1. Cyclotron lines in highly magnetized neutron stars

Abstract: Cyclotron lines, also called cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSF) are spectral features, generally appearing in absorption, in the X-ray spectra of objects containing highly magnetized neutron stars, allowing the direct measurement of the magnetic field strength in these objects. Cyclotron features are thought to be due to resonant scattering of photons by electrons in the strong magnetic fields. The main content of this contribution focusses on electron cyclotron lines as found in accreting X-ray binary pulsars (XRBP) with magnetic fields on the order of several 1012 Gauss. Also, possible proton cyclotron lines from single neutron stars with even stronger magnetic fields are briefly discussed.With regard to electron cyclotron lines, we present an updated list of XRBPs that show evidence of such absorption lines. The first such line was discovered in a 1976 balloon observation of the accreting binary pulsar Hercules X-1, it is considered to be the first direct measurement of the magnetic field of a neutron star. As of today (mid 2018), we list 36 XRBPs showing evidence of one ore more electron cyclotron absorption line(s). A few have been measured only once and must be confirmed (several more objects are listed as candidates). In addition to the Tables of objects, we summarize the evidence of variability of the cyclotron line as a function of various parameters (especially pulse phase, luminosity and time), and add a discussion of the different observed phenomena and associated attempts of theoretical modeling. We also discuss our understanding of the underlying physics of accretion onto highly magnetized neutron stars. Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation Cherenkov telescope facility. It will consist of a large number of segmented-mirror telescopes of three different diameters, placed in two locations, one in the northern and one in the southern hemisphere, thus covering the whole sky. The total number of mirror tiles will be on the order of 10,000, corresponding to a reflective area of ~10^4 m^2. The Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics in T\"ubingen (IAAT) is currently developing mirror control alignment mechanics, electronics, and software optimized for the medium sized telescopes. In addition, IAAT is participating in the CTA mirror prototype testing. In this paper we present the status of the current developments, the main results of recent tests, and plans for the production phase of the mirror control system. Abstract: During the three years long assessment phase of the LOFT mission, candidate to the M3 launch opportunity of the ESA Cosmic Vision programme, we estimated and measured the radiation damage of the silicon drift detectors (SDDs) of the satellite instrumentation. In particular, we irradiated the detectors with protons (of 0.8 and 11 MeV energy) to study the increment of leakage current and the variation of the charge collection efficiency produced by the displacement damage, and we "bombarded" the detectors with hypervelocity dust grains to measure the effect of the debris impacts. In this paper we describe the measurements and discuss the results in the context of the LOFT mission., Comment: Proc. 5. Developments for coating, testing, and aligning Cherenkov Telescope Array mirrors in T\'ubingen

