Large-scale eigenvalue problems arise in various fields of science and engineering and demand computationally efficient solutions. In this study, we investigate the subspace approximation for parametric linear eigenvalue problems, aiming to mitigate the computational burden associated with high-fidelity systems. We provide general error estimates under non-simple eigenvalue conditions, establishing the theoretical foundations for our methodology. Numerical examples, ranging from one-dimensional to three-dimensional setups, are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of reduced basis method in handling parametric variations in boundary conditions and coefficient fields to achieve significant computational savings while maintaining high accuracy, making them promising tools for practical applications in large-scale eigenvalue computations.

The cosmic velocity field is an unbiased probe of the total matter distribution but is challenging to measure directly at intermediate and high redshifts. The large-scale velocity field imprints a signal in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) through the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (kSZ) effect. We perform the first 3d reconstruction of the large-scale velocity field from the kSZ effect by applying a quadratic estimator to CMB temperature maps and the 3d positions of galaxies. We do so by combining CMB data from the fifth data release of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (in combination with Planck) and a spectroscopic galaxy sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We then measure the galaxy-velocity cross-power spectrum and detect the presence of the kSZ signal at a signal-to-noise ratio of 7.2$\sigma$. Using this galaxy-velocity cross-correlation alone, we constrain the amplitude of local primordial non-Gaussianity finding $f_{\rm NL}=-90^{+210}_{-350}$. This pathfinder measurement sets the stage for joint galaxy-CMB kSZ constraints to significantly enhance the $f_{\rm NL}$ information obtained from galaxy surveys through sample variance cancellation.

The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst (CHIME/FRB) project has discovered the most repeating fast radio burst (FRB) sources of any telescope. However, most of the physical conclusions derived from this sample are based on data with a time resolution of $\sim$1 ms. In this work, we present for the first time a morphological analysis of the raw voltage data for 118 bursts from 32 of CHIME/FRB's repeating sources. We do not find any significant correlations amongst fluence, dispersion measure (DM), burst rate, and burst duration. Performing the first large-scale morphological comparison at timescales down to microseconds between our repeating sources and 125 non-repeating FRBs, we find that repeaters are narrower in frequency and broader in duration than non-repeaters, supporting previous findings. However, we find that the duration-normalized sub-burst widths of the two populations are consistent, possibly suggesting a shared physical emission mechanism. Additionally, we find that the spectral fluences of the two are consistent. When combined with the larger bandwidths and previously found larger DMs of non-repeaters, this suggests that non-repeaters may have higher intrinsic specific energies than repeating FRBs. We do not find any consistent increase or decrease in the DM ($\lessapprox 1$ pc cm$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$) and scattering timescales ($\lessapprox 2$ ms yr$^{-1}$) of our sources over $\sim2-4$ year periods., Comment: 29 pages, 17 figures, 4 tables; Submitted to ApJ

