (Chernobyl), Ukraine, considered as one of the most devastating nuclear power plant accidents in history. The academic response is evaluated using scientific-publication data concerning the disaster using the Scopus database to present the picture on an international scale and the bibliographic database "Ukrainika naukova" to consider it on a national level. We measured distributions of papers in different scientific fields, their growth rates and properties of co-authorship networks. {The elements of descriptive statistics and the tools of the complex network theory are used to highlight the interdisciplinary as well as international effects.} Our analysis allows to compare contributions of the international community to Chornobyl-related research as well as integration of Ukraine in the international research on this subject. Furthermore, the content analysis of titles and abstracts of the publications allowed to detect the most important terms used for description of Chornobyl-related problems.

The critical Ising model in two dimensions with a defect line is analyzed to deliver the first exact solution with twisted boundary conditions. We derive exact expressions for the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix and obtain analytically the partition function and the asymptotic expansions of the free energy and inverse correlation lengths for an infinitely long cylinder of circumference $L_x$. We find that finite-size corrections to scaling are of the form $a_k/L^{2k-1}_x$ for the free energy $f$ and $b_k(p)/L_x^{2k-1}$ and $c_k(p)/L_x^{2k-1}$ for inverse correlation lengths $\xi^{-1}_p$ and $\xi^{-1}_{L-p}$, respectively, with integer values of $k$. Frequently, a set of objects has to be evaluated by a panel of assessors, but not every object is assessed by every assessor. A problem facing such panels is how to take into account different standards amongst panel members and varying levels of confidence in their scores. Here, a mathematically-based algorithm is developed to calibrate the scores of such assessors, addressing both of these issues. The algorithm is based on the connectivity of the graph of assessors and objects evaluated, incorporating declared confidences as weights on its edges. If the graph is sufficiently well connected, relative standards can be inferred by comparing how assessors rate objects they assess in common, weighted by the levels of confidence of each assessment. By removing these biases, "true" values are inferred for all the objects. Reliability estimates for the resulting values are obtained. The algorithm is tested in two case studies, one by computer simulation and another based on realistic evaluation data. The process is compared to the simple averaging procedure in widespread use, and to Fisher's additive incomplete block analysis. Considerable progress has recently been made in the development of techniques to exactly determine two-point resistances in networks of various topologies. In particular, two types of method have emerged. One is based on potentials and the evaluation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Laplacian matrix associated with the network or its minors. The second method is based on a recurrence relation associated with the distribution of currents in the network. We compare estimates for past institutional research performances coming from two bibliometric indicators to the results of the UK's Research Assessment Exercise which last took place in 2008. We demonstrate that a version of the departmental h-index is better correlated with the actual results of that peer-review exercise than a competing metric known as the normalised citation-based indicator. We then determine the corresponding h-indices for 2008-2013, the period examined in the UK's Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014. We place herewith the resulting predictions on the arXiv in advance of the REF results being published (December 2014). These may be considered as unbiased predictions of relative performances in that exercise. Here we consider the download statistics of EPL publications. We find that papers in the journal are characterised by fast accumulations of downloads during the first couple of months after publication, followed by slower rates thereafter, behaviour which can be represented by a model with predictive power. We also find that individual papers can be classified in various ways, allowing us to compare categories for open-access and non-open-access papers. For example, for the latter publications, which comprise the bulk of EPL papers, a small proportion (2%) display intense bursts of download activity, possibly following an extended period of less remarkable behaviour. About 18% have an especially high degree of attractiveness over and above what is typical for the journal. One can also classify the ageing of attractiveness by examining download half-lives. Approximately 18% have strong interest initially, waning in time. A further 20% exhibit "delayed recognition" with relatively late spurs in download activity. We express the partition functions of the spanning tree on finite square lattices under five different sets of boundary conditions (free, cylindrical, toroidal, M\"obius strip, and Klein bottle) in terms of a principal partition function with twisted boundary conditions. Based on these expressions, we derive the exact asymptotic expansions of the logarithm of the partition function for each case. We have also established several groups of identities relating spanning-tree partition functions for the different boundary conditions. We also explain an apparent discrepancy between logarithmic correction terms in the free energy for a two dimensional spanning tree model with periodic and free boundary conditions and conformal field theory predictions. It is well known that the imposition of a constraint can transform the properties of critical systems. Early work on this phenomenon by Essam and Garelick, Fisher, and others, focused on the effects of constraints on the leading critical exponents describing phase transitions. Recent work extended these considerations to critical amplitudes and to exponents governing logarithmic corrections in certain marginal scenarios. Here these old and new results are gathered and summarised. We consider (a) the partition functions of the anisotropic dimer model on the rectangular (2M-1) x (2N-1) lattice with free and cylindrical boundary conditions with a single monomer residing on the boundary and (b) the partition function of the anisotropic spanning tree on an M x N rectangular lattice with free boundary conditions. We express (a) and (b) in terms of a principal partition function with twisted boundary conditions. Based on these expressions, we derive the exact asymptotic expansions of the free energy for both cases (a) and (b). We confirm the conformal field theory prediction for the corner free energy of these models, and find the central charge is c = - 2. Above the upper critical dimension, the breakdown of hyperscaling is associated with dangerous irrelevant variables in the renormalization group formalism at least for systems with periodic boundary conditions. While these have been extensively studied, there have been only a few analyses of finite-size scaling with free boundary conditions. The conventional expectation there is that, in contrast to periodic geometries, finite-size scaling is Gaussian, governed by a correlation length commensurate with the lattice extent. Here, detailed numerical studies of the five-dimensional Ising model indicate that this expectation is unsupported, both at the infinite-volume critical point and at the pseudocritical point where the finite-size susceptibility peaks. Instead the evidence indicates that finite-size scaling at the pseudocritical point is similar to that in the periodic case. An analytic explanation is offered which allows hyperscaling to be extended beyond the upper critical dimension., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures