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation very-high energy gamma-ray air-shower Cherenkov observatory. CTA will consist of many segmented-mirror telescopes of three different diameters, placed in two arrays, one in the Northern hemisphere and one in the South, thus covering the whole sky. The total number of mirror tiles will be of the order of 10000, corresponding to a reflective area of ~10^4 m^2. The Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics in T\"ubingen is developing procedures to coat glass-substrate-based mirror tiles, is participating to the CTA mirror prototype testing, and is prototyping Active Mirror Control alignment mechanics, electronics and software. Abstract: We report on our activities, currently in progress, aimed at performing accelerator experiments with soft protons and hyper-velocity dust particles. They include tests of different types of X-ray detectors and related components (such as filters) and measurements of scattering of soft protons and hyper-velocity dust particles off X-ray mirror shells. These activities have been identified as a goal in the context of a number of ongoing space projects in order to assess the risk posed by environmental radiation and dust and qualify the adopted instrumentation with respect to possible damage or performance degradation. In this paper we focus on tests for the Silicon Drift Detectors (SDDs) used aboard the LOFT space mission. We use the Van de Graaff accelerators at the University of T\"ubingen and at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics (MPIK) in Heidelberg, for soft proton and hyper-velocity dust tests respectively. Abstract: Reliable timing calibration is essential for the accurate comparison of XMM-Newton light curves with those from other observatories, to ultimately use them to derive precise physical quantities. The XMM-Newton timing calibration is based on pulsar analysis. However, as pulsars show both timing noise and glitches, it is essential to monitor these calibration sources regularly. To this end, the XMM-Newton observatory performs observations twice a year of the Crab pulsar to monitor the absolute timing accuracy of the EPIC-pn camera in the fast Timing and Burst modes. We present the results of this monitoring campaign, comparing XMM-Newton data from the Crab pulsar (PSR B0531+21) with radio measurements. In addition, we use five pulsars (PSR J0537-69, PSR B0540-69, PSR B0833-45, PSR B1509-58 and PSR B1055-52) with periods ranging from 16 ms to 197 ms to verify the relative timing accuracy. We analysed 38 XMM-Newton observations (0.2-12.0 keV) of the Crab taken over the first ten years of the mission and 13 observations from the five complementary pulsars. All the data were processed with the SAS, the XMM-Newton Scientific Analysis Software, version 9.0. Epoch folding techniques coupled with \chi^{2} tests were used to derive relative timing accuracies. The absolute timing accuracy was determined using the Crab data and comparing the time shift between the main X-ray and radio peaks in the phase folded light curves. The relative timing accuracy of XMM-Newton is found to be better than 10^{-8}. The strongest X-ray pulse peak precedes the corresponding radio peak by 306\pm9 \mus, which is in agreement with other high energy observatories such as Chandra, INTEGRAL and RXTE. Abstract: We present the analysis of the broadened, flourescent iron Kalpha line in simultaneous XMM-Newton and RXTE data from the black hole Cygnus X-1. The XMM-Newton data were taken in a modified version of the timing mode of the EPIC-pn camera. In this mode the lower energy threshold of the instrument is increased to 2.8 keV to avoid telemetry drop outs due to the brightness of the source, while at the same time preserving the signal-to-noise ratio in the Fe Kalpha band. We find that the best-fit spectrum consists of the sum of an exponentially cut off power-law and relativistically smeared, ionized reflection. The shape of the broadened Fe Kalpha feature is due to strong Compton broadening combined with relativistic broadening. Abstract: PKS 0548-322 (z=0.069) is a ``high-frequency-peaked'' BL Lac object and a candidate very high energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray emitter, due to its high X-ray and radio flux. Observations at the VHE band provide insights into the origin of very energetic particles present in this source and the radiation processes at work. We report observations made between October 2004 and January 2008 with the H.E.S.S. array, a four imaging atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes. Contemporaneous UV and X-ray observations with the Swift satellite in November 2006 are also reported. PKS 0548-322 is detected for the first time in the VHE band with H.E.S.S. We measure an excess of 216 gamma-rays corresponding to a significance of 5.6 standard deviations. The photon spectrum of the source is described by a power-law, with a photon index of Gamma=2.86 +/- 0.34 (stat) +/- 0.10 (sys). The integral flux above 200 GeV is 1.3 % of the flux of the Crab Nebula, and is consistent with being constant in time. Contemporaneous Swift/XRT observations reveal an X-ray flux between 2 and 10 keV of F_{2-10 keV}=2.3 +/- 0.2 x 10^{-11} erg.cm^{-2}. s^{-1}, an intermediate intensity state with respect to previous observations. We present Geant4 based simulation results on the IXO Wide Field Imager cosmic ray proton induced background in comparison with previous results obtained for the Simbol-X LED and HED focal plane detectors. Our results show that an improvement in mean differential background flux compared to actually operating X-ray observatories may be feasible with detectors based on DEPFET technology. Abstract: Using the Geant4 toolkit, a Monte-Carlo code to simulate the detector background of the Simbol-X focal plane instrument has been developed with the aim to optimize the design of the instrument. Structural design models of the mirror and detector satellites have been built and used as baseline for our simulations, to evaluate the different background contributions that must be taken into account to determine the sensitivity of the Simbol-X detectors. We work towards a simulation based background and mass model which can be used before and during the mission. For different material compositions, material thicknesses, locations etc. the response of the instrument to the diffuse cosmic hard X-ray background and to the cosmic proton induced background have been calculated. As a result we present estimates of the background count rate expected in the low and high energy detector, and anti-coincidence rates. 13. X-ray Timing Analysis of Six Pulsars Using ESA's XMM-Newton Observatory