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are unique probes of extragalactic ionized baryonic structure as each signal, through its burst properties, holds information about the ionized matter it encounters along its sightline. FRB 20200723B is a burst with a scattering timescale of $\tau_\mathrm{400\,MHz} >$1 second at 400 MHz and a dispersion measure of DM $\sim$ 244 pc cm$^{-3}$. Observed across the entire CHIME/FRB frequency band, it is the single-component burst with the largest scattering timescale yet observed by CHIME/FRB. The combination of its high scattering timescale and relatively low dispersion measure present an uncommon opportunity to use FRB 20200723B to explore the properties of the cosmic web it traversed. With an $\sim$arcminute-scale localization region, we find the most likely host galaxy is NGC 4602 (with PATH probability $P(O|x)=0.985$), which resides $\sim$30 Mpc away within a sheet filamentary structure on the outskirts of the Virgo Cluster. We place an upper limit on the average free electron density of this filamentary structure of $\langle n_e \rangle < 4.6^{+9.6}_{-2.0} \times 10^{-5}$ cm$^{-3}$, broadly consistent with expectations from cosmological simulations. We investigate whether the source of scattering lies within the same galaxy as the FRB, or at a farther distance from an intervening structure along the line of sight. The kinematic Sunyaev--Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect induces a non-zero density-density-temperature bispectrum, which we can use to reconstruct the large-scale velocity field from a combination of cosmic microwave background (CMB) and galaxy density measurements, in a procedure known as ``kSZ velocity reconstruction''. This method has been forecast to constrain large-scale modes with future galaxy and CMB surveys, improving their measurement beyond what is possible with the galaxy surveys alone. Such measurements will enable tighter constraints on large-scale signals such as primordial non-Gaussianity, deviations from homogeneity, and modified gravity. In this work, we demonstrate a statistically significant measurement of kSZ velocity reconstruction for the first time, by applying quadratic estimators to the combination of the ACT DR6 CMB+kSZ map and the DESI LRG galaxies (with photometric redshifts) in order to reconstruct the velocity field. We do so using a formalism appropriate for the 2-dimensional projected galaxy fields that we use, which naturally incorporates the curved-sky effects important on the largest scales. We find evidence for the signal by cross-correlating with an external estimate of the velocity field from the spectroscopic BOSS survey and rejecting the null (no-kSZ) hypothesis at $3.8\sigma$. Chronic wounds and associated complications present ever growing burdens for clinics and hospitals world wide. Venous, arterial, diabetic, and pressure wounds are becoming increasingly common globally. These conditions can result in highly debilitating repercussions for those affected, with limb amputations and increased mortality risk resulting from infection becoming more common. New methods to assist clinicians in chronic wound care are therefore vital to maintain high quality care standards. This paper presents an improved HarDNet segmentation architecture which integrates a contrast-eliminating component in the initial layers of the network to enhance feature learning. We also utilise a multi-colour space tensor merging process and adjust the harmonic shape of the convolution blocks to facilitate these additional features. We train our proposed model using wound images from light-skinned patients and test the model on two test sets (one set with ground truth, and one without) comprising only darker-skinned cases. Subjective ratings are obtained from clinical wound experts with intraclass correlation coefficient used to determine inter-rater reliability. For the dark-skin tone test set with ground truth, we demonstrate improvements in terms of Dice similarity coefficient (+0.1221) and intersection over union (+0.1274). Qualitative analysis showed high expert ratings, with improvements of >3% demonstrated when comparing the baseline model with the proposed model. This paper presents the first study to focus on darker-skin tones for chronic wound segmentation using models trained only on wound images exhibiting lighter skin. Diabetes is highly prevalent in countries where patients have darker skin tones, highlighting the need for a greater focus on such cases. Additionally, we conduct the largest qualitative study to date for chronic wound segmentation.

It was recently shown that neural networks can be combined with the analytic method of scale-dependent bias to obtain a measurement of local primordial non-Gaussianity, which is optimal in the squeezed limit that dominates the signal-to-noise. The method is robust to non-linear physics, but also inherits the statistical precision offered by neural networks applied to very non-linear scales. In prior work, we assumed that the neural network has access to the full matter distribution. In this work, we apply our method to halos. We first describe a novel two-field formalism that is optimal even when the matter distribution is not observed. We show that any N halo fields can be compressed to two fields without losing information, and obtain optimal loss functions to learn these fields. We then apply the method to high-resolution AbacusSummit and AbacusPNG simulations. In the present work, the two neural networks observe the local population statistics, in particular the halo mass and concentration distribution in a patch of the sky. While the traditional mass-binned halo analysis is optimal in practice without further halo properties on AbacusPNG, our novel formalism easily allows to include additional halo properties such as the halo concentration, which can improve $f_{NL}$ constraints by a factor of a few. We also explore whether shot noise can be lowered with machine learning compared to a traditional reconstruction, finding no improvement for our simulation parameters., Comment: 27 pages, 14 figures

