1. Stretching the Printability Metric in Direct-ink Writing with Highly Extensible Yield-Stress Fluids

Abstract

Direct-ink writing leverages the rheological complexity of yield-stress fluids to construct complex geometries, particularly those with large gaps across internal structures. However, extensional rheological properties have rarely been considered in work that studies rheology-printability correlations. Here, we test our hypothesis that extensional properties correlate with drawability, a key indicator of printability that signifies speed robustness, printing resolution, and gap-spanning performance. We formulated cementitious suspensions using hydroxyapatite (HAp) particles, independently tuning them for yield stress and extensibility, two crucial rheological properties, and test-printed. To enhance extensibility, we incorporated hydroxypropyl methylcellulose as a polymeric modifier, but this enhancement may decrease as yield stress increases, presenting a challenge in materials design. We modulated particle interactions to achieve a wide range of yield stress and extensibility, allowing for rigorous testing of our hypothesis. This approach created inks with high extensibility and high yield stress, generally considered mutually exclusive properties. We evaluated correlations between drawability and key rheological properties, finding the strongest positive correlation with extensional failure strains (strain-to-break) rather than yield stress. We establish a bijective property-manufacturing relationship (one-on-one mapping of shear yield stress to buildability and extensional strain-to-break to drawability) by combining our findings on drawability with previous studies on buildability. This relationship provides a comprehensive framework for designing high-performance inks that can be self-supporting, capable of high-speed printing, and allow gap-spanning features.

2. An Exploration of the Environmental Setting Mothers and Early Adolescent Youth Prefer to Have Conversations about Daily Stressors

Abstract

Parent-child conversations are impacted by environmental setting. Yet, few studies have considered where mothers and early adolescent youth prefer to have conversations about daily stressors. This study examines where mothers and youth prefer to have conversations about daily stressors, differences in preference based on demographic variables, and why certain environmental settings are preferred. One hundred youth (M = 11.04, 53% boys) and their mothers participated in semi-structured interviews. Findings showed that youth preferred to communicate in their bedroom, the kitchen, and the living room, whereas mothers preferred the kitchen, their child's bedroom, and the car. Using thematic analysis, we found that participants preferred communicating in physically and psychologically comfortable environments, private locations that were away from others, and that they relied on bedtime and mealtime routines to engage in regular conversations. Findings suggest that the place mothers and youth converse matters and may meaningfully impact parent-child conversations about daily stressors.

3. Creating Engaging Virtual Annual Program Review Experiences to Evaluate Current Online Graduate Education Practices

Abstract

Although graduate academic institutions implement diverse annual review processes, their overall intent is focused on ensuring continuous improvement of program quality (National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment, 2020). Through program review processes, university leaders (e.g., department chairs, program leads) analyze student performance and department procedures to inform future actions and policies. This mixed-methods case study examined an online campus's program review structure. Specifically, a description of how administrative faculty (i.e., department chairs and associate department chairs) reported their program's strengths, challenges, and future directions and the collaborative scholarly interactions that resulted from these sessions are discussed. Findings from all study participants revealed that administrative faculty perceived program review processes as beneficial and provided a unique opportunity for collaboration across diverse university programs.

4. 'To Be Self-Critical Doesn't Serve in Its Best Interests': Stakeholder Perspectives on How Private Schools Enable Racial Discrimination

Abstract

Most private schools in the United States have a history of racialized segregation. Despite this, families from historically oppressed backgrounds often choose to navigate private schools for the academic and social benefits they promise. As diversifying institutions, private schools must attend to how the unique context of private funding changes how they engage with meaningful racial equity work. The article uses a case study of one traditional, private school to investigate (1) its patterns of racial discrimination and (2) how/if the school enables or disrupts those patterns. The analysis found primary patterns of racial discrimination at both the interpersonal and institutional level. Stakeholders most frequently identified racial discrimination through isolation, overt racism during sports, and racially discriminatory dress code enforcement. The analysis also found the school was willing to engage in meaningful racial equity work if and only if it also aligned with the school's public image and the priorities of the major donors and legacy families.