Abstract: We present results of a timing analysis of various isolated pulsars using ESA's \emph{XMM-Newton} observatory. Isolated pulsars are useful for calibration purposes because of their stable emission. We have analyzed six pulsars with different pulse profiles in a range of periods between 15 and 200 ms. All observations were made using the \emph{EPIC-pn camera} in its faster modes (Small window, Timing and Burst modes). We investigate the relative timing accuracy of the camera by comparing the pulse periods determined from the \emph{EPIC-pn camera} observations with those from radio observations. 14. The broadband spectrum of Cygnus X-1

Abstract: The Black Hole (BH) binary Cygnus X-1 has been observed simultaneously by INTEGRAL, RXTE, and XMM-Newton for four times in November and December 2004, when Cyg X-1 became first observable with XMM-Newton. During these observations the source was found in one of its transitional states between the hard state and the soft state. We obtained a high signal to noise spectrum of Cyg X-1 from 3 keV to 1 MeV which allows us to put constraints on the nature of the Comptonizing plasma by modeling the continuum with Comptonization models as eqpair (Coppi 1992). Using XMM-Newton we were also able to confirm the presence of a relativistically broadened Fe K-alpha line., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

15. A new luminous supersoft X-ray source in NGC 300

Abstract: Context. We report the discovery of a new luminous supersoft source, XMMU J005455.0-374117, in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 300, in XMM-Newton observations performed on 2005 May 22 and on 2005 November 25. The source is not present in ROSAT data nor in the previous XMM-Newton observations of 2000 December/2001 January. The unique luminous supersoft source, XMMU J005510.7-373855, detected in the 1992 May/June ROSAT data and in the 2000/2001 XMM-Newton data, fell below detectability. This source already appeared highly variable in ROSAT observations. Aims. We report on the temporal and spectral analysis of this new supersoft source (SSS) and compare its properties with the previous known SSS. Methods. We present the light curves of the SSS, model its spectrum and estimate the corresponding flux and luminosities. Results. The light curve of XMMU J005455.0-374117 does not show large fluctuations in any of the observations and its spectrum can be modelled with an absorbed blackbody with kT~60eV. The corresponding bolometric luminosity is 8.1e38 erg/s in the first observation and drops to 2.2e38 erg/s six months later. No optical source brighter than mV~21.7 mag is found coincident with its position. Conclusions. The luminosity of these two SSSs is higher than what has been found for `classical' SSSs. Their nature could be explained by beamed emission from steady nuclear burning of hydrogen onto white dwarfs, or accretion onto stellar-mass black hole with matter outflow or observed at high inclination angle. 16. The highly ionized disk wind of GRO J1655-40

