Sustainable aquaculture includes the aquaculture of non-fed crops that provide ecosystem services including nutrient extraction and water quality improvement. While shellfish are the most farmed sustainable aquaculture crops in the USA, shellfish farmers in the northeastern US have an interest in diversifying their crops and incorporating seaweeds into their farms. In this study, we worked with oyster farmers to investigate the potential for farming sugar kelp, Saccharina latissima, across different environmental regimes in coastal Rhode Island USA. Kelp seed spools were outplanted at two time points in the fall/winter of 2017 and 2018 at four sites and cultivated until harvest the following spring. Kelp performance (length, width, yield), tissue content, and nutrient extraction were determined for each line in each year; oyster growth was also measured monthly for one year at each site. We found that kelp could successfully grow in both shallow coastal lagoons and estuarine sites, although the timing of planting and placement of sites was important. Lines that were planted earlier (as soon as water temperatures<15°C) grew longer and yielded more biomass at harvest; overall, kelp blade yield ranged from 0.36 ± 0.01 to 11.26 ± 2.18 kg/m long line. We report little variation in the tissue quality (C:N) of kelp among sites, but differences in biomass production led to differences in nutrient extraction, which ranged from 0.28 ± 0.04 to 16.35 ± 4.26 g nitrogen/m long line and 8.93 ± 0.35 to 286.30 ± 74.66 g carbon/m long line. We found extensive variability in kelp growth within and between lines and between years, suggesting that crop consistency is a challenge for kelp farmers in the region. Our results suggest that, as there is a lower barrier in terms of permitting (versus starting a new aquaculture farm), it may be a worthwhile investment to add sugar kelp to existing oyster farms, provided they have suitable conditions. At current market rates of US$0.88-$3.30 per kg, farmers in southern New England have the potential to earn US$2,229 per 60 m longline. The co-cultivation of seaweed alongside shellfish has the potential to regulate local dissolved nutrient concentrations and consequently affect plankton dynamics. Evidence for this has until now come largely from computational modelling and laboratory studies, rather than field studies. Here we report on weekly/bi-weekly profiling of inorganic nutrient concentrations (nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, phosphate, and silicate) over two years (2019–2020) at three sampling stations across a small-scale (16 ha) kelp and mussel farm in Porthallow Bay, Cornwall, UK. Nutrient concentrations were measured in conjunction with a range of related environmental variables, including water temperature, salinity, clarity, and phyto- and zoo- plankton abundance, biomass and community composition. These environmental data were also supplemented with river discharge data. Our results indicate typical seasonal variations in chemical (nutrient), physical (hydrographic), and biological (plankton) parameters across all three sampling stations and no significant reductions in inorganic nutrient concentrations in the water column downstream from the integrated kelp and shellfish farm. We conclude that the effectiveness of nutrient regulation by integrating seaweed and shellfish aquaculture will depend on local climatic and hydro-geochemical conditions (affecting background nutrient inputs), as well as the design and scale of integrated multi–trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems.

An experimental kelp farming system for exposed ocean conditions was designed, deployed, planted with kelp and instrumented for evaluation of its dynamic response to ocean waves, tides, and currents. The farm featured a novel "lattice" mooring design and anchor lines and cultivation lines (horizontal lines used as kelp growth substrate) made of fiberglass rods. The farm was deployed at a site in Saco Bay, Maine with 13 m (MLLW) water depth. There the farm was exposed to waves with heights up to 5.9 m. Anchor line tension, tide and wave height time series were gathered and processed into response amplitude operators (RAOs) and least squared error linear regression models enabling recognition of meaningful patterns between the forcing factors and the mooring response. Mean mooring line tensions were shown to increase nonlinearly with tide. Anchor line tension response amplitudes were shown to exhibit high sensitivity to both low and high frequency wave forcing. Numerical free-release test simulations suggested natural frequencies in heave of 0.91 Hz, indicating that tension response sensitivities at high frequency could be the result of resonance. Low frequency tension response disproportionate to the low frequency wave forcing could be explained by wave forcing on kelp cultivation arrays modulated by wave group envelopes. Instances of high magnitude, potentially damaging peak tensions, deemed shock loads, were prevalent in most load cases. Anchor line tension dynamics including RAO and shock load magnitudes were shown to be sensitive to mooring stiffness (ratio of tension to resulting elongation) and, in some cases, significant wave amplitude. Patterns of anchor line response indicated that additional mooring elasticity or geometric compliance and use of floatation with less sensitivity to high frequency waves could help avoid the cause of and costly consequences of amplified high frequency loading and high amplitude shock loading. RAOs and regression model results also indicated a subdued response in frequencies associated with ocean swell waves, suggesting desirable performance in waves most dominant in extreme storm events. The future of large-scale kelp aquaculture is standing at a crossroad, with the diverging paths being characterized by two fundamentally different cultivation methods that differ on how well gametophyte