Abstract

The geotechnical evaluation of seabed sediments is important for engineering projects and naval applications, offering valuable insights into sediment properties, behavior, and strength. Obtaining high-quality seabed samples can be a challenging task, making in-situ testing an essential part of site characterization. Free Fall Penetrometers (FFP) have emerged as robust tools for rapidly profiling seabed surface sediments, even in energetic nearshore or estuarine conditions and shallow as well as deep depths. While methods for interpretation of traditional offshore Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) data are well-established, their adaptation to FFP data is still an area of research. In this study, we introduce an innovative approach that utilizes machine learning algorithms to create a sediment behavior classification system based on portable free fall penetrometer (PFFP) data. The proposed model leverages PFFP measurements obtained from locations such as Sequim Bay (Washington), the Potomac River, and the York River (Virginia). The result shows 91.1\% accuracy in the class prediction, with the classes representing cohesionless sediment with little to no plasticity, cohesionless sediment with some plasticity, cohesive sediment with low plasticity, and cohesive sediment with high plasticity. The model prediction not only provides the predicted class but also yields an estimate of inherent uncertainty associated with the prediction, which can provide valuable insight about different sediment behaviors. These uncertainties typically range from very low to very high, with lower uncertainties being more common, but they can increase significantly dpending on variations in sediment composition, environmental conditions, and operational techniques. By quantifying uncertainty, the model offers a more comprehensive and informed approach to sediment classification.

Abstract

We describe the salient characteristics of Sentinel-1 wave (WV) mode vignettes. We describe our approach for working with WV mode data that enables vignette-based data access and processing, thereby eliminating the Sentinel-1 Single Look Complex (SLC) data packaging and current archive metadata conventions as a bottleneck to large scale processing. We discuss the spatial and temporal coverage of Sentinel-1 WV mode data and show that a large volume of data has been acquired over land masses in this mode, thus allowing us to use it for land monitoring applications as well as ocean applications. For targeted infrastructure monitoring studies, we are able to generate coregistered, geocoded stacks of WV mode SLCs for any area of interest (AOI) with sufficient wave mode coverage, in a few minutes. We demonstrate the applicability of using WV mode data for deformation monitoring applications. Finally, we discuss the benefits and limitations of working with Sentinel-1 WV mode data.

Given a collection of points $S \subset \mathbb{R}^N$, which is partitioned into $M$ overlapping subsets $\{S_i\}_{i=1}^M$, and approximate data $\{D_i\}_{i=1}^M$ associated with the subsets, one may seek a consistent merged dataset $D$ that is derived from $\{S_i\}_{i=1}^M$ and $\{D_i\}_{i=1}^M$. This note presents a method for constructing $D$ under the assumption that $D$ represents discrete samples of a suitably smooth function $f:\mathbb{R}^N \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ evaluated at the points in $S$. The method has two steps. The first step uses a least-squares solve to approximate the constant offsets for each $D_i$. The second step uses a sequence of discrete Dirichlet problems to resolve any remaining differences. Abstract

Preceding a core-collapse supernova, various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming core-collapse supernova can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-supernova neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande on pre-supernova neutrino detection. A pre-supernova alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the Super-Kamiokande detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-supernova neutrino signal from a 15 M$_{\odot}$ star within 510 pc of the Earth, at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. Abstract

Electropolishing (EP) of 1.3 GHz niobium superconducting RF cavities is conducted to achieve a desired smooth and contaminant-free surface that yields good RF performance. Achieving a smooth surface of a large-sized elliptical cavity with the standard EP conditions was found to be challenging. This work aimed to conduct a systematic parametric EP study to understand the effects of various EP parameters on the surface of 650 MHz niobium cavities used in the Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II) linear accelerator. Parameters optimized in this study provided a smooth surface of the cavities. The electropolished cavity showed significantly a higher accelerating gradient meeting baseline requirement and qualified for further surface treatment to improve the cavity quality factor., Comment: SRF2023