As in statistical physics, the concept of universality plays an important, albeit qualitative, role in the field of comparative mythology. Here we apply statistical mechanical tools to analyse the networks underlying three iconic mythological narratives with a view to identifying common and distinguishing quantitative features. Of the three narratives, an Anglo-Saxon and a Greek text are mostly believed by antiquarians to be partly historically based while the third, an Irish epic, is often considered to be fictional. Here we show that network analysis is able to discriminate real from imaginary social networks and place mythological narratives on the spectrum between them. Moreover, the perceived artificiality of the Irish narrative can be traced back to anomalous features associated with six characters. Considering these as amalgams of several entities or proxies, renders the plausibility of the Irish text comparable to the others from a network-theoretic point of view., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. By the early 1960's advances in statistical physics had established the existence of universality classes for systems with second-order phase transitions and characterized these by critical exponents which are different to the classical ones. There followed the discovery of (now famous) scaling relations between the power-law critical exponents describing second-order criticality. These scaling relations are of fundamental importance and now form a cornerstone of statistical mechanics. In certain circumstances, such scaling behaviour is modified by multiplicative logarithmic corrections. These are also characterized by critical exponents, analogous to the standard ones. Recently scaling relations between these logarithmic exponents have been established. We perform numerical simulations of the lattice-animal problem at the upper critical dimension d=8 on hypercubic lattices in order to investigate logarithmic corrections to scaling there. Our stochastic sampling method is based on the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (PERM), appropriate to linear polymers, and yields high statistics with animals comprised of up to 8000 sites. We estimate both the partition sums (number of different animals) and the radii of gyration. We re-verify the Parisi-Sourlas prediction for the leading exponents and compare the logarithmic-correction exponents to two partially differing sets of predictions from the literature. Finally, we propose, and test, a new Parisi-Sourlas-type scaling relation appropriate for the logarithmic-correction exponents., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We analyze the partition function of the dimer model on an $\mathcal{M} \times \mathcal{N}$ triangular lattice wrapped on torus obtained by Fendley, Moessner and Sondhi [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{66}, 214513 (2002)]. From a finite-size analysis we have found that the dimer model on such a lattice can be described by conformal field theory having central charge $c=1$. The shift exponent for the specific heat is found to depend on the parity of the number of lattice sites $\mathcal{N}$ along a given lattice axis: e.g., for odd $\mathcal{N}$ we obtain the shift exponent $\lambda=1$, while for even $\mathcal{N}$ it is infinite ($\lambda=\infty$). In the former case, therefore, the finite-size specific-heat pseudocritical point is size dependent, while in the latter case, it coincides with the critical point of the thermodynamic limit., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

Using a recently developed model, inspired by mean field theory in statistical physics, and data from the UK's Research Assessment Exercise, we analyse the relationship between the quality of statistics and operational research groups and the quantity researchers in them. Similar to other academic disciplines, we provide evidence for a linear dependency of quality on quantity up to an upper critical mass, which is interpreted as the average maximum number of colleagues with whom a researcher can communicate meaningfully within a research group. The model also predicts a lower critical mass, which research groups should strive to achieve to avoid extinction. For statistics and operational research, the lower critical mass is estimated to be 9 $\pm$ 3. The upper critical mass, beyond which research quality does not significantly depend on group size, is about twice this value.