Abstract: Aims: The galactic superluminal microquasar GRO J1655-40 started a new outburst in February 2005, after seven years in quiescence, rising to a high/soft state in March 2005. In this paper we study the X-ray spectra during this rise. Methods: We observed GRO J1655-40 with XMM-Newton, on 27 February 2005, in the low/hard state, and on three consecutive days in March 2005, during the rise of the source to its high/soft state. The EPIC-pn camera was used in the fast-read Burst mode to avoid photon pile-up. Results: First, we contributed to the improvement of the calibration of the EPIC-pn, since the high flux received from the source required some refinements in the correction of the Charge Transfer Efficiency of the camera.Second, we find that the X-ray spectrum of GRO J1655-40 is dominated in the high/soft state by the thermal emission from the accretion disk, with an inner radius of 13-14(D/3.2kpc)km and a maximum temperature of 1.3 keV. Two absorption lines are detected in the EPIC-pn spectra, at 6.7-6.8 and 7.8-8.0 keV, which can be identified either as blended Fe XXV and Fe XXVI K-alpha and K-beta lines, or as blueshifted Fe XXV. We find no orbital dependence on the X-ray properties, which provides an upper limit for the inclination of the system of 73 degr. The RGS spectrometers reveal interstellar absorption features at 17.2AA, 17.5AA (Fe L edges) and 23.54AA (OI K-alpha). Finally, while checking the interstellar origin of the OI line, we find a general correlation of the OI K-alpha line equivalent width with the hydrogen column density using several sources available in the literature., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables. Abstract: We discuss the current X-ray view of the Crab Nebula and Pulsar, summarising our analysis of observations of the source with the EPIC-pn camera on board the XMM-Newton observatory. Different modes of EPIC-pn were combined in order to yield a complete scenario of the spectral properties of the Crab resolved in space and time (pulse phase). In addition we give a description of the special EPIC-pn Burst mode and guidance for data reduction in that mode. We analysed spectra for the nebula and pulsar separately in the 0.6-12.0 keV energy band. All data were processed with the SAS 6.0.0 XMM-Newton Scientific Analysis System package; models were fitted to the data with XSPEC 11. The high time resolution of EPIC-pn in its Burst mode (7 micros) was used for a phase resolved analysis of the pulsar spectrum, after determination of the period with epoch folding techniques. Data from the Small Window mode were processed and corrected for pile-up allowing for spectroscopy simultaneously resolved in space and time. The spatial variation of the spectrum over the entire region of the Crab shows a gradual spectral softening from the inner pulsar region to the outer nebula region with a variation in photon index, Gamma, from 2.0 to 2.4. Pulse phase resolved spectroscopy of the Crab Pulsar reveals a phase dependent modulation of the photon index in form of a significant hardening of the spectrum in the inter-peak phase from Gamma =1.7 during the pulse peak to Gamma =1.5., Comment: 9 pages

Abstract: The Be/X-ray binary 3A 0535+262 has the highest magnetic field determined by cyclotron line studies of all accreting X-ray pulsars, despite an open debate if the fundamental line was rather at ~50 or above 100 keV as observed by different instruments in past outbursts. The source went into quiescence for more than ten years since its last outbursts in 1994. Abstract: We present X-ray properties of NGC 300 point sources, extracted from 66 ksec of XMM-Newton data taken in 2000 December and 2001 January. A total of 163 sources were detected in the energy range of 0.3-6 kev. We report on the global properties of the sources detected inside the D25 optical disk, such as the hardness ratio and X-ray fluxes, and on the properties of their optical counterparts found in B, V, and R images from the 2.2m MPG/ESO telescope. Furthermore, we cross-correlate the X-ray sources with SIMBAD, the USNO-A2.0 catalog, and radio catalogues., Comment: There are 14 pages, 8 figures and 2 tables. 20. Studies of orbital parameters and pulse profile of the accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1807-294