The identification of persistent radio sources (PRSs) coincident with two repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) supports FRB theories requiring a compact central engine. However, deep non-detections in other cases highlight the diversity of repeating FRBs and their local environments. Here, we perform a systematic search for radio sources towards 37 CHIME/FRB repeaters using their arcminute localizations and a combination of archival surveys and targeted observations. Through multi-wavelength analysis of individual radio sources, we identify two (20181030A-S1 and 20190417A-S1) for which we disfavor an origin of either star formation or an active galactic nucleus in their host galaxies and thus consider them candidate PRSs. We do not find any associated PRSs for the majority of the repeating FRBs in our sample. For 8 FRB fields with Very Large Array imaging, we provide deep limits on the presence of PRSs that are 2--4 orders of magnitude fainter than the PRS associated with FRB\,20121102A. Using Very Large Array Sky Survey imaging of all 37 fields, we constrain the rate of luminous ($\gtrsim$10$^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$) PRSs associated with repeating FRBs to be low. Within the context of FRB-PRS models, we find that 20181030A-S1 and 20190417A-S1 can be reasonably explained within the context of magnetar, hypernebulae, gamma-ray burst afterglow, or supernova ejecta models -- although we note that both sources follow the radio luminosity versus rotation measure relationship predicted in the nebula model framework. Unmeasured confounding is one of the major concerns in causal inference from observational data. Proximal causal inference (PCI) is an emerging methodological framework to detect and potentially account for confounding bias by carefully leveraging a pair of negative control exposure (NCE) and outcome (NCO) variables, also known as treatment and outcome confounding proxies. Although regression-based PCI is well developed for binary and continuous outcomes, analogous PCI regression methods for right-censored time-to-event outcomes are currently lacking. In this paper, we propose a novel two-stage regression PCI approach for right-censored survival data under an additive hazard structural model. We provide theoretical justification for the proposed approach tailored to different types of NCOs, including continuous, count, and right-censored time-to-event variables. We illustrate the approach with an evaluation of the effectiveness of right heart catheterization among critically ill patients using data from the SUPPORT study. Recently, diffusion-based generative models have demonstrated remarkable performance in speech enhancement tasks. However, these methods still encounter challenges, including the lack of structural information and poor performance in low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) scenarios. To overcome these challenges, we propose the Schr\"oodinger Bridge-based Speech Enhancement (SBSE) method, which learns the diffusion processes directly between the noisy input and the clean distribution, unlike conventional diffusion-based speech enhancement systems that learn data to Gaussian distributions. To enhance performance in extremely noisy conditions, we introduce a two-stage system incorporating ratio mask information into the diffusion-based generative model. Our experimental results show that our proposed SBSE method outperforms all the baseline models and achieves state-of-the-art performance, especially in low SNR conditions. Importantly, only a few inference steps are required to achieve the best result.

Informed by interviews with administrators, faculty, and students at the University of North Texas (UNT) this case study explores how a public four-year institution and designated Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), sets a powerful example for leveraging data to improve student outcomes for all. This research shares insights from UNT's efforts to revamp its data infrastructure and foster a culture of data use across campus that can inform student success efforts at institutions of all types and sizes. UNT's success hinges on three key pillars: (1) Use disaggregated data to inform outcome-driven decision-making; (2) Consider everyone on campus a data user and design systems to meet their needs; and (3) Invest in culture as well as data tools and systems. This case study draws on insights gleaned from conversations during the summer and fall of 2023 with administrators, staff, faculty, and students at UNT.

We present a spectro-temporal analysis of 137 fast radio bursts (FRBs) from the first CHIME/FRB baseband catalog, including 125 one-off bursts and 12 repeat bursts, down to microsecond resolution using the least-squares optimization fitting routine: fitburst. Our measured values are compared with those in the first CHIME/FRB intensity catalog, revealing that nearly one-third of our sample exhibits additional burst components at higher time resolutions. We measure sub-burst components within burst envelopes as narrow as $\sim$23 $\mu$s (FWHM), with 20% of the sample displaying sub-structures narrower than 100 $\mu$s, offering constraints on emission mechanisms. Scattering timescales in the sample range from 30 $\mu$s to 13 ms at 600 MHz. We observe no correlations between scattering time and dispersion measure, rotation measure, or linear polarization fraction, with the latter suggesting that depolarization due to multipath propagation is negligible in our sample. Bursts with narrower envelopes ($\leq$ 1 ms) in our sample exhibit higher flux densities, indicating the potential presence of sub-ms FRBs that are being missed by our real-time system below a brightness threshold. Most multicomponent bursts in our sample exhibit sub-burst separations of $\leq$ 1 ms, with no bursts showing separations $<$41 $\mu$s, even at a time resolution of 2.56 $\mu$s, but both scattering and low signal-to-noise ratio can hinder detection of additional components. Lastly, given the morphological diversity of our sample, we suggest that one-off and repeating FRBs can come from different classes but have overlapping property distributions., Comment: 25 pages 14 figures

