Introduction: The agricultural sector has a major role in providing the supply of necessary food for society. It helps to reduce unemployment rate and poverty. The business in this sector increases the choice of production of different goods, decreases innovation costs, and provides more new goods through importing required inputs and new technologies. So the trade openness in agricultural sector has led to the development and expansion of this sector. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the effect of trade openness on the import of some agricultural inputs in Iran. Materials and Methods: The long-run and short-run impact of trade openness on the import of some inputs in the Iranian agricultural sector was investigated from 2009-2018 using panel data analysis. To estimate the relationships of the studied variables, the panel mean group model with auto regressive distributed lags (PMG-ARDL) and mean group (MG) was used. Findings: The results of PMG-ARDL model showed that the trade openness index has increased the import of agricultural inputs by 0.32% in the long run. Also, the values of this index for fertilizer, chemical pesticides and agricultural seeds were calculated as -0.578, 0.17 and 0.043, respectively, which indicated that Iran is highly dependent on imports to provide agricultural inputs. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that in the long run, the trade openness index has a positive impact on the import of inputs in the agricultural sector, which has negative consequences for the agricultural sector and for farmers. In this regard, the government's support policies should be used more in order to increase domestic production and support producers against foreign competitors, and create appropriate infrastructures for the introduction of new and advanced technologies.
