1. Tracking ablation and movement of icebergs with time-lapse photography at an alpine proglacial lake in Austria

Abstract: Little is known about the evolution and dynamics of icebergs in alpine lakes. We analyzed the movement and ablation patterns of icebergs at an ice-contact lake at Pasterze Glacier, Austria, using time-lapse images. Iceberg evolution was quantified for two timescales and related to meteorological as well as glacier ablation data from the adjacent glacier tongue. On a multiyear scale, ablation and movement of one iceberg (IB1) was monitored during a twenty-five-month period. On a single-day scale, the movement paths of eighty-four icebergs were tracked over 16 hours. Results for IB1 revealed an average iceberg ablation of 72 mm d−1 from June to September and no winter ablation. Iceberg ablation rates rose over time, explained by a rising surface area-to-volume ratio. Monitoring lake-wide iceberg movement for one day shows that a persistent katabatic glacier wind and a valley wind are the main influences on horizontal iceberg movement. Iceberg velocity is roughly 0.6 percent of the wind velocity. The existence of a wind-driven current on the lake surface is proposed. Sudden changes in movement rates, which are not explained by wind data, suggest that iceberg grounding is common. This study provides insight into iceberg melt rates in the absence of wave erosion.

Abstract: Cryospheric long-term timeseries get increasingly important. To document climate-related effects on long-term viscous creep of ice-rich mountain permafrost, we investigated timeseries (1995–2022) of geodetically-derived Rock Glacier Velocity (RGV), i.e. spatially averaged interannual velocity timeseries related to a rock glacier (RG) unit or part of it. We considered 50 RGV from 43 RGs spatially covering the entire European Alps. Eight of these RGs are destabilized. Results show that RGV are distinctly variable ranging from 0.04 to 6.23 m a ^−1 . Acceleration and deceleration at many RGs are highly correlated with similar behaviour over 2.5 decades for 15 timeseries. In addition to a general long-term, warming-induced trend of increasing velocities, three main phases of distinct acceleration (2000–2004, 2008–2015, 2018–2020), interrupted by deceleration or steady state conditions, were identified. The evolution is attributed to climate forcing and underlines the significance of RGV as a product of the Essential Climate Variable (ECV) permafrost. We show that RGV data are valuable as climate indicators, but such data should always be assessed critically considering changing local factors (geomorphic, thermal, hydrologic) and monitoring approaches. To extract a climate signal, larger RGV ensembles should be analysed. Criteria for selecting new RGV-sites are proposed.

10. Buoyant calving and ice-contact lake evolution at Pasterze Glacier (Austria) in the period 1998–2019

Abstract: Rapid growth of proglacial lakes in the current warming climate can pose significant outburst flood hazards, increase rates of ice mass loss, and alter the dynamic state of glaciers. We studied the nature and rate of proglacial lake evolution at Pasterze Glacier (Austria) in the period 1998–2019 using different remote-sensing (photogrammetry, laser scanning) and fieldwork-based (global navigation satellite system – GNSS, time-lapse photography, geoelectrical resistivity tomography – ERT, and bathymetry) data. Glacier thinning below the spillway level and glacier recession caused flooding of the glacier, initially forming a glacier-lateral to supraglacial lake with subaerial and subaquatic debris-covered dead-ice bodies. The observed lake size increase in 1998–2019 followed an exponential curve (1998 – 1900 m2, 2019 – 304 000 m2). ERT data from 2015 to 2019 revealed widespread existence of massive dead-ice bodies exceeding 25 m in thickness near the lake shore. Several large-scale and rapidly occurring buoyant calving events were detected in the 48 m deep basin by time-lapse photography, indicating that buoyant calving is a crucial process for the fast lake expansion. Estimations of the ice volume losses by buoyant calving and by subaerial ablation at a 0.35 km2 large lake-proximal section of the glacier reveal comparable values for both processes (ca. 1×106 m3) for the period August 2018 to August 2019. We identified a sequence of processes: glacier recession into a basin and glacier thinning below the spillway level; glacio-fluvial sedimentation in the glacial–proglacial transition zone covering dead ice; initial formation and accelerating enlargement of a glacier-lateral to supraglacial lake by ablation of glacier ice and debris-covered dead ice forming thermokarst features; increase in hydrostatic disequilibrium leading to destabilization of ice at the lake bottom or at the near-shore causing fracturing, tilting, disintegration, or emergence of new icebergs due to buoyant calving; and gradual melting of icebergs along with iceberg capsizing events. We conclude that buoyant calving, previously not reported from the European Alps, might play an important role at alpine glaciers in the future as many glaciers are expected to recede into valley or cirque overdeepenings.