We present an extensive contemporaneous X-ray and radio campaign performed on the repeating fast radio burst (FRB) source FRB 20220912A for eight weeks immediately following the source's detection by CHIME/FRB. This includes X-ray data from XMM-Newton, NICER, and Swift, and radio detections of FRB 20220912A from CHIME/Pulsar and Effelsberg. We detect no significant X-ray emission at the time of 30 radio bursts with upper limits on $0.5-10.0$ keV X-ray fluence of $(1.5-14.5)\times 10^{-10}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ (99.7% credible interval, unabsorbed) on a timescale of 100 ms. Translated into a fluence ratio $\eta_{\text{ x/r}} = F_{\text{X-ray}}/F_{\text{radio}}$, this corresponds to ${\eta}_{\text{ x/r}} < 7\times10^{6}$. For persistent emission from the location of FRB 20220912A, we derive a 99.7% $0.5-10.0$ keV isotropic flux limit of $8.8\times 10^{-15}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (unabsorbed) or an isotropic luminosity limit of 1.4$\times10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at a distance of 362.4 Mpc. We derive a hierarchical extension to the standard Bayesian treatment of low-count and background-contaminated X-ray data, which allows the robust combination of multiple observations. This methodology allows us to place the best (lowest) 99.7% credible interval upper limit on an FRB ${\eta}_{\text{ x/r}}$ to date, ${\eta}_{\text{ x/r}} < 2\times10^6$, assuming that all thirty detected radio bursts are associated with X-ray bursts with the same fluence ratio. If we instead adopt an X-ray spectrum similar to the X-ray burst observed contemporaneously with FRB-like emission from Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 detected on 2020 April 28, we derive a 99.7% credible interval upper limit on ${\eta}_{\text{ x/r}}$ of $8\times10^5$, which is only 3 times the observed value of ${\eta}_{\text{ x/r}}$ for SGR 1935+2154., Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures. We consider statistical inference problems under uncertain equality constraints, and provide asymptotically valid uncertainty estimates for inferred parameters. The proposed approach leverages the implicit function theorem and primal-dual optimality conditions for a particular problem class. The motivating application is multi-dimensional raking, where observations are adjusted to match marginals; for example, adjusting estimated deaths across race, county, and cause in order to match state all-race all-cause totals. We review raking from a convex optimization perspective, providing explicit primal-dual formulations, algorithms, and optimality conditions for a wide array of raking applications, which are then leveraged to obtain the uncertainty estimates. Empirical results show that the approach obtains, at the cost of a single solve, nearly the same uncertainty estimates as computationally intensive Monte Carlo techniques that pass thousands of observed and of marginal draws through the entire raking process.

Neutron stars and white dwarfs are both dense remnants of post-main-sequence stars. Pulsars, magnetars and strongly magnetised white dwarfs have all been seen to been observed to exhibit coherent, pulsed radio emission in relation to their rotational period. Recently, a new type of radio long period transient (LPT) has been discovered. The bright radio emission of LPTs resembles that of radio pulsars and magnetars. However, they pulse on timescales (minutes) much longer than previously seen. While minute timescales are common rotation periods for white dwarfs, LPTs are much brighter than the known pulsating white dwarfs, and dipolar radiation from isolated (as opposed to binary) magnetic white dwarfs has yet to be observed. Here, we report the discovery of a new $\sim$421~s LPT, CHIME J0630+25, using the CHIME/FRB and CHIME/Pulsar instruments. We used standard pulsar timing techniques and obtained a phase-coherent timing solution which yielded limits on the inferred magnetic field and characteristic age. CHIME J0630+25 is remarkably nearby ($170 \pm 80$~pc), making it the closest LPT discovered to date., Comment: Submitted

Recent studies have found evidence for parity violation in the BOSS spectroscopic galaxy survey, with statistical significance as high as $7\sigma$. These analyses assess the significance of the parity-odd four-point correlation function (4PCF) with a statistic called $\chi^2$. This statistic is biased if the parity-even eight-point correlation function (8PCF) of the data differs from the mock catalogs. We construct new statistics $\chi^2_\times$, $\chi^2_{\mathrm{null}}$ that separate the parity violation signal from the 8PCF bias term, allowing them to be jointly constrained. Applying these statistics to BOSS, we find that the parity violation signal ranges from $0$ to $2.5\sigma$ depending on analysis choices, whereas the 8PCF bias term is $\sim 6\sigma$. We conclude that there is no compelling evidence for parity violation in BOSS. Our new statistics can be used to search for parity violation in future surveys, such as DESI, without 8PCF biases., Comment: 46 pages, 11 figures; comments welcome!

