Background and aimsDetailed investigation of the biological pathways leading to hepatic fibrosis and identification of liver fibrosis biomarkers may facilitate early interventions for pediatric cholestasis.Approach and resultsA targeted enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay-based panel of nine biomarkers (lysyl oxidase, tissue inhibitor matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) 1, connective tissue growth factor [CTGF], IL-8, endoglin, periostin, Mac-2-binding protein, MMP-3, and MMP-7) was examined in children with biliary atresia (BA; n = 187), alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (A1AT; n = 78), and Alagille syndrome (ALGS; n = 65) and correlated with liver stiffness (LSM) and biochemical measures of liver disease. Abstract

ObjectivesTo identify predictors of portal hypertension, liver transplantation, and death in North American youth with alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency, and compare with patients with AAT deficiency elsewhere.Study designThe Childhood Liver Disease Research Network Longitudinal Observational Study of Genetic Causes of Intrahepatic Cholestasis is a prospective, cohort study of pediatric cholestatic liver diseases, including AAT deficiency, enrolling PIZZ and PISZ subjects 0-25 years of age seen since November 2007 at 17 tertiary care centers in the US and Canada. Data from standard-of-care baseline and annual follow-up visits were recorded from medical records, history, physical examination, and laboratory studies. Participants with portal hypertension were identified based on data collected.ResultsWe enrolled 350 participants (60% male) with a native liver; 278 (79%) entered the cohort without portal hypertension and 18 developed portal hypertension during follow-up. Thirty participants required liver transplantation; 2 patients died during 1077 person-years of follow-up. There was no difference in participants with or without preceding neonatal cholestasis progressing to transplantation or death during the study (12% vs 7%; P = .09), or in experiencing portal hypertension (28% vs 21%; P = .16); the hazard ratio for neonatal cholestasis leading to portal hypertension was P = .04. Development of portal hypertension was associated with a reduced height Z-score.ConclusionsPortal hypertension in youth with AAT deficiency impacts growth measures. Progression to liver transplantation is slow and death is rare, but the risk of complications and severe liver disease progression persists throughout childhood. A history of neonatal cholestasis is a weak predictor of severe disease.

Abstract

In 2011, three-quarters of young people reported experiencing survey-defined physical violence before turning 18 in the Tanzania Violence Against Children Survey (VACS). Physical punishment is, however, legal across all settings of children’s lives on mainland Tanzania. This ethnography focuses on the space between community perceptions and experiences of child discipline and the discourse on children’s rights. The study’s conceptual framework combines a socio-ecological model with the concept of liminality to consider policies, practices and perspectives about physical punishment within a rapidly transforming society. Data were collected April 2016 – May 2017 in a northwest Tanzania peri-urban town, with some Dar es Salaam national-level data also collected. Methods included observation, in-depth interviews, group discussions with teachers, caregivers, and children (8-12 years), and policy and media reviews. As a term, physical punishment proved more consistently understood for discussing children’s experiences of violence than corporal punishment. Physical punishment was common in the peri-urban town and mostly considered necessary. Some national rights translators, adults and children across the socio-ecological model contest the practice. Adults resisted physical punishment’s abolishment using enactments of avoidance, negotiation and/or outright rejection. Multiple childhood realities emerged along class lines with middle-class providing some protection from physical punishment. Children mostly said physical punishments were necessary for maintaining respect and obedience, but also relayed that excessive physical punishment was violence and created fear and stress that could undermine learning. This ethnography demonstrates the value of combined methods in understanding children’s daily realities and the complicated and uncomfortable relativist ethics of researching physical punishment of children. I argue that global rights discourse is not just imposed. Rather, it is resisted, debated and dynamic, occupying a liminal space within broader societal change. Resolution on use of physical punishment has not yet been reached; however, transformations are on-going which considered the best interest of the child.

Abstract

Martha Euphemia Lofton Haynes was the first African American woman to receive a PhD in mathematics. She grew up in Washington DC, earned a bachelors degree in mathematics from Smith College in 1914, a masters in education from University of Chicago in 1930, and a doctorate in mathematics from the Catholic University of America in 1943. Haynes spent over forty-five years teaching in Washington DC from elementary and secondary level to university level. She was active in many community service organizations where she served in leadership roles and received numerous honors including being named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and being awarded a Papal Medal. She was a member of the Washington DC school board from 1960 - 1968, serving as president from June 1966 through July 1967. She played a leadership role in ending the tracking system, which she argued discriminated against African American students by assigning them to education tracks that did not prepare them for college. 33. Digging for Data: Mining Geoscience Databases to Deepen and Expand STEM Learning Opportunities

Abstract

Thanks to the development and deployment of federally funded satellite-, buoy-, and aircraft-based remote sensing instruments, continuous streams of Earth and space data are publicly available via online databases. This accessibility provides flexibility to explore geoscience data that are interesting and relevant to students--keystone components of the "Next Generation Science Standards" ("NGSS") (Achieve 2013a). In this article, the author outlines activities that leverage archived geoscience data, and describe design considerations for a new 11th-grade interdisciplinary science course that draw on education research and practice. Through pairing of design considerations and application in the context of an urban under-resourced technical high school, the author illustrates ways geoscience databases can be used to realize "NGSS" vision, as well as expand possibilities.