13. Permafrost distribution and conditions at the headwalls of two receding glaciers (Schladming and Hallstatt glaciers) in the Dachstein Massif, Northern Calcareous Alps, Austria

Abstract: Permafrost distribution in rock walls surrounding receding glaciers is an important factor in rock stability and rock wall retreat. We investigated bedrock permafrost distribution in the Dachstein Massif, Austria, reaching up to 2995 m a.s.l. The occurrence, thickness and thermal regime of permafrost at this partly glaciated mountain massif are scarcely known. We applied a multi-method approach with continuous ground surface and near-surface temperature monitoring (GST), measurement of the bottom temperature of the winter snow cover (BTS), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), airborne photogrammetry, topographic maps, visual observations, and field mapping. Our research focused on several steep rock walls consisting of massive limestone above receding glaciers exposed to different slope aspects at elevations between ca. 2600 and 2700 m a.s.l. We aimed to quantify the distribution and conditions of bedrock permafrost particularly at the transition zone between the present glacier surface and the adjacent rock walls. According to our ground temperature data, permafrost is mainly found at north-facing rock walls. At south-east-facing rock walls, permafrost is probable only in very favourable cold conditions at radiation-sheltered higher elevations (>2700 m a.s.l.). ERT measurements reveal high resistivities (>30 000 Ω m) at ≥1.5 m depth at north-exposed slopes (highest values >100 kΩ m). Deducted from laboratory studies and additional small-scale ERT measurements, these values indicate permafrost existence. Permafrost bodies were found at several rock walls independent of investigated slope orientation; however, particularly large permafrost bodies were found at north-exposed sites. Furthermore, at vertical survey lines, a pronounced imprint of the former Little Ice Age (LIA) ice margin was detected. Resistivities above and below the LIA line are markedly different. At the LIA glacier surface, the highest resistivities and lowest active-layer thicknesses were observed. The active-layer thickness increases downslope from this zone. Permafrost below the LIA line could be due to permafrost aggradation or degradation; however, the spatial patterns of frozen rock point to permafrost aggradation following glacier surface lowering or retreat. This finding is significant for permafrost and cirque erosion studies in terms of frost-influence weathering in similar high-mountain settings.

14. Conventional and UAV-Based Aerial Surveys for Long-Term Monitoring (1954–2020) of a Highly Active Rock Glacier in Austria

Abstract: Rock glaciers are creep phenomena of mountain permafrost. Speed-up has been observed on several rock glaciers in recent years and attributed to climate change. Although rare, related long-term studies are nevertheless essential to bring a climate perspective to creep velocity changes. In the present study, we focused on changes both in the surface creep velocity and volume of the Leibnitzkopf rock glacier (Hohe Tauern Range, Austria) in the period 1954–2020. We applied 3D change detection using aerial images of both conventional (12 epochs between 1954 and 2018) and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based aerial surveys (2 epochs, 2019 and 2020), and combined this with ground and air temperature data. Photogrammetric processing (structure-from-motion, multi-view stereo) of the multi-temporal dataset resulted in high-resolution digital orthophotos/DOPs (5–50 cm spatial resolution) and digital elevation models/DEMs (10–50 cm grid spacing). Georeferencing was supported by five externally triangulated images from 2018, bi-temporal aerial triangulation of the image data relying on stable ground around the rock glacier, measured ground control points (2019 and 2020), and measured camera locations (PPK-GNSS) of the UAV flight in 2020. 2D displacement vectors based on the multi-temporal DOPs and/or DEMs were computed. Accuracy analyses were conducted based on geodetic measurements (2010–2020) and airborne laser scanning data (2009). Our analyses show high multi-annual and inter-annual creep velocity variabilities with maxima between 12 (1974–1981) and 576 cm/year (2019–2020), always detected in the same area of the rock glacier where surface disintegration was first observed in 2018. Our volume change analyses of the entire landform for the period 1954–2018 do not indicate any significant changes. This suggests little permafrost ice melt and/or general low ice content of the rock glacier. Analyses of the temperature data reveal a close relationship between higher temperatures and rock glacier acceleration despite the high probability of low ice content. This suggests that hydrogeological changes play an important role in the rock glacier system. The paper concludes with a summary of technical improvements and recommendations useful for rock glacier monitoring and a general view on the kinematic state of the Leibnitzkopf rock glacier.

