Abstract Background Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in children, but rare in adults. Para-meningeal rhabdomyosarcoma in head and neck (PM-HNRMS) is less applicable for surgery due to the anatomic reason. PM-HNRMS has a poor prognosis in children. However, its clinical outcomes remain unclear in adults due to the rarity. Further, there is almost no detailed data about salvage therapy. Methods We retrospectively examined the adult patients with PM-HNRMS treated at institutions belonging to the Kyushu Medical Oncology Group from 2009 to 2022. We evaluated the overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) of the patients who received a first-line therapy. We also reviewed the clinical outcomes of patients who progressed against a first-line therapy and received salvage therapy. Results Total 11 patients of PM-HNRMS received a first-line therapy. The characteristics were as follows: median age: 38 years (range 25 – 63 years), histology (alveolar/spindle): 10/1, and risk group (intermediate/high): 7/4. As a first-line therapy, VAC and ARST0431-based regimen was performed in 10 and 1 patients, respectively. During a first-line therapy, definitive radiation for all lesions were performed in seven patients. The median PFS was 14.2 months (95%CI: 6.0 – 25.8 months): 17.1 months (95%CI: 6.0 – not reached (NR)) for patients with stage I-III and 8.5 months (95%CI: 5.2 – 25.8 months) for patients with stage IV. The 1-year and 3-year PFS rates were 54.5% and 11.3% for all patients. Median OS in all patients was 40.8 months (95%CI: 12.1 months–NR): 40.8 months (95%CI: 12.1 – NR) for patients with stage I-III and NR for patients with stage IV. The 5-year OS rate was 48.5% for all patients. Among seven patients who received salvage therapy, three are still alive, two of whom remain disease-free for over 4 years after completion of the last therapy. Those two patients received multi-modal therapy including local therapy for all detected lesions. Conclusion The cure rate of adult PM-HNRMS is low in spite of a first-line therapy in this study. Salvage therapy might prolong the survival in patients who received the multi-modal therapy including local therapy for all detected lesions.

Microreactor technologies have emerged as versatile platforms with the potential to revolutionize chemistry and materials research, offering sustainable solutions to global challenges in environmental and health domains. This survey paper provides an in-depth review of recent advancements in microreactor technologies, focusing on their role in facilitating accelerated discoveries in chemistry and materials. Specifically, we examine the convergence of microfluidics with machine intelligence and automation, enabling the exploitation of the cyber-physical environment as a highly integrated experimentation platform for rapid scientific discovery and process development. We investigate the applicability and limitations of microreactor-enabled discovery accelerators in various chemistry and materials contexts. Despite their tremendous potential, the integration of machine intelligence and automation into microreactor-based experiments presents challenges in establishing fully integrated, automated, and intelligent systems. These challenges can hinder the broader adoption of microreactor technologies within the research community. To address this, we review emerging technologies that can help lower barriers and facilitate the implementation of microreactor-enabled discovery accelerators. Lastly, we provide our perspective on future research directions for democratizing microreactor technologies, with the aim of accelerating scientific discoveries and promoting widespread adoption of these transformative platforms.

The question whether a given isolated quantum many-body system would thermalize has currently no general answer. Here, Shiraishi and Matsumoto demonstrate the computational universality of thermalization phenomena already for simplified 1D systems, thus proving that the thermalization problem is undecidable.

Juvenile hormone (JH) plays important roles in almost every aspect of insect development and reproduction. JHs are a group of acyclic sesquiterpenoids, and their farnesol backbone has been chemically modified to generate a homologous series of hormones in some insect lineages. JH III (methyl farnesoate, 10,11-epoxide) is the most common JH in insects, but Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) and ‘higher’ Diptera (suborder: Brachycera; flies) have developed their own unique JHs. Although JH was first proposed in the hemipteran suborder Heteroptera (true bugs), the chemical identity of the heteropteran JH was only recently determined. Furthermore, recent studies revealed the presence of a novel JH, JH III skipped bisepoxide (JHSB3), in some heteropterans, but its taxonomic distribution remains largely unknown. In the present study, we investigated JHSB3 production in 31 heteropteran species, covering almost all heteropteran lineages, through ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. We found that all of the focal species produced JHSB3, indicating that JHSB3 is widespread in heteropteran bugs and the evolutionary occurrence of JHSB3 ascends to the common ancestor of Heteroptera.

Multiparameter quantum estimation is made difficult by the following three obstacles. First, incompatibility among different physical quantities poses a limit on the attainable precision. Second, the ultimate precision is not saturated until you discover the optimal measurement. Third, the optimal measurement may generally depend on the target values of parameters, and thus may be impossible to perform for unknown target states. We present a method to circumvent these three obstacles. A class of quantum statistical models, which utilizes antiunitary symmetries or, equivalently, real density matrices, offers compatible multiparameter estimations. The symmetries accompany the target-independent optimal measurements for pure-state models. Based on this finding, we propose methods to implement antiunitary symmetries for quantum metrology schemes. We further introduce a function which measures antiunitary asymmetry of quantum statistical models as a potential tool to characterize quantumness of phase transitions.

