Abstract

In savanna ecosystems, the seasonal effects of nitrogen forms and availability, as well as their utilization by plants, influence the abundance and distribution of herbaceous species in grassland communities. This study examines seasonal effects on nitrogen availability and utilization by native grass species in the Cerrado, a savanna ecosystem in Brazil. Ammonium and nitrate levels in soil, nitrate acquisition and transport, and Nitrate Reductase Activity (NRA) in different plant parts during dry and wet periods were assessed. Results indicated higher soil nitrate availability during the wet period, influenced by precipitation, with leaves showing a higher nitrate content compared to roots. There was seasonal modulation in nitrate reduction, with leaves being the primary site during the dry period and roots during the wet period. The studied grass species exhibited heterogeneous responses to seasonal nitrogen availability, potentially affecting community abundance patterns. Findings suggest that edaphoclimatic seasonality plays a crucial role in nitrogen distribution and utilization capacity by grass plants in the Cerrado, contributing to the understanding of these ecosystems' ecology. 10. How (and Whether) to Teach Undergraduates about the Replication Crisis in Psychological Science

Abstract

Over the past 10 years, crises surrounding replication, fraud, and best practices in research methods have dominated discussions in the field of psychology. However, no research exists examining how to communicate these issues to undergraduates and what effect this has on their attitudes toward the field. We developed and validated a 1-hr lecture communicating issues surrounding the replication crisis and current recommendations to increase reproducibility. Pre- and post-lecture surveys suggest that the lecture serves as an excellent pedagogical tool. Following the lecture, students trusted psychological studies slightly less but saw greater similarities between psychology and natural science fields. We discuss challenges for instructors taking the initiative to communicate these issues to undergraduates in an evenhanded way.

16. Strategic Key Success Factors for Divesting in the Nordics : A case study of divestitures advised by KPMG

Abstract

Over the past decades, the divestiture market has steadily been growing but there are signals that indicate that a large portion of these transactions can be seen as unsuccessful. To improve the number of successful divestitures, the purpose of the study is to identify key success factors that can help firms to succeed with their divestitures in the Nordic market. Since this topic is not as widely researched as closely related fields, such as Mergers and Acquisitions, and the research that has been conducted has focused on the U.S. market, without a strategic focus, the contributions of this study are academically relevant. This study is conducted in a qualitative and abductive manner with a focus on two theoretical frameworks, Resource-Based View and Business Model Innovation. These theoretical frameworks have been used to create an analytical model together with theory and previous studies of divestitures. The analytical model was then applied to analyze the empirical data which was collected by interviewing professionals within the deal advisory industry at KPMG. Finally, conclusions were drawn based on the analysis. The conclusions drawn in this study are that the most common reason to divest is to refocus on the firm's core business which is done by divesting business units that spread the firm too thin and that are seen as unprofitable. To define what a successful divestiture is, firms can use five different categories of measurements which are (i) the selling price \& share price, (ii) the transaction speed \& completion of the deal, (iii) the speed of negotiations \& following the plan, (iv) having comprehensive transitional service agreements \& relationships, and (v) retention rates. Abstract

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and Zearalenone (ZEN) are among the most common and important mycotoxin contaminants in agricultural products, with AFB1 comprising a liver carcinogen and ZEN responsible for reproductive dysfunctions. As mycotoxins are heat-stable, their removal is carried out mainly by anti-mycotoxin additives. This includes the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the in vitro detoxification of AFB1 and ZEN at pH 3 and 6 by three S. cerevisiae strains isolated from bovine forage, coded LL74, LL08, and LL83, determining the adsorption and biotransformation capacities of each strain. The yeast were freeze-dried and added, in triplicate, at 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mg mL−1 to a static gastrointestinal model. Final mycotoxin concentrations were determined by HPLC-FL. The evaluated strains exhibited high mycotoxin adsorption rates (20–55%), especially the LL08 strain, although low biotransformation, both equivalent to a commercial strain. The results indicate that pH does not interfere in AFB1 detoxification, while the use of 2.0 mg mL−1 of the LL83 S. cerevisiae strain led to higher ZEN adsorption at pH 3. The investigated strains indicate the possibility for use in in vivo conditions and high potential for commercial applications, with LL08 as the most promising strain.

Abstract

We conducted preregistered replications of 28 classic and contemporary published findings with protocols that were peer reviewed in advance to examine variation in effect magnitudes across sample and setting. Each protocol was administered to approximately half of 125 samples and 15,305 total participants from 36 countries and territories. Using conventional statistical significance (p < .05), fifteen (54%) of the replications provided evidence in the same direction and statistically significant as the original finding. With a strict significance criterion (p < .0001), fourteen (50%) provide such evidence reflecting the extremely high powered design. Seven (25%) of the replications had effect sizes larger than the original finding and 21 (75%) had effect sizes smaller than the original finding. The median comparable Cohen’s d effect sizes for original findings was 0.60 and for replications was 0.15. Sixteen replications (57%) had small effect sizes (< .20) and 9 (32%) were in the opposite direction from the original finding. Across settings, 11 (39%) showed significant heterogeneity using the Q statistic and most of those were among the findings eliciting the largest overall effect sizes; only one effect that was near zero in the aggregate showed significant heterogeneity. Only one effect showed a Tau > 0.20 indicating moderate heterogeneity. Nine others had a Tau near or slightly above 0.10 indicating slight heterogeneity. In moderation tests, very little heterogeneity was attributable to task order, administration in lab versus online, and exploratory WEIRD versus less WEIRD culture comparisons. Cumulatively, variability in observed effect sizes was more attributable to the effect being studied than the sample or setting in which it was studied.\ud \ud Data, materials and code available at: https://osf.io/8cd4r/