Abstract: We used two historical maps that cover vast areas of central and eastern Europe at rather large scale dating to 1784 (First Military Survey of the Habsburg Empire; total extent 640,000 km²; scale 1: 28,800) and 1824 (cadastral land register of Francis I; 670,000 km²; 1: 2,880) to extracted individual buildings located at several alluvial fans in one valley in Austria (Admont Valley). Historic buildings were mapped and compared with present building (airborne–laserscanning based; 2008–2017), geomorphic (landform distribution), geomorphodynamic (documented damaging events at torrents), and spatial planning (hazard zonation maps) data. Results show that 69.2% of all present buildings are located at only 7% of the study area. Whereas the 1784–data are too inaccurate and unprecise for detailed spatial analyses, the 1824–data are very accurate and precise allowing spatial and socio–economic insight into the population and building evolution over a 190–year period. Results show for instance that despite a tremendous increase in buildings (911 in 1824; 3554 in 2008–2017), the proportion of buildings exposed to torrents–related natural hazards significantly decreased by 10.4% for yellow (moderate–risk) and by 13.7% for red (high–risk) zones. Similar historio–geomorphological studies as presented here might be accomplished in other countries in central and eastern Europe covered by the indicated historical map products.

Abstract: Abstract —J. BLUNDEN, T. BOYER, AND E. BARTOW-GILLIES Earth’s global climate system is vast, complex, and intricately interrelated. Many areas are influenced by global-scale phenomena, including the “triple dip” La Niña conditions that prevailed in the eastern Pacific Ocean nearly continuously from mid-2020 through all of 2022; by regional phenomena such as the positive winter and summer North Atlantic Oscillation that impacted weather in parts the Northern Hemisphere and the negative Indian Ocean dipole that impacted weather in parts of the Southern Hemisphere; and by more localized systems such as high-pressure heat domes that caused extreme heat in different areas of the world. Underlying all these natural short-term variabilities are long-term climate trends due to continuous increases since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the atmospheric concentrations of Earth’s major greenhouse gases. In 2022, the annual global average carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere rose to 417.1±0.1 ppm, which is 50% greater than the pre-industrial level. Global mean tropospheric methane abundance was 165% higher than its pre-industrial level, and nitrous oxide was 24% higher. All three gases set new record-high atmospheric concentration levels in 2022. Sea-surface temperature patterns in the tropical Pacific characteristic of La Niña and attendant atmospheric patterns tend to mitigate atmospheric heat gain at the global scale, but the annual global surface temperature across land and oceans was still among the six highest in records dating as far back as the mid-1800s. It was the warmest La Niña year on record. Many areas observed record or near-record heat. Europe as a whole observed its second-warmest year on record, with sixteen individual countries observing record warmth at the national scale. Abstract: The European Alps cover an area of 190,900 km2, are arcuated in the western part, extend over a length of 1200 km, are up to 280 km wide, and reach their highest elevation at Mont Blanc (4807.8 m a.s.l.). Some 19% of the area exceed 2000 m. Up to 52% consist of carbonate rocks at the surface, which is relevant for karstification processes. During the Last Glacial Maximum, 55% of the Alps were covered by glaciers whereas the remaining area was impacted by moderate to severe periglacial conditions causing the formation of remarkable periglacial landforms still visible today particularly at the Alpine margin. During the Late Glacial period, previously glaciated areas were reshaped by periglacial processes forming for instance rock glaciers and solifluction landforms characterising many high-elevated regions in the Alps at present. Nowadays, active periglacial processes are restricted to elevations above 2000 m, at the central Alps to above 2400 m. Around 11% of the Alps are in this active periglacial belt, constrained by the potential treeline as the lower limit and the currently glaciated areas (1% of the Alps) as the upper limit. The widespread existence of relict and active periglacial landforms in the Alps inspired research of many scholars and scientists since centuries. Even Leonardo da Vinci made some periglacial-related observations in the late fifteenth century. Despite long traditions and comprehensive experiences in periglacial landform research, future periglacial research is still needed and will help to better understand the impact of ongoing climate change on the periglacial reshaping of this remarkable mountain chain.

