Abstract

International audience; Essential oils of aromatic plants have a high potential for the development of alternative insect pest management strategies. Especially for the control of stored product pests, alternative methods to replace synthetic insecticides are urgently needed. We evaluate the fumigant toxicity of Myrtus communis, Eucalyptus globulus, Syzygium aromaticum, Thymus saturejoides essential oils, and the main natural compound of two of them, eucalyptol, on different life stages of the confused flour beetle (Tribolium confusum) under laboratory conditions. Whereas eucalyptol and the essential oils of M. communis and E. globulus have rather strong toxic effects on all developmental stages, apart from the eggs of T. confusum, the essential oil of S. aromaticum caused the highest egg toxicity. Our results indicate that eucalyptol or essential oils containing large amounts of this compound might be efficient as potential alternative control agents for T. confusum, but tests under more natural conditions need to be performed.

Abstract

Essential oils of aromatic plants represent an alternative to classical pest control with synthetic chemicals. They are especially promising for the alternative control of stored product pest insects. Here, we tested behavioral and electrophysiological responses of the stored product pest Tribolium confusum, to the essential oil of a Brazilian indigenous plant, Varronia globosa, collected in the Caatinga ecosystem. We analyzed the essential oil by GC-MS, tested the effects of the entire oil and its major components on the behavior of individual beetles in a four-way olfactometer, and investigated responses to these stimuli in electroantennogram recordings (EAG). We could identify 25 constituents in the essential oil of V. globosa, with anethole, caryophyllene and spathulenole as main components. The oil and its main component anethole had repellent effects already at low doses, whereas caryophyllene had only a repellent effect at a high dose. In addition, the essential oil abolished the attractive effect of the T. confusum aggregation pheromone. EAG recordings revealed dose-dependent responses to the individual components and increasing responses to the blend and even more to the entire oil. Our study reveals the potential of anethole and the essential oil of V. globosa in the management of stored product pests.

6. Chemical Composition of Essential Oils from the Leaves of Schinus molleand Cupressus sempervirensand their Insecticidal Activity against Oryzaephilus surinamensis(Coleoptera: Silvanidae)

Abstract

AbstractEssential Oils (EOs) from aromatic plants were reported to have an insecticidal activity against several insects and could be an alternative to synthetic insecticides. The aim of this study is to determine the chemical composition of two plants (Schinus molleand Cupressus sempervirens)grown in Algeria and to investigate their insecticidal activity against the sawtoothed grain beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis, a secondary pest that may alter seriously the proprieties of some food products. EOs were extracted by hydrodistillation using Clevenger apparatus and analyzed by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). The analysis determined that the major components of S. molleEO are β-Eudesmol (15.19 %), Elemol (13.97 %), D-Limonene (9.89 %), Spathulenol (9.33 %) and β-Phellandrene (7.72 %) while those of C. sempervirensEO are Cedrol (44.81 %), α-Pinene (15.71 %) and neoiso-Dihydrocarveol acetate (9.7 %). The biological activity of EOs was evaluated by fumigation and repellency at different concentrations and exposure times. Fumigation toxicity bioassays showed maximum efficacy was reached at a concentration of 100 μL/L of air for the two kinds of EOs (90-100 %). Repellency tests revealed that S. molleEO was moderately repellent (55.62 %), while C. sempervirensEO was highly repellent (66.25 %). In fact, the EO of the experimental plants can be incorporated into insecticidal formulations and might be efficient as alternative to synthetic insecticides for O.surinamensiscontrol. However, other tests need to be performed on other life stages of the insect.

Abstract

The use of conventional insecticides is one of the most widely used methods of controlling pests of stored grains. But the presence of toxic residues in treated commodities and the emergence of insect resistant strains are becoming a growing concern. Olive oil is well known throughout the world for its benefits to human health, but little known for its biological activity against insect pests. The aim of this work is to study the fatty acid composition and the insecticidal activity of oils according to origin of plantation, against one of the main insect pests of stored grain Rhyzopertha dominica (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae). The olive oils were obtained using an oleodoser from olives of the 'Chemlal' variety harvested in 4 olive groves in Kabylia (Algeria) and the analysis of the fatty acid composition was carried out by gas chromatography. The main fatty acids found are oleic, palmitic and linoleic acids. Biological tests conducted under laboratory conditions, at a temperature of 30±1°C and a relative humidity of 70 ± 5 %, revealed that the 4 olive oils, applied on soft wheat grains, showed a contact toxicity against R. dominica. The toxicity of the oils varied as a function of the dose and the duration of treatments. After 24 h of exposure, all oils tested at the highest dose (0.4 mL/25 g) were found to be highly toxic to adults of R. dominica, with mortality rates ranging from 72.5 to 95 %. The toxicity of the 4 oils based on the LD50 (mL/25 g) values for 24 h mortality is established as follows: Maatkas (213), Bachloul (232), Tadmait (234) and M'Chedellah (263). The number of the F1 offspring decreases as the dose of oil is increased to reach zero with the highest dose, for all treatments. All oils tested completely preserve soft wheat seeds from R. dominica attacks using the same highest dose. On the other hand, results also revealed that treatments with olive oil do not affect the germination capacity of soft wheat seeds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

14. Evaluation of the bio-insecticidal effects of the main fatty acids of olive oil on Callosobruchus maculatusF. (Coleoptera-Bruchidae) in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata(L.))

Abstract

In this study the biological impact of olive oil on Callosobruchus maculatusF. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) and its development in stored grain was evaluated. The investigation was intended to validate the effectiveness of a traditional method of protecting vegetable crops as compared with the use of pesticides whose disadvantages are well known. Seed treatments were carried out by coating Vigna unguiculata(L.) with olive oil, and with each of the major fatty acids contained in olive oil (oleic, linoleic, stearic, and palmitic) and a mixture of these compounds. The biological parameters studied to evaluate the effects of these different treatments are longevity, fecundity, and amount of hatched eggs and emerged adults of the cowpea weevil. With the exception of the treatments with stearic acid and palmitic acid, the treatments revealed statistically significant insecticidal effects against the cowpea beetle. Moreover, it is shown that such insecticidal treatments do not negatively impact the germination ability of cowpea seeds.