37. Characterizing Epistemic Messages in the Classroom

Abstract

A longstanding aim of education efforts to position students as knowledge constructors so they are engaged in the building and shaping their learning environment. Current education reforms situate student sense making around authentic science inquiries where students are engaged in the practices of science. In the science classroom, this means students are poised to figure things out by asking questions, carrying out investigations, and constructing models so that are positioned to do the intellectual work. However, structuring classroom environments so that students have more authority with respect to their learning is a challenging. Much of this work has centered on how these learning environments are designed, or function theoretically. But less is known about how teachers support students to participate with intellectual authority in real time: What does it look like when a teacher effectively develops students' intellectual authority? In this dissertation, I answer this question by identifying the epistemic messages about learning that one teacher communicates to his students about the kind of ideas that deserve space in the classroom. A theoretical construct, epistemic messages are the implicit messages a teacher sends about the nature of knowledge and learning. How students make sense of what knowledge is valued and supported at school through the interactive and discursive routines that make up the classroom culture determine how they will participate. In this work, I take a situative perspective that views learning as happening in interaction. These interactions happen moment to moment in response to students' ideas. Guided by these assumptions, I suggest that a teacher's epistemic messages drive the patterns in student discourse, and that these patterns in student discourse influence how a teacher responds, as part of a recursive pattern of interaction that is constantly delivered & interactively negotiated. With this dissertation I conduct a longitudinal instrumental case study of an experienced teacher and his students during a multi-week Earth science unit in his eighth-grade classroom. I complete a line by line analysis of whole group discussion and identify four epistemic messages which I call socio-epistemic messages because they communicate normative aspects of students' participation relative to knowledge building. I identify both horizontal messages that emphasize how learners participate collectively in the activity of knowledge building in relation to each other, and vertical messages that position the students in relation to the ideas they are building together. I characterize each message and identify patterns in the way the messages were communicated over the course of the unit. I used rich description to describe the complex ways in which Mr. M enacted the messages, often delivered in combination, to communicate how he wants the students to relate to each other and to the ideas they are constructing together. Through my analysis, I show that the messages were constantly communicated and negotiated, dynamically framing classroom activity in the moment to moment interactions. I demonstrate how they were infused in both the structure of student's activities and the nature of the classroom discussion. I suggest that messages form the "connective tissue" that set up the conditions for students' knowledge building, by conveying socio-epistemic expectations for participation, which adds a complementary and important dimension to disciplinary aims of science instruction, and to the development of students' intellectual authority. In recent years, the field of qualitative data collection, management, and analysis has undergone significant evolution, with researchers worldwide increasingly leveraging technological advancements to streamline and simplify their practices. Despite the advantages of using qualitative data coding software, several challenges persist, particularly in resource-constrained settings. Issues such as the high cost of software licenses, the time required to learn and use these tools, and the complexity of advanced features often hinder researchers, especially students and early career researchers in low-income contexts, and contribute to the generation of poor-quality research evidence. This paper aims to provide a simplified, step-by-step guide to manual qualitative data coding using Microsoft Word, a widely accessible tool in low-income contexts. It is designed to support students and early-career researchers in low-income settings, helping them to conduct effective qualitative data management and analysis without the need for expensive software. We provide a five-step detailed guide for qualitative data coding using Microsoft Word, based on a practical example from previous research on maternal and child health in rural Tanzania. We also present a hypothetical example of a student research study focusing on the drivers behind pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The process begins with examining the research objectives and questions to develop preliminary themes and sub-themes, identifying relevant data sources within study interview guides, and creating guided transcription and coding templates tailored to each interview guide, followed by data coding by integrating interview data into a structured template. Practical insights are provided on transforming coded data into meaningful interpretations and analyses. This systematic approach aims to facilitate effective qualitative data management and analysis using accessible tools like Microsoft Word, thereby supporting students and early career researchers in conducting small-scale studies effectively. Special Education and at-risk kindergarteners can be outstanding authors given the appropriate educational opportunity. In a small, suburban public school district, two university professors collaboratively met with experienced special and general education teachers to introduce them to writing workshop methodology. This year-long series of monthly meetings and in-class demonstrations by the consultants supported the kindergarten educators as they taught writing to all children. The special and general education teachers shifted from an emphasis on student products to focusing on children's abilities and needs as the kindergarteners composed their pieces during writing workshop. According to the teachers, student work "far exceeded their expectations." Pictures of youngsters' compositions, samples of topics used, and some teacher developed tools are included in this article to show that writing workshop was a positive experience for all. The workshop approach motivated the children to see themselves as authors and honored everyone's attempts and accomplishments.