Abstract

We have conducted an extensive towed-magnetic-sled survey during the period of June 14-28, 2023, over the seafloor about 85 km north of Manus Island, Papua New Guinea, centered around the calculated path of the bolide CNEOS 2014-01-08 (IM1). We found about 850 spherules of diameter 0.1-1.3 millimeters in our samples. The samples were analyzed by micro-XRF, Electron Probe Microanalyzer and ICP Mass spectrometry. Here we report major and trace element compositions of the samples and classify spherules based on that analysis. Spherules comprising 22% of the collection, appear to all reflect planetary igneous differentiation and are all different from previously described spherules. A subset of the differentiated-spherules show an excess of Be, La and U, by up to three orders of magnitude relative to the solar system standard of CI chondrites. Detailed mass spectrometry of 12 of these "BeLaU"-type spherules, the population of which may constitute up to ~10% of our entire collected sample, suggests that they are derived from material formed by planetary igneous fractionation. Their chemical composition is unlike any known solar system material. 42. 'We Are the Future': Career Attitudes of MilleniGenZ College Students

Abstract

Millennials make up the largest segment of the workforce today and it is estimated that by 2025, 75% of the global workforce will comprise this emerging generation (Fry, 2018). In this current study, I examine the career attitudes of Latinx and Asian American Millennial and Gen Z college students to understand better how their unique college experiences- shaped by their familial, cultural, and personal backgrounds -- can inform how they imagine their post-college trajectory. Specifically, I explore to what extent these sociocultural influences impact MilleniGenZ's interest and attainment in leadership roles within their future careers. Two sets of surveys were administered. A 184-question survey was administered to college students in Southern California in 2017 (N=936), and in 2020, an updated 211-question survey was administered (N=742). The findings show the importance of providing better career resources (e.g., workshops, mentorship, networking opportunities) for MilleniGenZ during college, which will ease their transition into the workforce and potential leadership roles. The findings of the current study contribute to the existing literature by unpacking how complex sociocultural factors intersect to influence Latinx and Asian American college students' career attitudes. Based on our findings, institutions, and organizations should incorporate diversity and inclusion considerations into the career planning process to support individuals in overcoming systemic barriers.

43. Online Doctoral Students' Perception of Autonomy Support to Progress in Dissertation

Abstract

Following the worldwide shift, partially or fully, to virtual education during the COVID-19 pandemic, online education has received renewed attention. Bal et al. (2020) noted the issues faced by higher degree students during that period in which they struggled with time management, access to resources, and balancing work and personal life. Over 61% of doctoral students writing their dissertations reported increased hardship during the transition, but not necessarily due to online education (Donohue et al., 2021). The most prominent struggles involved data collection during times of lockdown (Donohue et al., 2021), but many students also struggled with a shift to online mentorship with their chairs and committee members (Niño & Martinez, 2022). Given the changes and struggles, Atkinson et al. (2022) pondered the professional and societal value of earning a PhD, arguably due to some concerns that the partially or fully online process of doctoral education could not support students' academic outcomes and success. Therefore, perhaps the forced shift to virtual education methods elucidated a need to better understand the online doctoral education process (Mullen, 2021). Given that several online higher educational institutions developed models for providing online doctoral education prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, they may present an opportunity to understand the long-term online doctoral education experience during times of greater normalcy. Exploring how online higher education institutions support students who are writing dissertations should provide insight into best practices of supporting online students during their dissertation processes.