Abstract: The accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1807-294 was observed by XMM-Newton on March 22, 2003 after its discovery on February 21, 2003 by RXTE. The source was detected in its bright phase with an observed average count rate of 33.3 cts/s in the EPIC-pn camera in the 0.5-10 keV energy band (3.7 mCrab). Using the earlier established best-fit orbital period of 40.0741+/-0.0005 minutes from RXTE observations and considering a circular binary orbit as first approximation, we derived a value of 4.8+/-0.1 lt-ms for the projected orbital radius of the binary system and an epoch of the orbital phase of MJD 52720.67415(16). The barycentric mean spin period of the pulsar was derived as 5.2459427+/-0.0000004 ms. The pulsar's spin-pulse profile showed a prominent (1.5 ms FWHM) pulse, with energy and orbital phase dependence in the amplitude and shape. The measured pulsed fraction in four energy bands was found to be 3.1+/-0.2 % (0.5-3.0 keV), 5.4+/-0.4 % (3.0-6.0 keV), 5.1+/-0.7 % (6.0-10.0 keV) and 3.7+/-0.2 % (0.5-10.0 keV), respectively. Studies of spin-profiles with orbital phase and energy showed significant increase in its pulsed fraction during the second observed orbit of the neutron star, gradually declining in the subsequent two orbits, which was associated with sudden but marginal increase in mass accretion. From our investigations of orbital parameters and estimation of other properties of this compact binary system, we conclude that XTE J1807-294 is very likely a candidate for a millisecond radio pulsar., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics letters

21. On the deep minimum state in the Seyfert galaxy MCG-6-30-15

Abstract: (abridged) We present a detailed spectral analysis of the first observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15 by the European Photon Imaging Camera on board the XMM-Newton observatory, together with contemporaneous data from the Proportional Counter Array on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. Confirming our previously published result, we find that the presence of extremely broadened reflection features from an ionized relativistic accretion disk is required even when one employs the latest X-ray reflection models and includes the effect of complex absorption. The extremely broadened reflection features are also present if the primary continuum is modeled with a thermal Comptonisation spectrum rather than a simple power-law continuum. With this fact established, we examine these data using a relativistic smearing function corresponding to a ``generalized thin accretion disk'' model. We find strong evidence for torquing of the central parts of the accretion disk (presumably through magnetic interactions with the plunging region of the disk and/or the rotating black hole itself). We also perform a study of spectral variability within our observation. We find that the disk reflection features maintain roughly a constant equivalent width with respect to the observed continuum, as predicted by simple reflection models. Taken together with other studies of MCG-6-30-15 that find disk features to possess constant intensity at higher flux states, we suggest that the flux of disk features undergoes a saturation once the source emerges from a Deep Minimum state., Comment: 16 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: SIMBOL-X is a hard X-ray mission, operating in the 0.5-70 keV range, which is proposed by a consortium of European laboratories for a launch around 2010. Relying on two spacecraft in a formation flying configuration, SIMBOL-X uses a 30 m focal length X-ray mirror to achieve an unprecedented angular resolution (30 arcsec HEW) and sensitivity (100 times better than INTEGRAL below 50 keV) in the hard X-ray range. SIMBOL-X will allow to elucidate fundamental questions in high energy astrophysics, such as the physics of accretion onto Black Holes, of acceleration in quasar jets and in supernovae remnants, or the nature of the hard X-ray diffuse emission. Abstract: We describe the ``Monitor e Imageador de Raios-X'' (MIRAX), an X-ray astronomy satellite mission proposed by the high energy astrophysics group at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) in Brazil to the Brazilian Space Agency. MIRAX is an international collaboration that includes, besides INPE, the University of California San Diego, the University of Tuebingen in Germany, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Space Research Organization Netherlands. The payload of MIRAX will consist in two identical hard X-ray cameras (10 -200 keV) and one soft X-ray camera (2-28 keV), both with angular resolution of ~ 5-6 arcmin. The basic objective of MIRAX is to carry out continuous broadband imaging spectroscopy observations of a large source sample (~ 9 months/yr) in the central Galactic plane region. This will allow the detection, localization, possible identification, and spectral/temporal study of the entire history of transient phenomena to be carried out in one single mission. MIRAX will have sensitivities of ~ 5 mCrab/day in the 2-10 keV band (~2 times better than the All Sky Monitor on Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer) and 2.6 mCrab/day in the 10-100 keV band (~40 times better than the Earth Occultation technique of the Burst and Transient Source Experiment on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory). 24. XMM-Newton Spectroscopy of the Accretion-Driven Millisecond X-ray Pulsar XTE J1751-305 in Outburst