reproduction can be controlled. The cultivation method that does not directly control gametophyte reproduction is more widely utilized at the moment, but interest in better controlling gametophyte reproduction is growing steadily. Here, we validate a bioreactor system that overcomes a number of implementation challenges for this controlled reproductive method, expanding the possibility of clonal gametophyte cultivation outside of expensive laboratory settings. The main goals of this system include (i) the maintenance of clean gametophyte clonal cultures in non-sterile environments over prolonged periods of time, (ii) the production of large numbers of juvenile sporophytes, and (iii) effective transportation of gametophytes and sporophytes. The "SeaCoRe system" consists out of three parts that correspond to these three challenges: (1) clone-reactors, (2) a clone-inducer, and (3) a transporter. The validation of the system showed that delayed Saccharina latissima and Alaria esculenta gametophytes can grow reliably for 75 days in the clone-reactors. Initial gametophyte densities of 0.4 mg DW and 0.6 mg DW gametophtyes mL−1 were optimal for S. latissima and A. esculenta, resulting in reproductive successes of 604 and 422 sporophytes mL−1, respectively. Lastly, gametophyte transport was simulated, with high reproductive success still achieved within 19 days in ~ 20 °C environments. Globally kelp farming is gaining attention to mitigate land-use pressures and achieve carbon neutrality. However, the influence of environmental perturbations on kelp farming remains largely unknown. Recently, a severe disease outbreak caused extensive kelp mortality in Sanggou Bay, China, one of the world's largest high-density kelp farming areas. Here, through in situ investigations and simulation experiments, we find indications that an anomalously dramatic increase in elevated coastal seawater light penetration may have contributed to dysbiosis in the kelp Saccharina japonica 's microbiome. This dysbiosis promoted the proliferation of opportunistic pathogenic Enterobacterales, mainly including the genera Colwellia and Pseudoalteromonas . Using transcriptomic analyses, we revealed that high-light conditions likely induced oxidative stress in kelp, potentially facilitating opportunistic bacterial Enterobacterales attack that activates a terrestrial plant-like pattern recognition receptor system in kelp. Furthermore, we uncover crucial genotypic determinants of Enterobacterales dominance and pathogenicity within kelp tissue, including pathogen-associated molecular patterns, potential membrane-damaging toxins, and alginate and mannitol lysis capability. Finally, through analysis of kelp-associated microbiome data sets under the influence of ocean warming and acidification, we conclude that such Enterobacterales favoring microbiome shifts are likely to become more prevalent in future environmental conditions. Our study highlights the need for understanding complex environmental influences on kelp health and associated microbiomes for the sustainable development of seaweed farming.

Aquaculture in many countries around the world has become the biggest source of seafood for human consumption. While it alleviates the pressure on wild capture fisheries, the long-term impacts of large-scale, intensive aquaculture on natural coastal systems need to be better understood. In particular, aquaculture may alter habitat and exceed the carrying capacity of coastal marine ecosystems. In this paper, we develop a high-resolution numerical model for Sanggou Bay, one of the largest kelp and shellfish aquaculture sites in Northern China, to investigate the effects of aquaculture on nutrient transport and residence time in the bay. Drag from aquaculture is parameterized for surface infrastructure, kelp canopies, and bivalve cages. A model for dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) includes transport, vertical turbulent mixing, sediment and bivalve sources, and a sink due to kelp uptake. Test cases show that, due to drag from the dense aquaculture and thus a reduction of horizontal transport, kelp production is limited because DIN from the Yellow Sea is consumed before reaching the interior of the kelp farms. Aquaculture drag also causes an increase in the nutrient residence time from an average of 5 to 10 days in the middle of Sanggou Bay, and from 25 to 40 days in the shallow inner bay. Low exchange rates and a lack of DIN uptake by kelp make these regions more susceptible to phytoplankton blooms due to high nutrient retention. In this study, an integrated specialized ship for kelp harvesting, classifying, and grading is developed in order to (1) solve issues in mechanization of traditional raft-frame-based kelp farming, (2) reduce labor intensity and labor input in the kelp harvesting process, and (3) accelerate the industry by upgrading and transforming the current system of kelp farming. In addition, the influence of sea conditions on operation of this ship is evaluated and analyzed using three-dimensional modeling and simulation. The ship is designed according to the state-of-the-art raft-frame structure. Based on man-machine coordination, a duplicated raft-frame structure is adopted, such that the processes of harvesting, classifying, grading and packing can be integrated. This shortens the process flow, improves on efficiency, and addresses the non-standard and irregularity issues of traditional rafts that are trussed by hand. In the meantime, the impacts of sea waves and turbulence on the mechanized kelp harvesting are also minimized. Furthermore, the combination of theoretical calculation and experimental verification is implemented successfully. Through the research and development of this integrated specialized ship for kelp harvesting and grading, the "bottleneck" can be overcome, which is mainly caused by the inefficiency of the current kelp industry and the contradictions in labor force structure.