25. Immersive virtual reality gaming for geoeducation: proof-of-concept for the prehistoric Wildalpen Rock Avalanche, Austria

Abstract: Geoeducation involving people of all ages and societal groups represents an important foundation for building more sustainable societies, including a better awareness of hazardous processes such as landslides and related geomorphic phenomena. In the 21st Century, geoeducation stands in tough competition with a multitude of other pieces of information received by post-modern humans. To ensure that messages are appropriately received and remembered, geoeducational resources have to be funny and impressive. As immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences are supportive to this aim and are becoming more broadly affordable, we apply this technique and develop a set of landslide-related geo-gaming applications, which will be installed at the visitor centres of the three Austrian UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGps), and freely available to all those who have the necessary VR equipment.We present a first proof-of-concept study for the prehistoric Wildalpen Rock Avalanche, which occurred sometimes between 5900 to 5700 a BP during the autumn or winter period and displaced a rock mass of approx. 900 million m³. The area affected by the prehistoric rock avalanche is located in the Steirische Eisenwurzen UGGp in the province of Styria. Based on topographic reconstruction of the pre-event terrain and the release mass, we simulate the dynamics of the rock avalanche with the open-source mass flow simulation tool r.avaflow 3. This tool is equipped witha new, highly automatized, work flow for constructing VR-ready meshes in the open-source software Blender 3 and, on this basis, to generate videos that can be watched in VR with simple anaglyph or 3D glasses; and a script to generate animations (sequences) of landslide dynamics in the game development software Unreal Engine 5, based on the meshes produced in Blender 3. Such sequences can be integrated in immersive VR gaming applications of various levels of complexity. Players can trigger multiple landslides at different pre-defined locations and different times. In our proof-of-concept-study, we present a simple one-player game in which the Wildalpen Rock Avalanche can be triggered by grabbing a magic wand and touching with it the release area of the landslide. After the avalanche has come to rest, a piece of a fir (Abies alba), which was embedded in the rock avalanche sediments, appears at the surface of the deposit. Such tree logs have been used to date the event. The log can be grabbed by the player and, when touched with the magic wand, will tell how it has experienced the rock avalanche and the time after.Remaining technical challenges include possible effects of flow-type landslides on the players. Unreal Engine 5 is centred on interactions between discrete objects: whereas it would be straightforward to displace a player hit by a falling rock, dragging away a player by a continuously moving flow represented by a sequence of meshes is much more demanding from a game development perspective.Acknowledgement: This work is part of the project "Moving mountains - landslides as geosystem services in Austrian geoparks" (ESS22-24 - MOVEMONT) funded through the Earth System Sciences programme of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