Abstract: We present an analysis of the first high-resolution spectra measured from an accretion-driven millisecond X-ray pulsar in outburst. We observed XTE J1751-305 with XMM-Newton on 2002 April 7 for approximately 35 ksec. Using a simple absorbed blackbody plus power-law model, we measure an unabsorbed flux of (6.6 +/- 0.1) * 10^(-10) erg/cm^2/s (0.5--10.0 keV). A hard power-law component (Gamma = 1.44 +/- 0.01) contributes 83% of the unabsorbed flux in the 0.5-10.0 keV band, but a blackbody component (kT = 1.05 +/- 0.01 keV) is required. We find no clear evidence for narrow or broad emission or absorption lines in the time-averaged spectra, and the sensitivity of this observation has allowed us to set constraining upper-limits on the strength of important features. The lack of line features is at odds with spectra measured from some other X-ray binaries which share some similarities with XTE J1751-305. 25. A fast X-ray timing capability on XEUS

Abstract: Fast X-ray timing can be used to probe strong gravity fields around collapsed objects and constrain the equation of state of dense matter in neutron stars. These studies require extremely good photon statistics. In view of the huge collecting area of its mirrors, XEUS could make a unique contribution to this field. For this reason, we propose to include a fast X-ray timing capability in the focal plane of the XEUS mirrors. We briefly outline the scientific motivation for such a capability. We compute some sensitivity estimates, which indicate that XEUS could provide better than an order of magnitude sensitivity improvement over the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. Abstract: We present the XMM-Newton first light image, taken in January 2000 with the EPIC pn camera during the instrument's commissioning phase, when XMM-Newton was pointing towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The field is rich in different kinds of X-ray sources: point sources, supernova remnants (SNRs) and diffuse X-ray emission from LMC interstellar gas. The observations are of unprecedented sensitivity, reaching a few 10^32 erg/s for point sources in the LMC. We describe how these data sets were analysed and discuss some of the spectroscopic results. For the SNR N157B the power law spectrum is clearly steeper than previously determined from ROSAT and ASCA data. The existence of a significant thermal component is evident and suggests that N157B is not a Crab-like but a composite SNR. Most puzzling is the spectrum of the LMC hot interstellar medium, which indicates a significant overabundance of Ne and Mg of a few times solar., Comment: to be published in A&A 365

27. The eclipsing bursting X-ray binary EXO 0748-676 revisited by XMM-Newton

Abstract: The bright eclipsing and bursting low-mass X-ray binary EXO 0748-676 has been observed at several occasions by XMM-Newton during the initial calibration and performance verification (CAL/PV) phase. We present here the results obtained from observations with the EPIC cameras. Apart from several type-I X-ray bursts, the source shows a high degree of variability with the presence of soft flares. The wide energy coverage and high sensitivity of XMM-Newton allows for the first time a detailed description of the spectral variability. The source is found to be the superposition of a central (~2 10^8 cm) Comptonized emission, most probably a corona surrounding the inner edge of an accretion disk, associated with a more extended (~3 10^10 cm) thermal halo at a typical temperature of ~0.6 keV with an indication of non-solar abundances. Most of the variations of the source can be accounted for by a variable absorption affecting only the central comptonized component and reaching up to NH ~1.3 10^23 cm^{-2}. The characteristics of the surrounding halo are found compatible with an irradiated atmosphere of an accretion disc which intercepts the central emission due to the system high inclination., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letters, XMM special issue

28. XMM-Newton observation of an unusual iron line in the quasar Markarian 205

Abstract: XMM-Newton observations of the low luminosity, radio-quiet quasar Markarian 205 have revealed a unique iron K emission line profile. In marked contrast to the broad and redshifted iron K line commonly seen in ASCA observations of Seyfert 1 galaxies, we find that a substantial amount of the line flux in Mrk 205 occurs above the neutral line energy of 6.4 keV. Furthermore, we find that the iron line emission has two distinct components, a narrow, unresolved neutral line at 6.4 keV and a broadened line centred at 6.7 keV. We suggest that the most likely origin of the 6.7 keV line is from X-ray reflection off the surface of a highly ionised accretion disk, whilst the 6.4 keV component may arise from neutral matter distant from the black hole, quite possibly in the putative molecular torus. 29. Vela X-1 as seen by RXTE

