The transformation of 2 ¯ 01 β - Ga 2 O 3 to h- GaN under exposure to RF nitrogen plasma was monitored in situ by reflection high-energy electron diffraction. Analysis of the reaction kinetics reveals that the nitridation process is initiated by the formation of an oxynitride phase and proceeds via two-dimensional nucleation and growth of wurtzite GaN grains. X-ray photoelectron spectra suggest a Ga − (N x O 1 − x) type configuration dominates the surface early in the nitridation process. The surface restructuring is followed by a diffusion-fed phase transformation, which propagates the wurzite GaN structure into the substrate upon reaching 70 % nitrogen anion site occupation, corresponding to the oxygen solubility in h - GaN. A direct correlation is observed between the nitridated film morphology and the epitaxial film crystallinity, demonstrating control of the residual strain, lateral coherence, and mosaicity in subsequent GaN epitaxy by the nitridation conditions. This study provides mechanistic details of the nitridation reaction of 2 ¯ 01 β - Ga 2 O 3 facilitating the optimization of the nitridation process toward improving GaN - 2 ¯ 01 β - Ga 2 O 3 heterojunctions. The lack of suitable p-type dopant for β-Ga2O3 remains a hurdle for vertical power device applications. Epitaxy of GaN on Ga2O3 substrates was demonstrated as an alternative. (–201)-oriented β-Ga2O3 was converted into (0001)-oriented hexagonal GaN via nitrogen plasma in a plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy chamber, as verified by XRD and RHEED. The resulting nitridated GaN layers were characterized by TEM, x-ray reflectivity, and AFM to relate the nitridation conditions to crystallinity, layer thickness, and surface roughness. The crystallinity of subsequently grown epitaxial GaN films was quantified via XRD rocking curves and related to the nitridation layer properties across varying nitridation conditions. Implementation of regulatory standards has reduced exhaust emissions of particulate matter from road traffic substantially in the developed world. However, nonexhaust particle emissions arising from the wear of brakes, tires, and the road surface, together with the resuspension of road dust, are unregulated and exceed exhaust emissions in many jurisdictions. While knowledge of the sources of nonexhaust particles is fairly good, source-specific measurements of airborne concentrations are few, and studies of the toxicology and epidemiology do not give a clear picture of the health risk posed. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge, with a strong focus on health-related research, highlighting areas where further research is an essential prerequisite for developing focused policy responses to nonexhaust particles.

Abstract: Unlimited access to a motorway network can, in overloaded conditions, cause a loss of throughput. Ramp metering, by controlling access to the motorway at onramps, can help avoid this loss of throughput. The queues that form at onramps are dependent on the metering rates chosen at the onramps, and these choices affect how the capacities of different motorway sections are shared amongst competing flows. In this paper we perform an analytical study of a fluid, or differential equation, model of a linear network topology with onramp queues. The model allows for adaptive arrivals, in the sense that the rate at which external traffic enters the queue at an onramp can depend on the current perceived delay in that queue. The model also includes a ramp metering policy which uses global onramp queue length information to determine the rate at which traffic enters the motorway from each onramp. This ramp metering policy minimizes the maximum delay over all onramps and produces equal delay times over many onramps. The paper characterizes both the dynamics and the equilibrium behavior of the system under this policy. While we consider an idealized model that leaves out many practical details, an aim of the paper is to develop analytical methods that yield interesting qualitative insights and might be adapted to more general contexts. The paper can be considered as a step in developing an analytical approach towards studying more complex network topologies and incorporating other model features.

We present a global atlas of 4,728 metagenomic samples from mass-transit systems in 60 cities over 3 years, representing the first systematic, worldwide catalog of the urban microbial ecosystem. This atlas provides an annotated, geospatial profile of microbial strains, functional characteristics, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) markers, and genetic elements, including 10,928 viruses, 1,302 bacteria, 2 archaea, and 838,532 CRISPR arrays not found in reference databases. We identified 4,246 known species of urban microorganisms and a consistent set of 31 species found in 97% of samples that were distinct from human commensal organisms. Profiles of AMR genes varied widely in type and density across cities. Cities showed distinct microbial taxonomic signatures that were driven by climate and geographic differences. These results constitute a high-resolution global metagenomic atlas that enables discovery of organisms and genes, highlights potential public health and forensic applications, and provides a culture-independent view of AMR burden in cities.