26. Movement pattern analysis of the Dösen Rock Glacier (Hohe Tauern Range, Austria) using a multi-method approach

Abstract: Rock glaciers are known to show changing rheological behavior related to climate forcing, resulting in varying seasonal and interannual movement velocities. We studied the relationship between movement behavior and climate forcing at the Dösen Rock Glacier, Hohe Tauern Range, using a combination of velocity data, meteorological records, ground temperature records, and a numerical modeling approach. The Dösen Rock Glacier extends from 2340 to 2620 m asl, covers an area of 0.2 km2, is 950 m long and up to 300 m wide. Rather long series of annual to pluri-annual geodetic and photogrammetric movement pattern observations as well as air and ground temperature time series describing the thermal regime at the rock glacier site are available. Yet the monitoring data does not reflect movement rates on a sub-annual time scale. Hence the annual measurement campaigns performed on 17.08.2021 and 16./17.08.2022 were complemented by geodetic monitoring campaigns conducted on 06./07.07.2022 and 28.09.2022, to allow for a higher temporal resolution during summer and early fall of 2022. The observed annual movement rates between 2021 and 2022 ranged from 1.09 to 61.41 cm/a at the individual measurement points (n=34) with an overall annual mean of 33.79 cm. Analyses of the short-term monitoring indicate velocities in the range of 0.04 to 0.19 cm/d and a mean daily displacement of 0.11 cm (n=17) for the period between 06/07.07.2022 and 16/17.08.2022 whereas values ranged from 0.06 to 0.19 cm/d with a mean daily displacement of 0.14 cm (n=17) for the second period between 16/17.08.2022 and 28.09.2022. With three exceptions the horizontal movement rates at the 17 individual points, which could be measured and evaluated during both campaigns, were higher for the latter period. This reveals a general acceleration of the rock glacier during late-summer and early-autumn season.The sub-annual geodetic dataset from 2022 is used as a starting point for bridging time scales in the supplementation of long-term monitoring efforts with numerical modeling. We present a workflow which tries to introduce climate forcing on rock glacier kinematics to the numerical mass flow simulation framework r.avaflow. For this purpose, a temperature-viscosity relation will be established. This facilitates the implementation of viscosity, variable over time, as governing input parameter for the rock glacier flow behavior. In a first step the strategy will be applied for the period from 1954 to 2022, where geodetic and photogrammetric reference data as well as digital elevation models are available, allowing for the empirical evaluation of the simulation results.The described approach is designed to process rock glacier monitoring data (movement velocities and climate data) of different temporal resolution to be subsequently fed into an open-source modeling software with the aim to generate insights in sub-annual rock glacier movement patterns.Acknowledgement: This work was supported by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF P18304-N10), the European Regional Development Fund (18-1-3-I) and the Hohe Tauern National Park Carinthia.

27. Long-term ground temperature monitoring, repeated ERT measurements, and historical sources reveal increasing permafrost degradation at a high-mountain pass in Austria (Hochtor, Hohe Tauern Range)