Abstract: We present results from four observations of the accreting X-ray pulsar Vela X-1 with RXTE in 1996 February. The light curves show strong pulse to pulse variations, while the average pulse profiles are quite stable, similar to previous results. Below 5keV the pulse profiles display a complex, 5-peaked structure with a transition to a simple, double peak above about 15keV. We analyze phase-averaged, phase-resolved, and on-pulse minus off-pulse spectra. The best spectral fits were obtained using continuum models with a smooth high-energy turnover. In contrast, the commonly used power law with exponential cutoff introduced artificial features in the fit residuals. Using a power law with a Fermi-Dirac cutoff modified by photoelectric absorption and an iron line, the best fit spectra are still unacceptable. We interpret large deviations around 25 and 55keV as fundamental and second harmonic cyclotron absorption lines. If this result holds true, the ratio of the line energies seems to be larger than 2. Abstract: We present pulse phase spectroscopy of A 0535+26 in the energy range 35-200 keV from OSSE observations of its giant outburst in 1994. We discuss the phase dependence of the continuum parameters and the cyclotron resonance feature (CRF) at 110 keV already found in the phase averaged spectrum. We find that a CRF is required at every phase. 31. Cyclotron Lines in Highly Magnetized Neutron Stars

Abstract: Cyclotron lines, also called cyclotron resonant scattering features are spectral features, generally appearing in absorption, in the X-ray spectra of objects containing highly magnetized neutron stars, allowing the direct measurement of the magnetic field strength in these objects. Cyclotron features are thought to be due to resonant scattering of photons by electrons in the strong magnetic fields. The main content of this contribution focusses on electron cyclotron lines as found in accreting X-ray binary pulsars (XRBP) with magnetic fields on the order of several 1012 Gauss. Also, possible proton cyclotron lines from single neutron stars with even stronger magnetic fields are briefly discussed. With regard to electron cyclotron lines, we present an updated list of XRBPs that show evidence of such absorption lines. The first such line was discovered in a 1976 balloon observation of the accreting binary pulsar Hercules X-1, it is considered to be the first direct measurement of the magnetic field of a neutron star. As of today (end 2018), we list 35 XRBPs showing evidence of one ore more electron cyclotron absorption line(s). A few have been measured only once and must be confirmed (several more objects are listed as candidates). In addition to the Tables of objects, we summarize the evidence of variability of the cyclotron line as a function of various parameters (especially pulse phase, luminosity and time), and add a discussion of the different observed phenomena and associated attempts of theoretical modeling. We also discuss our understanding of the underlying physics of accretion onto highly magnetized neutron stars. For proton cyclotron lines, we present tables with seven neutron stars and discuss their nature and the physics in these objects.

Abstract: X-ray sensitive CCDs with outstanding properties have been developed and produced at the MPI Halbleiterlabor. They contribute to the focal plane instrumentation of two space missions: the European XMM and the German ABR, IXAS satellites. These CCDs, presented here, use exclusively ph-junctions on ultra-pure, high-ohmic silicon for all active components, in particular for the transfer electrodes and the on-chip readout circuitry. Full depletion of the detector chip, a homogeneous and thin entrance window and large pixel sizes can be realized by this technological concept. This concept results in low noise performance, spectroscopic energy resolution, high detection efficiency, radiation hardness and fast readout. With these properties the so-called pn-CCDs ideally match the requirements of the satellites, which are given by the specifics of their X-ray imaging optics as well as the intensity, energy range and dynamic behavior of the objects to be observed.