In this study, we report a novel method based on the Mizoroki-Heck reaction followed by an iodine test for the screening of itaconic acid-producing fungi from soils. This method is simple, rapid, and requires 10 μL of culture; results are obtained within 1.5 h. The detection limit of itaconic acid in the cultures was 0.13 mM. This is the first report on the direct screening of itaconic acid-producing fungi using a coupling reaction.

Recently, we developed a unique microbial screening method based on the Mizoroki–Heck reaction for itaconic acid (IA)-producing fungi. This method revealed that 37 out of 240 fungal strains isolated from soils produce vinyl compounds, including IA. In this study, we further characterized these compounds in order to verify that the screening method permits the isolation of fungi that produce other vinyl compounds, excluding IA. HPLC analysis showed that 11 out of 37 isolated strains produced IA, similar to Aspergillus terreus S12-1. Surprisingly, the other 8 isolated strains produced two vinyl compounds with HPLC retention times different from that of IA. From these strains, the vinyl compounds of Aspergillus niger S17-5 were characterized. Mass spectrometric and NMR analyses showed that they were identical to 8-hydroxyhexylitaconic acid (8-HHIA) and 9-HHIA. This finding showed that 8-HHIA- and 9-HHIA-producing fungi, as well as IA-producing fungi, are ubiquitously found in soils. Neither 8-HHIA nor 9-HHIA showed antibacterial or anti-inflammatory activities. Interestingly, 8-HHIA and 9-HHIA showed cytotoxicity against the human cervical cancer cell line (HeLa) and human diploid cell line (MRC-5), and MRC-5 only, respectively, compared to IA at the same concentration. This study indicates that the screening method could easily discover fungi producing 8-HHIA and 9-HHIA in soils.

The stability of a flexible cantilevered plate subjected to a parallel flow is investigated. As the flexible flat plates, the papers in a high speed printing machine, the thin plastic and metal films, the fluttering flag and the oscillating doom roof are enumerated. The fluid is assumed to be treated as an ideal fluid in a subsonic domain, and the fluid pressure is calculated using the velocity potential theory. The coupled equation of motion of a flexible cantilevered plate is derived into consideration with the added mass, added damping and added stiffness respectively. The complex eigenvalue analysis is performed for the stability analysis. In order to consider the accuracy of dynamic stability analysis, three stability analysis method are proposed. Firstly, the analysis method based on boundary conditions in the half space surrounded by leading edge and trailing edge is performed. Hereafter, let's call it the coupled solution. Secondly, the analysis method based on the non-circulatory aerodynamic theory is performed. Let's call it the non-circulatory solution.Thirdly, the analysis method which fulfills Kutta condition is performed. Let's call it the circulatory solution.The following is made to be clear through three solutions. When the mass ratio of a fluid system for a structure system is small, the flutter of the lower mode such as a second mode become predominant. And, when the mass ratio is large, the higher mode flutter appears. Although the critical velocities of the coupled solution and the non-circulatory solution are higher than that of the circulatory solution in the second mode flutter with lower mass ratio, the critical velocities of the circulatory solution becomes higher than those of the coupled solution and the non-circulatory solution when the mass ratio increases.

The anti-influenza virus activity of green tea catechins has been demonstrated in experimental studies, but clinical evidence has been inconclusive. School-aged children play an important role in the infection and spread of influenza in the form of school-based outbreaks. Preventing influenza infection among students is essential for reducing the frequency of epidemics and pandemics. As a non-pharmaceutical intervention against infection, gargling is also commonly performed in Asian countries but has not yet been extensively studied.A randomized, open label, 2-group parallel study of 757 high school students (15 to 17 years of age) was conducted for 90 days during the influenza epidemic season from December 1st, 2011 to February 28th, 2012, in 6 high schools in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The green tea gargling group gargled 3 times a day with bottled green tea, and the water gargling group did the same with tap water. The water group was restricted from gargling with green tea. The primary outcome measure was the incidence of laboratory-confirmed influenza using immunochromatographic assay for antigen detection. 757 participants were enrolled and 747 participants completed the study (384 in the green tea group and 363 in the water group). Multivariate logistic regression indicated no significant difference in the incidence of laboratory-confirmed influenza between the green tea group (19 participants; 4.9%) and the water group (25 participants; 6.9%) (adjusted OR, 0.69; 95%CI, 0.37 to 1.28; P = 0.24). The main limitation of the study is the adherence rate among high school students was lower than expected.Among high school students, gargling with green tea three times a day was not significantly more efficacious than gargling with water for the prevention of influenza infection. In order to adequately assess the effectiveness of such gargling, additional large-scale randomized studies are needed.ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01225770.