Abstract: Average European air temperatures in the meteorological summer 2022 (June-August) were 1.3°C higher than normal impacting the cryosphere in the Alps. We studied the long-term warming effects at a high mountain pass landscape in central Austria named Hochtor (2576 m asl, 47.08°N, 12.84°E), Hohe Tauern Range. Archaeological finds along the former travel route over Hochtor suggest that this mountain crossing was already used in prehistoric times. Solifluction processes created the widespread existence of solifluction landforms at the pass and caused the displacement of archaeological finds from their original positions. This archaeological significance has also implications for present periglacial research. We worked on the research question how ongoing climate change caused modifications in the ground thermal regime and subsequently on permafrost and periglacial conditions at this site. The aims were: (1) to analyse ground temperature and permafrost conditions and trends, (2) to evaluate changes of potential frost-related weathering, and (3) to assess the impact of the recent atmospheric warming including the summer 2022 on the ground thermal conditions since the late 19th century at Hochtor. We used long-term ground temperature data (2010-2022) from three different depths (max. 60 cm), repeated electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) measurements from two years (2019, 2022), and auxiliary data dating back to 1887 (instrumental data) or Roman times (archaeological finds).Our results indicate that Hochtor changed during the period 2010-2022 from an active permafrost site to an inactive one with a supra-permafrost talik zone in between the seasonally thawing and freezing top layer and the permafrost. A general three-layer structure was quantified for the three 96m-long ERT profiles measured in 2019 at the mountain pass location. The central, 5 to 10 m thick stratum is a lens-like, ice-poor permafrost layer detected in 2019 and confirmed in its existence – although smaller in extent – in 2022. As revealed by time-lapse ERT analyses, a mean annual resistivity decreasing rate of 3.9 to 5.2% yr-1 indicates distinct and profile-wide permafrost degradation at the three profiles. The summers of 2003, 2015, 2019 and 2022 were the four warmest ones in the period 1887-2020. Therefore, resistivity changes between the exceptional warm summers 2019 and 2022 are not the single effect of the summer heatwave of 2022 but must be seen as a long-term signal of permafrost degradation which has increased significantly in the recent past.Reconstructed ground surface warming between the two normal periods 1891-1920 and 1991-2020 is for annual ground surface temperature 1.8°C and for summer ground surface temperature 2.5°C. Thus, summer warming surpasses annual warming which agrees with previous works and future scenarios. Frost-related weathering and periglacial processes decreased, although to an unknown extent. Abstract: Air temperatures in Europe in 2022 had been the highest on record for the meteorological summer season [June, July and August (JJA)], with +1.3°C above the 1991–2020 average. We studied the effects of recent warming on permafrost and periglacial conditions at a historical mountain pass in the Eastern Alps (Hochtor, 2,576 m asl, 47.08°N, 12.84°E). We used ground temperature data (2010–2022), repeated electrical resistivity tomography measurements (2019, 2022) and auxiliary data dating back to Roman times. We quantified permafrost conditions, evaluated frost‐related weathering and slope processes and assessed the impact of atmospheric warming on it. Results show that summer ground surface temperatures increased by 2.5°C between 1891–1920 and 1991–2020, whereas frost‐related weathering and periglacial processes decreased. The summers of 2003, 2015, 2019 and 2022 were the four warmest ones in 1887–2022. Hochtor changed in 2010–2022 from an active permafrost site to an inactive one with supra‐permafrost talik. A general three‐layer structure was quantified for all three ERT profiles measured. The middle, 5–10 m thick layer is ice‐poor permafrost detected in 2019, whose existence, although smaller, was confirmed in 2022. Resistivity decreased at the three profiles by 3.9% to 5.2% per year, suggesting permafrost degradation. We interpret the resistivity changes between the summers of 2019 and 2022 as a long‐term signal of permafrost degradation and not as the single effect of the summer heatwave in 2022. As our data show how rapidly permafrost degrades and as we face an even warmer climate for the remaining part of the 21st century, we expect that near‐surface permafrost at the Hochtor site will soon be history. Abstract: The alluvial channel of the Langgriesgraben (Austria) is a highly active geomorphic riverine subcatchment of the Johnsbach River with intermittent discharge and braided river structures. The high sediment yield entails both issues and opportunities. For decades, the riverbed was exploited as a gravel pit. Today, as part of the Gesäuse National Park and after renaturation, the sediment yield endangers a locally important bridge located at the outlet of the subcatchment. High-resolution geospatial investigations are vital for the quantification of sediment redistribution, which is relevant in terms of river management. Based on unmanned aerial system (UAS) surveys in 2015 (July, September, and October) and 2019 (August and October), high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) were generated, which enable us to quantify intra- and multiannual sediment changes. As surface runoff at the subcatchment occurs on only a few days per year with flash floods and debris flows that are not predictable and thus hardly observable, the subsurface water conditions were assessed based on electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) measurements, which were conducted in 2019 (November) and 2020 (May, June). Results of the UAS-based surveys showed that, considering the data quality, intra-annual sediment changes affected only small subareas, whereas multiannual changes occurred in the entire study area and amount to net sediment deposition of ≈0.3–0.4 m3m−2, depending on the channel section. In addition, the elevation differences for both intra-annual surveys revealed linear patterns that can be interpreted as braided river channels. As in both survey periods the same areas were affected by changes, it can be concluded that the channel mainly affected by reshaping persisted within the 4-year observation period. The subsurface investigations showed that although both near-surface and groundwater conditions changed, near-surface sediments are mostly dry with a thickness of several meters during the observations.

Abstract: Rapid growth of proglacial lakes in the current warming climate can pose significant 24 outburst flood hazards, increase rates of ice mass loss, and alter the dynamic state of glaciers. 25 We studied the nature and rate of proglacial lake evolution at Pasterze Glacier (Austria) in the 26 period 1998-2019 using different remote sensing (photogrammetry, laserscanning) and 27 fieldwork-based (GPS, time-lapse photography, geoelectrical resistivity tomography/ERT, and 28 bathymetry) data. Glacier thinning below the spillway level and glacier recession caused 29 flooding of the glacier, initially forming a glacier-lateral to supraglacial lake with subaerial and 30 subaquatic debris-covered dead-ice bodies. The observed lake size increase in 1998-2019 31 followed an exponential curve (1998: 1900 m²; 2019: 304,000 m²). ERT data from 2015 to 2019 32 revealed widespread existence of massive dead-ice bodies exceeding 25 m in thickness near the 33 lake shore. Several large-scale and rapidly occurring buoyant calving events were detected in 34 the 48 m deep basin by time-lapse photography, indicating that buoyant calving is a crucial 35 process for fast lake expansion. We identified a sequence of processes: glacier recession into a 36 basin and glacier thinning below spillway-level; glacio-fluvial sedimentation in the glacial 37 proglacial transition zone covering dead ice; initial formation and accelerating enlargement of a 38 glacier-lateral to supraglacial lake by ablation of glacier ice and debris-covered dead ice forming 39 thermokarst features; increase in hydrostatic disequilibrium leading to destabilization of ice at 40 the lake bottom or at the near-shore causing fracturing, tilting, disintegration or emergence of 41 new icebergs due to buoyant calving; and gradual melting of icebergs along with iceberg 42 capsizing events. 43. Simulation of slow geomorphic flows with r.avaflow