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are micro-to-millisecond duration radio transients that originate mostly from extragalactic distances. The emission mechanism responsible for these high luminosity, short duration transients remains debated. The models are broadly grouped into two classes: physical processes that occur within close proximity to a central engine; and central engines that release energy which moves to large radial distances and subsequently interacts with surrounding media producing radio waves. The expected emission region sizes are notably different between these two types of models. FRB emission size constraints can therefore be used to distinguish between these competing models and inform on the physics responsible. Here we present the measurement of two mutually coherent scintillation scales in the frequency spectrum of FRB 20221022A: one originating from a scattering screen located within the Milky Way, and the second originating from a scattering screen located within its host galaxy or local environment. We use the scattering media as an astrophysical lens to constrain the size of the lateral emission region, $R_{\star\mathrm{obs}} \lesssim 3\times10^{4}$ km. We find that this is inconsistent with the expected emission sizes for the large radial distance models, and is more naturally explained with an emission process that operates within or just beyond the magnetosphere of a central compact object. Recently, FRB 20221022A was found to exhibit an S-shaped polarisation angle swing, supporting a magnetospheric emission process. We present a novel technique to minimize UV-induced damage in experiments that employ second-harmonic generation cavities. The principle of our approach is to reduce the duty cycle of the UV light as much as possible to prolong the lifetime of the used optics. The low duty cycle is achieved by ramping the cavity into resonance for a short time during the experimental cycle when the light is used and tuning it to an off-resonant state otherwise. The necessary fast ramp and length-stabilization control of the cavity is implemented with the FPGA-based STEMlab platform. We demonstrate the utility of this method by measuring the isotope shift of the electronic transition ($X^1\Sigma \leftarrow A^1\Pi$) in AlCl at 261.5 nm in a pulsed molecular beam experiment.

There is overwhelming evidence that pursuing a college education provides substantial economic and non-economic benefits to students. But how much a degree is worth depends heavily on the institution a student attends. Unfortunately, value also is still influenced by a student's race, income, and gender, due to inequities in our higher education and workforce systems. Institutional leaders, federal and state policymakers, and other stakeholders all have a role to play in delivering equitable value: the economic and non-economic benefits that accrue to students, their families, their communities, and society. This report assesses economic value for students by using publicly available data to estimate the number of colleges that provide a minimum economic return for students and explores policy interventions that would increase equitable value. This analysis builds on the work of the Postsecondary Value Commission, which sought to define postsecondary value, measure postsecondary value, and develop an action agenda to expand and improve value, all while centering equity in postsecondary policymaking. The Commission focused on equitable value for Black, Latinx and/or Hispanic, Indigenous, underrepresented Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) students, students from low-income backgrounds, and women--as well as the intersectional identities within and across these groups (e.g., low-income White students and men of color). Evidence shows that the postsecondary education system currently fails to ensure that these students receive returns on their investments through equitable access, completion, affordability, and workforce outcomes. As part of its work, the Commission developed a framework that conceptualizes the economic and non-economic benefits that postsecondary education can provide to students, their families, our workforce, and society. That framework includes six economic value thresholds that measure individual outcomes and return on investment. This paper focuses on students' minimum economic return as measured by the lowest threshold.

Strongly correlated materials feature multiple electronic orbitals which are crucial to accurately understand their many-body properties, from cuprate materials to twisted bilayer graphene. In such multi-band models, quantum interference can lead to dispersionless bands whose large degeneracy gives rise to itinerant magnetism even with weak interactions. Here, we report on signatures of a ferrimagnetic state realized in a Lieb lattice at half-filling, characterized by antialigned magnetic moments with antiferromagnetic correlations, concomitant with a finite spin polarization. We demonstrate its robustness when increasing repulsive interactions from the non-interacting to the Heisenberg regime, and study its emergence when continuously tuning the lattice unit cell from a square to a Lieb geometry. Our work paves the way towards exploring exotic phases in related multi-orbital models such as quantum spin liquids in kagome lattices and heavy fermion behavior in Kondo models., Comment: 7+8 pages, 4+11 figures