Wildfire smoke contains many different types of air pollutants which are cause for concern. Studies on epidemiology have identified correlations between PM2.5 exposure to wildfire smoke and mortality, respiratory and cardiovascular morbidities, and may result in a reduction in birth weight. However, evidence from Indonesia is limited. For this study, a retrospective cohort epidemiological study was undertaken to quantify the Indonesian population’s exposure to wildfire-PM2.5. We present 9652 (88%) records of newborns to identify an association between fire-sourced PM2.5 and birth weight in Palangka Raya, Indonesia from 2015 to 2019. On an annual basis, geospatial, and season variations in wildfire-PM2.5 concentrations were observed using a satellite-based dataset from CAMS and used for gestational exposure to wildfire smoke. Applying a general linear model with birth weight (yi) as a continuous outcome, the relationship between PM2.5 exposure and low birth weight was examined. In addition, the binary outcome of low birth weight was analysed. A statistically significant difference in the birth weight reduction between infants delivered to mothers exposed to high levels of wildfire smoke and those exposed to low levels of wildfire smoke was observed over the entire time frame (2015-2019) (ρ-value < 0.001). In comparison to infants born to mothers exposed to lower concentrations, the birth weight of infants delivered to mothers exposed to high concentrations of PM2.5 in the third trimester decreased by 19.96%. A 1.9% reduction in birth weight could be caused by exposure during the fire-prevalent in the first trimester of pregnancy (ρ-value < 0.001). Since an estimation model predicted a 10 g/m3 increase in PM2.5 exposure between the first and last trimesters of pregnancy, variations in the second trimester did not significantly affect the association (ρ-value = 0.761). This emphasizes the significance of foetal development during these two trimesters. Exposure to pollution from wildfires contributes significantly to the global burden of newborns’ birth weight.

Air pollution is a worldwide environmental health issue. Increasingly, reports suggest that poor air quality may be associated with mental health problems, but these studies often use global measures and rarely focus on early development when psychopathology commonly emerges. To address this, we combined high-resolution air pollution exposure estimates and prospectively-collected phenotypic data to explore concurrent and longitudinal associations between air pollutants of major concern in urban areas and mental health problems in childhood and adolescence. Exploratory analyses were conducted on 284 London-based children from the Environmental Risk (E-Risk) Longitudinal Twin Study. Exposure to annualized PM2.5 and NO2 concentrations was estimated at address-level when children were aged 12. Symptoms of anxiety, depression, conduct disorder, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder were assessed at ages 12 and 18. Psychiatric diagnoses were ascertained from interviews with the participants at age 18. We found no associations between age-12 pollution exposure and concurrent mental health problems. However, age-12 pollution estimates were significantly associated with increased odds of major depressive disorder at age 18, even after controlling for common risk factors. This study demonstrates the potential utility of incorporating high-resolution pollution estimates into large epidemiological cohorts to robustly investigate associations between air pollution and youth mental health.

Ion bombardment during inductively coupled plasma reactive-ion etching and ion-implantation introduces irreparable crystalline damage to gallium nitride (GaN) power devices, leading to early breakdown and high leakage current. To circumvent this, a bi-layer selective area growth mask was engineered to grow up to 3.0 µm thick epitaxy of GaN using plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy as an ion-damage-free alternative to standard epitaxial processing routes. The masks and regrown architectures are characterized via SEM, conductive-atomic force microscopy (AFM), x-ray photo electron spectroscopy, Raman, and cathodoluminescence. Mask deposition conditions were varied to modulate and minimize the stress induced during thermal cycling. The resulting mesas exhibit low leakage, attributed to naturally terminated sidewalls as measured by an innovative perpendicular AFM measurement of the regrown sidewall. The regrown sidewall exhibited RMS (root mean square) roughness of 1.50 (±0.34) nm and defect density of 1.36 × 106 (±1.11 × 106) cm−2. This work provides a method to eliminate defect-inducing steps from GaN vertical epitaxial processing and stands to enhance GaN as a material platform for high-efficiency power devices. The American Thoracic Society has previously published statements on what constitutes an adverse effect on health of air pollution in 1985 and 2000. We set out to update and broaden these past statements that focused primarily on effects on the respiratory system. Since then, many studies have documented effects of air pollution on other organ systems, such as on the cardiovascular and central nervous systems. In addition, many new biomarkers of effects have been developed and applied in air pollution studies.This current report seeks to integrate the latest science into a general framework for interpreting the adversity of the human health effects of air pollution. Rather than trying to provide a catalogue of what is and what is not an adverse effect of air pollution, we propose a set of considerations that can be applied in forming judgments of the adversity of not only currently documented, but also emerging and future effects of air pollution on human health. These considerations are illustrated by the inclusion of examples for different types of health effects of air pollution.