Abstract: GIS-based open-source simulation tools for extremely rapid mass flow processes such as snow avalanches, rock avalanches, or debris flows are readily available, covering a broad range of complexity levels – e.g., from single-phase to multi-phase. However, these tools are not suitable for slower types of mass flows characterized by high viscosities. The conventionally used momentum balance equations for rapid flows often appear numerically unstable for high viscosities, leading to the immediate reversion of flow direction or stopping, without appropriate numerical treatment. GIS-based simulation efforts of slow geomorphic flows are reported in the literature, and open source tools are available for specific phenomena such as glaciers, but no comprehensive and readily usable simulation tools have been proposed yet.We present a simple depth-averaged model implementation for the simulation of slow geomorphic flows, including glaciers, rock glaciers, highly viscous lava flows, and those flow-type landslides not classified as extremely or very rapid. Thereby, we use an equilibrium-of-motion concept. For each time step, flow momentum and velocity are computed as the equilibrium between accelerating gravitational forces and decelerating viscous forces, also including a simple law for basal sliding. Momentum balances are not carried over from one time step to the next, meaning that inertial forces, which are not important for slow-moving mass flows, are neglected. Whereas these basic principles are applied to all relevant processes, there is flexibility with regard to the details of model formulation and parameterization: e.g., the well-established shallow-ice approximation can be used to simulate glacier flow.The model is implemented with the GRASS GIS-based open-source mass flow simulation framework r.avaflow and demonstrated on four case studies: an earth flow, the growth of a lava dome, a rock glacier, and a glacier (considering accumulation and ablation). All four processes were reproduced in a plausible way. However, parameterization remains a challenge due to spatio-temporal changes and temperature dependency of viscosity and basal sliding. Our model and its implementation open up new possibilities for climate change impact studies, natural hazard analysis, and environmental education.

Abstract: In 2021, both social and economic activities began to return towards the levels preceding the COVID-19 pandemic for some parts of the globe, with others still experiencing restrictions. Meanwhile, the climate has continued to respond to the ongoing increase in greenhouse gases and resulting warming. La Niña, a phenomenon which tends to depress global temperatures while changing rainfall patterns in many regions, prevailed for all but two months of the year. Despite this, 2021 was one of the six-warmest years on record as measured by global mean surface temperature with an anomaly of between +0.21° and +0.28°C above the 1991–2020 climatology.

Abstract: In 2021, both social and economic activities began to return towards the levels preceding the COVID-19 pandemic for some parts of the globe, with others still experiencing restrictions. Meanwhile, the climate has continued to respond to the ongoing increase in greenhouse gases and resulting warming. La Niña, a phenomenon which tends to depress global temperatures while changing rainfall patterns in many regions, prevailed for all but two months of the year. Despite this, 2021 was one of the six-warmest years on record as measured by global mean surface temperature with an anomaly of between +0.21° and +0.28°C above the 1991–2020 climatology. Lake surface temperatures were their highest on record during 2021. The number of warm days over land also reached a new record high. Exceptional heat waves struck the Pacific Coast of North America, leading to a new Canadian maximum temperature of 49.6°C at Lytton, British Columbia, on 29 June, breaking the previous national record by over 4°C. In Death Valley, California, the peak temperature reached 54.4°C on 9 July, equaling the temperature measured in 2020, and the highest temperature recorded anywhere on the globe since at least the 1930s. Over the Mediterranean, a provisional new European record of 48.8°C was set in Sicily on 11 August. In the atmosphere, the annual mean tropospheric temperature was among the 10 highest on record, while the stratosphere continued to cool. While La Niña was present except for June and July, likely influencing Australia’s coolest year since 2012 and wettest since 2016, other modes of variability played important roles. A negative Indian Ocean dipole event became established during July, associated with a warmer east and cooler west Indian Ocean. Northern Hemisphere winters were affected by a negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation at both the beginning and end of 2021.