44. Peer Experiences in the Preschool Classroom: Contribution to Children's Academic Development

Abstract

The present study examined the relations between two aspects of peer experiences in preschool classrooms and children's math and literacy development during kindergarten transition. Based on the theoretical framework of classroom ecology model, peer experiences were represented by classroom social network and teachers' grouping preferences. The outcomes included standardized math and literacy assessments collected from three time-points, fall of preschool, spring of preschool and fall of kindergarten. The analytical sample included 367 children recruited from 47 preschool classrooms located in two large school districts. Children completed peer-nomination tasks to characterize the classroom social network and teachers completed questionnaires to describe their grouping preferences. We conducted a multilevel longitudinal model to estimate the effects of classroom-level predictors on the trajectories of skill growth. We found that indices of classroom social network -- density and centralization -- were significantly associated with math and literacy development: more dense classrooms positively predicted math and literacy development whereas more centralized classrooms negatively predicted math and literacy development. Teachers' attention to children's skill levels in creating grouping structure was positively associated with math and literacy development. These findings indicate that young children's peer experiences are potentially important indicators of classroom quality, as they are associated with children's academic development over the course of preschool year into kindergarten transition.

45. Case Study Method to Increase Preservice Teachers' Experience with English Language Learners: Accommodations and Self-Efficacy

Abstract

The enrollment of English language learners (ELLs) in American public schools continues to increase each year. The substantial growth in this population of learners makes it imperative for future educators to understand how to effectively support ELLs' acquisition of academic content and English language proficiency. In past studies, preservice teachers have reported lower levels of self-efficacy when supporting these learners. This investigation examines how case study approaches can be utilized with preservice teachers to understand how they recommend strategies/accommodations for ELLs and their levels of self-efficacy in implementing these instructional approaches. Findings from this research suggest case studies are effective in increasing self-efficacy and knowledge, as preservice teachers were able to describe appropriate accommodations needed to support their future ELLs.

46. Different Approaches for Engaging Undergraduates in Research: Variable Impacts on Students' Self-Efficacy, Science Research Skills, and Future Goals

Abstract

Approaches toward engaging undergraduates in scientific research have included research experiences based in faculty laboratories (FLREs), course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs), and courses rooted in primary research literature that may be precursors to research experiences. We examined outcomes for undergraduate biology students enrolled in FLREs, CUREs, and a literature-based introduction to research seminar course. Students engaging with research that involved authentic, student-centered inquiry had significant increases in research skills, but little change in their self-efficacy. Students engaging with research in a more structured or guided experience did not exhibit the same gains in skills. Additionally, although they began with comparatively low self-efficacy scores, students enrolled in the seminar course increased in self-efficacy to levels equivalent to those of students engaging in FLREs. Across all types of engagement, students who reported a change in their future goals post-graduation tended to add pursuing a Ph.D. to their future plans - this was most evident in the seminar course. We therefore recommend an introduction to research seminar course for novice students toward building self-efficacy early in their careers as a way to prepare for - and potentially increase - engagement in CUREs and FLREs, and matching undergraduates with potential mentors for future research experiences.

Abstract

Maternal educational attainment (MEA) shapes offspring health through multiple potential pathways. Differential DNA methylation may provide a mechanistic understanding of these long-term associations. We aimed to quantify the associations of MEA with offspring DNA methylation levels at birth, in childhood and in adolescence. Using 37 studies from high-income countries, we performed meta-analysis of epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS) to quantify the associations of completed years of MEA at the time of pregnancy with offspring DNA methylation levels at birth (n = 9 881), in childhood (n = 2 017), and adolescence (n = 2 740), adjusting for relevant covariates. MEA was found to be associated with DNA methylation at 473 cytosine-phosphate-guanine sites at birth, one in childhood, and four in adolescence. We observed enrichment for findings from previous EWAS on maternal folate, vitamin-B12 concentrations, maternal smoking, and pre-pregnancy BMI. The associations were directionally consistent with MEA being inversely associated with behaviours including smoking and BMI. Our findings form a bridge between socio-economic factors and biology and highlight potential pathways underlying effects of maternal education. The results broaden our understanding of bio-social associations linked to differential DNA methylation in multiple early stages of life. The data generated also offers an important resource to help a more precise understanding of the social determinants of health.
