22. Feeling–living–fighting the housing crisis: testimonio as methodology in geographic housing research.

Abstract

While advocates and urbanites regard the housing crisis as a major challenge, federal and city officials seldom act with the urgency demanded of them by their constituency, of which a growing number is either unhoused or housing insecure. The aim of this paper is to study this crisis from the perspective of those most affected and contribute to a debate mostly dominated by economic and policy-oriented approaches. My use of testimonios collected in Washington, DC, between 2019 and 2022 reworks how knowledge on the housing crisis is constituted and highlights both the relational and collective knowledge production by those most affected by changes in the real estate economy. The goal of this paper is to stress the political potential and agency of people who tell their stories as they fight to (re)claim lost and threatened places and battle to protect their homes and neighbourhoods. On a broader scope, this paper sees value in everyday experiential knowledge and questions whose narratives of place are valued, in an effort to bring forth a new methodology in geographic housing research. 26. The slow violence of waiting in the unmaking of public housing

Abstract

ABSTRACTWhile the unmaking of public housing in the US and the subsequent displacement of residents is a widely studied phenomenon, this intervention aims to bring awareness to an absence of waiting in our reading of urban displacement. The literature on waiting, coming mostly from forced migration and refugee studies, has so far not been applied to the case of persons displaced from their homes in US cities. This contribution critically reflects current debates on temporalities in urban redevelopment and aims to thoroughly engage with waiting as an integral part of displacement to flesh out the slow violence and power-geometries of home-unmaking. To illustrate the importance of waiting for urban geography, this intervention briefly discusses the redevelopment of a public housing project in Washington, DC. Five years after the demolition of the project, it is still a brownfield, with its residents scattered across the city, even though they were promised that they could return. The residents thus struggle to inhabit the liminal spaces they are in, while they battle the uncertainty and arbitrariness of waiting to return to their homes.

Abstract

While methodologies on fieldwork are widely discussed in geography, this paper illuminates the challenges of emotional labor that are associated with ethnographic fieldwork. For many geographers, fieldwork is an exciting and crucial part of their job, but for some, especially junior faculty and graduate students, there are many undiscussed and unanticipated difficulties associated with this work. We focus on three challenges that in particular require emotional labor: always being on alert, attachment to places, and the relationships to research participants. Building on personal stories from their research in US cities, both authors reveal the hardships and realities of ethnographic fieldwork. Yet, in order to open up more critical dialogue and honest conversations about the emotional toll of research, this paper demands an institutionalization of support services, particularly for Early Career Researchers (ECRs), so fieldwork can continue to be a crucial and rewarding part of our discipline. 33. Influence of female sex hormones on proactive behavioral and physiological immune parameters

Abstract

Hormonal fluctuations across the menstrual cycle can lead to changes in immune function. Women may be more susceptible to infections in the luteal phase, supposedly as a consequence of the hormone progesterone and its immunosuppressive action. While immunosuppression may be important for successful oocyte implantation and pregnancy, it makes women more vulnerable to pathogens. According to theory, to compensate for reduced immunocompetence, women in the luteal phase exhibit proactive behavioral responses, such as disgust and avoidance of disease-associated stimuli, to minimize contagion risk. However, previous studies yielded inconsistent results, and did not account for accompanying proactive immune responses, like the increase of secretory immunoglobin A (sIgA). Here, we assessed the proactive immune response and feelings of disgust associated with disease cues across the menstrual cycle, i.e., in 61 naturally cycling woman, and in 20 women taking hormonal contraception (HC). Women rated disease vulnerability and disgust before and after watching a video displaying people with respiratory symptoms and provided saliva samples for hormone and sIgA analysis. Women with HC reported a heightened vulnerability to disease compared to naturally cycling women, whereas both the feeling of disgust and the sIgA increase elicited by the disease video were similar across groups, regardless of progesterone. We only found a u-shaped relationship between progesterone and baseline sIgA content in naturally cycling women, with its nadir during ovulation. Overall, our data do not support a compensatory relationship between the proposed progesterone-induced immunosuppression and proactive responses such as heightened disgust or sIgA in response to disease cues.

Abstract

ABSTRACTTrust has become a popular term in current political and social debates, but it usually remains a vague concept. This paper aims to introduce trust as a sociospatial concept for the study of urban developments. More precisely, trust is used to analyze the housing markets of two U.S. cities, Washington, D.C. and New Orleans, both of which are shaped by the forces of a global real estate market, rendering housing unaffordable for many local residents. Trust serves as a lens through which we can examine the tensions in the housing market and the struggles of local residents. We argue that these tensions sever urban trust relations by undermining the home as an essential building block for trust. Securing access to adequatehousing is thus regarded as a first step toward building urban trust networks, enabling residents to partake in urban life and make use of their right to the city.

Abstract

Food by-products can be used as natural and sustainable food ingredients. However, a modification is needed to improve the technofunctional properties according to the specific needs of designated applications. A lab-scale twin-screw extruder was used to process enzymatically treated apple pomace from commercial fruit juice production. To vary the range of the thermomechanical treatment, various screw speeds (200, 600, 1000 min−1), and screw configurations were applied to the raw material. Detailed chemical and functional analyses were performed to develop a comprehensive understanding of the impact of the extrusion processing on apple pomace composition and technofunctional properties as well as structures of individual polymers. Extrusion at moderate thermomechanical conditions increased the water absorption, swelling, and viscosity of the material. An increase in thermomechanical stress resulted in a higher water solubility index, but negatively affected the water absorption index, viscosity, and swelling. Scanning electron microscopy showed an extrusion-processing-related disruption of the cell wall. Dietary fiber analysis revealed an increase of soluble dietary fiber from 12.6 to 17.2 g/100 g dry matter at maximum thermo-mechanical treatment. Dietary fiber polysaccharide analysis demonstrated compositional changes, mainly in the insoluble dietary fiber fraction. In short, pectin polysaccharides seem to be susceptible to thermo-mechanical stress, especially arabinans as neutral side chains of rhamnogalacturonan I.
